Underrepresentation in Homelessness Statistics
Any statistics around homelessness are greatly underrepresented. Here’s why:
• The numbers that tell how many unhoused people are in the United States are done using something called Point In Time (PIT) counts.
• PIT numbers are used to identify needs for services, and help shelters qualify for funding.
• PIT counts are done on a random night in January every year.
• PIT numbers only count people who are legally considered homeless (couch surfing isn’t considered homelessness, legally) This means PIT counts are only counting people in shelter beds, and those visibly sleeping outside.
• On this random night in January, it’s often freezing. When I was unhoused in New England winters, I can tell you I wasn’t sleeping outside. I’d stay up and walk around if I couldn’t find a place to crash, and sleep in the daytime. I knew sleep meant death. Most people who do sleep outdoors are usually hidden well, because that means warmth and safety.
• Most shelters simply do not have the funding to staff outreach workers to go out to do PIT counts. Even if they have the funding, it’s hard to find unhoused people, so staying out the whole night is difficult.
• From unofficial counts done similarly to PIT counts in warmer months, it’s easy to see booming numbers of unhoused people. More people aren’t unhoused in the summer, it’s just less dangerous to sleep outdoors.
• PIT counts especially misrepresent youth, disabled people and other marginalized people, because they’re often couch surfing while homeless. Couch surfing is not legally considered homelessness.

PSA: FENTANYL IS COMING TO A CITY NEAR YOU & WHEN IT DOES, FORGET EVERYTHING YOU EVER KNEW
It'll end up in the schools you send your children to, the sidewalks of the playgrounds they once played in so youthful, it will tear apart the monuments and buildings that once made your town beautiful, it will kill more people than you know, and it'll be your spouse or your child, your next door neighbor, your childhood hero. And it'll go from everything to zero before you know. Soon, it'll be all everywhere you go. Even if you stay clean, you'll get swept away in the spiral.

"PAPER BOOTS CLAIM ORDERED PROBED," Toronto Globe. April 19, 1933. Page 9. ---- York Township Council Resolves to Prohibit "Tent Colony" ---- Immediate investigation was ordered by York Township Council yesterday into allegations made at a meeting of the Mount Dennis Property Owners, to the effect that paper boots" were being supplied by the Welfare Department to relief recipients, who, it is claimed, in some cases were also denied a supply of bed covering.
When a motion was introduced delegating Reeve A. J. B. Gray to at- lend a conference between the Emergency Municipalities Committee and Premier Bennett to discuss the continuing of municipal relief, Councillor W. M. Graham suggested that an- other delegate accompany the Reeve. This brought Councillor W. J. Noble, whose political affiliations do not coincide with those of Councillor Graham, to his fect. "If you are trying to play politics, I am opposed to your suggestion," he told his colleague.
"My friend is so evil-minded that he accuses me of playing politics. He is all wrong," retorted Councillor Graham. This remark aroused Councillor Noble's ire, and he demanded its withdrawal. Under persuasion both Councillors retracted, and the incident closed.
"We must take some steps to stop the township becoming a tent colony," declared Reeve Gray, in supporting a motion which, in effect, would prohibit citizens living under canvas without approval being secured from the Board of Health. "I understand that there are 200 waiting for better weather so that they can pitch their tenta," the Reeve stated. With Councillor Graham opposing, on the ground that it interfered with citizens' personal rights, the resolution carried.
Former Township Clerk W. A. Clarke informed Council that he was willing to forego his pension of $2,000 as from June 1, conditional on payment to that date and a settlement of $1,000. The offer was agreed to and Mr. Clarke thanked for his generous action.
It was decided to approach the Federal Government, asking for a rebate of all sales tax on relief orders. J. Earl Lawson, M.P., will be asked to take the matter up at, Ottawa.

oof, it's 3 years later and Portland is more ruined than ever. I love street art but the people in Portland who suffer from optimism - just lol.
“If you promise to stay alive just a little bit longer I promise that we are going to make this world a place worth living in by any means necessary. I ain’t giving up. I swear.”

The Great San Francisco Earthquake 1906
At 5:13 a.m., an earthquake estimated at close to 8.0 on the Richter scale strikes San Francisco, California, killing hundreds of people as it topples numerous buildings. The quake was caused by a slip of the San Andreas Fault over a segment about 275 miles long, and shock waves could be felt from southern Oregon down to Los Angeles. San Francisco’s brick buildings and wooden Victorian…
