LES MIS LETTERS IN ADAPTATION - Preface (Les Miserables - Takahiro Arai)
So long as there shall exist, by virtue of law and custom, decrees of damnation pronounced by society, artificially creating hells amid the civilization of earth, and adding the element of human fate to divine destiny; so long as the three great problems of the century—the degradation of man through pauperism, the corruption of woman through hunger, the crippling of children through lack of light—are unsolved; so long as social asphyxia is possible in any part of the world;—in other words, and with a still wider significance, so long as ignorance and poverty exist on earth, books of the nature of Les Misérables cannot fail to be of use. HAUTEVILLE HOUSE, 1862.

Hello, I am from México and I recently bought the Les Mis manga.
Les Mis is not popular at all in the hispanic or Latinoamerican fandom, so, Idk, I was hoping to find some friends here? I have a lot of hype rn, and I need to talk to someone😭
I love the book, musical, anime, manga, I've seen almost all the movie adaptations, there is even a mexican one! But it's not of my favs.
It would be nice to do art trades or collabs, I have a lot of silly and tragic aus, or if yoy write I love to make fanart about fanfics!👉👈

Okay don't come at me for this but I 100% judge any and all Les Mis adaptations almost completely by their design and characterization of Javert.
Like if he's not on point then I'm sorry, I'm done, I can't.

LES MIS LETTERS IN ADAPTATION - Billows and Shadows, LM 1.2.8 (Les Miserables - Takahiro Arai)
Around him darkness, fog, solitude, the stormy and nonsentient tumult, the undefined curling of those wild waters. In him horror and fatigue. Beneath him the depths. Not a point of support. He thinks of the gloomy adventures of the corpse in the limitless shadow. The bottomless cold paralyzes him. His hands contract convulsively; they close, and grasp nothingness. Winds, clouds, whirlwinds, gusts, useless stars! What is to be done? The desperate man gives up; he is weary, he chooses the alternative of death; he resists not; he lets himself go; he abandons his grip; and then he tosses forevermore in the lugubrious dreary depths of engulfment. Oh, implacable march of human societies! Oh, losses of men and of souls on the way! Ocean into which falls all that the law lets slip! Disastrous absence of help! Oh, moral death! The sea is the inexorable social night into which the penal laws fling their condemned. The sea is the immensity of wretchedness. The soul, going downstream in this gulf, may become a corpse. Who shall resuscitate it?

Okay, this one is definitely one of my favorite parts of the Les Misérables manga (ARAI TAKAHIRO)
Tumblr media
A little context for those who don't remember: at Montparnasse's request, little Gavroche went to the prison and helped some members of Patron Minette escape, as well as his father (M. Thénardier) who had been arrested with them.
With the escape having been successfully completed, Gavroche waits for a few seconds to see if his father will recognize his presence among the others, which of course does not happen because M. Thénardier is horrible both as a person and as a father. Montparnasse notices this and tries to "cheer up" the boy a little by giving him a reward for his help. After that Gavroche leaves.
Tumblr media
And finally, there is Montparnasse asking Thénardier if he had noticed the boy who had brought the rope to him, to which the man responds negatively. And Montparnasse is visibly angry about this.
This man can forgive robberies, schemes, break-ins but not shitty parents, and I find that fascinating and funny ☠️
