Okay listen We're Bad People Now: vampire coming of age but set after whatever the,, intitial meeting / event was?? Boy met girl, one of them was a vampire, there was a whole set up and struggle and story there, one of them was turned and they left together, and now it's the whatever comes next. The learning to live together when you're two teenagers locked into an eternity. Their relationship is still a little undefined and they're both still trying to understand what's happened to them??

Also,, something something protagonist is a girl but actually is trans masc / non-binary and slowly leans into and realizes this over the course of the story,,,

it seems (from rough observation, not any surveys yet) that in general fandom culrure:

-a lot of characters that are commonly headcanoned as trans men are male in canon (ie the character transitioned years before canon)

-a lot of characters that are commonly headcanoned as trans women are... also male in canon (ie the character is still an egg/closeted)

and i think that raises a lot about 1: fandom's seeming inability to connect to characters that are female in canon 2: the differences in how people view trans men vs trans women and our transition processes

"he's a girl to me" isn't a substitution for ever giving a shit about female characters

While I'm MD posting, I find it so incredibly funny that the ship name for a character who wears a short skirt and garters x a character who wears thigh highs and no pants is called oilrose. Most other ships in that fandom are portmanteaus like you'd expect, but this one pairing is an exception just so they can be called "wet android pussies'". That is the horniest thing I've ever heard

Brainstorming some more stuff for the story with the grape twins and I am very much enjoying reinventing every character in the universe. What if you were a teen parent and didn't realize until the kid you abandoned popped up out of nowhere hanging out with a bunch of supervillains and with a Huge amount of daddy issues. The pains of being an alien and not knowing until you're an adult

Circle of Magic by Tamora Pierce may predate the classification of YA, but I genuinely think it kept me alive as a youth.

Not the least of which because it has an active meditation lesson throughout the book as a part of the magic system that is literally just box breathing, grounding and mindfulness exercises. As an undiagnosed neurodiverse trauma victim, it literally gave me tools to work through my own difficulties while also telling a really good story. A lot of really good stories since it’s an ensemble cast.

There are important things in these stories for adults, but also deeply important lessons and tools for teens, children, young adults and youths in general who might not have the guidance and security of peers or professionals or authorities to look to for information and guidance.

Not all YA needs to or should satisfy these requirements, but there is a purpose for that genre and finding solace in it as an adult isn’t a failure as an adult. Not all authors use the genre as an excuse to write less compelling stories, those authors simply look down on and infantilize their audience.
