Do you remember what the first piece of mythology was that you read?
What is your favorite myth?
and today it is probably "Coyote and the Mouse Girls", a Koryak story I read in Barry Lopez's wonderful "Giving Birth to Thunder, Sleeping with his Daughter, even if the Coyote in it isn't really Coyote but Kutkh, the Koryak Raven-Spirit who sometimes created the world, and who has a lot of back-history with the mice, at least according to the Wikipedia entry.
Tomorrow it will be something else.
#A few days later Coyote washed up on the beach. Some people came along and brought him back to life. They took him home. In those days you f#Lopez#Barry Holstun. How exactly does yeeting one's dick at the god of embalming prove your innocence? Unless it was just to get Anubis to go "I'm not dealing with this shit" and aquit you just so he never had to deal with such bullshit again.
Ha, so that bit was from The Tale of Two Brothers, and the two eponymous brothers are named Anpu/Anubis and Bata. They may represent two deities, but this is no certainty since they invoke the Ennead within the story. At any rate, the story starts with Bata living with his older brother Anpu, who is married. One day Anpu's wife tries to seduce Bata but he refuses and leaves, upon which she goes to Anpu and accuses Bata of having tried to rape her. Anpu flies into a rage and tries to kill Bata. They end up on opposite sides of the river and Bata cuts off his genitals to show that he's sincere about his innocence. The story goes on after that, but I'd recommend reading it for yourself because it's not too long and quite entertaining. You can find a PDF here (link opens to an immediate download)!

First Steps On This Journey
Welcome to My Art Journey on Tumblr: Unveiling the Mystical Realms of Mythology, Big Cats, and Fantasy
Hey there, art lovers and fellow dreamers!
I’m Duat Designs, and I’m thrilled to welcome you to my Tumblr page! Here begins an enchanting voyage into the world of art, where every brushstroke tells a story, and every pixel captures the essence of myths and dreams.
Exploring the Mystical Realms
From the ancient sands of Egypt to the mystical whispers of forgotten lore, my art dives deep into the heart of mythology. The gods, goddesses, and legends of ancient Egypt have always fascinated me. Their tales of power, creation, and the afterlife are rich with symbolism and intrigue. Through my creations, I aim to breathe life into these timeless stories, offering a glimpse into the divine and the enigmatic.
The Majesty of Big Cats
In my art, you'll frequently encounter the powerful and graceful forms of big cats. These majestic creatures embody strength, elegance, and a primal beauty that captivates and inspires. Whether prowling the dense jungles or basking in the golden savannahs, big cats are a recurring theme that symbolizes both the fierce and the serene.
Delving into the Supernatural
The supernatural world is a tapestry of the unknown, woven with threads of magic, spirits, and the unexplained. My fascination with the supernatural stems from its ability to stretch the imagination beyond the mundane. Expect to see ethereal beings, ghostly apparitions, and scenes that bridge the gap between our world and the beyond.
Crafting Tales of Fantasy
Fantasy is where my imagination truly takes flight. I believe in the power of storytelling to transport us to realms where dragons soar, knights embark on epic quests, and magic flows as freely as water. Each piece I create is a doorway into a new adventure, inviting you to step into a universe where the extraordinary is the norm.

Karpeles points out that the early Egyptian literature was particularly rich in folk-tales, or Märchen. It is possible that in Egypt, as in Greece and Persia, the folk-tales as well as the folk-songs, and such an occasional epic as the Poem of Penta-on, were recited to the people by peripatetic reciters or rhapsodists. There are references to such recitations taking place at court and at the banquets of the rich.
It would have been interesting if it had occurred to some Hebrew scribe, endowed with a sense of humor, to send for the royal library in Thebes, as a remembrance of the guests who had gone out of Egypt, an Egyptian rendering of the Book of Exodus, or even of the Song of Miriam.

The Legend of the Sphinx
Long ago, in the golden sands of ancient Egypt, a creature unlike any other stood guard over the land of the Pharaohs. It was the Sphinx, a majestic being with the body of a lion, symbolizing strength, and the head of a human, representing wisdom. Its purpose was to protect sacred secrets, hidden treasures, and the mysteries of the gods.
The Sphinx was no ordinary guardian. Its presence alone filled travelers with awe and fear. Legends whispered that it asked riddles to those who dared to pass by. Only the wise and brave could hope to answer, while those who failed would meet a grim fate.
One day, a young shepherd named Ammon wandered into the shadow of the Great Sphinx.
The sun was setting, casting golden rays over the statue's face, which seemed almost alive. Ammon had no grand aspirations; he was just a simple boy with a heart full of dreams. His village was suffering from a drought, and the elders spoke of a hidden spring beneath the Sphinx’s gaze, a spring that could save them all.
Determined to find this spring, Ammon stepped closer. Suddenly, the ground trembled, and the mighty Sphinx turned its stony head to face him. Its voice boomed like thunder:
"Who dares disturb my eternal vigil?"
Ammon’s knees trembled, but he stood firm. “I am Ammon, a shepherd from the village of Karesh. My people are dying of thirst. I seek the spring hidden beneath your gaze.”
The Sphinx's eyes glowed with an ancient light. “Bold, young one. But courage alone will not suffice. To reach the spring, you must answer my riddle. Fail, and your life will be forfeit. Do you accept?”
Ammon swallowed hard. He thought of his family, the children playing in the dusty streets, and the elders who prayed for salvation. “I accept.”
The Sphinx nodded and recited the riddle:
"I walk on four legs at dawn, two legs at noon, and three legs in the evening. What am I?"
Ammon’s heart raced. He had heard tales of the Sphinx’s riddles, each more challenging than the last. He closed his eyes, thinking deeply. Then, a memory surfaced—a story his grandmother had once told him about the journey of life.
Opening his eyes, he answered with confidence: “The answer is a human. In the morning of life, as a baby, we crawl on all fours. At noon, as adults, we walk on two legs. And in the evening of life, as the elderly, we use a cane, walking on three legs.”
The desert fell silent. Even the wind seemed to hold its breath. Then, the Sphinx’s mouth curled into a smile.
“Wise beyond your years, shepherd. You have answered correctly.”
The ground beneath Ammon shifted, revealing a hidden staircase leading deep into the earth. The Sphinx spoke again: “Go forth, brave one. The spring lies below. Take what you need, but remember—such gifts are not without cost. Use them wisely.”
Ammon descended into the cool, dark chamber, where crystal-clear water flowed from a hidden spring. He filled his clay jar, feeling a deep sense of gratitude. Before leaving, he whispered a prayer of thanks.
When he returned to his village, the water revived the people, bringing life back to the parched land. The villagers celebrated Ammon as a hero, but he never claimed glory for himself. He often returned to the Sphinx to leave offerings of food and water, honoring the ancient guardian.
As years passed, the story of Ammon and the Sphinx spread across the land, inspiring countless travelers to face their own challenges with courage and wisdom. And though the Sphinx remained silent, its watchful eyes seemed to hold a spark of approval for those who dared to seek answers to life’s greatest riddles.
Thus, the legend of the Sphinx endured, a timeless tale of bravery, wisdom, and the unyielding spirit of humanity.
