always willing to provide mlt reqs 🫡🫡 let’s have number 7&8 off the dialogues?
a/n: thats why i love you😌
"Couldn't you wait to kiss me at home?"
"Please, I don't want the rain getting both of us sick. I volunteer to be tribute--take my jacket."
you welcome maya back home from australia with a big sign, balloons, and flowers.
she flushes bright red, and quickly takes the sign from your hands. still- she wraps you up in a tight hug, face smushed up against you neck.
"hi."
"hi."
its quiet between you- the airport bustling around you as people reunite, and bid farewells.
but all you can focus on is maya- your girl.
you still hold onto her hands, rubbing your thumb softly over them.
you speak softly to her in the loud airport.
"i really did miss you, the bed was cold without you."
"my poor girl."
maya fakes concern and you narrow your eyes at her.
"you going to do anything about that superstar? what? you leave for australia and it's like you've forgotten me."
you fake hurt- and scream when maya picks you up.
"you know i'm kidding."
-
"i have to say i did not miss this weather."
maya comments from across the table- your sat for dinner and she's holding you hand across the table.
"yeah?"
"mmh, you'd love it there- i'll take you some day."
"wow- i'm really living that wag life now huh? you paying for dinner too?"
"was thinking of doing a runner actually- i could get away."
"and leave me behind? wow."
she laughs- and you take a second to admire her, you really have missed her so, so much. she throws her head back, and drops your hand to slap the table.
-
she does end up paying- or, at least thats what you hope she's doing.
you're waiting for her in the foyer of the restaurant and watch the rain come down.
when she comes back out, she's acting funny and you narrow your eyes at her.
"wow look at the rain- here babe, please, I don't want the rain getting both of us sick. I volunteer to be tribute--take my jacket."
you grab hold of it- eyes still narrowed.
"all paid?"
you question.
maya looks to the side before booking it out into the rain.
"hey!"
you run after her, eventually catching up to where she's stopped in the middle of the street, smiling at you like a maniac.
you go to hit her arm softly- but she catches your fist, bring it down to you side. her hands cup your cheeks and she kisses you- right there, in the middle of the rain, in the middle of the street.
when she finally pulls away, you notice how you're both soaked.
"couldn't you wait to kiss me at home?"
she shakes her head no.

‘Nother table runner with dolphins this time.
The long arm quilting pattern was called Sea Scapes and has pebbles, bubbles, and waves. I’ve been wanting to use it for a while and this table runner was the perfect test run.
Gotta take the basting out and then I can trim and bind it and it’ll be ready to go to Australia.

Meet the Demigods: Layla Anda
Good evening, campers. Sephora, live from Cabin Two! Today on 'Meet the Demigods' we have the head of the camp market, the queen of all things commerce, and the most well-traveled demigod, Layla Anda from the Hermes cabin!
Q1: How would you describe how you look?
"I'm sixteen, I'm about five foot five. My hair reaches down to about my hips, but I always have it tied back so it doesn't get in the way. I'm very athletic, so I'm pretty lean and slender. I have hazel eyes, and my skin is a warm, orangey-red tan, especially from being outside ALL the time!"
Q2: Where have you traveled to?
"I've been all over the US, Canada, and Mexico. I speak seven languages, and as a kid of Hermes, I can understand any language spoken or written! I've also traveled to Australia, China, South Korea, New Zealand, Puerto Rico, and places like that! I still think my favorite place is my birthplace- Arizona! It's just so vast, and beautiful!"
Q3: What kind of skills do you have, as a demigod?
"I feel like I fit more into the niche of the 'God of Travelers' thing my dad's got going on. I'm able to teleport short distances- about two hundred feet at most. I also can just naturally tell how far we are from the closest town or civilization, and I can read any form of navigational tool! I can read and understand every language in the world, I have a talent for understanding the worth of something in every currency in the world, and I and one of the fastest runners in camp! Thanks, dad! You're the best!"
Q4: If you could have any power of any demigod in camp, what would it be?
"Reagan has this ability to just... Control ships. That's cool, but I think I'd have to go with the Hephaestus kids' ability to control and understand every mechanical thing, like cars, trucks, planes, stuff like that! I would be an unstoppable traveler!"
Q5: What is your favorite animal?
"I absolutely adore snakes, but that's just a Hermes thing. So, if I had to pick for myself, I'd probably say foxes! They're smart, agile, and they probably carry so much knowledge with them!"
Q6: When you graduate, what do you want to study at college?
"Good question! Oh, man, I think I'll study something like business, and open my own shop. I have so many ideas that could help people out. I can only hope Finn from the Hephaestus cabin helps out. His handiwork would be SO helpful!"
Q7: What are your thoughts on Atalanta and Ganymede being the camp directors?
"They're doing great! The camp has never felt so positive, and the past year of them doing this has been something incredible! Morale is so high, there's been a record low of attacks, and they're both extremely skilled with teaching us! Atalanta is the guardian of young women, after all- and Ganymede is the guardian of young men! They deserve a raise, you hear me?!"
Q8: Okay, so which cabin would you like to live in if you didn't live in the Hermes cabin?
"Oh, if I can't pick Hermes already, then my number two choice would probably be the Nike cabin! Rumor has it they have a ping pong table, a pool table, and a Foosball table in the cabin- and they have that basketball court on the outside! I also light how bright it looks on the outside, and the Nike kids are so cool to hang with!"

Multituberculate Earth: Paleocene
Tumblr media
This where the timeline diverges.
The first five million years of the Paleocene occur as in our timeline. After a slow recovery multituberculates explode in diversity, dominating the mammal faunas of the north hemisphere. Meanwhile, in the southern continents, gondwanatheres and dryolestoids do the same. Therians radiate in the background, placentals in particularly producing a myriad of forms.
But while in our timeline multituberculates rapidly decline at the end of the Danian (circa 61 million years) and therians take hold, this doesn’t happen here. Instead, multituberculates continue their trajectory as dominant land mammals, while therians decline in their stead. Whatever caused the decline of multituberculates in our timeline doesn’t affect them here; it instead cuts the branches of the therian family tree, and by the end their brief period of exploration comes to an end.
The climate is temperate, warming as the era goes on. Flowering plants dominate the scene, but not as much as in our world, there being also a wealth of conifers, ferns, horsetails and ginkgos among others (this could explain why multituberculates have not declined, but fails to explain why therians did…) In these conditions various groups have prospered in the post-Cretaceous world, including the sole surviving dinosaurs, birds, as well as crocodylomorphs, turtles, amphibians and the mysterious choristodere reptiles. Squamates aside from snakes were strongly impacted by the KT event, and it took them over ten million years to recover in our timeline; this recovery does not happen here, making them join therians on the path to damnation.
In the north hemisphere, cimolodont multituberculates are the dominant mammals. Kogaionids make a brief tour throught Europe, but increasing competition from recently-arrived North American and Asian clades force them back to the isolation of Balkanatolia. Taeniolabidoids dominate herbivorous guilds, taeniolabidids as large sized herbivores across the northern continents and lambdopsalids as a myriad of digging, running and even hopping forms in Asia. Ptilodontoideans diversify across the canopies, and go on to produce the first largest multituberculate carnivores. Microcosmodontids remain largely small sized insectivores, but already vie for large sized predatory roles in some environments. Meniscoessids, inversely, occupy herbivorous roles and don’t diversify as much. Djadochtatheroideans, which evolved in Asia’s desert environments during the Cretaceous, have a hard time ajdusting to a greener world, but still succeed as the mostly predatory eucosmodontids and herbivorous boffiids.
In the trifecta of South America, Antarctica and Australia, gondwanatheres and dryolestoids continue the reign they enjoyed in the Cretaceous. The former are mostly herbivorous, while the latter fulfill all manner of roles from sengi-like runners to large carnivores to long-necked leaf-eaters that earn the title of largest land animal… for now at least. Curiously, some northern mammal groups penetrate into South America from North America much as in our world, but unlike our timeline marsupials are not the ones leaving a lasting legacy. And unlike our timeline, ferugliotheriid gondwanatheres invade the north successfully.
Africa stands as an isolated oddity. Here, a sole lineage of gondwanatheres, the galulatheriids, dominate herbivorous niches, while kogaionids diversify as carnivores and insectivores; whereas the latter have been here all along since the Cretaceous or are recent immigrants from Europe and/or Balkanatolia is unknown. Also weird are Madagascar and India, two isolated landmasses bearing a similar gondwanathere/kogaionid fauna, though the former are composed of sudamericids and adalatheriids instead. India is marching northwards at great speeds, and soon contact between the two faunas will begin…

Gonna just chime in and add - a lot of traits that are associated with Autism and ADHD are actually 'normal'. The difference here between it just being part of the human experience and actually Autism/ADHD is frequency and/or sensitivity, or even the severity.
For example, in the case of Autism - anyone can experience sensory overload/overwhelm. The mechanism is the same and just goes with 'you have a brain'. You've gotta remember brains are actually sitting in a dark room, all the time interpreting data from the sensors wired into your body (eyes, ears, sense of touch etc.). You bombard those sensors with enough information, they will get overloaded. If you think I'm talking shit as a neurotypical - think shopping centers/malls during Christmas shopping period. Heaps of people, voices echoing off tiles, Christmas music constantly blaring from every corner playing a different song out every door, kids screaming and crying, smells of food and perfume mixing together (idk they always have pop up stalls here in Australia right in the thoroughfares) people jostling your elbows, if you're where I am add 'probably sweaty af because of the heat outside before you came in'.
Anyone would feel absolutely wiped having to deal with that for a few hours straight. That is sensory overload.
The difference between a neurotypical (normal neurology) and someone with Autism is our sensitivity is jacked up way too high. There's various theories as to why, I think the current? front-runner is it's reduced synaptic pruning - basically meaning Autistic's possibly retain more synaptic connections from infancy than others. To put it into an analogy, imagine you have a 'volume' knob for your senses. Yours is sitting (as a neurotypical) at a nice level that you can manage in daily life. The Autistic person however, has it turned up to maximum volume - double your own experience. Suddenly it becomes clear how something that would normally be overwhelming for one person can trigger a complete meltdown in their neurological system resulting in either a meltdown, shutdown or total disassociation from the body in the brain's attempt to mitigate harm. Also given Autism is considered a spectrum, everyone's volume knobs are set a bit different. Some might be really strong for some things, but not others and that'll vary from person to person.
Now for an ADHD example - yes, we all forget things. Everyone has probably experienced the phenomenon known as the 'Doorway Effect' whereby entering a room to go get something - you've suddenly forgot why you're there. And then have to go retrace your steps back to the previous room to 'remember' it, as if you left your brain behind when you changed rooms.
The theory around this is due how to the brain encodes memory, and this might mean a few things get chucked out by accident when you change rooms because your brain is, unawares to you, having to change gear the moment you cross that threshold as it 'processes' the different room. Your brain is relating the memory of what you needed to get before in time and space so it can tell what has passed, what is present etc. (if your brain didn't do this, you'd have a detached sense of time which is a major component of Schizophrenia) This also explains why going BACK to the room can bring back the memory. Your brain just dropped it on the way out.
But for someone with ADHD, if you're doing this so often to the point you feel like you lack object permanence or you feel like unless you can see it constantly, your brain will probably forget it exists? That's ADHD. An ADHD brain has problems with binding dopamine receptors which help us stay motivated and attentive. It's a bit like your short term memory is like a table in front of you where you line up all the things you're supposed to currently be 'remembering' but the ADHD component is the cat that's constantly prowling the table and smacking off things that don't generate enough dopamine. So the memories often end up on the floor and now it's been the fourth week in a row you forgot to put the bin out (me, btw 💀).
This of course, can happen to 'normal' people too - we are running virtually the same hardware. But the differences I am describing here are what we consider disordered.
This is what I think a lot of people forget when accusations of self-diagnosis/statements like 'everyone's a bit x' are thrown around. We're forgetting it's in the name, Autism Specrtum Disorder, Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. The defining characteristic of all of these 'symptoms' that get talked about, is they are at a disordered level that is interrupting day to day life and/or making it unable for someone to function as well in our societal structure (this is your hint to go look up the Social Model of disability btw).
So yes, everyone forgets things. Everyone can feel overwhelmed by music that's too loud etc. The difference is this - take whatever that thing is that annoys you, now double it. Now it's a problem. It's disordered.
So yeah, next time someone tries to tell you you're maybe making shit up or you're seeing a lot of people on what I'd arguably call the Autism webbed site (there is a BIG correlation between neurodivergence and fandom btw) going 'oh me too?' maybe it's not a good sample size and if you've got the feeling something about you is off - do your research (from reputable sources, and no an Autistic person cannot be a perfect source because it affects everyone differently) and talk to your doctor.
Also P.S. self-diagnosis if you consider yourself adequately informed and find it useful and/or supported by a medical practitioner like your doctor or psychologist but cannot legally diagnose you - IS. VALID.
Costs - especially for adults - to get diagnosis are often prohibitive, and considering most studies confirm if you're Autistic you're more likely to be unemployed in the first place it's a massive catch 22. My diagnosis' cost me about 4-5k AUD in total. I did not pay for it, my parents did - and I know not everyone will get access to that.
So be kind people. And talk to your doc pls.
(P.S.S. No this isn't to rail on OP or anything this is just a thing I've been thinking about and think needs clearing up for a lot of peeps. We're forgetting what 'disorder' is. Talk to a health professional if you can. Do your research too.)
Edit: I realised I goofed and repeated myself, that's fixed also changed the link for the synaptic pruning to a better one. Shit happens when it's due more ADHD meds o'clock lol.
Pro tip if you see at least 50 people say "wait that's not normal??" In the comments of some neurodivergent relatability post then it probably is, in fact, normal. Daydreaming to songs is normal, I promise you. Most everything about being neurodivergent is normal, it's just the degree to which it affects you and your life that makes it abnormal.

How To Style Your Messmate Dining Table For Every Occasion?
The messmate dining table is more than just a functional piece of furniture; it serves as the heart of your home, bringing family and friends together for meals and celebrations. Styling your table appropriately for different occasions can enhance the dining experience and create lasting memories.
This guide explores several professional yet creative approaches to elevate your messmate dining table for any event.
1. Embrace Seasonal Decor
Adapting your table decor to the changing seasons can refresh your dining area and add relevance to your gatherings.
Spring: To reflect the freshness of spring, consider incorporating vibrant floral arrangements. A simple vase filled with seasonal blooms can brighten your table. Complement this with pastel-coloured tableware and light linens to create an airy and welcoming environment.
Summer: A casual picnic theme works wonderfully for summer events. Use a colourful table runner and incorporate natural elements like wooden serving boards and fresh fruit to evoke a relaxed, outdoor vibe.
Autumn: Autumn calls for rich, warm tones. A deep orange or burgundy tablecloth can set the scene, while centrepieces of mini pumpkins, pinecones, and flickering candles add a cozy touch.
Winter: For the holiday season, elegant metallic accents can enhance the festive atmosphere. Utilise gold or silver candle holders alongside a dark tablecloth. Incorporate evergreen sprigs or a sophisticated centrepiece to reflect the season's spirit.
2. Mix and Match Styles
The inherent versatility of the best messmate dining table in Australia allows for creative combinations of different styles.
Eclectic Appeal: Combining vintage and modern elements can create an inviting atmosphere. Pair contemporary dishes with antique tableware or mismatched chairs to create a unique aesthetic that encourages storytelling.
Minimalist Elegance: For those who prefer a streamlined look, simplicity is key. Opt for neutral-coloured dishes and limit the number of centrepieces to one or two impactful pieces, such as a sculptural vase or a minimalist candle holder.
Tumblr media
3. Establish a Theme
Selecting a theme can significantly enhance the overall ambience of your messmate dining table.
Cuisine-Inspired: For a themed dinner, consider setting your table according to the cuisine served. For an Italian night, use a red and white checkered tablecloth, rustic wooden dishes, and a carafe of wine. Conversely, a Mexican fiesta can be captured through vibrant colours, traditional ceramics, and festive decorations.
Movie Night: For a relaxed evening, create a movie-themed dining experience. Use popcorn buckets as centrepieces and scatter-related props across the table. Cozy up the setting with thematic snacks that enhance the film experience.
4. Consider Lighting
Lighting plays a critical role in the ambience of your messmate dining table.
Candles: Incorporate candles of varying heights to create a warm and inviting glow. Using glass holders or lanterns can enhance the atmosphere and provide a sophisticated touch.
Natural Light: If dining during daylight hours, position your table to use natural light. Opening curtains to let in sunlight can be the best decoration, enhancing the overall dining experience.
5. Personal Touches
Consider incorporating individual elements to make your messmate dining table truly reflective of your style.
Family Heirlooms: Displaying family photos or cherished collectibles can add warmth and provoke conversation among guests, enriching the dining experience.
Customised Place Settings: Personal touches such as handwritten notes or name cards can make guests feel appreciated and welcomed, contributing to a memorable gathering.
Conclusion
Your messmate dining table serves as a gathering place for family and friends, making it essential to style it thoughtfully for various occasions. By embracing seasonal decor, mixing styles, establishing themes, considering lighting, and adding personal touches, you can create an inviting and memorable dining experience. Elevate your messmate dining table and enjoy the beauty of shared moments with your loved ones.

AFC World Cup Qualifiers recap: Round 3
Australia 3:1 China PR
Tumblr media
Following a recent managerial change, the Socceroos have returned to winning form. Under Tony Popovic’s leadership, the team entered the match as clear favourites despite their recent challenges. Although they conceded an early goal against the run of play, Australia maintained their pressure and secured a 3-1 victory over the Red Dragons. This result provides much-needed relief and lifts them to second place in the standings, with four points from three matches. Goal scorers for Australia: Lewis Miller, Craig Goodwin, Nishan Velupillay Goal scorer for China PR: Wenneng Xie
Jordan 0:2 South Korea
Tumblr media
The Asian Cup runners-up faced a setback in their latest World Cup qualifier, falling to the Taeguk Warriors. South Korea dominated the match, maintaining control of possession and limiting Jordan’s opportunities to hold onto the ball. Despite having just 25% possession, Jordan managed to take more shots (13) than their opponents (12). However, their efforts fell short as they succumbed to a 2-0 defeat against the clearly superior South Korean side. With this victory, South Korea solidified their position as table toppers, while Jordan remains in 3rd place. Goal scorers for Korea Republic: Young-woo Seol, Hyun-gyu Oh
Uzbekistan 0:0 IR Iran
Tumblr media
Team Melli played to a draw against the White Wolves of Central Asia, with both sides proving evenly matched—each recording 10 shots throughout the game. Despite their parity in statistics, Team Melli showed greater attacking intent and might have secured all three points if not for the heroics of Utkir Yusupov, Uzbekistan’s goalkeeper, who made four crucial saves. In contrast, Uzbekistan struggled in front of goal, managing only one shot on target. Due credit must be given to Team Melli for maintaining the scoreline after being reduced to 10 men in the 57th minute, following Saleh Hardani's dismissal by the referee. Their resilience and determination in the face of adversity played a crucial role in securing the draw against a competitive opponent. Following this match, both teams remain level with 7 points each, but Uzbekistan holds the top spot in the standings due to a superior goal difference.
Bahrain 2:2 Indonesia
Tumblr media
The Red Devils of Asia played to a draw against Team Garuda on October 10, 2024. Talajic's side showcased their dynamic attacking style, keeping Indonesia on the defensive for much of the match. Their efforts paid off early, with Mohamed Jasim Marhoom netting a stunning long-range goal in the first half, shaking Team Garuda. However, Indonesia quickly responded just before halftime, with Ragnar Oratmangoen levelling the score. The match remained tightly contested, and although Indonesia came close to victory, Marhoom struck again in the final minutes to equalize, neutralizing the lead that had been established by Rafael Struick. This result marks Indonesia's third consecutive draw, leaving them still in search of their first win, while Bahrain holds 4th place with 4 points. Goal scorer for Bahrain: Mohamen J Marhoom Goal scorers for Indonesia: Ragnar Oratmangoen, Rafael Struick
Oman 4:0 Kuwait
Tumblr media

From the outset, Oman took control of the match, consistently pressing forward while Kuwait's defence struggled to keep up. Oman registered 17 shots compared to Kuwait's 8, highlighting their offensive superiority. Abdulrahman Al Mushaifri earned the Man of the Match award with a well-deserved brace. This much-needed win propels Oman to 4th place in the standings, while Kuwait remains winless, with two draws and one loss. Goal scorers for Oman: Abdulrahman Al Mushaifri, Abdullah Fawaz, Muhsen Al Ghasani
UAE 1:1 DPR Korea
Tumblr media
In what can be termed a shocking result, the UAE dropped points against North Korea in a nail-biting game of football. North Korea turned out to be a surprisingly tough team to compete against for UAE, as they struggled to find the back of the net against the east asian team. Despite clearly being the better side, North Korea conceded first and had to work hard to restore the scoreline. Their efforts paid off as they were presented with the opportunity to level the score from the spot but Khalid Elsa stood tall and made a crucial save which allowed UAE to hold onto their lead. The lead didn't last long as Il Gwan Jong scored in the 88th minute to draw level allowing North Korea to salvage a point from this game. The UAE currently holds 3rd place in the standings with 4 points, while DPR Korea is positioned second last with 2 points from three matches. Despite their recent draw, the UAE remains ahead in the race, while North Korea is still searching for their first win of the campaign. Goal scorer for UAE: Yahya Alghassani Goal scorer for DPR Korea: Il Gwan Jong
Qatar 3:1 Kyrgyzstan
Tumblr media
Qatar secured a crucial victory over Kyrgyzstan in their FIFA World Cup qualifier, living up to their pre-match billing as clear favorites. Tintin Marquez's side demonstrated their attacking prowess, preventing Kyrgyzstan from settling into their usual rhythm. Akram Afif delivered another standout performance, while Almoez Ali made his mark with a goal. This win propels Qatar to 4th place in the standings with 4 points from three games, while Kyrgyzstan's winless run continues in their pursuit of the World Cup 2026 qualification. Goal scorers for Qatar: Almoez Ali, Ibrahim Al Hassan, Tamirlan Kozubaev (OG) Goal scorers for Kyrgyzstan: Alimardon Shukurov
Saudi Arabia 0:2 Japan
Tumblr media
The Samurai Blue continued their flawless performance in the World Cup qualifier on Thursday with a decisive victory over the Green Falcons of Arabia. Despite the valiant efforts of Roberto Mancini's squad, they proved no match for the Japanese, who showcased their dominance as the leading team in Asian football. Although Saudi Arabia enjoyed higher possession and took more shots than Japan, their efforts were rendered ineffective as the Japanese displayed greater efficiency in front of the goal. This victory keeps Japan at the top of the standings with a perfect record, while Saudi Arabia sits in 3rd place with 4 points. Goal scorers for Japan: Daichi Kamada, Koki Ogawa
Iraq 1:0 Palestine
Tumblr media
The Lions of Mesopotamia secured a vital victory against a resilient Palestine in their latest World Cup qualifier. The Iraqi side, managed by Jesus Garcia, entered the match as clear favourites, demonstrating both physical and technical superiority. Aymen Hussein's decisive goal in the 31st minute proved to be the match-winner, allowing Iraq to claim all three points. Despite Palestine's determined efforts in the closing minutes, the Iraqi defense held firm, ensuring a clean sheet. With two wins from three matches, Iraq remains undefeated and sits in 2nd place in the standings, level on points with group leaders South Korea, while Palestine occupies the bottom position with 2 draws and 1 loss from three games. Goal scorer for Iraq: Aymen Hussein

Shen Jiawei, one of Australia’s best known master portraitists, was born and grew up in China. He was a well-established oil painting artist in China where his painting Standing Guard for Our Great Motherland (1974) became an icon…..
…..Shen’s masterpiece, Tower of Babel (2023), an epic artwork 20 years in the making that recreates an alternative art history of the 20th century by tracing the biggest movement of all: the International Communist Movement. The whole work consists of 90 panels, with remixes of over 100 original artworks and containing 400 individual portraits of historical characters on four murals entitled respectively “Utopia”, “Internationale”, “Gulag” and “Saturnus”. The biggest and central piece is “Utopia” which has Pieter Bruegel’s Tower of Babel as the framework with the design of Tatlinʼs Tower on the top. Tower of Babel is a visual history of the political and art movements of the 20th century, reimagined and curated by the artist Shen Jiawei….
Tower of Babel was conceived in 2001 and completed in 2023. This monumental artwork has been more than twenty years in the making. The actual work is housed in the artist’s purpose-built three-storey studio, covering four walls with 90 panels. The epic masterpiece contains remixes of 130 original artworks and 400 individual portraits of historical characters who were related to or associated with the international Communist movement throughout the 20th century. The four murals are named “Utopia”, “L’Internationale”, “Gulag” and “Saturnus”…
…The way he represents history in his artworks is quite unique and requires reflection from a contemporary and fresh angle. In his Sulman Prize-winning work, Peking Treaty (2006), he transposes Mantegna’s foreshortened Christ to the empty centre of the large Peking Treaty table where Eastern and Western diplomats negotiate a settlement of the Boxer Revolution.
B     correspondences.work
A gifted painter and portraitist of renown, he has been an Archibald Prize finalist fourteen times (including once as runner-up in 1997) and the winner of the Mary MacKillop Art Award (1995), the Sulman Prize (2006) and the Gallipoli Art Award (2016). He has been commissioned by the Australian Government to paint official portraits for the Governor-General, the Prime Minister, Speakers and HRH Crown Princess of Denmark. Best-known for his complex history paintings, his works are represented in public and private collections in Australia and throughout the world including, the Vatican art collection and the National Museum, the National Art Museum and the National Military Museum in Beijing.

Excerpts from “The Fate of a Painting” by Shen Jiawei
Since its completion in 1974, my oil painting Standing Guard for Our Great Motherland has had a very strange fate. It has become somewhat of a cultural artifact, an embodiment of the narrative of the Cultural Revolution.
When Mao Zedong launched the Cultural Revolution in May 1966, it signaled the end of my dreams of studying at an art academy. But at the same time, the Cultural Revolution turned me into a painter, and, what is more, a painter who achieved fame at a very young age. ……………… I grew up in a small provincial city and never had the chance to be trained in the fundamentals of art. My only influence was an uncle who had studied art in the past. So, before I became a painter, I had never done life drawing, plaster modeling, or still lifes. In fact, many artists of my generation were able to become oil painters only because of the Cultural Revolution. Before 1966, most Chinese households could never have afforded to buy oil paints for their children who studied art; most people’s monthly salaries amounted to the cost of only a few dozen tubes of paint. But during the Cultural Revolution, all work units needed people to paint portraits of Mao Zedong. Once we completed the paintings, we were allowed to keep the leftover paints to do our own work. This is why oil painting (western painting) subsequently became so widespread in China; it was one of the more positive by-products of the Cultural Revolution. …………………… I completed my work [Standing Guard] in July 1974. In keeping with the practice of the times, I did not sign the painting, but wrote only my name and work unit on the back of the canvas. In September, I was notified that this work had been selected for the national art exhibition. In October, I went on leave and used my own money to travel to Beijing to see the exhibition. On the train, I used my scrapbook of source material to write and copy notes on the process I followed in creating the painting. These notes were half true and half fabricated. This was because at that time any kind of writing, even personal diaries, could be subjected to public reading. Any politically incorrect word could bring disaster in its wake. So I had to make sure that even my notes on my creative process were in keeping with official standards.
When I [arrived in Beijing and] walked into the National Art Gallery, I discovered that my painting was hanging in the most prominent position in the exhibition hall, on the center left. But when I moved in for a closer look, I was in for a shock: the faces of the two soldiers had been reworked. It was obvious that my efforts to paint a picture as close to reality as possible had not been acceptable to the authorities. ………………………………. In 1981, a friend in the Heilongjiang Provincial Artists Association in Harbin told me that Standing Guard had been sent back by the National Art Gallery and was being kept in the art association’s storage area. He said that I could go and pick it up. The next year, when I went to get it, I discovered that both the outer and inner frames were gone. The canvas has been improperly rolled (outside in) and tossed into a rubbish heap in the basement. I unrolled it just a bit and saw that flakes of paint were coming off. When I got it back to Shenyang, I did not dare to open it all the way and just stuck it under my bed, where it stayed for many years.
In 1989, I emigrated to Australia. In 1997, I was invited by the Guggenheim Museum to lend it my painting for a major exhibition, “China: Five Thousand Years.” I asked someone to bring the rolled-up painting from China to Sydney for me. I took it to the conservation department of the Art Gallery of New South Wales, and there, for the first time, I unrolled it completely. Everyone in the room at that moment was in shock: the painting was covered with soot and had suffered water damage; two-thirds of its surface had come off. Under the guidance of the professional conservators [there], I slowly and painstakingly restored the painting. However, there were two sections of the painting that I was glad were damaged: the two faces that had been repainted on the orders of Wang Mantian were completely obliterated. Referring to photographs I had of the original work, as well as my extensive notes, I was now able to restore them to their original appearance.
D johnmcdonald.net.au
By 1970 he found himself in Heilongjiang province on the Russian border. There he worked as a propaganda artist, entering paintings in national competitions. In 1974 his picture, Standing guard for our great motherland was praised by Mao’s wife, Jiang Qing, and acquired for the National Art Museum. When he saw the work on display in the museum Jiawei was shocked to find the soldiers’ faces had been repainted to make them look more heroic. In this new guise the painting was reproduced in poster form and sent all over China. ... The actual painting was dumped from the museum after the fall of the Gang of Four and recovered by the artist from a rubbish dump in 1981. He restored the work and recently sold it at auction for a sizeable sum, which he is using to build a large new studio in Bundeena.
E nelsonmeersfoundation.org.au
Renowned Chinese-Australian artist Jiawei Shen is painting a monumental artwork that he claims will give meaning to his whole life. This former Red Guard, still famous in China for painting one of the most famous images of the Cultural Revolution, Standing Guard For The Great Motherland, is now creating a fantastic parable of the history of Communism, in the style that has established him as the foremost history painter in Australia today.
Epic in concept and scale, his Tower of Babel painting depicts over 400 famous and infamous characters including politicians, soldiers, scientists, artists, writers and filmmakers who were won over by the utopian vision of the Communist movement, as well as many forgotten people who lost their lives to Revolution. It also includes remixes of 130 iconic artworks by left wing artists, including Picasso, Matisse, Léger, Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo; on a huge canvas of 130 square meters, as high as a 3-story building.
In telling the stories of Jiawei’s own personal journey and that of his wife Lan, from poverty in Mao’s China, through the tumult of the Cultural Revolution, and eventually as political refugees to Australia, the film will show how personal biography inspires art. Now, as tensions between Australia and China escalate and there is even talk of war from some Australian politicians, how will Jiawei’s most important work be received? Can the past speak to the present or will it be silenced?
F the artist: One painting can have many different meanings and I encourage people to make their own assumptions about the painting.
