I mentioned in this post that I thought it would take a life or death choice about Imogen for Liliana to flip, situationally, as opposed to the party being able to convince her to change her ideology (cult juice is strong), and it seems we may have gotten an element of that in Liliana flying to Imogen's aid against Otohan. I'd be very curious what Liliana would have done if she'd gotten there in time to fight, but we'll never know, so we have to digest the moment we got. I also think FCG's death adds another dimension both in-game and above the table. Since we dropped out literally mid-scene after her arrival this post may get stale immediately after the first few minutes of next week's episode, but for now I think it's safe to say that at least for the time Liliana spends with the party right now she will not be an active antagonist. Her daughter called for help and she answered, and her first act was trying to comfort her. Matt also wouldn't hit the players with another big battle fresh off the first (and with that outcome), so if they do have to face Liliana as an enemy it would be later under evolved circumstances.
To be clear I don't think FCG dying means Matt nerfs the threat of Liliana or that this situation means she has flipped permanently, but rather, it neatly interrupts the established dynamic between Liliana and Imogen thus far and creates a chance for new dialogue that doesn't just repeat all the same things as before. Imogen hasn't needed her mother - not really - and maybe still doesn't, but she called for help and is grieving now and the conversation doesn't necessarily have to be the same old "Liliana renounce your cause" but rather "help your daughter here and now" and to connect with her through that emotion. This is probably the best opportunity they'll ever get to flip Liliana in a more than "last ditch in a crisis moment" kind of way or lay the groundwork for that happening later. Now, the party - and Imogen in particular - may rightly be angry with Liliana as an ally of Otohan, and that FCG died because of the cause Liliana supports. Liliana may want to comfort her daughter while also believing that FCG's death was unfortunate but not ultimately a reason to doubt the cause or escape what she sees as inevitable. It's messy! But it's a very interesting situation and FCG's death is such a visible wound on Imogen that it may elicit Liliana to do or consider things she wouldn't, otherwise.
#As evidenced by her convos with Imogen earlier Liliana often thinks of the cause as a way to help Imogen (get rid of powers)#or that be following through that will protect her (prevent her from becoming the Vessel)#and so it's not a strong enough tactic to say “abandon the cause to protect your daughter”#it takes a more immediate tangible threat to effectively pit the “the cause” vs “imogen's safety” against each other#we can (and should) critique the way Liliana's love for Imogen is very flawed and a bit of a time capsule still seeing her as a child etc#but it IS there in its way and may have its role to play in all of this#critical role#cr spoilers#op#c3#c3e91#liliana temult#imogen

“steve uses the harrington charm” this, “steve uses all his typical flirting playbook moves” that, give me a steve who assumes that since he’s crushing on eddie, who’s a guy, he has to use moves that girls usually use on guys in order to get eddie to recognize that he’s flirting.
give me steve thinking that since eddie isn’t a girl, all the usual flirting he does won’t work, so he assumes he should use the moves girls he’s dated have used on him instead. give me steve tilting his head and batting his eyelashes and asking a very perplexed eddie to explain something about cars or sports since “guys are just so smart about this stuff.” give me steve playing up being cold until eddie gives him his jacket, give me steve feeling up eddie’s biceps and going “wow, you must work out a lot. oh, you don’t? could’ve fooled me, your muscles are, like, so big.” give me eddie being so bewildered because steve keeps laughing at jokes that probably aren’t as funny as he’s making them out to be, or eddie being perplexed by steve twirling his hair or smiling coyly while trailing his fingers over the tattoo on eddie’s forearm.
just steve absolutely laying on the moves, but they’re not his usual moves. robin is incredibly amused and has resigned herself to eventually explaining that the gender of the person steve’s flirting with doesn’t necessarily have to change his approach (only once the comedy of the situation dies down, of course). eddie is utterly bewildered, because other than this, steve is acting totally normal.
#eddie being particularly baffled about the cars and sports comment#that’s the one tactic that backfires on steve#because eddie immediately turns around and goes “didn’t you play that????”#“steve “he’s a guy so i have to be the girl” harrington#robin “that’s not how being gay works” buckley#eddie “what the fuck is happening” munson#just absolute shenanigans because it’s the 80s and gender roles are so Heavily Ingrained into the politics of dating#stranger things#eddie munson#steve harrington#steddie#steve x eddie#robin buckley

Macbeth, William Shakespeare / Henry IV , William Shakespeare Collateral (2004) dir. Michael Mann
On the homophone pair ‘deer’ and ‘dear’ in Shakespeare’s works, the line in Macbeth denotes those that were dear to someone. Also seen in Henry IV.
In Collateral the function the usage of homophones assumes is adapted when Max makes out the bloodied windshield from the hit to be the blood of a deer; the original meaning being extracted just before with Vincent – in a similar vein – noting about his quarry, “they’re somebody’s friends…”
In addition, prior to the cops pulling them over, Vincent muses: “Probably married. Maybe that one's got kids. Probably his wife's pregnant…” assessing the potential familial relations of the (“deer”) persons he threatens will be added to the quarry of murdered “deer” ones filling the trunk space.
#because death hath not struck so fat a deer to-day though many dearer in this bloody fray.#there's also something to be said of him filling Max’ head with faceless loved ones humanising them as a tactic to urge him#(continued) to act accordingly seemingly remaining indifferent to the role he plays#collateral 2004#michael mann#mindhunter (1986) had me hooked on micheal mann movies i really lost it over that one and now i'm here#i’ve gone nuts ignore this take I’m not a humanitarian#there are many more parallels to be drawn and literary comparisons that can be made#yes that one line about lady macbeth sparked this and that's because intertextuality is fun#that's why webweaving (?) is so prevalent on this site#itu bad takes

Pixel art for today based on videogame Indora no Hikari for game console Nes. As I can see it is role playing game.
And this is my drawing about the same theme. I can to remember a tactic role playing game Shining Force for Sega 16 bit. I can suggest drawing about tactics.
You are young ranger. You are living in a village Karila. All of your life you are dreaming about a big adventure and to see a red and blue dragons. Your friend swordsman Rog is very interesting in adventures. He is very interesting about explore mystical lands Argnalaksa. It is a land of necromancers and ghosts. Prince has come to your place and ask you to take him into adventure. He can do a healing and use a short dagger. Thing is next, that king do not let him to go into adventure. And he dreams about adventures.
And it is everywhere a kings defenders knights. They will not fight with you but they will try to stun you. And to return prince to castle. King get to know about prince and try to find him. And he comes to you. And speaks. Let’s go to adventure. Help to avoid kings knights. As soon as we left city walls. He gives you a map of a kingdom. Behind a castle walls – there are forest people, friends Bu and Du. And they are training all the time with little axes, to throw them. And they can do a useful potions. And friend, girl with name Ju Ju can do a spells. Green magic. Very rare thing.
With such a team you can expect a big success. That’s for sure you will see dragons and necromants. Weather is nice. And it is feeling you need to go.

I think… I need new RPG to play
IDK what’s wrong w/ me lately, but I’ve been so uninterested and burnt out on a lot of the RPG franchises I usually obsess about ( Fire Emblem, Xenoblade, Persona/SMT, Octopath Traveler, Pokemon, Megaman Battle Network, among others ), but I’ve been trying to play them and I’m just so uninvested in them lately. It feels like nothing new that I’m interested in has come out lately, and I could really use a fresh new RPG title.
And I don’t mean just any title. I need something I can just chew the hell out of. Something I can go absolutely feral for. Not just any cookie-cutter fantasy plot, but characters, stories, and gameplay that will have me frothing at the mouth as I play.
Y’all got any suggestions? Particularly any for the Switch?
I generally mostly enjoy turn-based RPG’s. I’m not opposed to real-time action ( like Nier: Automata ) or a hybrid ( Xenoblade ), but I really prefer turn-based RPG’s. Tactical RPG’s are good too ( Fire Emblem, Valkyria Chronicles, Shining Force ).

Today I'm Gonna Play: Lost Dimension
I saw a video by The Gaming Shelf on hidden gems and this title popped up. I love the death/survival game genre like Zero Escape, Danganronpa, Your Turn To Die, etc. so this was right up my alley.
The game introduces a cast of about 11 characters working a part of a government task force who have special abilities called Gifts, ranging from magnetism to pyrokinises to support based abilities like healing who are stuck in a tower forced to climb up as part of a death game. However, for each section of the tower you climb up, you're forced to go through the death game segment called ''Judgement'', in which you find out there is a traitor within the group each time, and vote them out to be executed. The protagonist in particular, has the ability to predict the future, and therefore has the ability to find out who the traitor is. The main goal is to ensure that people vote for the traitor in order to suceed. This is by developing relationships with the other characters.
In concept, a lot of this sounds very exciting, and there are some interesting executions. Death games normally have a set ''culprit'' to execute decided by the author, but this game has it randomized. Yup! Every time you start a new game, the traitors will always be different, so you have to be careful with who you decide to vote out! How does this affect the overall gameplay? The relationship system allows you to interact with your comrades, getting to know them more and earning their affinity. This helps you influence votes. The other feature of finding traitors is the Vision system, which shows a prediction chart of who's likely to be the traitor while also playing a minigame sequence. The game isn't just about deducting traitors in visual novel style (as usual for this genre), but also incorporates a tactical RPG component as well. Each member has special abilities and range of movement, and if they die, the rest can inherit their abilities. This aspect was my favourite, trying out different combinations and abilities, as well as having back attacks and multiple assists in the same range. It also gave me the opportunity to be more emotionally attached to characters I found useful, hoping they wouldn't be the traitor.
However, the game is not without its faults. The plot is interesting but dialogue falls flat. Characters are mostly trope-y, so it was hard to get too invested in them. The minigame sequence in the vision system is veeery boring as it's the literal definition of being a walking simulator. I don't think people would complain about games like Life Is Strange or Firewatch being that if they saw this. But thankfully the sequence is short. Character designs are okay but nothing to write home about, and the music is alright, bearable enough to stay in my head as an earworm after a session but in a good way. I also don't want to spoil this aspect so I will be vague, the game's plot doesn't seem to follow itself properly despite emphasizing it so much.
Overall, I think it's a game worth trying for its randomized feature and TRPG element. I do hope a successor of sorts comes out of this because it definitely holds some potential.

The Art of Decision-Making
Tactics Ogre is a game that first released in 1995. It saw a re-release on the PlayStation Portable (PSP) with a revamped title: Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together before emerging once more to grace our consoles as Tactics Ogre Reborn. And as a fan of the Final Fantasy Tactics game, who also thoroughly enjoyed her time with Triangle Strategy, trying out the original inspiration behind these two games was a no-brainer. After all, strategy/ tactical role-playing games have always been able to present the conflicts of war in a both complex and engaging manner, especially when they allow for personal choices to influence the trajectory of where the story may go.
Of course, given this is a role-playing game from Japan, a supernatural element must be inserted. Along with a late-game reveal of the true antagonist. In Tactics Ogre, I was pulled a little from my enjoyment of the story when the initial focus was resolved and the final boss ended up being with a literal demon incarnation of the previous king.
True, they had sprinkled in some of King Dorgulua’s backstory with Catiua’s reveal but the war between the Gods and the Ogres (whilst present in the opening credits) was mentioned little throughout the game, what with its focus on the repercussions on war. So, the entire exposition with Dark Knights Barbas and Martym felt a little hamfisted in its attempt to introduce the big bad at the end of the game.
In a way, it also dismissed a lot of the earlier turmoil that took up the bulk of the game was insignificant as a God emerged from the depths to rule over the world. Especially as, even though you can have Catiua in your party, her relationship with King Dorgulua is never touched upon during that final battle.
Beyond these little titbits, as well as a few well-worn tropes of disguised royalty, I did still thoroughly enjoy the initial set-up of the game with Denam, Catiua and Vyce rebelling against Galgastan oppression on the Walisters. The internal fighting among the rebellion, the moral dilemma of whether or not to kill your own to drag unwilling participants into war and the underhanded tactics to install a ruler over the land of Valeria was a sight to behold.
In fact, it would have been the preference of this humble blogger if things had remained there with King Dorgulua’s name fading into the annals of history. Or if there had been renewed focus on the nations of Lodis or New Xenobia and what their stakes were when it came to meddling with Valerian affairs.
Given that the game came out back in 1995, though, it’s understandable for why the developers decided to go down the route they chose. Despite the questionable choice of ending boss battle, the game still holds up even today. I would have liked some additional context with the other Ogre Battles and the history of the world I found myself in (this entry being the seventh episode) but I was still able to follow along in terms of the general motivations of the core characters as well as the villains.
This was especially astounding when it came to the choices that Denam had to choose in key beats of the plot. The variations of choice, even dialogue options, had ramification for the ending. Not to mention the Chaos Frame mechanic that was hidden behind it all and could have led to other distasteful outcomes for our main protagonist.
The gameplay for Tactics Ogre is very similar to Final Fantasy Tactics. It includes hiring or recruiting generic fighters to the cause and using them in battle. Of course, there are also unique characters with their own special sprites. But in terms of the actual flow of battle, the unique characters added little. Although, some had special classes that added a little flavour to battles. It should be noted that for every major battle, only Denam, had to feature in them all. The other playable characters could be interchanged with little repercussions. Or dismissed if the need arose.
Just like Final Fantasy Tactics, the game featured an overworld map and when a battle was entered, it would zoom onto a particular map with a grid overlay. Characters can move, use skills and perform one action. The action could range from using spells, items or actually attacking another character. The key to Tactics Ogre’s battle system is not unlike the weapon triangle of Fire Emblem. However, it is switched to six elements. Those being fire, water, lightning, earth, air and ice.
There is also an unspoken counter system with mages being better placed to counter buffed frontline attackers, mages being vulnerable to ranged attacks from archers, and units with higher defence taking minimal damage from ranged weaponry. Something I only gradually picked up on later as I favoured charging in and trying to destroy everything as quickly as possible.
Mana, like Triangle Strategy, is a limited but rechargeable pool that is empty at the start of battle. This differs from Final Fantasy Tactics, which allowed mages to immediately start raining hellfire onto their foes from the very beginning. It allowed for more tactical positioning as I awaited for enough mana to unleash what spells I had equipped my magic users. Mana was also important for non-magic users too as they were key to using finishing moves that could deal out a ton of damage.
As such, there was a good strong focus on buffing up the magic reserves for all characters. The only downside to this, of course, was how few and far between such mana replenishing items were as they did not appear to be sold at shops and had to be found as drops from enemies or occasionally scrounged up from certain tiles on battle maps.
One important thing I noted when playing Tactics Ogre Reborn was the fact that items, spells and skills were limited. One could not deck out their favourite warriors with 99x of all items. Rather, they could equip four of each. This meant that item usage, spells and skills had to be considered for each encounter. While this led to a few annoying battles where I struggled against certain units (of note, beasts), it did add another layer of strategic thinking to an otherwise excellent game known for the tactics needed.
Especially as there was a level cap for my characters!
I was utterly devastated to learn that I could not simply overlevel all my characters to decimate the opposition. Rather, my characters were all limited by the ‘Union Level.’ This allowed battles to be even-playing fields and I couldn’t take advantage of better stats to stack the battlefield. A shame, I know, but I made up for it by exploiting crafting and ensuring that my army was well-armed and well-equipped for each battle I went into. If I hadn’t used the exploit and had played it as it was intended, I would have, no doubt, struggled a little more with the game with fewer resources at my disposal and having to better pick and choose the units I took into each battle.
Of course, such things could be counteracted by picking up buff cards that could allow me to deal more damage than my unit might have usually been able to deal out against a particular enemy. It was especially useful against the final boss.
Overall, I enjoyed my time with Tactics Ogre Reborn. While I would have preferred being able to overlevel my units so I didn’t have to fear losing against difficult bosses, it allowed me to think differently on how I engaged with tactical role-playing games. There was even some joy in it when it came to repurposing my units and swapping out abilities and spells when required to deal with a particular annoying foe that favoured certain status effects such as petrification or fear.
Most of all, what I loved most of Tactics Ogre Reborn was the world-building and the hidden layers within. Perhaps one of these days, I could find a way to play the other Ogre Battle games but for now, I am still quite satisfied with the complex world that was crafted to explore what it means to rebel against oppression and to dream of a fairer and better world.
