LES MIS LETTERS IN ADAPTATION - Preface (Les Miserables - Takahiro Arai)
So long as there shall exist, by virtue of law and custom, decrees of damnation pronounced by society, artificially creating hells amid the civilization of earth, and adding the element of human fate to divine destiny; so long as the three great problems of the century—the degradation of man through pauperism, the corruption of woman through hunger, the crippling of children through lack of light—are unsolved; so long as social asphyxia is possible in any part of the world;—in other words, and with a still wider significance, so long as ignorance and poverty exist on earth, books of the nature of Les Misérables cannot fail to be of use. HAUTEVILLE HOUSE, 1862.

Hello, I am from México and I recently bought the Les Mis manga.
Les Mis is not popular at all in the hispanic or Latinoamerican fandom, so, Idk, I was hoping to find some friends here? I have a lot of hype rn, and I need to talk to someone😭
I love the book, musical, anime, manga, I've seen almost all the movie adaptations, there is even a mexican one! But it's not of my favs.
It would be nice to do art trades or collabs, I have a lot of silly and tragic aus, or if yoy write I love to make fanart about fanfics!👉👈

Okay don't come at me for this but I 100% judge any and all Les Mis adaptations almost completely by their design and characterization of Javert.
Like if he's not on point then I'm sorry, I'm done, I can't.

What are your thoughts on the cirque du freak series?
🕸️
Favorite book/arc?
Favorite characters? Least favorite?
What’s something you wish was expanded on more in the books?
What are your thoughts on a possible cinematic universe with multiple tv shows and movies, live action and animated?
What type of merch would you like to see made available for the cirque du freak fandom?
Just trying to keep the fandom flowing with some conversation, sending this to anyone I come across
YES YES IT’S MY TURN 🥳🥳 Beware of spoilers below for anyone who hasn’t finished the series…
Favourite book/arc: Books 3-9 are easily my favourites, though the series both starts and ends brilliantly too! Those middle books are where we get all the juicy world building, most of my favourite character interactions, and they tend to be the ones I re-read the most. I love the introduction of the vampaneze in book 3, the progressive feeling of dread that builds through books 5 to 6 (I could sense Darren had the wrong idea about Kurda all through the Vampire Prince, but that ending still floored me anyway) and of course, the entire Hunters arc which brought us the era of Peak Steve as well as my favourite pair of fictional brothers 💜💚
Favourite characters: Kurda and Gannen will forever share the #1 spot on this list for me - I can’t really put one above the other. My 14-year-old self loved our kind, calculating and passionate prince-to-be from the moment he appeared in book 4, and I’m not exaggerating when I say Kurda’s fate affected me more than any other fictional character’s, even to this day - I cried non-stop for half an hour after finishing that chapter. Luckily Gannen appeared in the very next book (‘slim, cultured and smooth’? ‘Long hair tied back’? ‘He’d kill himself rather than tell a lie’? HELLOOOO) and all was well again in my teenage heart. My other favourite characters are Steve, Mr Crepsley and Vancha, all of them for having such unique and fun personalities as well as what they gave to the greater story. I don’t really have a least favourite!
Something I wish was expanded on more: Definitely Gannen and Vancha’s relationship. I really wish we saw more of the pain they’re going through during the war by having to be each other’s enemies, and it would have been great to have an epilogue showing what their reconciliation was like, as well as how the other surviving characters were helping them to create peace between the clans.
Thoughts on a Shan-C-U: I’d love to see an anime! The manga adapted the books very faithfully, yet with enough subtle changes to make me enjoy the story even more (Darren and Debbie’s characters are given some extra depth, to name a few). It would be great to see all of that explored in further detail on screen, including the many brilliant little moments from the books that couldn’t fit into the manga. Also Takahiro Arai made all my favourite characters look amazing so seeing those designs come to life would be great.
CDF merch I’d like to see: I’d swap my left kidney for a pair of Gavner-inspired girl boxers, a Cirque poster, and a life-size Harkat plushie.
@the-stars-sigh-when-i-get-high thank you so much for your thought-provoking questions and sorry for the essay they spawned!

LES MIS LETTERS IN ADAPTATION - Billows and Shadows, LM 1.2.8 (Les Miserables - Takahiro Arai)
Around him darkness, fog, solitude, the stormy and nonsentient tumult, the undefined curling of those wild waters. In him horror and fatigue. Beneath him the depths. Not a point of support. He thinks of the gloomy adventures of the corpse in the limitless shadow. The bottomless cold paralyzes him. His hands contract convulsively; they close, and grasp nothingness. Winds, clouds, whirlwinds, gusts, useless stars! What is to be done? The desperate man gives up; he is weary, he chooses the alternative of death; he resists not; he lets himself go; he abandons his grip; and then he tosses forevermore in the lugubrious dreary depths of engulfment. Oh, implacable march of human societies! Oh, losses of men and of souls on the way! Ocean into which falls all that the law lets slip! Disastrous absence of help! Oh, moral death! The sea is the inexorable social night into which the penal laws fling their condemned. The sea is the immensity of wretchedness. The soul, going downstream in this gulf, may become a corpse. Who shall resuscitate it?
