Rewriting Film History as Latinx Shark Dancers in Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story
Tumblr media
West Side Story, widely regarded as one of the greatest movie musicals of all time (10 Oscar wins, including Best Picture!) is returning to the silver screen. Director Steven Spielberg has reimagined the film, which was adapted from the original 1957 stage musical. It hits theaters December 10, and we simply can’t play it cool, boy!
The story is about fierce rivalries and young love in 1957 New York City pitting the white Jets and the Puerto Rican Sharks against each other. When the 1961 film was made, there was only one Puerto Rican in the entire cast. Rita Moreno, who won an Oscar for her portrayal of Anita, has been vocal about her disdain for having to wear makeup that darkened her skin tone.
This time, in Spielberg’s West Side Story, the Sharks are represented by dozens of Latinx actors, including many of Puerto Rican heritage. “It would have been impossible, as well as unthinkable, for us to make a film of West Side Story without doing our best to gather a truly diverse cast and crew, and in countless ways, the diversity of the people who made this production gave it its form and substance,” Spielberg says in Laurent Bouzereau’s book West Side Story: The Making of the Steven Spielberg Film. Rita Moreno serves not only as executive producer on the film, but also plays Valentina, the Puerto Rican drugstore proprietor and the widow of Doc, who owns the store in the original film.
Dance Spirit spoke with Sharks Yesenia Ayala (Clary), Carlos Gonzalez (Chucho), Jacob Guzman (Junior), Melody Martí (Pili), Ilda Mason (Luz) and Tanairi Vazquez (Charita) about being a part of this extraordinary company, meeting Rita Moreno and being properly represented on the silver screen.
Most of these actors have Broadway shows on their resumés, including the most recent West Side Story revival.
“All those people are some of the most incredible artists and human beings I know,” Justin Peck, the film’s choreographer told Dance Spirit. “So I can't wait for what this will mean for them and their futures.”

On discovering West Side Story
Tanairi Vazquez: Seeing Rita Moreno in West Side Story as a little girl is what made me want to dance and perform. I saw her on the screen and thought she looked like me.
Ilda Mason: I didn't know West Side Story before moving to New York City from Panama eight years ago. I learned about it while studying Musical Theatre and Acting for Film. It wasn't until I got my first job in the U.S. that I fully experienced the beauty of this show. I feel so fortunate that West Side Story was my first professional musical here and that I've had the fortune of having done four productions of it. Three of them were completely different, including the most recent Broadway revival and Spielberg's remake.
Melody Martí: I sat and watched the film for the first time with my mom and my two older sisters. I don't remember how old I was, but I was no more than 10 years old. I felt thrilled to see so much dancing in the film.
Yesenia Ayala: I would always go to the video store. I feel like I was the only one who would go to the musical section and get [movie musicals including West Side Story].
On auditioning for the film
Mason: I found out through my friends sending me a casting-call notice. It was an open audition. I didn’t have an agent or anything. I recorded my audition in Panama.
Carlos Gonzalez: I actually missed the audition for the movie because I was in Cuba working on my house. I was crying that it wasn’t meant to be. A couple months later, my agent called and said there's actually an audition in Miami and Puerto Rico. My husband [musical director Kurt Crowley] was the one that pushed me to go. And I did. My agent calls me and says, ‘Hey, I know you're going back to Cuba, but Steven Spielberg wants to see you himself for the final audition.
Vazquez: I kept getting callbacks. I even went in for Anita. I made it towards the end. We danced with some of the boys. We did some partnering. Then they had us read. After Christmas 2018, I got the official word that they wanted me to be a Shark girl.
Ayala: During Carousel [on Broadway], Justin and I became really good friends. Justin needed some dancers to work with him for a workshop and asked me to be a part of it. I didn't realize Steven Spielberg was going to be there. He came for a few days with his handheld camcorder. We shot a whole day in the rehearsal room so he could get used to filming dance because he has never done that before. It was really cool to be a part of that process, because it was like creating and seeing what Justin was envisioning. But then also seeing Steven trying to figure out what angles to shoot things from. By the end of the week, they’re like, “We like you.”
Jacob Guzman: I couldn't go to the invited call because I was on tour, so I went to the open call on my day off. I luckily got a spot and into the room.
On booking the movie
Guzman: I had booked the lab [of the West Side Story Broadway revival] when I booked the movie with my identical twin brother, David. It’s kind of crazy growing up Puerto Rican never having done West Side Story—and then I'm doing it twice in one year.
Mason: It was one of the happiest days of my life. It's a true dream come true. It sounds cliché, but that's exactly what it is. I moved from Panama to this country to be on Broadway and to work on films. So the fact that my first movie is with Steven Spielberg? Dying! I found out a full six months after the final audition, which was just one week before my first day of rehearsals: April 8th, 2019. My soul needed the opportunity to be a part of this so badly, and I still can't believe I was able to tell this story.
Vazquez: I did the revival in 2009, which was my Broadway debut. So, it’s full circle.
On the new choreography by Justin Peck
Martí: I have done West Side Story with Jerome Robbins’ choreography at Montclair State University. Experiencing new choreography for the first time was challenging in a good way. There was a lot of partner work and lifts as well as technicality behind the movement. It was heavily ballet-based, with layers of Latin flavor sprinkled on top of it. It felt so good to bring that movement to life through the film.
Mason: Justin Peck’s choreography is wonderfully challenging, and it's exactly how it could have been done when the movie was done originally, it is that same ballet-based style. It was so wonderful to dance to it, and it felt so natural. It was stunning. I remember being on set and watching the monitors thinking, “This is so wonderful.”
On working with Rita Moreno
Vazquez: To be in this new version with [Rita Moreno] in it was too much for me to handle. I’m in the same movie with Rita Moreno. And not just any movie, but West Side Story. Which is my story. It's an important story for Latinos, and Puerto Ricans, who left to make a better life for themselves. Since I was a little girl, my parents always said, “Be proud of where you come from. You're Puerto Rican. [Rita Moreno’s] Puerto Rican. Look at the way she moves, dances and expresses herself.” I would be in my room and just try to be like her because I was so inspired.
Ayala: In the original West Side Story, she was funny, she was courageous, she was loving. She was the ultimate person. I saw myself in that as a kid, especially as a Latina.
Mason: My first day of rehearsal was also the day I met Rita Moreno. She was an explosion of awesomeness. She walked in with such energy, power and charisma. We all jammed to Latin beats and it was incredibly surreal. It is a huge honor to be in this movie with her. She is an icon and to me, she represents all the things that are possible for me as an immigrant Latina.
On rewriting film history
Martí: When I first watched the film, I didn't realize the lack of Latino representation it had. I assumed that the Sharks were truly Puerto Rican. Many were Italian and passed as Puerto Ricans. Little did I know that Rita Moreno was the only Puerto Rican in the film.
Ayala: I think they're doing a very smart thing and deepening the characters and giving everything a more realistic approach.
Vazquez: I think for Latinos, conversations are happening. But we are one of the lowest groups represented in Hollywood right now.
Mason: Doing West Side Story is the biggest gift for any Latino. How many times have we seen so many movies where the actress is supposed to speak Spanish but doesn't speak Spanish? This movie is going to make every wrong right. We're going to tell the story of how the Puerto Ricans truly live. How does being Latino feel in this country? How the world really was back then. Steven Spielberg really put a lot of effort and love into it.

(Side note: The partnering might be a bit off. I first wrote this up like March 2017 and I don’t know if I was just guessing or actually knew for sure. I haven’t seen the show in a couple months, so I can’t verify how accurate that is, but the rest of it should be good. Also, the tracks differ for each company. I know the Angelica Tour tracks as well, but not so much the Chicago or West End tracks.)

My Experience Seeing Hamilton On Broadway
Ok, so first off, I saw Hamilton on Friday August 25. And It was fucking fantastic!
-Jevon McFerrin was Alexander Hamilton that night and he was amazing, he was so funny and I loved the way he portrayed the character!!!
- There were tiny little musical things between songs that aren’t on the album and I fucking loved them.
- They had one of the actors “carry” the bullet, and it was so cool!
- There was a fucking mouse skin onstage, I personally didn’t see it, but Thayne Jasperson said it was there!!!
- During Right Hand Man, the fucking canons physically shook me, it was so freaking cool. Like they dead ass shake the room!!!
- I freaking cried like a little bitch when Laurens died, and I also cried when Philip died, and during Non-Stop, and during the finale. Omfg I need help.
- The front row should wear rain ponchos because of how much spit flies of that stage!
- Non-Stop had me shook! The harmonies were amazing!
- 4 words. Thayne Jasperson is amazing!
- King George is fucking hilarious. I think it was after What Comes Next, he blew a raspberry and it was fucking hilarious.
- There were very tiny scenes that didn’t have really many lines between some of the songs and they were so amazing. Right after You’ll Be Back, King George walks off very slowly as one of the British soldiers sneak up behind two American soldiers and kills one of them and King George snaps his head back to look at them, then the next song starts.
- At the start of Act two, when the lights are dimming and the people are going back to there seats, THAYNE JASPERSON POPS UP OUT OF THE CONDUCTORS PIT AND SITS THERE SINGING AND THEN HE GOES UP ON THE STAGE! I LOVED EVERYTHING ABOUT IT BECAUSE SOME PEOPLE IN THE FRONT ROW WERE STANDING WITH THEIR BACKS TOWARD THE STAGE AND THEY GOT SCARED AND IT WAS SO FUNNY, OMFG I LOVE THAYNE JASPERSON SO MUCH!
- Eliza lets out a loud scream when Philip dies and its so fucking sad because the whole room is dead silent.
- During My Shot, in Lafayette's verse when hedoes the whole anarchy part, he goes “Anarchy, how you say? Oh (in very nasally American/New Yorker ish accent) ANARCHY” It was so damn funny!!
- Anthony Lee Medina plays Laurens/Philip, and when Hamilton learns that Laurens had died, he comes out on stage an sings and (i was in the 6th row) you can see him tearing up and it was so sad.
- Nik Walker played Burr, and he was amazing, Wait For It, The Room Where It Happens, and Dear Thodosia were amazing!!
-Yorktown was fucking amazing, the choreography was fucking amazing!
- Omfg, Nik Walker looked right at me during some of the songs and I lost my shit!
- THE ADAMS ADMINISTRATION WAS SO COOL
- Lexi Lawson actually burned the paper during Burn, and the is smelled like fire and it had me shook. She also had a kind of growl in her voice during some of the lines and it really added to the whole “Eliza being angry thing”
- When Hamilton says “I think Your Pants Look Hot, Laurens I like You alot” J. Quinton Johnson (who plays Mulligan/Madison) bends over and sticks his leg out and runs his hand up his leg and it was so fucking funny!!!!!!
- I’m A General Weeeeeeee!!!!
- It’s Quiet Uptown was amazing!
- The whole show was amazing.
- The ensemble was so amazing!!
There is obviously a lot more that happened but it has been 3 days so I don’t remember everything in detail!

hamilton - 10/8/16, evening
I mentioned last week that I totally forgot to type up my show notes for the last time I saw Hamilton, and as the next time I’m seeing Hamilton is imminent, it seemed like a good time to get on that /o\
Saturday, October 8, evening show
A.Ham: Michael Luwoye Eliza: Lexi Lawson Burr: Brandon Victor Dixon Angelica: Mandy Gonzalez GWash: Chris Jackson Laf/Jeff: Seth Stewart Mull/Mad: Andrew Chappelle Laurens/Philip: Thayne Jasperson Peggy/Maria: Jasmine Cephas Jones KGIII: Rory O'Malley Philip Schuyler, etc: Gregory Haney Seabury: Roddy Kennedy Lee: Neil Haskell Eacker: Gerald Avery Ensemble: Gerald Avery, Carleigh Bettiol, Hope Easterbrook, Gregory Haney, Neil Haskell, Sasha Hollinger, Roddy Kennedy, Kamille Upshaw, Tanairi Sade Vazquez, Voltaire Wade-Green, Nik Walker
Mostly thoughts on new performances. (Previous write-ups here and here.)
Right off, I was SO disappointed to be missing Javi and Anthony. Javi, because I’ve been D Y I N G to see his AHam since like, last year, and Anthony because a) I knew he was leaving soon and I love him and the last time I had been at the show I’d missed him for Thayne AGAIN and b) because Becca has now ONLY SEEN THAYNE JASPERSON AS LAURENS/PHILIP. It’s hard enough explaining to her why Laurens resonates with me so much as a character. It’s ninety times harder explaining it while gesturing at Thayne Jasperson.
The usher’s pre-show speech had us in stitches, she was HILARIOUS. Also, after two shows of carefully examining the bathroom system, Becca and I were able to employ a trick that got us almost immediately on the bathroom line, despite sitting in the rear mezz. We were in and out SO FAST that we even had time to try the fancy cocktails for the first time and won a Hamilton sippy cup for our troubles!
Michael: Like I said above, I was disappointed to be missing Javi...right up until Michael opened his mouth. I was B L O W N  A W A Y by this guy he is SO incredibly talented. I’m so jealous of all the people on the west coast who have him as their fulltime Hamilton. He didn’t have as many little flourishes as Lin, both in delivery riffs and interactions, but he really inhabited the character. His Ham is much more self-assured of his success, where Lin’s is more nervous and desperate for it. He has an amazing voice (when he sang his first bits, I leaned over to Becca and said, “RIGHT I forget that people who aren’t Lin know how to sing!”). Had great chemistry with Mandy, pretty good chemistry with Lexi and Jasmine, not so great chemistry with Thayne. Overall, his performance was really heartbreaking in a different way than Lin’s is.
BVD: HE IS SO. GOOD. His Burr is very different than Leslie’s. I definitely felt like he wanted to be friends with the gang, but made himself hold back, whereas I think Leslie’s Burr wanted friends period, not necessarily the gang specifically. “Wait For It” was a religious experience, but it took me a little bit to warm up to his “Room Where It Happens.” The added dimension of his strong desire to be friends with our boys made the end extra heartbreaking. He flubbed a line at the start of “The Adams Administration” and the entire theatre LOST IT.
Lexi: I loved her “Schuyler Sisters” and “Helpless,” but was less impressed with...the rest of her performance. She didn’t scream before “Stay Alive (Reprise)” or gasp at the end and I desperately missed those things. I’m going to be super sad if no one else does them now that Pippa’s gone because they add so much to the strength of the story. She had great chemistry with Mandy and Jasmine.
Mandy: HOLY SHIT MANDY IS AMAZING. I honestly got chills during “Satisfied” and cried at the riff at the end. I also cried during “Schuyler Sisters.” I cried a lot. Her angry Angelica in act two was SO FIERCE and she had great chemistry with both Michael and BVD, which my low-key Angelica/Burr loving heart was super into.
Chris: Amazing, as usual. I was SO happy that Becca got a chance to see him.
Jasmine: Still the hidden gem of this show, making something incredible out of very little.
Rory: Still hilarious, as usual.
Chappelle: Very good! He didn’t have as much to do as Mull/Mad as he did as Laf/Jaff, but he still made it shine. I laughed inappropriately at so many of Madison’s lines in particular. I cannot even explain in words how he delivered “Why he even brings the thunder” except to say it was SO WHITE. His “France” was great too.
Seth: Not that impressive. I felt like he was trying too hard to be Daveed’s Laf/Jeff instead of making it his own the way Chappelle does. He did not have the necessary stage presence to pull off Jefferson the way that Daveed played him--he needed to approach the character differently. He’s great rapper, tho--his “Guns and Ships” was cleaner than Chappelle’s.
Thayne: U G H. At least he smiled less during his death scenes this time? But he’s still their weird awkward white friend following them around and it’s still not great.
I really wish I had typed this up back in October because I am 100% sure I had a few additional thoughts that I didn’t jot down at the time and also BVD posted a video of his fuck-up on his Twitter that I’m not even going to try and go back and find now.
I’m really excited and interested to see an entirely new cast with an entirely fresh take on this material! I don’t know for certain, obviously, but I feel like touring casts usually have a different take on the material than Broadway casts because there’s a little bit less of that replacement baggage following them around?
But I will SEE FOR SURE in less than a week, OH MAN. I’m p excited.
