NÅLBINDING
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Got a minor surge of energy yesterday, carved a needle out of a bamboo skewer and learned some nålbinding from a youtube video XD
It's fussy to start, but once you get a feel for it you just kind of take off. This is meant to be the base of a long fingerless glove, tho it may end up being something else before i'm done. I've decided i do not like using single ply wool for this, props to crafters that do, but it's just too fluffy and felty for me. Hashtag #2ply4lyfe 🤘
A big tip: the first band of stitches will be looser before it's joined and more rows are added, this tightens and strengthens the whole thing. I measured it for above my elbow, but at this stage it now snugly fits the widest part of my forearm.
Also if you make a mistake it's a bitch and a half to undo all the knots to fix it. No frogging here lolol. But the fabric it makes is so thick and sturdy, it's very forgiving of the occasional mistake.
This was made using the Mammen stitch, with this video for instruction:

Sorry for the terrible pic quality and low light but after 16 months (including twelve during which I didn't touch it), my first embroidery project is finally finished!

Sewed a circle skirt for the first time! (first picture also shows a purse I crocheted.) I've made a few quilts, but no garment making! I used quilting cotton because I read it was appropriate for a circle skirt, and I used an elastic waist band because it seemed more forgiving while measuring out the pattern. Overall went well, but I definitely discovered a few aspects I should improve upon for next time! Maybe next time I'll even experiment with pockets! Either way, this will definitely be a repeat craft!

This is the longest shot I'll ever take, but does anybody happen to have a picture of the cross-stitch pattern that was used here? I'll have to do some restoration work soon, and I'm missing a lot of details.
I know the pattern was sold at Michael's in 1997, and it depicts a plush white bunny and plush pink bear in a hot air balloon over a field of toys and flowers, surrounded by a border of hearts.
Most of the stitches in mine have been lost to time, to the point where I can't tell what the bunny's face or most of the balloon once looked like, but I'm hoping I'll be able to get a better reference from a picture of the original pattern.
Any help is appreciated!

New piece! Am calling her “Skör” (fragile in Swedish).
Assembled from strips of lace, a doily, and some fiddly needle lace and crochet for the teeth. Starched with diluted wood glue.
Perfect in time for Halloween!

every time someone says ‘oh, you knit? do you like it?’ i have the marrow-deep urge to tenderly take their face in my hands and press my lips to their eyelids and telepathically transmit the full overwhelming awareness that i carry just beneath my skin every moment of every day of how important fiber crafts and textiles are and historically have been to humanity. every stitch i work is a thousand billion stitches that have already been worked and will be worked in the future, from the farthest reaches of prehistory until time immemorial. every spindle i spin is spun with the same flick of uncountable fingers from ages past, all united across history in the deceptively simple movement that has shaped history, and art, is the context within which every single person on earth has ever lived their life and lives their lives still. everything from our phones to our homes is given shape and form by the overlooked but utterly important textile arts.
‘of fucking course i like knitting, you jackass,’ i say gently. ‘i wouldn’t do it otherwise.’
