So you watched #PaulTyson, saw Amanda Serrano vs Katie Taylor, and now you want to watch more women's boxing? Here's a quick guide!
I have been beating the drum of women's boxing for over a decade at this point, so I feel uniquely qualified to help people who might want to get deeper into their women's boxing bag. So here are a handful of fights to help you jump into the sport!
(I've kept it to recent examples because these fighters are still active)
Katie Taylor vs Amanda Serrano 1 - April 30, 2022
youtube
I'm sure most people who saw Taylor-Serrano 2 on the undercard of the Mike Tyson-Jake Paul card did not get to see the first fight. And they should. The 2nd fight picked up right where the first one left off, with these two getting in the phonebooth and getting to work at a torrent pace. Absolutely fantastic fight. Worthy of the Fight of the Year honors it got from Sports Illustrated. Was lucky enough to be there in person and it is one of my favorite memories as a combat sports fan.
2. Claressa Shields vs Savannah Marshall - October 15, 2022
youtube
If there is any woman who has claim to the title of best ever outside of Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano, it is the 'GWOAT' Claressa Shields. She is a 5 division champion who was also the undisputed champion at 154lbs. She's a two time Olympic gold medalist, winning her first one at the age of 16 year old. And through her pro and amateur career, only one woman had ever beat her (on the amateur circuit) - knockout artist Savannah Marshall. Marshall has a claim to being the biggest puncher women's boxing has ever seen and has a style unlike any ever seen in women's pro boxing. So a professional meeting between the two was always going to make for a fun clash.
3. Alycia Baumgardner vs Mikaela Mayer - October 15, 2022
youtube
Of the fights on the list, this is probably the least exciting but it carried significant weight and I still found it incredibly entertaining. Mayer is a former Olympian who was on her way to unifying all the belts at 130lbs to become undisputed champion. She had marched her way through the pros, earning a 17-0 record at the time and taking out former champions like Maïva Hamadouche, Erica Farias, and Jennifer Han. Alycia Baumgardner was not that. She was a pro boxer who was in the wilds, trying to cut her teeth at a time when no American promoter was investing in women's boxing. It wasn't until Matchroom (UK promotion) gave her a shot against a different super featherweight champion Terri Harper did Baumgardner finally breakthrough, knocking the champ out in an upset victory. That set these two on a collision course for unification
4. Gabriela Fundora vs Celeste Alaniz - November 2, 2024
youtube
This one is a little different. It was less a great, competitive fight than the ascension of the next great women's boxer. Gabriela Fundora comes from a boxing family. Her brother Sebastian is a world champion up at 154lbs. So her winning a world title at only 22 years old isn't too crazy. But fighting for the undisputed (all four belts) kind of is. Celeste Alaniz is a fellow young up and coming boxer who had just knocked off former two division champion and Olympic bronze medalist Marlen Esparza. The fight between these two was fun, while it lasted. Keep an eye out on the winner here. They're going places. Like the top of the P4P list.
5. Yesica Nery Plata vs Kim Clavel - January 13, 2023
youtube
Felt wrong not putting any Mexican boxers on this one so I'm going with the light flyweight champion, Yesica Nery Plata. At 30-2, Plata has built up an impressive run as a pro. She is the WBA and WBC light flyweight champion. Sadly, the fight I most want to see from her is a rematch with Kenia Enriquez and with Enriquez up a weight class, that ship has sailed. That said, would love to see her in there with a Yokasta Valle.

Archie Sonic Comics (1992)
Publisher: Archie Comics / Sega of AmericaScheduleMonthly Genre: Action-adventure / Comedy-drama / Romance / Science fantasy / Superhero Date: November 22, 1992 Number of issues: 290 Author: Ian Flynn / Ken Penders / Michael Gallagher / Karl Bollers / Scott Fulop Artist: Tracy Yardley / Matt Herms / Adam Bryce Thomas / Steven Butler / Jamal Peppers / Ben Bates / Manny Galan / Evan Stanley / Jennifer Hernandez / Patrick "Spaz" Spaziante / Dawn Best / Tyson Hesse / Art Mawhinney / Jim Amash / Terry Austin Type: Appropriation
Summary:
The comics follow the adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog and his friends, called the Freedom Fighters, who battle against the evil Doctor Robotnik. Initially based on the plot of the 1993 animated series, the comic later incorporated elements from the games and other media. When Ken Penders, former head writer of the comic got sued by Archie Comics because he allegedly breached his contract with them, the comic lead to a continuity reboot with all established characters created by Penders and other writers being removed, save those of current writer Ian Flynn, who penned the new continuity, and those created for assorted animated series, to which Sega retains the rights. The new continuity is a world much closer to the world depicted in Sega's games.

Royal Rumble Marathon: 1998
The Rumble has entered 1998.
Warning, spoilers for past Rumbles.
We are now officially in the Attitude Era so expect shenanigans. I haven’t watched the Attitude Era in over a decade but I’m expecting to feel a lot of retrospective cringe.
The undercard:
We see a recap of the previous two months of Goldust’s activities. This is the era where Goldust dumped Marlena and is now accompanied by Luna Vachon. Dustin has ditched his traditional gold attire and now wears a variety of outfits. Tonight’s special is a lime green/purple-striped singlet tights, purple gloves, green and purple-striped face paint with blue hair. Dustin is also wearing a leopard-print thong over his tights. Luna’s attire is a black/red bikini combo with a clear plastic skirt/tutu. She’s also wearing flesh-colored tights. Luna has half her face covered with the traditional Goldust colors. The other half of Luna’s face has her tattoos.
Goldust (with Luna) vs Vader. Match was fine. The ending comes when Vader (with Luna on his back) delivers a top-rope Vader bomb to Goldust. Dustin is always fun and Luna continues to be a badass. This era of Dustin was crazy but fun. You never knew what Goldust was going to wear.
Steve Austin arrives, threatens to whoop Michael Coles’ ass. The Godwinns are in search of Austin.
We have a six-man lucha libre match: Battalion, Tarantula, El Torito vs Max Mini, Mosaic, and Nova. Sunny is the special guest referee. Fun match.
Soon after this, Sunny’s life begins to spiral, leading to her dismissal from the WWF and a lifetime of self-destruction. It’s a shame as Sunny was a talented performer. Of course, the true tragedy is the man she killed due to her drunk driving.
The Nation of Domination is now in search of Steve Austin. Farooq tells Mark Henry that he has to “prove himself”.
Mike Tyson hangs out with Shane and Vince. I don’t care about Mike Tyson. I don’t care about boxing. Tyson’s rape conviction, and his abusive tendencies, do not make me excited to see him on my wrestling programs. Of course, sitting next to Vince makes Tyson look like an altar boy by comparison.
Recap of the Ken Shamrock-Nation of Domination feud. The Rock is still with the Nation at this point, Mark Henry has newly joined.
Rock promo where he advises Bill Clinton to “not lay down with dogs” (referencing Paula Jones, and yes, the Rock names her specifically) and to “cover his willy”. Remember those cringe moments I said we’d encounter in the Attitude Era. Calling the woman suing a man for sexual harassment, even a President, a “dog” is one.
Ken Shamrock vs the Rock for the Intercontinental Championship. The Rock wins via DQ. Shamrock attacks referee Mike Chioda in the aftermath. Fine match.
The Boricuas are now searching for Steve Austin but find the D.O.A. instead. This is the era of multiple factions – mostly centering on race – were running wild in the WWE. Los Boricuas, the Nation of Domination, The Truth Commission, and D.O.A. (Disciples of Apocalypse) were the main factions.
The New Age Outlaws vs the Legion of Doom for the Tag Team titles. The Legion wins via DQ. Back-to-back DQ victories is a questionable call on a pay per view.
The Rumble entrants, in order of appearance:
Cactus Jack
Chainsaw Charlie (Terry Funk)
Tom Brandi
The Rock
Mosh of the Headbangers
Phineas Godwinn
8-Ball (Don Harris)
Blackjack Bradshaw (JBL)
Owen Hart (Jeff Jarrett and Jim Cornette ambush Owen on his way to the ring)
Steve Blackman
D’Lo Brown
Kurrgan
Marc Mero (accompanied by Sable)
Ken Shamrock
Thrasher of the Headbangers
Mankind
Goldust (in silver singlet tights with red knee-high fishnets and a black bikini on the outside of the tights, Luna has also changed her outfit to a silver one)
Jeff Jarrett (accompanied by Jim Cornette)
Honky Tonk Man (Hunter and Chyna stroll out to ringside during his entrance and cause Owen to be eliminated)
Ahmed Johnson
Mark Henry
Skull
Kama Mustafa
Steve Austin
Henry Godwinn
Savio Vega (accompanied by the Boricuas)
Farooq
Dude Love
Chainz (Brian Lee)
Vader
Steve Austin wins again, making him the 3rd multiple time winner – Hulk Hogan and Shawn Michaels are the others.
Rumble Highlights: Cactus-Charlie brawl (minus the unprotected chairshots), Rock-Austin outside the ring brawl and in-ring finale
Rumble Feuds: Cactus vs Charlie, Rock vs Shamrock, Owen vs Jarrett, Owen vs Hunter
More cringe moments: the unprotected, non-gimmicked chairshots Funk and Cactus gave each other. Please, no! Did the Harris brothers have their Nazi tattoos yet? (I can’t see clearly but if so, that is worse than cringe).
First-time Rumblers: Tom Brandi, Mosh, Steve Blackman, Kurrgan, Ken Shamrock, Thrasher, Mark Henry, Chainz
Surprise Entrants: Honky Tonk Man, 3 Faces of Foley
Quickest Elimination: Tom Brandi
Most Eliminations: Steve Austin
Unite to Eliminate the Big Man spot: Kurrgan
The final match of the ppv isn’t the Rumble (which I dislike). The final match is Shawn Michaels vs the Undertaker for the World championship in a casket match.
Shawn and Taker’s previous match was the first Hell In A Cell match. A casket match seems to be a step down in intensity.
Shawn is accompanied by Hunter and Chyna. The New Age Outlaws and the Boricuas attack the Undertaker but are run off by Kane. Kane then attacks the Undertaker and throws him into the casket. Kane and Paul Bearer lock the casket and set it on fire.
Shawn wins but severely injures his back when he bumps on the casket during the match. This would lead to Shawn’s post-Wrestlemania match.
Rating: 6 out of 10. Solid undercard, fun Rumble, good main event
Wrestlers and others who have passed on: Howard Finkel, Vader, Luna Vachon, Tarantula (Espectrito II), Torito (Espectrito), the Legion of Doom, Terry Funk, Chyna, Paul Bearer
Total number of deceased individuals: 11 (down 3 from the previous Rumble)

OFFSCREEN POST
The Ballad of a Hero
There’s never a more obvious statement than “the desert was hot that day.” And yet its never truer than today. The desert was indeed very hot that day. And for the students in Littletown, there was no better way to beat the heat than to sit in the shade of the school building and tell stories over recess.
Bingo had positioned herself in a nice cool spot in the corner between the schoolhouse and the fence, watching all the other kids with a curious energy. Right here, the slight gust that blew through the town was perfectly caught in the corner, sending a refreshing breeze through her fur. She closed her eyes and basked in the perfect equilibrium of chilling winds and desert heat, her ears perked up to catch the breeze and half-heartedly listen to conversation taking place around her.
“Well my favorite hero is Accelgor the Swift!” a Nincada said with his head held high. “He’s a— He’s a hero from the Gold Continent and he’s really fast and really— um—” He paused for a moment to think of another adjective. “He’s really fast. And he’s a ninja!” The Nincada quickly shifted side to side on his feet while making whooshing noises to emphasize his point.
Leaning against the wall of the schoolhouse with crossed arms, Terri raised an eyebrow and scoffed. “Yeah? N’ what’s he do?”
“Ummmm…” Nincada hesitated. “Well he’s really fast… and that’s how he beats the bad guys?” “Tha’s stupid,” she deadpanned.
“Nuh uh!”
“Well,” a Sandshrew piped up, placing her hands on her hips, “My heroes are Mrs. Mightyena and Mrs. Houndoom!” She proudly nodded to herself, “They’ve done a whole lot for all of us, after all.”
“That’th altho thtupid!” Kangaskhan replied. “I like them, but they’re not REAL heroeth! My hero ith-” “My hero is my mommy!” Cubone cuts their friend off. “She’s super cool and strong and I bet she can beat up more bad guys than Accelgor!”
Ryan stared at Cubone, blinking in confusion. “I thought your mom was dead?”
Cubone hits him on the head with her bone club in response. “Nuh uh! She’s just busy at Braviary’s Guild!”
The Scraggy yelped and rubbed his head. “It’s all good if you don’ got a mom, Cubone, y’ain’t gotta make her up…”
Somebody else piped up, “Yeah! We don’t got moms! Or dads!”
“I have my daddy-”
“Shut up, Hatenna!”
“I’M NOT MAKING MY MOMMY UP!”
Bingo sat there in silence, shuffling her paws as she continued to listen to the others chatter on. Heroes…
The conversation continued on as Bingo’s attention waned.
“My hero is from The Guild too! Her name’s Gothorita and-”
More of the students listed their heroes and argued about who’s was better, but they all blended together in her head.
“The Kecleon brothers are my heroes! Because they sell yummy apples!”
Something nagged at the back of the Lillipup’s brain, something just out of her reach. Something… What was it…?
“My heroes are my older siblins!”
Her head began to ache, the thumping of Rapidash hooves at the back of her mind, slowly building up like a stampede threatening to trample her thoughts into nothing more than dust. It was there, it was there, it’s right there, what was it?
What was it, what was it, what was it?
Tyson’s voice cut through Bingo’s thoughts. “—y hero is Mista Lucario, ‘cuz he brought me n’ my brothers to the orphanage after our parents died!” He then turned to Bingo with a grin. “Whaddabout you?”
Bingo blinked, “Who’s my hero–” That’s when it shot through her like a bolt of lightning, sending a shock down her spine and sending her thoughts into a whirlwind before she blurted out the memory. “Lucinda Gray.”
Kangaskhan looks at her with a tilted head. “Who?”
“Ah–” The Lillipup nervously smiled. Wonderful question, she just barely remembered herself. “She’s a hu–” She paused, catching herself, “Herdier. She’s a Herdier who was... about my age… if I recall correctly… She had saved her town from an incomin’ storm that probably would’ve wiped them all out if she hadn’t been able to warn them all in time.”
Tyson and Ryan looked at her curiously, intrigued. “Oh?”
Terri turned to glance at Bingo, feigning disinterest. “Neva’ ‘eard of ‘er.”
Wonderful observation, Bingo thought to herself, that would be because Lucinda Gray isn’t from this world!
Bingo shrugged, trying to contain her excitement about having remembered something, “Probably ‘cause she was from a time long passed. Don’t even remember the name of the town she saved…” She sat there in contemplation, straining her mind to recall even the tiniest of details.
“Though…” she added, “If I remember correctly there’s a song about her…?”
Nincada perked up, “How’s it go?”
“Uh, let me try and remember it all? I could... attempt… to sing it if you give me a moment?” Bingo internally cringed. What was she doing?
The Scraggy brothers immediately sat down with crossed legs in front of her, eager to hear her tale. Several of the other kids followed suit. Even Terri seemed to be mildly interested in what Bingo was going to say, even if she was pretending she wasn’t.
Oh Dragons she hadn’t expected them to give her their full attention–
“Right..” She swallowed, nodding her head to reassure herself, “The song is called The Ballad of Lucinda Gray.”
The Lillipup took a deep breath, closing her eyes, and began to sing. Her voice started quiet and hesitant but steadily grew stronger and more confident as the lyrics slowly left her lips.
Rumble, tumble, great big trouble,
a dark storm’s on its way!
Lightning flash and thunder crash,
much to the town’s dismay!
So grab that horse and pull them reins,
ain’t no time to delay~ay!
Racing through the streets of town,
here comes Lucinda Gray!
Lucinda Gray!
Lucinda Gray~ay!
Come on, make haste!
Miss Lucinda Gray!
“A cyclone’s on the way!” she cried
as she rode through the town
“Grab your kids, lock all your doors,
all hell is coming down!
The devil’s on his way here now,
he’s headed right this way~ay!
He’s brought the storm of death around,”
warned young Lucinda Gray!
Lucinda Gray!
Lucinda Gray~ay!
No time to waste
for Lucinda Gray!
Sideways rain and roaring winds,
the thunder shook the ground!
The devil searched for souls to keep
but none were to be found!
Alone atop the horse she rode,
a hero had saved the day~ay!
And as she faced the devil down
he took Lucinda Gray!
Lucinda Gray!
Lucinda Gray~ay!
The town was saved
by Lucinda Gray!
And with those final words, the song came to an end with Bingo breathing in and out to calm herself before opening her eyes to look at her schoolmates.
Surprisingly, it was Terri that was the first to speak. Having turned to fully look at Bingo as she sang, she squinted as she tried to process the story behind the lyrics. “So… this Lucinda Gray went ‘n faced the devil? Like, fer real? Or is it s’posed to be one them metaphors?”
Ryan piped in with, “I thought Cyclone was a girl though?”
“I don’t think she’s got a gender,” Tyson shrugged.
“Yea, but we always call her a the! Not a he… What if Thyclone is one of them tranthgenderth…”
The Lillipup sat there confused, tilting her head. Cyclone…? It ain’t about Miss Mandibuzz though.
Bingo spoke up, “What? The song ain’t about–”
“What if everyone forgot Cyclone’s pronouns and that’s why we call her a she now! I don’t wanna misgender her! Him? What if she comes n’ gets me!” Cubone said, concerned.
Terri sneered down at Cubone, “She gon’ take ya to the same place she took that Lucinda Gray, that’s what.”
Nincada shivered, “I don’t wanna go to hell for misgenderin’ her…” He paused for a moment. “I mean they.”
Bingo huffed, “Miss Mandibuzz didn’t take Lu–”
“Cyclone won’t take you yet as long as you behave!” Sandshrew nodded in a way she thought was reassuring, “She only takes bad kids! That’s what the Mayor says!”
The Lillipup grumbled to herself. This town has a big problem with interruptin’ others, don’t it?
“Yea!” Ryan snickered. “Bad kids like Terri n’ Terrii!”
Terri pushed herself off the wall in an instant, wounding her fist as she shot back, “She’s boutta take a dead kid to the afterlife if he keeps that shit up!”
Tyson clicked his tongue and looked off to the other side of the schoolyard, “Hey, I think your brother’s takin’ some kid’s lunch money without you.”
She shot her head in the direction Tyson was looking, shouted something in Spanish, and raced across the schoolyard to join her brother, completely forgetting about the ongoing conversation.
Bingo watched with a frown as the single Tandemaus went to join her brother. She’s starting to grow real tired of these mice…
The loud tolling of a bell cut through Bingo’s thoughts, echoing throughout the schoolyard and signaling the end of recess.
Bingo recoiled, squeezing her eyes shut and slamming her paws down upon her ears as the ringing of the bell shot through her brain like a bullet.
As the ringing began to fade she slowly opened her eyes, taking quick notice that the kids that had gathered around her not long before had moved and were all heading for the door of the schoolhouse and in turn left her line of sight, allowing her to see the entirety of the schoolyard.
And allowing her to zero in on the tip of a black tail disappearing behind the back of the storehouse for the school. What was…?
“Lillipup!” Houndoom called out to her. “Recess is over!”
Bingo stood there for a moment, staring off at the building with an innate curiosity before slowly turning her attention to Houndoom and running over while answering, “Yes ma’am, sorry ma’am!”
Scene End.

Gordon Lightfoot, the singer and songwriter, who has died aged 84, became one of Canada’s best loved musical figures, winning 16 of his homeland’s Juno awards. He scored eight Top 5 albums in Canada during the 1970s (including the 1975 compilation Gord’s Gold), four of them reaching No 1, and Sundown (1974) topping both the Canadian and the US chart.
He was held in huge esteem and amassed an impressive track record of having his songs covered by many of the leading artists of his era. The melancholy and lonesome Early Mornin’ Rain would become one of his signature compositions, covered by many artists including Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan, Neil Young and Paul Weller. Dylan, who would perform various Lightfoot songs in his own concerts, commented: “I can’t think of any Gordon Lightfoot song I don’t like. Every time I hear a song of his, it’s like I wish it would last forever.” Marty Robbins took Lightfoot’s Ribbon of Darkness to the top of the US Country chart in 1965, Harry Belafonte delivered a dramatic rendition of Oh, Linda, and Peter, Paul and Mary had a US Top 30 hit with For Lovin’ Me.
If You Could Read My Mind became his most celebrated song, a plangent meditation on the breakup of his marriage to his first wife, Brita Ingegerd Olaisson; they later divorced. His own version reached No 1 in Canada and No 5 in the US – his other chart-topping singles were Sundown, also a US No 1, and The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald – but the song went on to spawn more than 100 cover versions by such luminaries as Barbra Streisand, Johnny Cash, Olivia Newton-John, Glen Campbell, Liza Minnelli and Herb Alpert. “It was a kind of unrequited love song, partly due to love’s rollercoaster,” Lightfoot reflected.
If his personal life fuelled his art, he suffered for it too. In the early 70s his relationship with the backing singer Cathy Smith caused him a great deal of anguish – “men were drawn to her, and she used to make me jealous,” he confessed – but also prompted the writing of Sundown (when Smith was out partying without him) and Rainy Day People, a US Top 30 hit. Smith was later jailed for administering the cocaine and heroin mixture that killed John Belushi at the Chateau Marmont hotel in Hollywood in 1982.
Born in Orillia, Ontario, Lightfoot was the son of Gordon Lightfoot Sr and Jessie (nee Trill), who ran a laundry service. Jessie was quick to spot her son’s musical potential, and by the time he was 10 he was singing in public. As a boy soprano, he sang in local oratorio productions and in the church choir, and performed at music festivals. Aged 12, he appeared at Massey Hall, Toronto, after winning a singing competition. In his teens he learned to play the piano, drums and folk guitar, and was also a gifted track and field athlete.
At 18 he went to Westlake College of Modern Music in Los Angeles, where he studied orchestration and music theory. He left California for Toronto to launch himself on a musical career, working as a bank clerk to help pay the rent.
He was a member of the Singin’ Swingin’ Eight, who appeared on the Country Hoedown TV show, and played folk music in coffee houses. His first commercial recordings were released in 1962. His own composition, This Is My Song, which he performed with his singing partner Terry Whelan, appeared on the live recording Two Tones at the Village Corner, and several months later he released (Remember Me) I’m The One, another original though somewhat middle-of-the-road song, billed as Gord Lightfoot. It reached No 3 on Toronto’s CHUM radio chart. A follow-up, It’s Too Late, He Wins/Negotiations, took him to 27 on the CHUM chart.
Falling under the influence of the up-and-coming Dylan and a fellow Canadian singer-songwriter, Ian Tyson, Lightfoot began developing a more poetic, folk-style sound. In 1963 he travelled to Europe, putting in a stint as host on BBC TV’s Country and Western Show.
On his return to Canada in 1964, his reputation received a major boost when his songs Early Mornin’ Rain and For Lovin’ Me were both recorded by Ian and Sylvia Tyson and Peter, Paul and Mary. He signed a deal with Albert Grossman, the influential manager of Dylan and Peter, Paul and Mary, and released his debut album, Lightfoot!, in January 1966. This was for the United Artists label, but it was when he switched to the Warner Bros label Reprise at the start of the 70s that his career took off. His first Reprise release, Sit Down Young Stranger, reached No 12 in both Canada and the US, kicking off his spectacular run of 70s success.
His sales tailed off in the 80s, though he was constantly in demand as a live performer, and he enjoyed some belated chart success with the album Harmony (2004), which reached No 13 in Canada. However, the demands of the touring lifestyle found him dependent on whisky and pills. He would undertake arduous sailing and canoeing trips to dry out, and in 1982 finally gave up alcohol and took up daily gym workouts.
He survived a number of medical emergencies. In 1972 he was diagnosed with Bell’s palsy. In 2002 he almost died from a ruptured aneurysm in his abdominal aorta, and four years later suffered a minor stroke that temporarily impaired his guitar-playing. In 2019 he suffered a hematoma in his left leg, requiring surgery.
Lightfoot was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 1986 and the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame in 2001. In 1997 he received the governor general’s performing arts award, and he was made a Companion of the Order of Canada in 2003. In 2012 he was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
His second marriage, to Elizabeth Moon, ended in divorce, and he then married Kim Hasse in 2014. She survives him, along with his six children, Fred and Ingrid from his first marriage, Gaylen and Eric from relationships between his first two marriages, and Miles and Meredith from his second.
