I would like to thank J.F. Johns & Amazon Publishing for my copy of the ARC. Due to this kind gesture, I have decided to leave an honest review.

God damn you, Amanda! When will you research a book before you apply for the ARC? This book is a sequel series to a series called Eternal Darkness Trilogy. Luckily, you don't have to have read the first series to get to grips with it but I think it would help.

In a world where humans and cyborgs coexist, it is forbidden for them to interact. Terra has never grasped this law, but when your dad is an extremely important part of the government, she knows she is meant to be a good girl. In her posh neighbourhood, at her posh school, with her posh friends, but what happens if that never satisfies? Especially after the loss of her mother. Terra decides the only way to deal with her anger is the pits. Where humans & cyborgs alike come to fight, illegally of course. That is where Terra sees him, the silver-eyed boy who has plagued her dreams while he dies.. each and every time. Can Terra fight the urge to get involved in a revolution, or will she be the one to kick start it?

I actually really enjoyed this book, yeah the writing was a bit lost on me at times but it kept me gripped. I couldn't tell if he was going for a younger YA audience or not, but then some sexy time made me realise probably not but it did tend to fall that way.

The world-building had some real Hunger Games vs Divergent going on. There were 7 Capitals, each having a real futuristic theme which really gave it HG feels. Each Capital (district) served a purpose, had watchers (peacekeepers) plus had curfews. No man's land kinda reminded me of Divergent, and the walls/fences around the Capitals reminded me of both books but it certainly had its own spin on it which was good.

There was a lot of characters (not too many that would blow your mind) but a good few. I think this is where it would have helped to have read the first books that the story originated from as these cyborgs seem pretty badass. I even found myself rooting for them pretty early on in the book which was awesome!

Our leading lady Terra Underwood was rather good, she started to get a bit annoying nearer the end of the book but she started off pretty strong. I have a lot of love for our cyborgs. The twins Ten & Rife were so creepy but I absolutely loved their characters! They reminded me of something from the shinning and I could imagine them rolling around on their plastic tricycles whispering "oil rummmmm, OIL RUMMM".  

There were major strong females in here, Camille was obviously extremely cool, but Scarlette is going to be KICK ASS! or so I hope. Scarlet has the potential to knock it out of the park and I love the whole world destroyer thing. Morgana, we haven't heard much of yet so I am dying to see what happens with her character, I hope she's a super badass like Scarlet. Petra is a real devil, a proper Mike Tyson *wink wink* and she is ready to go to town! I always love a good villain, they make the story. There was a few characters who just went completely MIA like Hooky? He was a huge part then boom 0. Also, Terra's friend Damien?! Sasha & Damien both went MIA but Sasha still returns, Damien is just never heard from!

That brings me to our swoon-worthy cyborg males, and they certainly are hot hot. Eric Thorn has that cheeky cocky confidence around him that I absolutely love! He always seems up to something while not being up to actually anything. Malcolm Broddory we haven't heard much from him yet, but I can feel myself getting behind him. Then we have Kalem Akuma, oh how the Lord has answered our prayers! I never realised how much I wanted a cyborg boyfriend with serious KJ Apa feels (with KJ's natural colour of his hair of course). He comes across as mysterious, brooding, heart swooning male. He and Eric have done a number on me and I need another hit!

All in all the book was pretty good and I will certainly be reading on, I actually can't wait to see what unfolds.

OK you've done marvel and I also happen to rather DC, so Percy Jackson characters as DC characters? Please? :)

Sure! Again, I'm choosing based mainly in powers but also a little bit of appearence. 😌

Percy Jackson as Aquaman (Arthur Curry). For obvious reasons.

Annabeth Chase as Batgirl (Barbara Gordon). They are both awesome fighters, but also incredible smart and great at strategy.

Grover Underwood as Swamp Thing. They are both fierce protectors of nature.

Nico Di Angelo as Batman (Bruce Wayne). This is more cause of the fact that both Bruce and Nico, always attempt to help people but still keep themselves in the shadows.

Clarisse La Rue as Big Barda (Barda Free). Both big girls and awesome fighters.

Thalia Grace as Livewire (Leslie Willis). Leslie control of electricity is similar to Thalia control of lighting. Also, Livewire appearance in Young Justice kind of reminds me of Thalia.

Luke Castellon as Maxwell Lord. Maxwell showed himself as an ally a lot of times, but he secretally hated superheroes and was actually planning how to bring them down.

Jason Grace as Shazam (Billy Batson). I know that Jason is often compared with Superman, but I think his powers are more like Shazam.

Leo Valdez as Firestorm (Ronnie Raymond). The pyrokinesis is presented in both characters.

Piper McLean as Wonder Girl (Donna Troy). Donna's Lasso of Persuasion reminds me of Piper charmspeak.

Hazel Levesque as Terra (Tara Markov). They share geokinesis powers. Hazel may applied them differently than Terra, but it is the same base of controlling things that come from earth.

Frank Zhang as Beast Boy (Garfield Logan). Again, for obvious reasons.

Reyna Avila Ramirez as Wonder Woman (Diana Prince). Both of them were trained since kids to be leaders and fighters.

Rachel Elizabeth Dare as Dream Girl (Nura Nal). Nura can predict the future in her dreams, kind of like the prophecies visions.

According to programming hi-lights of DisneyABC press the episode synopsis is:

“when the Emperor’s Coven comes to Hexside, Gus teams up with an unlikely ally.”

First of all the episode title is obviously a reference to the book series “Maze Runner” whether or not this episode will actually have anything to do with the series is to be debated upon. At least I hope not for the mental health of the cast

But I wanna get into the “unlikely ally” part of the synopsis. A lot of people think it’s gonna be Matt which is understandable but I think it may be Hunter.

Yes, Amity and Willow are also in this promo art but that’s not the only thing I’m getting at.

Gus is the only member of the four that Hunter hasn’t had a one on one episode with, not to mention this piece of promotional art by Dana herself:

Flapjack is on Gus’ shoulder! And while it could be a Gus + Palismen team up I doubt Flapjack is gonna let Hunter out of their sight after the events of “Hollow Mind”

That along with the fact that Zeno Robinson is already credited on the wiki as Hunter gives me hope that these two are going to team up to take down the Emperor’s Coven invading Hexside.

Yeah, I know people can edit the wiki pretty easily and it ultimately… proves nothing.

As for my actual plot predictions for this episode beyond just Hunter and Gus working together against The Emperor’s Coven:

As to why would Hunter even be at Hexside in the first place? Besides The Owl House that’s the first place Belos would look for him.

But we do know Hunter now has social media and (presumably) has Willow and the rest of The Emerald Entrails contact information. Perhaps for Hunter it’s a matter of being at the wrong place at the wrong time.

And if the episode takes place in a maze perhaps other members of The Emerald Entrails are in the maze with Hunter and Gus but they’re split up and the two are forced to work together to save their mutual friends.

Gus still having a dislike towards Hunter for multiple reasons but putting their friends first as the great friend he is.

Maybe Gus doesn’t know about Hunter’s general (gestures to everything) situation and thinks he’s at Hexside with The Emperor’s Coven.

If this one screencap is anything to go off of Gus looks angry and terrified and possibly confronting someone?

Hunter catching Gus off guard maybe? if the Illusion Coven Head is in this episode it could also be them catching Gus off guard or trying to provoke him.

We already know Gus has insecurities around his illusionary magic having a Coven Head possibly slap that in your face would have those thoughts swimming back tenfold.

As to what or how I believe the Illusion Coven Head will be like or how they will behave if they are in this episode (which I believe they are) I believe them to be quite manipulative but not outright malicious about it like Terra Snapdragon is.

Considering the natures of illusions and how Coven Heads are their magic themselves the Illusion Coven Head could be watching over the students the entire time or pretending to be one of them, tricking them and manipulating them from the inside.

The whole “maze” set up could be similar to what Terra tried to instigate with the “Us vs Them” mentality.

Gus and Hunter are both characters desperate to prove themselves and their worth to other people. I however do not think they’d fight each other if it came down having to rely on each other to save their mutual friends.

I think there’d be internal conflict on Hunter’s side sure, the feeling of that conditioning lingering at the forefront of his mind and wanting to be recognized by any adult and be praised but not wanting to let down his new friends again after he just barely got their trust.

I also wouldn’t put it past Gus if he struggled as well. Hunter has threatened to kill his friends and tricked him and his friends into joining the Emperor’s Coven and he didn’t seem too pleased about it either.

I doubt he’s forgiven Hunter about it and he may not throw it in his face but it’s definitely not forgotten.

As for further thoughts on The Illusion Coven Head those will be in a separate post.

“Okay, crew,” Chief of Operations Annabeth Chase, a proud Minervan, held the attention of her group as she searched all of their eyes with her own piercing silver ones. “Our new First Officer, you’ve all met him. Peseus Jackson. I know at least two of you are friends with him, and Chief Science Officer DiAngelo is in an involved romantic relationship with him. I need the three of you to give us a run down on humanology so we can welcome our first and only human crew member appropriately and treat him well. My knowledge of humans is limited, but he’s not from the colonies in the Milky Way Galaxy, he’s from actual Terra,” she squeezed her face up in a common Minervan expression of distaste. “My knowledge of Terra is limited to this, which I will share with you now: Terra is a Class 2 Death Planet, humans are apex predators and the dominant species. They are reigned by the chemical imbalances in their brains and can be erratic in behavior because of it. However, despite these things, I have been advised to get a human on our team. So, Valdez, Underwood, DiAngelo: speak.” She leaned back, metallix skin glinting in the energy efficient lighting.

“First off, uh, humans are about a 2.2 on a food chain that goes to a level 5, so I wouldn’t call Percy an apex predator,” Grover Underwood, a satyr from outside the Milky Way Galaxy shuffled his hooved feet. “He’s actually a vegetarian-”

“What’s a vegetarian,” Annabeth cut in, narrowing her eyes.

“Um, well, most humans are omnivores and can eat both plant matter and animal flesh. But, because of personal choices, Percy only eats plant matter,” Grover explained.

“Humans can eat plant and animal matter?” Clarisse grunted.

“Their teeth and digestive systems have adapted to both, yes. But, again, Percy only eats plant matter, so not a scary apex predator. Plus, most humans don’t hunt anymore.”

“We’re getting off track,” Annabeth groaned. “But good to know about plant matter. Valdez, go.”

“Percy is awesome. We lived together in the academy. He is from New York City, where there are no true predators and also no real natural places, so he will adjust just fine to being on a ship for an extended period of time, but he does love his plants and having and caring for houseplants is statistically good for humans. Percy gives his names. So, we should make sure he has a leafy plant or a flower or something,” Leo added, and when DiAngelo nodded in agreement, Annabeth noted down to bring some Terran plants on board. “Also some humans have physical needs,” Leo tilted his head in confusion as he tried to explain it. “Percy uses exercise as a way to exorcise his mental demons, if you will.”

“Mental demons, is he ill? Possessed?” Annabeth cut in.

“No, but it’s how you said. They’re ruled by emotion. If we don’t have a therapist on board, he’ll need to exercise and train and use physical activity as an outlet. I suggest a training regimen with the tactical team,” Grover nodded to Clarisse, their Chief Tactical Officer.

“That can be arranged,” the Martian nodded in agreement.

“DiAngelo, anything to add?” Annabeth turned to their resident Plutonian, who shrugged his shoulders, his large black wings moving in sync with his gesture.

“If anything comes up, I’ll let you know. But if any of you make him feel uncomfortable I’ll make you regret it,” he raised a single eyebrow. His boyfriend was a big tough guy, but he was also a big softy who would pack-bond with a Roomba if he came across it.

“That’s not helpful. But thanks,” Annabeth clenched her hands.

“Oh, one thing,” Nico raised a finger. “Don’t mention that he’s from a Death Planet. Terrans don’t know they’re on a Death Planet. And it will freak him out. Don’t let him know.”

“I’m sorry, what?” Will Solace, their Chief Medical Officer squawked. “He doesn’t know he’s from a Class 2 Death Planet?”

“You don’t know you’re adaptable until you meet people who aren’t. And you don’t know you’re on a death planet until you leave it. He’ll figure it out, but don’t bring it up right away. Humans get flooded with negative hormones when their worldview is altered until they come to terms with it, and it would negatively affect his physiology and performance to be shocked like that,” Nico elaborated.

“Okay…” Annabeth sighed. “We’ll meet him tomorrow. I will see you all then and you better be on your most professional behavior.”

Nico smirked. It would surely be interesting. Everyone had preconceived notions and prejudices about humans and while Percy was a big and tough human who could kick your ass with one hand tied behind his back, he would also do anything for those he cared about and was a huge dork. And he definitely knew he was on a death planet.

So, when Percy arrived, and Nico had decorated his room with houseplants and blue blankets and decor, he was overjoyed. He would miss his Golden Pothos (lovingly named Billingsly), and his Snake Plant (William Snakespeare), and he was glad to still have plants in his life. Nico had even gotten him a plant light so they would stay alive!

He was glad to see Leo again, and Grover was his best bud so that was cool. He also got to meet Grover’s long time girlfriend Juniper, who was also a herbivore and lived solely on plant matter. The pilot, Jason Grace, was a Jovian who Percy had already formed a bro bond with, and he had taught Jason all about handshakes and high fives. He’d met Will Solace, the only person other than Nico who actually knew about human physiology. He did have to explain to Will that he had ADHD and dyslexia, so the CMO had decided to get some more Terran books on those to more adequately treat his patients. It was nice. Clarisse was a hard ass but Percy loved training with her. She taught him about more weapons than they even had at the Academy, and taught him hand to hand in various different styles.

Annabeth was confusing. Percy was convinced she didn’t like him, but he could also tell she was trying very hard not to offend him.

Probably because everyone was terrified of humans. Earth was the Australia of space after all. So, he knew that him smiling all the time was taken as a sign of aggression, like animals baring their teeth. He knew the laughter he so often emitted freaked others out because it was a non-translatable noise that nobody understood.

Percy knew they were trying, but they just didn’t know or care to know enough about Earth to understand him.

So, that’s how he ended up using plain water as a contact solution because he ran out of saline eight days ago. It’s not like he could ask Will if he could use medical grade saline for something so silly. So Percy sat in his commander chair and rubbed roughly at his eyes as they itched and fluttered.

“Commander Jackson, are you well?” Annabeth called from her position nearby, though it was loud enough for others to turn. He pulled his fists away from his reddened eyes and irritated skin.

“Oh, yeah. But my contacts have been bothering me. I ran out of solution and have been using plain old water to clean and store them in,” Percy sighed and rubbed his fingers under his eyes to readjust them.

“Contacts?” Annabeth asked, confused.

“Yeah, hold on,” Percy pulled his contacts case out of his satchel and, in an agonizingly amusing moment, he pulled his lower lid down and used his fingers to pull the contacts out and put them into the case. He heard the gasps around him and retching noises, but couldn’t see the horrified faces until he put his glasses on.

“Holy Father Pelor,” Nyssa, another Vulcan like Leo, gulped. “Did he just… remove a piece of his eyes?”

Percy pretended to be surprised, because this was just another thing to add to the “Death Planet” list: Humans can remove pieces of their visual organs when they become irritated. He loved messing with them.

“Percy, I thought I told you not to remove those in front of anyone,” Nico joined in, rolling his eyes in a very Terran gesture.

“They were bothering me, you know when they get itchy and dry it’s just easier to take them out.”

“So what are the glass and metal contraptions you wear now?” Nyssa asked against her better judgement.

“When I remove the contacts, I lose my ability to see clearly and I need glass lenses to alter my vision enough to function,” Percy explained.

“So, you removed an imperative part of your eye, and then you couldn’t see, so you made a prism that reflects light in such a way that it imitates the top layer of your eye?” Annabeth questioned.

“Essentially, yes.” He was hesitant to tell them that contacts were not a part of him, and were in fact, a foreign object. How would they react to the fact that he was actually terribly nearsighted and had to physically put pieces of flexible plastic in his eye orifices to see?

“Fascinating,” she nodded, as if agreeing with the new information. “Disgusting, but fascinating.”

Storia Di Musica #124 - David Bowie, “Heroes”, 1977

Quando uscì nel 1976 Station To Station, la sua “maschera” del tempo era quella del Sottile Duca Bianco: nell’ultima delle sue infinite trasformazione si dichiarava fan di Nietzsche, auspicava un Hitler inglese e salutava i fan con il braccio teso. Anni dopo David Bowie dichiarerà: “Ero strafatto tutti i giorni, fu un periodo in cui non capivo più niente”. Addirittura si allontanò dalla musica per l’interpretazione da protagonista de L’uomo che cadde sulla terra, che non fu il successo sperato al botteghino. Tossico, disperato e confuso, con i suoi amici Iggy Pop e Tony Visconti parte per Berlino, un posto dove “la gente aveva molte cose più interessanti da fare che seguire un cantante”. Ci sono altri due artefici al leggendario periodo berlinese: Brian Eno, i cui esperimenti ambient affascinarono sin da subito Bowie; il genio e la chitarra di Rober Fripp, leader dei King Crimson, sperimentatore, creativo di rivoluzioni musicali. Gli anni passati a Berlino “produssero” tre dischi, Low (1977), Lodger (1979) ma soprattutto il disco di oggi “Heroes” (1977) che non solo è uno dei capolavori di Bowie della sua quarantennale carriera ma uno dei dischi più significativi della musica rock. Per me, come molti critici, va inserita come parte integrante del periodo berlinese anche The Idiot (1977) di Iggy Pop, prodotto da Bowie che lo confeziona a sua immagine e somiglianza e firma insieme a Iggy tutti i brani (tra cui alcuni storici come No Fun, Fun House, Fun Time e la storica China Girl che Bowie riprenderà con ancora più successo negli anni ‘80). “Heroes” è, come fulcro della trilogia (o tetralogia, per le cose appena scritte) una risposta al furore iconoclasta e devastante del punk. Bowie ritrovata la calma, l’ispirazione e lontano dagli eccessi con rinnovata serenità si immerge nella musica elettronica, che proprio in Germania aveva la sua patria di elezione, nella sua idea di perfezione tecnica e sonora. L’unico disco effettivamente registrato a Berlino, ai famosi Hansa Studios, che dopo la pubblicazione dell’album divennero meta di pellegrinaggi musicali, è un disco che accenna ad una dimensione più ottimista sul futuro e sulla questione umana. Per registrarlo, soprattutto le basi ritmiche, spesso bastò una sola esecuzione, seguendo i dettami delle “Strategie Oblique”, un metodo di potenziamento delle facoltà creative ideato da Eno con l’artista Peter Schmidt, che consisteva in un mazzo di 100 carte contenenti direttive vincolanti su come superare blocchi creativi e su come dare nuove forme, in questo caso, alle canzoni. Ne fu coinvolto lo stesso Fripp, che in un solo giorno, solo con la sua leggendaria Les Paul e un amplificatore Marshall registrò le sue parti, impregnate di feedback e di mito. Il disco si può dividere in tre parti: quella dove Bowie sperimenta il suo approccio avanguardista alla sua musica, in brani storici come The Beauty And The Beast, Joe The Lion, Sons Of The Silent Age; un’altra parte dove è più sentita la presenza di Eno, negli strumentali Moss Garden, dove Bowie suona un antico koto giapponese (un particolare strumento a corda della tradizione antica giapponese), in Neuköln (che è un omaggio ad un quartiere di Berlino, che però nella grafia corretta ha due “L”) Bowie suona un assolo di sax niente male, The Secret Life Of Arabia potrebbe davvero apparire nei dischi ambient di Eno. Tra omaggi a Florian Schneider,, co-fondatore del gruppo musicale Kraftwerk, in V2-Schneider (con annesso ricordo dei V2, i missili tedeschi della II Guerra Mondiale), uno dei brani più oscuri e decadenti della carriera del Duca, Sense Of Doubt, spicca, su tutte, una delle canzoni più belle e, all’epoca, audaci, della musica. “Heroes” fu ispirata a Bowie dal vedere dalle finestre degli Hansa Studios, ex caserma della Gestapo e situata proprio a pochi metri dal confine dal Muro, un uomo e una donna che si baciavano “by the wall”: quei due erano Tony Visconti, il suo produttore, e Antonia Mass, corista e amante di Visconti, che all’epoca era sposato con Mary Hopkins: su un muro quasi spectoriano di chitarre (con i riverberi e i feed back di Fripp) si alza una delle sue prove canore definitive, quasi drammatica per la sua epicità, e quel testo, quel “we could be heroes just for one day” segnerà tutte le generazioni a venire. Sia il brano che il titolo dell’album hanno le virgolette in tono ironico, quasi a spezzare la tensione del brano e dello stesso disco. Non posso dimenticare la spettacolare copertina: il fotografo giapponese Masayoshi Sukita, che seguirà Bowie per tutta la sua vita artistica, si ispirò ai lavori dell'artista tedesco Erich Heckel, in particolare all'opera Roquairol: la stessa idea fu usata anche per la copertina dell'album The Idiot di Iggy Pop. Le mani di Bowie, ritratto per una volta senza lustrini nè trucchi, sembrano quasi mimare il movimento di togliersi una maschera, per mostrare la sua vera natura: tra l’altro la foto in bianco in nero amplificò la suggestione della sua anisocoria, perchè Bowie non aveva gli occhi di colore diverso, ma solo le pupille di dimensioni diverse: giovanissimo ha partecipato ad una contesa per una ragazza, durante la rissa che ne è derivata George Underwood, che suonava con lui nel suo primo gruppo,  gli avrebbe assestato un pugno (secondo altre versioni gli punse l’occhio con un compasso) capace di causargli questa differenza di diametro delle pupille. L’ennesima particolarità di un genio della musica, dello stile, dell’immaginazione, che ci manca tanto.
