Together with Franz Hart and Josef Wiedemann, Johannes Ludwig (1904-96) in many ways shaped the architectural formation of postwar Munich: as long-term professor at Technische Hochschule and designer of e.g. the Paul-Gerhardt-Kirche (1953-56) or the reconstruction of the Antikensammlung am Königsplatz (1959-67) Ludwig realized remarkable buildings emblematic for his architectural concept. Influenced by Scandinavian masters Gunnar Asplund, Sigurd Lewerentz and Steen Eiler Rasmussen he embraced a differentiated modernism quite unusual in postwar Germany.
Strangely there isn’t much literature on Johannes Ludwig and the present slender volume represents the most comprehensive overview of his life and work. Published on the occasion of his 80th birthday and a retrospective at Technische Universität München „Johannes Ludwig - Bauten Projekte Möbel“ collects his most important buildings and projects as well as the furniture he designed throughout his career. Preluded by Friedrich Kurrent’s introduction the catalogue shows the two sides of Ludwig’s language, namely one indebted to Scandinavian brick modernism and one aligning with the currents of German postwar architecture: while his church designs in particular are characterized by a geometric austerity his houses, apartment and office buildings very much show a restrained postwar modernism adjusted to its urban and architectural context. The same restraint holds true for his furniture designs, irrespective of typology, as his chairs, lights, tables and drawers are handsomely artisanal but highly unpretentious.
Both Ludwig’s architecture and furniture in the present volume are concisely presented in black-and-white illustrations, plans and occasional drawings that provide a deeper understanding of the architect’s work. Together with the work catalogue in the back of the book it still is the most comprehensive publication on this undeniably important architect.

Albert Speer
Speer was born in Mannheim, into an upper-middle-class family. He was the second of three sons of Luise Máthilde Wilhelmine (Hommel) and Albert Friedrich Speer. In 1918, the family leased their Mannheim residence and moved to a home they had in Heidelberg. Henry T. King, deputy prosecutor at the Nuremberg trials who later wrote a book about Speer said, "Love and warmth were lacking in the household of Speer's youth." His brothers, Ernst and Hermann, bullied him throughout his childhood.Speer was active in sports, taking up skiing and mountaineering. He followed in the footsteps of his father and grandfather and studied architecture.
Speer began his architectural studies at the University of Karlsruhe instead of a more highly acclaimed institution because the hyperinflation crisis of 1923 limited his parents' income. In 1924, when the crisis had abated, he transferred to the "much more reputable" Technische Hochschule München (now Technical University of Munich). In 1925, he transferred again, this time to the Technische Hochschule Berlin-Chalottenburg (now Technische Universität Berlin) where he studied under Heinrich Tessenow, whom Speer greatly admired. After passing his exams in 1927, Speer became Tessenow's assistant, a high honor for a man of 22. As such, Speer taught some of his classes while continuing his own postgraduate studies. In Munich, Speer began a close friendship, ultimately spanning over 50 years, with Rudolf Wolters, who also studied under Tessenow.

JERUSALEM (AP) — An American biochemist whose research has helped scientists make inroads into treating coronavirus and HIV has won this year’s Wolf Prize, a prestigious Israeli award in the arts and sciences.
Pamela Björkman of the California Institute of Technology won the prize for “offering new hope in the fight against infectious diseases,” the Wolf Fund, which awards the prize, said Monday.
Björkman’s research “unlocked the secrets of how the immune system identifies and battles pathogens, developing game changing approaches to combat some of humanity’s most formidable viral enemies,” the fund said.
Eight others also received the state-funded prize, which has been awarded annually for 47 years. Many of the award winners have gone on to receive Nobel prizes.
Björkman grew up in Oregon and studied at the University of Oregon, Harvard and Stanford before moving to Caltech to begin teaching in 1989. Her research focuses on how the immune system identifies invading pathogens. She has broken ground, the fund said, in how scientists understand T-cell recognition and immunization strategies for HIV. T cells are white blood cells that help fight off diseases.
Since the COVID-19 pandemic, she has worked on developing a new strategy to design immunogens that trigger certain antibodies against coronaviruses.
“Pamela Björkman’s work provides a glimpse of a new rational design strategy for future vaccines to deal with humanity’s greatest immunization challenges,” wrote the fund.
This year’s prize in architecture was awarded to Chinese architect Tiantian Xu for her work in rural China, which the prize committee said “transformed villages throughout China economically, socially, and culturally.”
Xu studied architecture at Harvard Graduate School of Design before returning to China, starting her own firm and working on a number of public projects that have kickstarted village economies, the fund said. They include a bridge connecting two villages separated by a flood, factories for tofu and brown sugar and renovating abandoned stone quarries.
It lauded her “pioneering approach to rural development — one that contrasts with the sweeping, uniform strategies that characterized China’s urban expansion.”
Other recipients of this year's award include Jeffery Dangl of the University of North Carolina, Jonathan Jones of the Sainsbury Laboratory in England and Brian Staskawicz of the University of California, Berkeley for agriculture.
Also receiving the prize are professors Jainendra Jain of Pennsylvania State University, Moty Heiblum of Israel's Weizmann Institute of Science, James Eisenstein of Caltech in physics and Helmut Schwarz of the Technische Universität Berlin in chemistry.
Past laureates include astrophysicist Stephen Hawking, artist Marc Chagall, conductor Zubin Mehta and musician Stevie Wonder.

Iron catalyst study provides insights into ammonia decomposition
Using ammonia is regarded as a promising method of transporting hydrogen. However, an efficient process is also needed to convert it back into hydrogen and nitrogen. An international research team has gained new insights into the mode of operation of an iron catalyst that can be used to split ammonia into nitrogen and hydrogen. Hydrogen is converted into ammonia to make the energy carrier easier to transport. This means that catalysts are also needed that can subsequently break ammonia down into its starting materials again. A team from the German Ruhr University Bochum, the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Energy Conversion (MPI CEC) in Mülheim an der Ruhr, Technische Universität Berlin and the Italian Institute of Technology in Genoa describes how the iron catalyst enables this reaction in detail in an article published in ACS Catalysis.
