TAG GAME: EIGHT SHOWS TO GET TO KNOW ME
tagged by @sarahlancashire 💖
scott & bailey - this is the show that got me into fandom and fanfiction (reading and writing) and basically without it i would never have met any of my internet friends. aside from that, i am not immune to fictional middle-aged female detectives with wine-red nail varnish - gill murray and julie dodson i’m looking at you both. special mention to any and all episodes written by amelia bullmore bc gdi the woman is a comedic genius
home fires - i don’t really go for war stuff usually, but this cast drew me in and thank the gods it did bc this was gorgeous. this is the show that gave me my username bc alison scotlock is the loml. it has it all - great stories, beautiful cinematography, excellent acting, a great soundtrack, plentiful pretty ladies for the milf lovers amongst us...
yonderland - only wanted to choose one show by the six idiots and honestly it could have been any of them, but yonderland won because it’s just so CLEVER while being utterly silly, which is absolutely my kind of thing. negatus is supposed to be the baddie but is just... silly and incompetent, which makes him adorable. lots of wise elder vex’s lines became lil echolalia things for me for months after i watched it
call the midwife - this is the show that has been with me for the longest time. it started when i was 15 and it’s seen me through so much and it’s my annual ‘let’s have a big cry every sunday in january and february’ comfort show with a side order of intense emotions. i have loved and/or appreciated 99% of the storylines, midwives and nuns. phyllis crane and sister julienne are my LOVES
dinnerladies - victoria wood. need i say more? this show is like an old friend to me. i can’t remember the first time i watched it but i must have seen it over 15 times. victoria’s writing is incredible and all of the cast are VERY good at bringing her characters to life. this is a get to know me and also my family kind of show - it’s the one we will all sit and watch and laugh along to and we quote it every day
last tango in halifax - look, i’m not saying some of these shows to get to know me aren’t mildly to extremely traumatising, they’re just the shows that have had the most impact on my life. sally i will never forgive you for THAT and also series 5 was so weird, but this was the first show with wlw in it that i watched after i came out and also caroline elliot is another loml (ok i have a lot...)
mum - sitcoms with added pulling hard on the heartstrings are where it’s AT. this is SO well-written and i’m a sucker for that realism. if you think it’s slow and boring then you’re watching it wrong. cathy walker, i love you. she’s so gentle. you know this show is good bc there’s a het relationship that i cry about. it’s the yearninggggg
holby city (series 14 - series 21) - again, this is not The Best by a LONG shot, but berena was my whole life when i was not great mentally and had very little else. they are my ultimate ship and bernie wolfe has my whole entire heart and basically the ik they’re fictional but if the two of them can go through the most traumatising shit and still be “happier than i ever thought possible” finding the love of their life at over 50 years of age, that gives me boundless hope <3

If any of the followers wants to help, it'd be appreciated.
So. What's an adult TV series that has
complex/compelling female leads (don't have to be queer, but it's a bonus if there are some) or an ensemble cast with a lot of women,
an engaging story,
has a somewhat active/enthusiastic fandom on here (doesn't have to be HOTD or "Yellowjackets" levels of enthusiastic).
I dropped "Good Girls" again after finishing the first two episodes of season 4, because as much as I love the ladies, the arcs are repetitive af at this point.
I wanted to watch "The Good Fight" and "Black Sails," but I'm afraid they'll have to wait. "The L Word" and "Orphan Black" too.
Some of the series I enjoyed at some point:
"The Handmaid's Tale," OITNB, "I May Destroy You," "Unbelievable," "Veep," "Dead Ringers," "The Good Wife," "My Brilliant Friend," "The Returned," "Bad Sisters," "Chewing Gum," "Black Earth Rising," "Mrs. America," "GLOW," "Kevin Can Fuck Himself," "Big Little Lies," "Night Country," "Top of the Lake," "Godless," "Frontera Verde," "Ethos," "One Night," "The Power," "Girls5eva," "UnREAL," "Damages," "Insecure," "Unorthodox," "P-Valley," "Russian Doll," "Hacks," "Grace and Frankie," "Shining Girls," "Killing Eve," "Fleabag," "Why Women Kill," "Poker Face," "The Queen's Gambit," "Borgen," "Mare of Easttown," "Irma Vep," "Alias Grace," "Miss Sherlock," "Last Tango in Halifax," "The Fall," "The Bletchey Circle," "Servant," "We Are Lady Parts," "Made for Love," "Claws," "The Girlfriend Experience," "Dear White People," "Little Fires Everywhere," "Sharp Objects," "Lovecraft Country," “The Underground Railroad," "Under the Bridge," "Derry Girls" (<-a teen series, but I made an exception because everyone here told me it was worth it), “Station Eleven," "The Great," "Beef," "She's Gotta Have It," "Twenties," "Olive Kitteridge," "Enlightened," "Babylon Berlin," "Deadloch," "Vida," "Feel Good," "Gentleman Jack," "La Casa de las Flores" (<-never let it be said I don't enjoy millennial telenovelas).
Female fronted series I haven't finished:
HTGAWM, "Wentworth" (<-couldn't get into it).
Series I was/am kinda meh about:
"The Wilds" (<-"Yellowjackets" all the way), "Dead to Me," "Roar," "The Fosters," "Lost Girl," "Westworld" (<-post season 1), "The Haunting of Bly Manor" (not big on Flanagan's works), “Bridgerton," "Ratched," "Dickinson."
Series I haven't tried yet:
"The Diplomat," "Harlots," "Gilded Age," "The Bold Type" (<-surprisingly, it doesn't seem like my thing), "Workin' Moms," "Girlfriends Guide to Divorce," "Happy Valley," "Halt and Catch Fire," "West Wing," "Broadchurch," "The Split," "A Small Light," "Scandal," "For All Mankind," "Mindhunter," "Sense8," "1899," "Utopia," "Transparent," "The Morning Show," "Rain Dogs," The Mindy Project," "Vigil," "High Fidelity," "Only Murders in the Building," "Julia," "Pen15," "Weeds," "Girls."

I got tagged by @methad1ne (technically on my other account but uh, all the non-art stuff goes here, so, biem). Thanks matey <3
✨ get to know you meme ✨
last song: The Sound of silence - Lacuna Coil favourite colour: Ochre yellow, Mossy green last tv show: Spooks, I'm still rewatching, so nothing has changed from the last time I did this meme. Though, for variation: the last film I watched was Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (2022) sweet/spicy/savoury: salty comfort character(s): Pretty much most characters portrayed by Nicola Walker, though the prominent ones are Gillian Greenwood (Last Tango in Halifax) and Ruth Evershed (Spooks). Shoutout to Helen Sinclair (Doctor Who) as well. last google: I don't Google. I have Firefox. And so should you. Takes less than 10 minutes to switch and they'll transfer all your browser data from the old one to Firefox for you. But my last search was what Loonheffing does specifically. current obsession: [points at blog URL] I just love the Pleasant Green Universe man, I do.
Tagging @warandpussy @pers-books @ceridwyn2 and whoever else wants. Really, help yourself. And if you don't want to, don't. All fine ;)

20 Questions for Writers
Haven't done one of these in ages so let's have a go, thanks for the tag @capybaraonabicycle :D
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
207
2. What's your total AO3 word count?
2,039,066
3. What fandoms do you write for?
Doctor Who (179) first an foremost. <3
Some of the others include:
Holby City (12) - that was a long time ago lol
Last Tango In Halifax (8)
Happy Valley (TV) (6)
Collateral (TV 2018) (5)
Spooks | MI-5 (2)
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
It's called Marriage, Honey (1064): A collection of River/13 oneshots.
Home For Christmas (760): My first advent calender fic! River/multiple Doctors, mainly 13.
When The Doctor Comes To Call (696): One of my first River/13 oneshots but a bit of River/11 thrown in.
When the Wind stands fair (489): My first River/13 multi-chapter and library fix it.
World Enough, And Time (485): A pretty elaborate River/13 fic in which River had a child with 12 on Darillium but hidden it from him and gave it to Vastra and Jenny before heading to the library. Only, the baby gets kidnapped and 13 is the one who deals with the fallout.
5. Do you respond to comments?
Absolutely! When someone took the time to comment, it's only polite to at least say thank you!
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
I think probably Drowning and Fracture.
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Almost all of them have happy endings, I couldn't possibly pick!
8. Do you get hate on fics?
Not really, thankfully.
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
Yes. .... occasionally... spanning quite a range of femslash.
10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?
Yes, though I wouldn't call them crazy. I like writing AUs of other worlds, i.e. Liv/Helen versions of Chess, Bodyguard, Lord of the Rings, Tár, Hijack, London Has Fallen... But actual crossovers would be writing Happy Valley/Collateral together (cause it just makes sense!). I also once wrote a pretty mad crossover of multiple Big Finish ranges (8DA, Gallifrey, UNIT, DoRS, War Master...) and put them in the Land of Oz so that was fun.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
I don't think so and hope it stays that way.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
No. I could translate them myself into German but don't really see the point when most people read English anyway.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Yeah, done quite a few with @calunalilly now, like our most recent project, a Doctor Who-Lord of the Rings AU :D Not All Those Who Wander Are Lost
14. What’s your all time favorite ship?
Liv Chenka/Helen Sinclair. There is no contest. 179 of my fics are them and will continue to write for them!!
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
Years ago I had started a Liv/Helen Hogwarts AU The Shape Of Things To Come but as it's since become unacceptable to engage with that content anymore. I doubt I will get back to it sadly which is a shame cause I hate leaving something unfinished but alas.
16. What are your writing strengths?
Dialogue I think? Seems to flow very easily but action too, I think, when I want to take the time for it. I'm always surprised afterwards with how exciting it is :D
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Writing enough grounding around the dialogue. I have to remind myself to do that half the time.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
If there is a point to it, sure, but not just to show off you speak multiple languages lol.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
Harry Potter.
20. Favorite fic you’ve written?
That's a tough one... there are a lot I am very proud of for different reasons.
A Numbers Game for probably being my biggest achievement to date in terms of length and complexity. I spent so much time on that fic and love it!
What The Future Holds packs such an emotional punch, I cried writing it. And it's the only way I can make sense of the ending of Stranded and fix it properly.
The Bodyguard and the following sequels just work so so well as an Alternate Universe, I'm super happy with how it all came together and it just works.
But I think, overall, my favourite thing I've ever written and that I'm proudest of is Romance In D Minor. Just in terms of how well it's written, I've really thought about it, structure, pacing and it's just- Yes. It's the one.
Tagging some people I think might be interested but anyone who sees this and fancies it, please fell free! @calunalilly @meluisart @sircarolyn @elizabethshaw @serenbex

My TV show favourites of all time
Life on Mars & Ashes to Ashes - they cannot be bested. Goated shows.
Doctor Who - RTD era only. Nostalgia n that.
Black Mirror - UK series’ only. I first watched it when I was 13 and it was …memorable to say the least.
Bob & Rose - a wonderful creation by RTD. Despite its simplicity, this is really something special. Very funny and excellent dialogue.
Queer as Folk - Groundbreaking. Fun. Camp.
Cucumber - I think of this as as a sequel/modern day equivalent to Queer as Folk.
Line of Duty - Series 1-3 only. Intense.
Bodies - Jed Mercurio’s show. Rather underrated and unknown by most. Highly recommended, especially if you like dark humour
Frasier - The most British American sitcom ever. I enjoyed up until Daphne and Niles got together.
Waterloo Road - Series 1-8 were so much fun to watch whilst at school.
Misfits - A really funny show that also happens to have some great sci fi elements. I didn’t expect to enjoy this one so much. It’s like “Skins” but far superior.
Breaking Bad - a classic. Despite being slow at times, those last episodes at the end of series 5 more than made up for it.
The Sopranos - I once saw a great fanfic writer explain the show perfectly: “the sopranos is to television what Dante’s inferno is to literature”. There’s a good reason this one is always put at the top of those “greatest tv shows of all time” lists. Watch it and find out. My mistake was watching this show too young - many jokes went over my head. Definitely due a rewatch :)
Game of Thrones - Series 1-4 are excellent, and do (fairly) well to stay true to the books. Series 5 onwards isn’t worth your time. Highly recommended to read the books first before watching the show!
This is going to hurt - I enjoyed this much more than I expected. The guy who plays the main character of the show does it really quite well.
Peep show - As i age, this show only becomes more relatable. British humour at its best
Brass Eye - Chris Morris is the GOAT! The original Ali G.
Jam - Another Chris Morris show. Everything he’s made is of the highest quality. Jam just happens to be one of the darkest shows I’ve ever watched. It’s pure genius but not for the faint of hearts. Lovely ambient soundtrack as well.
The thick of it - Malcolm Tucker is an icon. An awful but hilarious, raging mad Scottish legend. The political satire is off the charts good.
Green wing - Very silly, but very funny. There’s a twist in the end of series 1 that is genuinely unexpected. One of the most unique sitcoms you’ll watch.
Nathan Barley - Chris Morris and Charlie Brooke, two geniuses, get together to create a TV show. Of course it was going to be fantastic. This one took me a while to get into, but once I did, it made me laugh a lot.
The book group - I have a weird fondness for this. Highly recommended if you’re a book nerd.
The simpsons - the golden years made it one of the best shows ever. And it will never not be weird how the Simpson’s managed to be spot on with its predictions.
It’s a sin - Made me cry. A lot. Educated me as well. It’s a RTD show, of course I was going to love it.
End of the fucking world - a show I watched ages ago, but I remember liking a lot. Can’t remember too much of what happened, but I had a lot of affection for the characters.
Sex House - online series that can be watched on YouTube from the onion account. Despite the raunchy title, it’s anything but that. It’s a lot smarter than you would think it to be. Watch it. But don’t expect much sex.
Last tango in Halifax - not the type of show I usually enjoy. But the sally wainwrights writing make the characters endearing, and what might seem like a slow boring show spring into something funny and special.
Happy Valley - Sarah Lancashire…Christ on a bike, that woman can act.
Clocking Off - Series 1-2 are surprisingly great. I was mostly invested in Mac’s character, but the writing for most of the episodes is quality.
Humans - Series 1 was really enjoyable. Don’t remember the other series that well.
The Wire - Tragically I have only watched the first series, but it was really super. One of those shows that’s tricky to get into at first, but we’ll worth pursuing.
Death Note - Can i include anime here? Of course. I usually turn my nose up at anime actually, but this one is different to most. There is a cat and mouse dynamic between the two main characters L and Light. This drives the plot. It’s a remarkable show, one I like to rewatch every now and then.
Killing Eve - My oh my, this show went downhill fast. I include it as a favourite merely because series 1 alone was utter perfection.
Goodness gracious me - Asians are funny. Also cuts deep into racism in the uk at the time.
Sugar Rush - I really enjoyed watching this when I was a teen.
Luther - like killing eve and death note, there is a cat and mouse dynamic between Luther and Alice (a psychopath) in this show which is what makes it something special
The traitors - a reality show like no other. The game theory, particularly in the early episodes make this really fun to watch.
Years and Years - Yet more RTD. This one made me cry as well, inevitably, but it was also warm and fuzzy in places too.

omg i'm soooo glad you're enjoying scott and bailey. i know the show doesn't really fit the definition of "queerbaiting" as such, but they FEEL like lesbians to me despite the constant scrotes going in and out of their lives. i think it's because they are so normal and look normal and dress normal. there are no fillers or shapewear or high heels or performances of femininity. they're just normal kinda grungey women (who should kiss). it's v refreshing compared to how sexualised and feminised a lot of female characters on tv are (even ones who are meant to be lesbians).
did you ever watch the rookie (or the rookie: feds)? there is a lesbian character who pops up on the rookie and then as the lead in the spin off, and she is squeezed into skin tight cleavage tops and dresses 24/7. she has a full face of make up at all times. her hair is glamorous and silky. she's a lesbian but i felt completely disconnected from her, whereas i do feel connected to scott and bailey (and jill!!!).
can i rec another "wow everyone looks a real human" show to you (sorry, you've got so much to watch already haha). last tango in halifax. it's not a cop show, but bear with me. it's about an old man and an old woman meeting and falling in love (again, bear with me). the reason i'm reccing it to you is their (unrelated) adult daughters who i shipped like i have never shipped anything else in my whole entire life. like it got to the point where i - a lesbian woc - was howling at the tv like "PLEASE break up with your black girlfriend and go marry your white sister in law!!!!" LMFAO. there was so much electricity between them!!! if you watch this after you're done with s&b, you'll notice that one of the daughters is the recurring lesbian from s&b s3 :)
You're right, and the writing is really solid too and the acting is good. But yeah, they look like beautiful women but a real kind of beautiful. And they aren't posing constantly, or being made up when they are supposed to be a mess. Grungey isn't the right word, because they are still feminine and well dressed and thin actresses, but still 10000% percent real. You see age, and lack of padding, and no surgery, and a normal amount of makeup, these women look like they may be your boss, or the lady at the bus stop with you or someone you see buying coffee. For women who have het love affairs I do enjoy them more than the any lesbian character played by a 23 year old straight swimwear model who can't act her way out of a paper bag and is given a story about as complex as "oooh a girl kissed me what do I do?" You're 27 stacy go finger her about it! I quick the rookie early on, the actual cases they went on were fucking stupid, I only got about five episodes in before quitting, I seriously only think this show got greenlit because nathan fillion got a bunch of money from cops to create recruitment propaganda for them. The episode where the tiny women was abusing her massive wrestler husband was pure fantasy. I can imagine they can't write a lesbian character for shit either, or dress her in anyway that says she's for the female audience. I am surprised they didn't let us have any of the women as gay or bi, at least give us gill, but no...Scott and Bailey says you will love these het women and eat these crumps of female solidarity.
Lmao I'll add last tango in halifax to the long list, today I am watching miss marple, so I don't end up marathon all of S&B before my vacation is up, but they love to give them a black girlfriend and give the two characters no chemistry, just boring token rep, so I can see even the sister in law chemistry being more interesting. If you do want to watch a crime show (of course I am predictable) with a interracial lesbian couple, one of my favorites is Pippy and Tara from Rosewood. It's a series cancelled two season in, but they are adorable and I love them. Both really femme but they sell gay to me.

Ships Have Sailed Team Up with Abby Posner for Rock Anthem ‘Get Loud’
Tumblr media
Los Angeles based alt-rock band, Ships Have Sailed teamed up with indie-folk artist, Abby Posner and released their foot-stomping single, ‘Get Loud’ this past fall. Ships Have Sailed is the brainchild of vocalist and guitarist Will Carpenter, generally configured as a duo with drummer, Art Andranikyan. The music they create together is uplifting and buoyant. The lyrics reveal a thoughtful and conscientious perspective. And over the years the sound has evolved into sincere indie rock with an unabashed pop structure. Carpenter describes the band’s moniker not as a pessimistic reference to the renowned idiom “that ship has sailed,” but instead a fresh, positive perspective on the unexpected outcomes of unforeseen circumstances. They’ve recorded and released a diverse collection of albums, EPs, and singles that consistently evoke an unrestrained cathartic desire to be heard and enjoyed. Either through crescendoing ballads or indie rock alacrity, their music always captures a uniform sense of sanguine sensibility. By combining an ardent work ethic with an impressive range, the band has maintained a well-earned buzz that has led to international tours, impressive industry showcases, and awards honoring their independence. During the height of the global pandemic, the band released their album ‘Ages’, most of which was co-produced by Dan Sadin (M, Joy Oladokun). It was a testament to the band’s progressive journey. As a follow up, the duo took matters into their own hands while patiently waiting for tours to start back up again when they decided to host a high-quality live virtual album concert for their close friends, fans and followers which resulted in a live album being born. Their single, ‘Silence’ was released in May of this year and had the honor of being featured on the Season 19 finale of Grey’s Anatomy. Longtime friend and fellow collaborator, Abby Posner has been twisting genres, and pushing the boundaries of folk, roots, electronic, and pop music since she can remember, making her “Genre Fluid”. As a CalArts music grad, Posner has composed and produced music for TV, film, and commercials including Hulu’s Maggie, The Fosters, This American Life, The Art of More, Last Tango in Halifax and more. Posner can be spotted in GLEE Season 4 playing banjo and guitar, and the Freeform show Famous In Love playing banjo. Posner has also scored music for multiple films including Across Land Across Sea, Through Their Eyes, Elizabeth Sees, and recently scored the award-winning documentary Lady Buds while playing and touring all over the US. Posner is an official Showcase Artist at Americana Fest 2023, and her music video “Quiet On Sunset” was recently featured on CMT. Ships Have Sailed partnered up with Posner to create a rock-heavy anthem that has captured the ears of many. On the surface, the track itself is a foot-stomping, slightly twangy, rootsey rock anthem that screams for attention and speaks to overcoming adversity and standing up for everything the band believes in. Beneath the obvious, however, there’s always a deeper story which all began when the U.S. Supreme Court made the controversial and unprecedented decision to overturn Roe vs. Wade. Carpenter gives us the gritty details on how the idea initially came to be, “My first instinct upon hearing of the decision was to be angry, so I sat with that for a moment, and then reflected on all the times throughout history when the powers that be attempt to strip away the rights of many to appease the few. A thought popped into my head: “ok, so it’s about to get loud”. I wanted to bring a different perspective into the writing process, so I immediately reached out to a dear friend of mine, Abby Posner, who is an incredibly talented artist and producer and who I felt would bring an important lens to the song. I explained the idea and where it came from and she jumped in immediately.” Posner chimes in on the track, “We wrote this song during a very raw and vulnerable time, and we were feeling angry, and frustrated. We wanted to write a song that embodied all of these complex emotions. A song that felt like a movement. When you take rights away from human beings…it gets loud, and I hope this song motivates people to get even louder.” Since the release of ‘Get Loud’, the duo has not only captured the attention of fans and followers across the globe, but to their joyous surprise, it also captured the ears of the USA Songwriting Competition. ‘Get Loud’ won the grand prize the world’s leading international songwriting competition. While the track continues to gain momentum, it has received support from major publications like Billboard Argentina, Wonderland Magazine, Grimy Goods and more.
