Summary

The chapter began with the introduction of Ono no Yoshifuru . This was what it read: Councilor Ono no Yoshifuru, Senior Fourth Rank Lower Grade, (later Junior Third Rank). His ancestor was Ono no Imoko, who fought with Emperor Yang of the Sui Dynasty (which is in present day China). His Grandfather Ono was the Prime Minister of the Field and the Judge of Hell [1]. His older sister was one of the Rokkasen (Six Famous Poets), Ono no Komachi. His younger brother was Ono no Michikaze, one of the Sanseki (The Three Famous Calligraphers of Japan).

Yoshifuru asked the woman with the glasses about what happened to everyone in the house, she answered that they were living in peace. Yoshifuru asked if she used medicine or something on them and said that it would have been convenient not to wake him up regardless if they are planning to steal from him or take his life and asked the 'Thief Without Stealing Group' what do they want with him. The woman did not answer, but remarked that people on the battlefield see thing differently than others. Yoshifuru wondered if she was talking about a riot instead of a battlefield? The woman told him that she was doing a lot of research. Yoshifuru asked what she was looking for. The woman told him that their princess will ask him directly and that it was for his own good not to lie. The Princess who was Taira no Satsuki AKA Takiyashahime made a grand entrance on a carriage carried by a giant spider. Takiyashahime demanded to know where the box or bag that was supposedly entrusted to Yoshifuru at Kumoiji Temple in Higashiyama within the last twenty years is. Yoshifuru said that he did not know what he was entrusted and where the box or the bag is. Takiyashahime asked him what were the contents inside, but realized that the item might not have been at the mansion and asked him did he hid it somewhere else. Yoshifuru said that he did not know and could not answer. Takiyashahime told him that if she found out that he lied she will come back to the manison and the flashback ended.

Seimei commented on the incident and said that it was interested. Hiromasa added that since there were no casualties and nothing was stolen would calling the incident funny be appropriate. Seimei just said that saying that it was interesting was good enough. Yasunori said that the source for searching for a princess in a party coat was Kumoiji Temple.

Seimei looked at Yasunori in disbelief and asked if that was the reason his teacher was at his house tonight. Yasunori said that it doesn't matter and he just wanted Seimei to hear it because strange things were happening lately and the upper part of the Dairi Utaawase is nearer.[2] He also reminded Seimei that women were being murdered in quick succession. Seimei responded and said that it seemed that 8 pregnant women were murdered in just over a month. Yasunori corrected him and said that they were actually 9 pregnant women that was murdered, which shocked Hiromasa. Yasunori told Seimei that a man who was grilling charcoal in Mount Kurama that afternoon found a woman's corpse in the mountains. The woman was from the Imperial Palace and returned to her house in Kifune after she became pregnant, but disappeared two days ago. Seimei commented about it saying surely it is not an accident or the work of a beast. Yasunori continued and said that he had seen it to, but it looked like the women were already dead and the child in the womb was scraped out. Seimei asked if the children were males or females. Yasunori told him that they were males. Seimei asked what happened to the children that were scraped out of the womb, but from what I translated Yasunori did not see what happened to the children. Seimei said those were unpleasant events and Hiromasa agreed. Seimei then suggested that they should leave the murder investigation to the Prosecution Office unless there is a request to corporate with the Onmyo Dormitory.

Yasunori told Seimei that he is about to talk about the main topic and Seimei remarked that Yasunori is too long-winded. Yasunori asked Hiromasa if he knew who Taira no Sadamori was. Hiromasa knew him as the Guard General but only knew him enough to greet him.

The narrator said that it was the story of a certain warrior meaning Taira no Sadamori.

Yes it is just ashame that this game has been out for several years and no signs of Kuzunoha as well as Seimei's father Abe no Masuki/Abe no Yasuna. Also, many people are unaware of this, but Seimei in the orginal mythology and folklore was both a demigod and a hanyo because his mother was a Inari Fox messenger who served Miketsu (also known as Ukanomitama) and was enshrined at Shinoda Shrine in Osaka, Japan. Yet the Takamagahara Arc treats him as unimportant.

As for Doman, I can't stand the way the writers treated him as an unimportant characters when varies of other works feature Seimei and him as rivals.

this is where i tell everyone that there's an ongoing adaptation of onmyoji's takiyashahime novels, with a very foxy and repressed seimei (he's called haruaki in this version) and a scrungly hiromasa who is just. SO GOOD. this is from december 4th's chapter, which annihilated me on the spot

``Onmyoji '' was performed in 2000 and `` Onmyoji Kotodama no Maki '' was performed in 2002 under the KOtoDAMA project. Starring Nobuo Kodama (as Seimei).

The OSK Nippon Opera Company performed `` The Prince of Darkness: Hiromasa Minamoto and Seimei Abe '' in 2001 , `` New Prince of Darkness '' in 2003 , and `` Onmyoji: The Prince of Darkness ✡ Seimei Abe '' in 2022 . In 2001, it starred Aoi Yo (as Hiromasa) and Shun Natsuki (as Seimei). In 2003, Shun Natsuki (as Seimei) starred. In 2022, Yang Lin (playing Seimei) will star. Both are musical works written and directed by Sawako Kitabayashi .

In September 2013, a new kabuki play `` New Kabuki Onmyoji Takiyashahime '' was performed at the newly opened Kabuki -za Theater, Kakifuki Ochi Kugetsuki Hanagata Kabuki, written by Toyoshige Imai . Seimei was played by Somegorō Ichikawa, the 7th generation , and Kikunosuke Onoe, the 5th generation, played Takiyashahime . Received the 42nd Otani Takejiro Award . [24] In April 2023, it will be re-performed as `` New Onmyoji Takiyashahime '' at the Houou Festival April Kabuki commemorating the 10th anniversary of the new Kabukiza opening. Seimei was played by Hayato Nakamura , and Hiromasa was played by Somegoro Ichikawa VIII .

In July 2017, the reading drama `` Onmyoji Fuji, Koiseba Hen' ' was planned and operated by Jnapi LLC. Four cast members will perform in two different productions, one in the dark ( Shinjuku Face ) and one in the positive (Rokugyoukai Hall), with different art sets, lighting, and music. The role of Seimei is played by Junichi Suwabe , Kenjiro Tsuda, etc.

From February to March 2022, it was performed at Shinbashi Enbujo and Kyoto 's Minamiza Theater with Ken Miyake in the lead role , with the title `` Onmyoji: Generation Hime ''. The production is Hiromi Suzuki , and the script is written by Nozomi Makino .

A bit of a distraction: The only reason I know that Onmyoji exists is because I saw a doll of one of the characters, black hair, big red symbols over his brows, fox ears. I kinda really wanted it but since those dolls are expensive as all hell, and I only wanted the doll because I like the head, I had to come to the conclusion that it wasn't for me. That smile tho, pity pity.😔Especially since I prefer getting a naked doll and making my own clothes, and the only option was getting all the clothing, make-up and hair. Seeing that it's not a show on netflix brought all those thoughts back, and now I'm gonna watch the show because I'd like to see who that character is, in case he's part of the show.

I hope this was a good distraction from some of the more tense asks. Confusion is also a form of distraction.

Sounds like a particularly foxy take on Abe no Seimei who is an actual historical figure but also basically Japanese Merlin—i.e. the prototypical wizard figure constantly borrowed into pop culture of various types.

One of the pieces of folklore about this guy is that his mother was a fox spirit. He accreted a pretty hefty body of legends in ye olden times, making him ripe for pop culture use now.

Basically, Yumemakura Baku wrote a bunch of novels about him in the 80s where he's hanging out with Minamoto no Hiromasa (another actual historical person, though not someone known to be buddies with the real historical Seimei), and it kicked off a feeding frenzy as everybody put five-pointed stars (Seimei's symbol) all over everything and adapted the novels a billion times.

Some of the more recent takes have been two Chinese movies: the lulzy Yin-Yang Master, based on the cell phone game based on the novels, and Yin-Yang Master: Dream of Eternity, where Hiromasa got an upgrade via a lot of black leather and a bad attitude.

(Boya and Qingming are just the Chinese readings of Hiromasa and Seimei's names in Chinese characters.)

I'm partial to the old Japanese live action version that YYM: DOE was heavily referencing. Less black leather. Similar level of hoyay.

Now about the not fully human thing. Wasn't Seimei said to be descendant of sky gods and sea gods just like many other famous Japanese People? Also, He is said to be the descendant of Emperor Kogen's son Ohiko no Mikoto on his father side of the family. The Japanese Emperor is considered to be the child of heaven, which means that Seimei is considered to be a grandchild of heaven just like the man in the Takiyashahime Onmyoji Ezoshi Manga said that Taira no Masakado was a grandchild of heaven due to being a descendant of emperors.

Do you know why Abe-no-Seimei became so popular compared to any other onmyoji in folklore and literature? Is it because of who wrote his stories or something else?

There is no single clear answer. It seems safe to say there are multiple interconnected factors at play. 

Seimei’s real career was genuinely extraordinary in some regards. To begin with, it was unusually long. He was around 85 years old when he passed away, and historical sources would indicate that he was still fairly active in old age (in fact, most references to him which are fully verifiable come from the second half of his life). Shin’ichi Shigeta actually argues here that Seimei's longevity in no small part contributed to cementing his legend.

However, it’s hard to argue that the times when Seimei lived were not a factor in its own right too. Institutional backing was no longer the sole reason behind the relevance of individual onmyōji. As I discussed in my recent article, by the middle of the tenth century their clientele expanded. And to find new clients, personal charisma was necessary. The shift started slightly earlier already but it doesn’t seem like the likes of Shigeoka no Kawahito or Kamo no Tadayuki left quite as much of an impression as Seimei and his contemporary Kamo no Yasunori in the long run. Legends do deal with earlier onmyōji at times, or rather reinvent earlier figures, especially Kibi no Makibi, as onmyōji, but this is often merely a way to make Seimei’s or Yasunori’s deeds appear even more amazing by making them a part of centuries old legacies (granted, standalone tales of Makibi appear for example in Konjaku Monogatari already).

Seimei’s personal influence is evident in the fact that he seemingly was responsible for popularizing formerly obscure Taizan Fukun no sai as one of the main onmyōdō rituals (check Shigeta’s article above for more specific evidence). Note that this was a performance so popular the early medieval reinterpretation of Amaterasu was in no small part driven by efforts to make her fit into rituals similar to it and Enmaten-ku. There’s also evidence that Seimei had an impact on the popularity of tsuina, a ceremony originally held only in the court but later also in private houses of nobles which served as a forerunner of modern setsubun. 

The Abe clan remained influential in official onmyōdō circles long after Seimei’s death, and his heirs obviously invoked his fame to validate their own influence. There are texts only compiled after the Heian period which were attributed to him, such as Hoki Naiden. This obviously further contributed to the spread of his legend, making him relevant even as onmyōdō changed.

I don’t think it matters who wrote down the legends though, at least not before the Edo period. However, there are at least some individual elements which absolutely became such a mainstay of modern portrayals of Seimei because of the fame of specific authors who introduced and/or popularized them. A good example would be the Kuzunoha story, which was only invented in the 1600s and attained popularity because of Ryōi Asai’s Abe no Seimei Monogatari (I am not aware of any older legend claiming Seimei was not fully human, unless you want to count the Shuten Dōji variants presenting him as a manifestation of Kannon or Nagarjuna).  Another thing which comes to mind as an example of influence of specific works of fiction is portraying Dōman as older than Seimei, which is a convention started by Edo period theatrical performances as far as I know. Dōman's historical counterpart was pretty obviously younger (granted, there's also no evidence he interacts with Seimei). He was still active three years after Seimei’s death, and there’s no indication he was somehow 90+ years old. 

Bit of a digression but it’s worth noting Dōman isn’t Seimei’s only rival in the early stories, in Konjaku Monogatari he also faces a certain “fearsome fellow” named Chitoku who does seem to be older than him. He is an unlicensed onmyōji and comes from Harima, so it's easy to draw parallels with Dōman. However, they aren’t really similar characters; while Dōman is pretty firmly portrayed as a shady figure - a curse specialist first and foremost - Chitoku actually seems to utilize his skills to deal with pirates troubling his area. He just learns he’s a big fish in a small pond after unsuccessfully challenging Seimei. Still, I wonder if the two may have merged at some point in popular imagination.

Takiyasha Hime Onmyoji Manga Summary Volume 1 Chapter 1 Part 1

"Taiyasha Hime Onmyoji" is a webcomic by Comic-Walker. Here is the link to the first chapter of the comic.

I will provide a summary based on what I interpreted on my translator app. If someone who is fluent in Japanese what to provide a better summary or a translation, they are welcome to do so.

I am going to divide the chapter into two parts in order to prevent my post from being too long.

The scene started with young Abe no Seimei who is known as Shinodamaru at the time instead of Dojimaru and young Kamo no Yasunori. Shinodamaru used his fox senses and told Yasunori that he sensed oni coming from the Rajomon Gate. At first Yasunori dismissed it and say this was not the season for oni, but realized it is.

Yasunori told his father to wake up whom is presumably Kamo no Tadayuki. He said that the Night Parade of Hundred Demons are coming. Tadayuki asked his son "What's is the big fuss?" And wondered if he was sleep derived and said, "Even on the day the azimuth gods move places, there will be a smile."

Tadayuki sensed the oni and tells Yasunori and Shinodamaru that he will put up a barrier and ushered them to go hide in the cart.

Tadayuki recited a spell to summon a shikigami, "The heavenly position is determined, the thunder and wind come together, and the water and fire strike each other. Eight Divinatory Trigrams cross each other. Mistakes are not the same as humanity."

Meanwhile one of the oni said there appears to be humans in the area. The other inquires about them and they started searching.

Yasunori and Shinodamaru noticed that the oni has a corpse that was stolen from the wild and wonder why they have not eaten it yet.

The shikigami Tadayuki summoned happened to be the Kamo Clan's ancestral god, Kamo Taketsunumi/Kamo Takekaku/Yatagarasu the three-legged crow. The oni knew who the shikigami was and were in shocked. Yatagarasu used his three legs to carry Shinodamaru, Yasunori, and Tadayuki to safety.

After Yatagarasu disappeared the oni were still in shock and decided to retreat presumably because they did not want to deal with Yatagarasu.

Tadayuki told Shinodamaru and Yasunori that he did something dangerous and is relieved that the oni are gone. Tadayuki compared Yasunori to a jinroku (compassionate) person to be able to tell him about the Night Parade of Hundred Demons coming, but Yasunori said that it was Shinodamaru who first notice. Tadayuki looked at Shinodamaru in astonishment.

The scene switched to a mysterious unknown figure who is about go to where the Night Parade of Hundred Demons are located. The figure noticed a "human arm" or so it is assumed to be and wondered if one of the oni dropped it and left. The figure said that it was a strange thing for a human arm and laughed and said, "Ok, ok cute. That's right, I'm hungry..."

I will finish summarizing the rest of the chapter when get a chance. The next part I will summarize takes place 19 years later.

I am wondering if this is the Takiyashahime that the title is referring to.

Onmyoji Manga List

Back at it again, this time with all the Onmyoji novels series based manga I'm aware of! You can purchase all of these from Bookwalker without needing to be in Japan as for as I'm aware, but your experience may vary. Note that none have official English translations as of 2023.

Reiko Okano's Onmyoji This series is apparently the manga adaptation for Onmyoji - it won the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Grand Prize (yes, that Osamu Tezuka) in 2001 and the Seiun award (think Japan only Hugo awards) for best comic in 2006. I haven't read much of it unfortunately (I can't afford to buy all the volumes!) It has 13 volumes and a sequel (where you get to see Seimei's son!!!) A few volumes of this manga have been translated in French, but I haven't been able to get my hands on a copy :(

Mitsuki Munku's Takiyashahime A mostly straightforward adaptation of the two-part novel series Takiyashahime. If you can't read the novels, you can read this and get a rough idea of what's going on if you can't read much Japanese (or watch the drama special I mentioned in this post!)

Itou Sei's Takiyashahime aka 瀧夜叉姫　陰陽師絵草子 (Takiyashahime Onmyoji Ezoshi) Okay okay SO THIS MANGA. It adapts Takiyashahime, but puts its own spin on the characters. Seimei is now Haruaki (which is just the kun'yomi reading of 晴明 - Seimei is the on'yomi reading. I could talk about nanori and azana more but that's for a separate post), a young, talented onmyoji who is nonetheless still a mere apprentice. He's a lot more hot-headed and kitsune-like, but also a lot more insecure with being friends with Hiromasa due to his social status. Yasunori also plays a larger role in this as Haruaki's main mentor/shishou instead of senior disciple, probably because the author had a previous manga that involved him as a character (unrelated to the Onmyoji series) I have MANY words about the flavour of Seimei/Hiromasa in this, but it's hard to explain without context!!!

This manga has absolutely GORGEOUS art - beautiful lineart, dynamic panelling, and lovely watercolour splash pages. However, it does not shy away from graphic violence, with multiple instances of animal death, human death (including children) and one instance of graphic sexual assault (which is in volume 3, pages 109-111, if you would like to skip it) It is currently ongoing as of 2023, and you can follow it here.
