Did the Hamilton family keep in touch with Fanny after she left?
Unfortunately, with how hard it is to get access to the Hamilton family correspondence, let alone transcribe a lot of it; the answer is not so entirely certain. Nothing I have ever found suggests so, but I also have not transcribed every - or even half - of the letters the family wrote. Not to mention, it is a fair possibility any correspondence with Frances or mentioning her could have easily been destroyed for privacy or just lost to time.
I find it hard to believe Elizabeth or any of the children would have completely cut ties with someone they had lived with for ten years and described as family, though. [x] The only thing that could possibly suggest so, is the fact that James knew a bit about Frances' life after she left, but he very well could have just heard it circling through the news (Bold text is mine);
She was educated and treated in all respects as his own daughter, and married Mr. Tappan, an eminent philanthropist of New York.
Hamilton, James Alexander. Reminiscences of James A. Hamilton: Or, Men and Events, at Home and Abroad, During Three Quarters of a Century. United States, C. Scribner & Company, 1869.
I have heard the misconception that James was one of the only kids to still cherish Frances because his own daughter would later be named Frances ‘Hamilton’ Bowdoin (1813-1887), but that is realistically not the case as James' wife, Mary ‘Morris’ Hamilton, had a mother named Frances ‘Ludlam’ Morris (1766-1852), and it was likely her namesake instead of Antill's.
I believe there was a historian who seriously suggested that Frances officially departed from the family to live with her sister, Mary Antill, due to the Reynolds controversy catching publicity because it was during the year of 1797. And while that might actually provide reason as to why it isn't known if Frances kept contact with the family or not, perhaps severing ties due to the public shame—I still wouldn't full-heartedly believe that with what lack of evidence remains.

HEY do you want a nice long read about a progressive, farmcore, anticapitalist utopia, written a whole dang century ago?
I love Austin Tappan Wright's Islandia and can't recommend it enough. I converted this giant tome into eBook format for accessibility, because this book is a big honkin' TOME.
Tumblr media
(Mirror here on my website) Dropping my long-form description and book info behind a read more.
Islandia was written in the 20s by a man who absolutely matched Tolkein's worldbuilding energy. Genealogies, maps, an entire history written by a fictional Frenchman... this guy went HARD. And what he produced was a fictional country in our world called Islandia: an agrarian, low-key anti-capitalist utopia, isolated from the rest of the world due to strict border and trade policies.
This novel (originally even LONGER but cut for publication, and it's STILL gigantic) is written from the perspective of a young American man chosen to be consulate during a crossroads in the country's history: they are about to vote on whether they should open trade/diplomacy/borders. During his time in Islandia, he travels, makes friends and connections and romances, and finds his true values.
He both loses himself and finds himself in Islandia, which is underscored by his internal conflict on a return trip to America. Who would want to stay in our country if there was this amazing country full of beautiful slow living and relaxed, loving, and pragmatic social structures?
There's political intrigue, romance, culture clashes, life lessons, coming of age, navel-gazing, and even a little action in there too. The novel is a wonderful, slow-moving, LONG escape with great, wholesome farmcore vibes, and I really recommend it. It's also just... really surprisingly progressive for the time period, in very subtle ways.
Another fun fact: this book was so good that the editor who helped publish it went on to write and publish THREE fanfiction novels set in Islandia.
Anyway, if it sounds good, click through for some eBook formats! Please share with anyone you think might appreciate this. I just want to get it out there to audiences that might not have had access to it before.
Warnings:
- The protagonist is an absolute dingus with women for a good chunk of the book. HE GETS BETTER. But you'll be facepalming and judging him a lot.
- The neighboring country, which they have conflict with, is mostly black folks, and the discussion of them isn't particularly palatable. Luckily, it's not a constant topic, and given the time period it's on the tame side. Pretty much what you might expect, but then down a notch.

YES! ABOUT TIME a university dance company (Momentum Dance Co. from Vanderbilt University in Nashville) does their interpretation of Tami Tappan Damiano's cover of "Hit Me With a Hot Note" in CHARACTER SHOES! It's such a change of pace from renditions done at dance comps that look like this:

Can't wait for a vernacular jazz dance take on this cover! I'm thinking something like this:
