Okay, so I went ahead and created a throwaway account for this so I can protect my main account. Fingers crossed that the mouse doesn’t hit this with the ban-hammer but I took a stab at re-editing the TROS ending. So, here are a few notes on my process:
1. I tried to not go crazy with the edit. Every choice I made was meant to be as logical as possible with what I had to work with. Keep in mind, sources say that editors were still making changes as late as Nov. 25th. By that point, little to nothing could be reshot and the score was most certainly set.
2. Most of my editing cues came from the placement of Rey and Ben’s hands as well as trying to spot which scenes had been reversed in post -- like Ben’s “fall.”
3. The rest of my cues came from “Farewell,” which is the track that plays during these scenes. Some of the musical themes only make sense to me in certain contexts (I’m looking at you magical chimes and playful Force theme). Also, that swell to fanfare towards the end is the stereotypical music that plays during Big Kiss™ scene. Don’t believe me? Go watch this scene from Beauty and the Beast for me: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wP3x8rGdbsE. Or this scene from Tangled: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1dXm3lXFTi4. And who could forget this Big Kiss™ scene https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ooWJpI3Chck
4. Regardless, this exercise has me convinced that there was a lot left behind the cutting room floor. Editing the scene this way not only hits traditional fairytale beats such as the big fanfare swell to the Big Kiss™ scene, but it also plays out as reverse Anidala. I honestly believe that this cut is not too far-fetched based on what is already in the scene and in the story.
Hope you enjoy what could have been.

Across the Stars and Behind the Score: A Reylo Story.
Okay, so, maybe one day I will be able to post this in video essay because it will make more sense with visuals and audio but I may have to wait until I can get my clips of TROS through “official” channels. Until then, we will have to make this work.
There are very few elements of Star Wars that have managed to persist throughout the entirety of the Skywalker Saga. However, perhaps one of the most consistent elements of Star Wars is this man:
John Williams has been the mastermind behind the soundtrack for all nine of the Saga films. From the Imperial March, to the Duel of Fates, and Across the Stars, Williams’s arrangements are what breathe life into these films.
And, in today’s TED Talk, I will prove that the true ending of TROS rests in the themes of his music.
Beware of spoilers and get cosy. This is a bit of a read.
Okay, let’s start with some of the basics. Music tells stories -- just as visual art does. Different instruments or cords can convey different meanings. We humans also tend to gravitate towards certain musical tropes whether we realize it or not...
Check out Pop 101 by Marianas Trench for examples of how these themes appear in pop culture.
youtube
The musical themes of Star Wars are no exception.
What song pops into your head when you see this guy?
You thought of this, right? The iconic Imperial March.
What about the Millennium Falcon?
You probably heard this theme right?
Leia and Han have their own theme. Anakin and Padme have theirs. The Force has a theme.
Not only do each of the characters have a unique and compelling theme, Williams also uses these themes in similar ways. For example: Guess what theme plays in each of these scenes?
You instantly knew right?
Okay, so now that we have that out of the way, let’s talk about what is strange about the use of John Williams’s music in TROS.
Movie soundtracks are quite interesting and can be powerful tools in enhancing an actor’s performance. Musical cues can help an audience know how to respond to certain scenes. This video gives a great rundown of the power of a well-done movie soundtrack.
youtube
So let’s look at the end of TROS shall we? I believe that the secret to the true ending of the film, which includes a happy ending for both Ben and Rey can be found in the last 3 tracks. Here they are for reference:
Farewell which plays underneath the following scenes in TROS: Rey’s Death, Ben Return, Ben’s Sacrifice, the BIG KISS, Ben’s Death, the Destruction of the Star Destroyers, Rey Emerges Victorious, and the Fleet Returns Home.
Reunion which is the track that plays underneath the following scenes: The Heroes Return to Base, Chewie Gets his Metal, the Trio Reunites, Lando and Jannah have a Moment, and Everyone Celebrates. Note, this track was not used in its entirety during the movie.
And finally, A New Home, which doesn’t start playing until Rey reaches the Uncle Owen’s moister farm on Tatooine.
Even without seeing any visuals, these tracks convey a clear story. Farewell starts with a melancholic variant of the force’s theme. It moves through minor cords before sharply becoming dark and moves through mournful passages based on Kylo Ren’s theme. There are several crescendos to tremolos on strings, which are used to build suspense. In fact, many aspects of Farewell remind me of Adagio for Strings, which is arguably one of the saddest string pieces I’ve ever preformed. The beginning of Farewell sounds like a death scene.
But then, something happens... A mischievous variant of the Force’s Theme sneaks into the piece.
Now, this mischievous Force Theme originally plays under Ben’s Smile.
Which honestly seems like a strange place to put a mischievous variant of the force. Especially since Farewell immediately shifts back to its melancolic theme again. And even though Farewell continues to unfold as a mournful song, the visuals don’t seem to match. Leia fades away, but Rey, the person who should be mourning, receives no screen time to do so, even though the music is setting the stage for such a scene.
In fact, TROS visuals seems to want to showcase everything EXCEPT Rey’s mourning for Ben.
And here is the reason why: Ben wasn’t supposed to die, which is why they have a lack of footage of Rey mourning.
But the strange use of Farewell doesn’t stop there.
Magical chimes which are usually used to indicate something magical or miraculous has happened, play underneath scenes of burning Star Destroyers -- an odd and kind of morbid juxtaposition.
Farewell eventually swells to a victorious fanfare and concludes in a major key. This happens underneath Rey’s X-wing emerging from Exogol and the fleet returning home. HOWEVER, Williams has already established what the Hero’s Victory should sound like. Can you think of it?
youtube
During Reunion, the oddities are there yet less pronounced -- Leia’s theme plays under Lando instead of Maz, who plays Leia’s part in the throwback reenactment of the awards ceremony from Episode IV. The Force theme plays even though there are no force users on screen (another Force Theme variety plays under Finn. And while I know he is force-sensitive, he is not our main force user. That is Rey.). The music cuts awkwardly during Poe and Zorii’s wordless exchange.
There is no way that Williams’s didn’t plan for specific theme progressions during the “Heroes Return.” It’s obvious during the track -- He had a specific progression of character appearances in mind when he composed “Reunion.”
What is even more telling is if you simply replace “Reunion” at the start of collapse of the Star Destroyers, all of the musical themes hit exactly where they need to. See what I mean here.
Finally, “A New Home,” paints a metamorphosis. It takes a variety of Rey’s Theme and move through half-step cord progressions that are painted with rolling magical chimes that swell to a crescendo before fading to the iconic Force’s Theme that usually plays with the Binary Sunset. A New Home is mainly uses to accent Anakin and Leia’s lightsaber’s descent into Tatooine’s sands. It holds promises that something is different -- a revelation lurks around the corner.
The Finale’s Force theme plays over Rey as she has a strange conversation with a weird lady before proclaiming herself Rey Skywalker.
SO YOU’VE MADE IT THIS FAR. I’M SURE YOU ARE WONDERING WHAT THIS MEANS FOR REYLO.
FIRST, it is important to remember that the soundtrack score is finalized long before the final cut of the film and is not really altered once the composer is finished writing and recording the music. This means that if the music feels like it doesn’t match a scene, then the composer probably didn’t intend for the score to go there.
I think that this is painfully evident in the BIG KISS scene. Why does Farewell, a piece that begins dark and melancholic rise to conclude in a major key? Because that scene was suppose to conclude with our heroes being elevated to a place of triumph. Why is there a victorious fanfare? Because that is how fairytale kisses work:
Beauty and the Beast
Aladdin
Princess and the Frog
Tangled
Cinderella
Padme and Anakin
Ben and Rey
You get the idea.
One thing remains clear -- Williams did not expect this movie to end in tragedy. Just listen to the difference between “Farewell,” which marks Ben’s death and Episode III’s “The Birth of the Twins & Padme’s Destiny”. There is no hopeful conclusion to Padme’s Destiny. There isn’t a swell to a romantic heroic fanfare and major conclusion. That soundtrack clearly conveys the darkness of Revenge of the Sith.
The other clear thing about John Williams’s score is that it highlights the deviations D/LF made between the cut of the film Williams’s saw vs the cut that was released in theaters. There is no way that Williams would have PURPOSEFULLY not aligned his musical themes and elements with the wrong visuals from the movie. That is just not the type of composer he is.
And that, dear readers, is why the truth to the TROS ending lies in John William’s music.
I’m Cat and this has been my TED Talk.
EDIT
vimeo
Seriously. Farewell is a BIG KISS song and Reylo follows Beauty and the Beast troupes. FIGHT ME D/LF. Ben Solo was meant to live!

I have so many things to say, so many thoughts I'd like to share before I leave ...but I just can't hold this one back after being witnessed of this absurd, pathetic gashlighting operation on the Disney Lucasfilm's part.
I have never seen anything like that before...this is beyond disturbing. They probably know they made a6 HUGE mistake, something happened behind the scenes..and now they can't stop lying. The company showed its true colors. A circus.
So:
• Star Wars is a scifi fairy tale with lots of mythological elements and visual storytelling. ( until TROS, but later about this topic ) It had always been about love, hope and family. Romantic love had always been the core, the basic element of it. Also Humanity.
• The sequels were the ending chapter of the Skywalker Saga. Its story had always focused on the Skywalker family and their drama.
• Adam Driver's Ben Solo was the leading character of this trilogy alongside the heroine Rey.
• Ben Solo was "the skywalker", he was the co-protagonist, whose story supposed to be the reverse version of Anakin's tragedy as Adam Driver was told, and it was also pretty much obvious from the movie and the canon materials. • He was not a villain, he never meant to be one.
• Adam's character was a metaphor for adolescence with all its difficulties. He was coded as a child. As the next generation. The Seed. A young, 30 years old man. He was also an abuse victim, who had been suffering ever since he was a baby. His parents abandoned him. Their duty was more important to them than loving and parenting their own child. Horrible. • Ben Solo never meant to die. • That was the point. Ben Solo supposed to fulfill the salvation of the tormented Skywalker family by making a turn and living a happy, fulfilled life with his love, his soulmate by his side. That's what TFA, TLJ, Adam himself and all the canon materials set up for episode IX. Adam was also KK's first and only choice for the role of Han and Leia's child.
• The Last Jedi and all the established canob materials set up a happy ending for episode IX. Fact.
The "kiss" gaslighting, as it was just a a silly fanservice for a certain group of people and their romatic relationship was not important....whow...they are really losing it...they have the nerve
• The romance between self-made Rey Nobody, the heroine and Ben Solo Skywalker had been set up from the very begining. • Their romantic relationship was the HEART of the sequels.
• Two lonely souls who were set up as destinied lovers.
• Their unconditional love supposed to bring Balance to the Force, to the Galaxy.
• Their romance was established in The Last Jedi.
• The audience supported for them. Everyone loved it. The critiques praised them. The marketing, the official star wars accounts, reylo dolls...they were everywhere. They became mainstream after 2017. Their HEA was painfully obvious. Wasn't even a question.
• " reylo " is not a ship. Was not a ship. Their romance was the core of the sequels trilogy. Those people, the "reylos" were only following the story plot.
As for this horrible, absurd, pervert, disturbing, twisted OT fanfiction called TROS:
IT HAS noting to do to the previous movies. It's not the continuation of The Last Jedi. It's a sick mockery, a mess, a joke. JJ and the sociopath Chris T. literally rewrote and undone every established canon material, completely ignored episode 8 and all the things it set up for the ending. As if The Last Jedi never happened. It undone even those things what The Force Awakens built up. Only the names were the same. And now the team is about to retcon and rewrote every single thing in order to justify this shit. This garbage is not canon.
Do not let them making you question your own memory, perception, and sanity!

why ben solo deserved better
youtube
comments on youtube:
You may think Ben Solo did not deserve mercy, but let's all remember this is a FICTIONAL universe and fictional characters. It's ok to indulge in wishful thinking, even if Ben would not be received with welcome arms on Earth even after his redemption. Dealing with a complicated character like that and trying to find a way to give him a future in the story is hard, I will admit. It's hard to know where someone's role in society is after they've betrayed and murdered since our answer usually ends in their execution or incarceration. But imagine an ending where Ben Solo is willing to answer for his crimes, Rey contends for him, and the future of the galaxy has hope. What we were given was NOT hope. Ben Solo simply deserved a better ending than he was given. He wasn't a soulless monster like Palpatine. He had remorse. He hesitated. His anger was fueled by his mistreatment and feelings of abandonment from his family. Comment below and tell me why/why not Ben Solo deserved a better ending. Even if you don't agree, do you think his abrupt death was satisfying?
I agree with a lot of your points. He 100% should have survived and it doesn't make any sense to me that they killed him off. Ben should have been given a chance to live and atone, he could've spent the rest of his life being a better man, despite other people scorning him at first. Ben and Rey are so powerful - they are stronger together and could've helped so many people in the galaxy. Surely there would still be pockets of the First Order out there - or whole planets of innocent people still enslaved that need their help. ( I have to point out that it was never clarified how many people knew kylo ren was ben solo and its quite likely that only a small group knew ben was kylo ren so you wouldnt even need to consider the galaxy at wholes reaction for they could just claim kylo ren was dead while ben solo was still alive (people didnt know anakin was vader for years ) and poe in resistance reborn talked about ex imperials atoning for their actions so poe and the people who knew ben was kylo ren would be willing to accept ben coming back and atoning for his actions . no prison or exile he would ahve a happy ending with rey on naboo the place where anakin and padme would have raised luke and leia anidala being torn apart was the original sin ) ( I am sick and tired of redemption equals death it sends the message that if you mess up and go down the wrong path the only out is death that the most you can expect is finding a cause to die for its bs the notion that he had to die is bs
“the redemption = death bs doesnt give hope to anyone its like if you mess up you cant just make up for it
ben deserved better because in the 30 years he lived he wanst truly happy and calm until his last 20 seconds of his life”
Western story writers and directors are too set on the idea of redemption of villains through death, it's an unhealthy all too common message I don't agree with, Vader's sacrifice meant something because he saved his son, but what about Leia? What does her sacrifice mean? Why is the final shot just a lone Rey in the desert with a robot? I'll never understand these decisions, it just doesn't work.
The whole Rey replaces Ben in the Skywalker line is just disgusting. Ben was "bad" so he didn't deserve the name but Rey is perfectly "good" so she does? Kids, if you ever do anything bad watch out because your family will find a good kid, replace you, and act like you never existed. Love Disney for that message.
. There’s a clear reverse Anakin/Padme thing going on for me as is. I just think they could have gone for that full reversal, where Ben lives instead of dies like Anakin essentially did when he became Vader. And then I’m always reminded of how little Ani wanted to “free the slaves” ... and while he didn’t have to take that literal route, atonement, or working to break broken systems, would have been a wonderful close to that part of the story as well. I thought it would be nice to tie his and Finn’s stories together a little in that regard.
I don't think they ever understood what they had story wise or character wise. I don't think they ever knew what message these movies were supposed to have. TROS kept making strange story decisions without thinking through their implications. With regard to Ben Solo, they give us two fake deaths after multiple characters sacrificed themselves for him, then kill him off for real. That's the kind nonsense you find in the D-grade movies mocked on MST3K, not a Star Wars film. Worse yet, they offer the audience no catharsis for Ben's death. It happens suddenly; Rey had already given her "life force" to both the giant snake and Kylo/Ben and she's fine. So the audience doesn't expect Ben to die when he gives his "life force" to her. Then after his sudden death, he's not mourned. Rey barely reacts. He's not mentioned and his sacrifice is never discussed. Then we don't even see his Force ghost. The air got sucked out of the movie and it just ends with a thud. It's like if Titanic had ended with Rose saying, "Oh well, I guess I'll just marry Cal" and it's "The End."
Ben Solo definitely deserved better & I truly thought we would get a happily ever after, a reversal of Anakin & Padme’s fate. I also thought the stormtroopers would side with the Resistance & that the reason Leia’s allies didn’t respond at the end of TLJ was because most were disguised as stormtroopers & mingled among the First Order. 🤡 I think the Skywalker saga has ended but the Solo saga will continue. 🤞🏻 The majority of fans LOVE Kylo/Ben and that’s a fact. The general audience loved & rooted for him without ever knowing his heartbreaking backstory & that he had been targeted by Palpatine from conception. Let’s hope Disney/Lf has an ace up their sleeve.
I actually thought Ben was going to live because JJ kept marketing the film as being happy, uplifting, hopeful, and Ben's arc being "fun." In 2015 he called Star Wars a "fairytale." I had been waiting for Ben to reunite with his mother since 2015 & since 2017 to end up with Rey. Neither really happens because Ben dies, thus turning Star Wars into a tragedy that pretends it's not. We didn't even get a mother/som forceghost visual reunion as a "consolation prize". I was so sure we'd get an actual living redemption arc because I thought forgiveness and the healing of the family was their intention , but nope, just a complete annihilation of the Skywalker family. I left IX feeling depressed for all of Christmas break. ...And don't even get me started on the retcon of TLJ's Rey Nobody background setup and theme.Show less
You have to ask yourself this when thinking of Ben and Anakin. If Anakin fell to the dark side because he had an unhealthy selfish love for Padme but Ben rose from the dark side because he had a healthy selfless love for Rey. What message does it send to have both characters have the same fate when it comes to being with the women they love? (Split apart) What's the point of the saga if nothing anyone does means anything? JJ and Chris failed to ask themselves these important questions.
the theme of the original trilogy was love, hope, family, forgiveness, redemption
lucas described the star wars as a space fairy tale soap opera about love, family , hope forgiveness, redemption the skywalker saga is a family saga about the skywalker family killing off ben breaks that for it ends the saga in tragedy where every last skywalker has died the line has ended palpatine won bens abusers won
george lucas quote about story being a family-oriented fairytale of hope, love and redemption (not to mention he hates killing anyone unnecessarily bens death wasnt necessary and goes against star wars themes
George Lucas: *talks for forty years about fairy tales and HEAs and not wanting to kill characters
( this is why lucas didnt kill any of the main cast be they the trio or otherwise and chewbacc killing off ( killing off ben goes against that ( ben was a mc he was part of the narrative trio ( no matter how many antis try to claim otherwise and claim it was rey finn and poe when no ) or act like bendemption wasnt set up from day one. ( ben, rey, and finn were all main characters
on the comparison between benVader died as a middle-aged man in ill health with two living children who would carry on in the light after a golden period in his life where he was a prosperous jedi knight, Ben died a healthy 30-year-old with no family or good phase in his life, plus Vader's sacrifice was instrumental in his redemption while Ben's sacrifice happened after redemption out of narrative contrivance, they are not the same

Closing Arguments For Reylo
After it seems like we’ve spent a year anticipating this movie--from the film wrap in February to the teaser trailer in April to the Vanity Fair stuff in June to the D23 trailer at the end of August to the Road To TROS stuff to this final trailer and the onslaught of press for the film--we’re finally in the home stretch.
Who will live? Who will die? Will Reylo ride off into the sunset, a HEA at last for a Star Wars couple, will it end in tragedy or worse yet, will it end in a vague incoherent muddle? After all, no fairy tale ends with “they lived ambiguously ever after.”
I think we’re all going to be nervous sitting in the theater come Dec. 18-20 because whether we believe “leaks” or not, we’re just not going to know for sure until we see the film. I’m almost as nervous about their misusing/under-using Adam in this film as I am about the filmmakers blowing Reylo.
Yet of all of the sequel films, I’m the most confident about this one going in. This is the last film in this story and it’s not going to end with the message that the Skywalker family was somehow a mistake or some curse upon the galaxy that needed to be eliminated, while the few positive aspects about the Skywalkers are handed off to Rey because she’s such a nice girl. It’s not going to end like Romeo and Juliet. It’s not going to end without redemption for Kylo Ren/Ben Solo. The final chapter in the series is not only going to redeem him but everyone else who screwed up before him. It’s going to end this conflict and a Jedi Order 2.0 is going to arise. There will be a big party at the end. It will give you cavities and possibly blood sugar spikes.
As far as I’m concerned, Rey and Ben being together--in LOVE--is an integral part of that happy ending. Cinderella gets her prince. Beauty finds true love with the man who had been the Beast. Anastasia marries Christian Grey and has a baby. There’s just no such thing as a heroine who cheerfully ends up without her lover and in spite of what a lot of people think, Star Wars spends far more time utilizing traditional storytelling tropes (though in new ways) than subverting them. Like I wrote in my piece about gothic romances, the woman gets the man, the manor, and the money. Rey walks into TROS already with the metaphorical substitutes for the manor (the Falcon) and the money (the objects associated with the Skywalker family). She’s already in with her potential mother-in-law. All she needs is for Ben to show up to the metaphorical/literal wedding.
And everything is pointing toward that happening. I’m not saying TROS will end with Ben and Rey in a wedding or Rey waddling about preggers. Maybe it will end that way, maybe it won’t. But it will at minimum pair them together a la Han and Leia at the end of ROTJ.
First, let’s take on the only legitimate, in-universe obstacles to Rey and Ben being in a romantic relationship. No, I don’t mean that they could be related. What I do mean is that there are two things that would prohibit romance: one is obvious...no Bendemption. But I’m certain it is going to happen. The other is the old school Jedi prohibition against forming attachments, including romantic relationships. Many fans expect this deeply unpopular rule to be cast aside. But in the name of fairness, it bears pointing out that so far, this deeply unpopular rule hasn’t been cast aside in the movies. Sure there was a bit in the TLJ novel implying Luke wasn’t fond of this deeply unpopular rule but on the other hand, he lived it. Generalissima Leia did lots of other things but never became a Jedi herself. Maybe she was too busy. Or maybe she’d rather bonk Han to her heart’s content than become a space nun. There’s been some recent news that Leia was originally set to finally take up the Jedi mantle in the last ST film, something that obviously changed after Carrie’s passing in 2016. Note that this would have been after Leia had become a widow. Several months ago I’d listened to a podcast containing an interview with former Lucasfilm employee J.W. Rinzler. He revealed that while the expanded universe was allowed to go nuts with Jedi romances and marriages, Lucas kept grumbling that “Jedi aren’t supposed to marry!” He disliked Mara Jade partially for this reason.
Of every argument against Reylo happening that is the one that no one seems to take seriously yet it’s far more likely to be an issue than a sudden revelation of Rey Skywalker-Solo. The question is were Chris Terrio and J.J. Abrams willing to say, “Hey George, your rule sucks so we’re gonna throw it out” to Lucas’s eternal annoyance? Or, is the coupling of Rey and Ben supposed to have happened all along, even in Lucas’s drafts? Are Rey and Ben a glaring exception to the rule?
My argument is that they are going to be an exception. Reylo is not just about hot people hooking up, it’s about mystical forces coming together in a union that will bring the peace and stability that has evaded the galaxy since the Clone Wars. In other words, it’s a divine marriage. Ben and Rey are not ordinary Force users. They are extraordinary among the extraordinary. We already know Ben’s tremendous raw power comes from being literally the great-grandson of the Force itself. Rey I’m sure is something very similar, a demigoddess of sorts. Ben and Rey will demonstrate one can love deeply without it corrupting into selfishness, possessiveness, obsession, and everything else that led Anakin into believing killing his comrades to save Padmé was a really good idea.
Okay, let’s look at some hard evidence.
What’s the one word that keeps coming up over and over again with Rey and Kylo/Ben?
Intimacy.
Or some variation thereof:
“At the premiere I heard somebody in the balcony say, “Yesssss!” You can see Adam was training hardcore throughout the whole process. It’s fun but it also has a specific purpose, which is the increasing feeling of uncomfortable intimacy. That was sticking with the theme of trying to give Rey the hardest thing you could possibly give her, which would be unavoidable intimate conversation with this person that she wants to just hate. This was just one more way of upping that ante.”--Rian Johnson, Los Angeles Times, December 18, 2017
“It’s all about those Force connection scenes. The keyword being intimacy. And the idea that this was a way to just, why not step that up?(...)And so it was just another way of kind of disrobing Kylo literally and figuratively a little bit more, and pushing that sense of these conversations becoming increasingly more intimate.”--Rian Johnson, People magazine Dec. 23, 2017
“They just had this horrific fight, but Rian wanted this incredible intimacy and this cascading, twinkling waterfall of sparks from the fight before.”--Ben Morris, ILM Visual Effects Supervisor, Collider Dec. 25, 2017
“Even to the point where Adam flew to Ireland just to be off camera for Daisy’s stuff, which was essential because they’re such intimate conversations.”--Rian Johnson, People magazine Jan. 6, 2018
“That came about first and foremost from wanting a sense of intimacy”--Rian Johnson, Force of Sound Documentary Feb. 20, 2018
“And have it, you’re in their heads with just that intimacy.”--Matthew Wood, Supervising Sound Editor, Skywalker Sound Feb. 20, 2018
“Having a big sound there just didn’t have the intimacy that the scene demanded. It can be so hard to get the balance right to where the audience is feeling the same thing as the characters.”--Michael Semanic, Re-recording mixer Skywalker Sound, Postperspective Feb. 21, 2018
“But we fall back on romance because it's the best analogue we have. Rey and Kylo's relationship is more intimate than that. They've literally been in each other's minds. Rey's seen his deepest fears; he's seen the past she's buried. None of us have had that experience.”
“My point is romance may not be the endpoint of that. (Though it may be.) The analogue may be misleading, because it's an analogue. Their connection is deeper and stranger and far more complicated. I think TFA/TLJ covers those complications wonderfully, with Ep IX promising more.”--Jason Fry on Twitter Nov. 26, 2018
“At times it’s more intimate, sometimes less intimate.”--Adam Driver, Entertainment Weekly, December 2019
Relationships that are intimate aren’t necessarily romantic or sexual in nature but in modern parlance, it’s often used as a euphemism for a romantic or sexual relationship, or for sex itself i.e. “Tyler and Kaitlyn weren’t intimate until they got married.” Because of that, it would be hella weird if they described a familial or friendly relationship in this way. If I didn’t want my audience to believe there’s anything that could possibly be sexual happening between my characters--especially between an eligible attractive man and an eligible attractive woman--I would avoid using the term “intimate.”
If that doesn’t sell it for you, consider these statements:
“It’s the closest thing we’ll ever get to a sex scene in Star Wars”--Rian Johnson re the hand touch in TLJ. (Who the hell says that about cousins? Or just friends?)
“it is certainly true there is a romantic drama...”--Rian Johnson, some Japanese interview from 2017. (By the way this was misquoted into stating there was no romance in TLJ at all.)
“I (Rian) disagreed with John (Williams) twice regarding the score. For example, there's a scene where Kylo Ren and Rey touch hands, before they are interrupted by Luke Skywalker. When John wrote the score (for this scene), he was very protective of Rey's character, exactly as is Luke. Kylo ('s presence) was menacing, musically speaking. It's a valid point of view, but I didn't think of the scene like that. I wanted it to stay on Rey's POV: I wanted that we could believe in this romance.”--Rian Johnson, Classica magazine April 25, 2019 (Note: this is an interview from English to French then translated here and here back to English but the word “romance” is the same in both languages.)
The above statements and various others we’ve all seen over the years are helpful to explain what we’ve seen in the past two films: they’re building toward something.
On one level, the filmmakers are building toward another alliance between our space children, like what they had in TLJ. It’s obvious that they will need to team up to defeat Palpatine because who else could? It’s also obvious that they are key to the Force being in balance. There has been interesting speculation on Twitter about how those forces will come together and the symbolism of a marriage by uniting mystical objects.
But being Force buddies in a tag team match against Palpatine isn’t quite high enough stakes. Nor is “might makes right” the message of Star Wars. These two have to be willing to fight for each other, to the death if necessary. They have to have something to live for as well. They have to have the secret sauce that Darth Sidious doesn’t have. And what I’m talking about is love. Not just the compassionate love of agape (that’s what Anakin was talking about in AOTC but he meant it differently of course) or the friendship love of philia but also the powerful, creative love of eros. It’s basically what was happening in the throne room scene in TLJ. They were fighting for each other and the future they saw when they touched hands. Come on, nobody is going to do any of that just to find an apprentice or to convince someone to join an insurrection you barely spent any time with yourself.
A divine marriage between the two most powerful Force users will end the war and herald in a new age. Either they are a new incarnation of the Prime Jedi or they will become the mother and father to this incarnation.
Plus they will kiss and get in a lot of nookie. The end.

I am devastated. Shocked. Grief stricken. Angry. Helpless. I always knew there was a chance of this happening; I had zero doubt Reylo would come to fruition. I believed from the first that it would. I was confident in that much. But I had a secret fear that they would kill off Ben to appease the fanbase that felt he had to die for his ‘sins’. It crossed my mind only recently that this might happen. But I pushed it to the far corners of my mind because hey, it’s a fairytale set in space. It’s Disney. And they always believe in second chances and HEA. Good grief; I’m a grown woman with delusions of such things...especially when a conglomerate holds the reins in achieving such a thing. I haven't see TROS yet; I actually had taken the day off tomorrow to make a day of it and see the movie by myself before I see it with my husband. But now...I will not. I barely want to even see it at all. I guess I will; I need closure. But honestly, I can’t stop crying. That is embarrassing to admit. Me... a married, professional, grown woman weeping like a baby over the death of a fictitious character. I have MUCH to say on that, and I will once I see the film. For now, I just want to get through the holiday week with my heart intact. I cannot fathom that they did this to us right before Christmas/Hanukkah, Kwanza, etc. What kind of gift of merriment is this supposed to be, anyway? This has totally ruined my holiday. Honestly, ruined it. I’ve cried so much in the last two days, I feel like a death has occurred in my family. I’m sorry to vent; I just needed to. And I know my Reylo family understands. Thanks for listening. x

The weird thing is Soule said that TROS was a HEA for the heroes but also made a snide comment like “do you think Rey will have a happy ending?” (Paraphrasing) so he thinks TROS is like a ROTJ-ish happy ending (which LMAO) but it’s a temporary one and Rey’s probably going to die in her middle age sacrificing herself or undergoing some other misery like the OT trio did. And, if that’s “normal” for SW now, Idk how they can claim it’s a hopeful or happy franchise
Yeah, I didn’t listen to the full interview, but that makes sense. Jedi are supposed to be so self-sacrificing, which is an idea I don’t mind if it’s for a good purpose. But the way the Jedi are portrayed as being incapable of finding even momentary joy is so ... ugh. I’m choosing to interpret it as Soule confirming that Rey is not happy without Ben, which is ... true. Not that I wouldn’t want her to find happiness if she were ... real, but she had it, and they chose to avoid giving it to her.

This post is not spoiler free. Its tagged but I don’t really give a shit anymore. I was spoiled and I am actually happy about it. my thoughts on Tros.
My fellow reylos. So here is my last post before I’ll come back tomorrow. I have another 6 hrs before I see the movie. But before I do I need to release some of my thoughts.
I think I will find some scenes in this movie i am going to enjoy. I am not going to hate all of it. In general I am a very positive person so I think it wont kill me.
BUT here comes the big BUT. What the hell is wrong with American scripts/movies/shows? (this has nothing to do with American people but with the American film industry. Don’t get me wrong). What is this subvert expectations? What is this bittersweet shit NO ONE really wants to see? Did they not learn from their mistakes? I used to say you cannot compare SW with GOT but I was wrong. The premise yes is different, but the outcome of storytelling is still the same.
I loved GOT with all my heart. It was cruel at most times but still I had some hope that in the end everything will come to conclusion and it will not leave me totally frustrated. I didn’t expect an HEA at all but something better than the last season. I was about buying merch, I was about buying all the seasons, but I ended up buying NOTHING. This show literally doesn’t exist for me anymore. I erased it completely bc they screwed it up. Let’s face it they did. And I was not the only one boycotting everything post season 8. HBO lost revenue. Every company selling merch lost revenue. They did. And still we see the same storytelling style yet again.
What’s wrong with happy endings? Why do all of these big Hollywood companies think we want this cruelty? I don’t. and from what I read, listen and see the majority of people don’t. especially women. I am so sick that they use us, tease us but in the end, they don’t give us what we deserve. I am sick of it. The point of diving into fantasy is to forget about the world around you. The world alone is tough enough and I don’t want to be haunted by that when I watch fiction. That’s the whole point of fiction.
SW is about HOPE, always was, always should have been. JJ obviously missed the point. HE DID!
NO ONE wanted Rey to end up where she started. NO ONE. NO ONE wanted the most popular character to die like this. if you kill him then c’mon bring him at least back as a force ghost, bc that leaves a door open and it gives people hope. What the hell is wrong with JJ? Reys ending is the most ridiculous end of all times. And don’t get me started with Leia. Leia never had any luck in her entire life. And this is how it all ends for her? Not reuniting with her son? nope with whatever rey is to her. I have no words for that. this is bad storytelling. Period. There is nothing to debate about. It leaves me without any emotion.
I loved the idea of rey being nobody (if the leaks are true and she is a palpatine). That would have been the most beautiful message to all the young girls (and boys) out there that no matter where you come from you can become whomever you want to, and you can end up being strong and loved. But nope. She falls in love, she never finds her belonging bc ben is gone and ends up where she started with a fucking droid, on a dead planet. What message is that? Girl whatever you do in your life you end up unhappy and alone and some dudes who are not related to you say goodbye in a sunset. Praise the lord.
Ben Solo dies. For love. Which is a grand gesture right there and it makes his redemption arc for the GA plausible. BUT not for SW fans. And the fanbase is huge. He was the last skywalker. He was a victim. He was abused. He was the hero after all. And they fucking kill him. If you kill him JJ, make him a fucking force ghost so he can be with his family. What message do they deliver here? That no matter what you do, no matter what happens in your life.. if you are a victim and you do something bad you have to sacrifice yourself in order to get redemption. WTF how am I supposed to tell my kids that the story is just plain dumb? I am (I posted that on my blog) a teenager of abuse and I could see so much of myself in Ben Solo. Its breaking my heart.
And what about the rest? NOT important. Finn? Who? Rose? Who? Poe? Who?
So, what is the conclusion of this story? That the Dark side always wins. Palpatine wins again. That’s it that the story. Anything that came before the Sequels is pointless now. Sorry to say that but it is actually. And the only reason is because they leave us without any hope. That’s the key to SW.
And please don’t tell me its fiction, calm down its not real. Yes, that is true, and my life goes on and I will survive it but its 42 years (for me a bit less) of a story that accompanied families and friends. Fiction has an impact on you whether you like it or not. I read books which I still think about because they touched me so deeply. Same applies to movies. MEDIA in general is important and has a huge impact on any of us. It influences young children and teenagers quite a lot actually.
So what do I learn from that disappointment? A lot. I will, and I am very serious about it, never invest so much energy on something that I do not know the end of ever again. I will not invest my money on anything SW unless its fan made. I want to know upfront if my expectations are met or not. I am 39, I grew up with Happy endings. I am not prepared for this new era of evil storytellers and I don’t want to ever get used to it.
I want us Anti or not anti, reysky or reyfinn, reypoe, stormpilot (whatever the shipnames are.. I lost track lol) to express our feelings and let them know that we are not happy with it bc if we don’t nothing is ever going to change. We have a voice and we should use it. Use twitter, use insta, use FB, use change.org to start a petition if you feel the need to. Don’t be afraid we all feel it too.
Last but not least… we Reylos were right all along. Reylo is canon. And that’s the tea. The last one until the movie comes out on dvd and I can see your beautiful gifs. This fandom brought so many talented people together like I have never seen before. Never forget without us there is no them. So use this power.
Before I forget. Rian Johnson is a genius. The TLJ is a beautiful movie.
This is my pre-watch Tros Post and I will make another afterwards but after all the spoilers now I am pretty much convinced that its all true. It won’t change my opinion on the story telling, that remains a shit show but it might change my view on the details.

What did Daisy R mean when she said they "mined [the Rey and Kylo relationship] some more" in TROS? There was literally no development between them? No depth? They just fought for two hours?
She declared her love for him (in a roundabout way, but “I wanted to take Ben’s hand” is a love declaration), he gave his life for her, they kissed on the lips. That’s a LOT of development, even if badly written, even more so if you consider that a part of the audience was STILL debating if their interactions were romantic or not post TLJ.
-
Why do you think JJ had Reylo "happen" in TROS anyway despite TROS pushing the Resistance Fam idea and making her relationships with Luke and Leia more important? Wouldn't it be easier to sell the ending and have less unfortunate implications if Rey and Ben didn't have a romantic dimension to their dynamic at all? They already ignored TLJ so much and ignored the Reylo dev in TLJ, why not just scrap it as a romance if Rey's family is the Resistance and Ben isn't part of her HEA?
I wonder why JJ didn’t make F/R canon in TROS? Or went with canon Reylo instead of celibate Rey? Cause if you asked me the majority of TROS lines up with many F/R “retconning TLJ” canons (Rose is irrelevant and her romance with Finn is retconned, Finn has something to confess to Rey which may be romantic feelings, Kylo Ben is a 2dimensional villain for whom Rey feels nothing but animosity) but it takes a hard right turn at the end of the Death Star fight and becomes Reylo
Why, indeed? *laughs*
Because romantic Reylo wasn’t an original Rian Johnson concept like all the other stuff that JJ retconned. I’m still firmly convinced it was one of the few things they (sort of) figured since the get go, and JJ Abrams was involved in those early plans.
Maybe it was always meant to end tragically, okay, or whatever they think this ending feels like: clearly they believe they served us an *overall* happy ending---hey, they found a way to give Rey her true love kiss while also sparing her from the horrible burden of growing into adulthood and having an actual boyfriend, I bet this was supposed to feel like a win-win in their plans! Or maybe they felt there was a big merit in the idea of Rey being Anakin’s inverse in the sense that she learns to love and let go instead of being consumed by pain and rage at the loss of her beloved, idk, idk, but it was always meant to happen, one way or another---SW doesn’t do subtle nuance and “grey” relationships well (there’s family, friendship, mentor/student, sworn enemies and romance, and the main character dynamics generally fall in at least one of these boxes), Ben and Rey have been written since the get go as two polar opposites attracting each other like magnets, there was an idea of the Force pushing them together as early as in TFA, etc. There’s always a central romance in these movies, JJ obviously didn’t give a rat’s ass about Finnrose, and if he cared about Finnrey as more than a classic main girl + funny best friend bait and switch he could have made it happen. He didn’t because Belligerently Romantic Reylo was his baby just as Rey’s buns or Kylo’s mask were. That’s why he didn’t retcon it although it was entirely in his power to do so, he simply found a way to replace Rian’s version of Reylo with HIS:
Anonymous said:
“when he realized he didn’t have enough time to make Rey and Kylo fall for each other the way he envisioned them to fall for each other” He probably envisioned them to fall for each other in the way many Reylos after TFA did: Kylo would be angry at Rey after TFA, and they would duel while exchanging barbs until something happened to make them develop sympathy for each other. He probably had something like the Rey-heals-Ben moment planned as their *first* moment of understanding

OH MY GOD, PEEPS.
So, after my little experiment with playing around with the TROS kiss scene. I started to wonder about whether or not my cut of the kiss would interfere with the soundtrack of the following “The Hero Returns” scene. Out of curiosity, I trimmed my copy of TROS to the beginning of the collapse of the star destroyers that begins right after the Big Kiss™ scene and placed the track “Reunion” under it. I didn’t touch anything else. No other cuts were made.
And guess what worked perfectly?
Not only does it work, but the scenes now stylistically match the endings of the other movies….
Please, just try to convince me that this cut of the movie matched with “Reunion” doesn’t just feel right? Doesn’t it feel like Star Wars?
ALSO: When you pair my cut of “Farewell” with my modification of “Reunion,” guess what else starts to make sense? Why is Rey not sad during the Reunion? Because she knows Ben has survived. It would also make sense why he isn’t with her. It’s not like the supreme leader can waltz into the rebel base, even if he’s Ben Solo now. They will be reunited on the “New Home!”
John Williams knows what is up.

I'm trying to stay positive even though we had a clusterf*ck of and ending to a magnanimous saga. It has been difficult to tell you the truth. I won't let this poor excuse of a movie diminish my love for Ben Solo. I see myself in this character. I've gone through so much sh*t in my life and have managed to overcome obstacles w/out family support. I wanted a HEA for him and feel robbed. It doesn't mean I don't deserve one. I may need to fight w/teeth and nails for it. #BenSoloDeservesBetter
Hey Nonnie!
I completely agree!! It hurts even worse when you’ve been following the story from the beginning. I feel dumb for putting as much faith in JJ as I did because TFA was so wonderful! But I’m starting to think it was due to his partner doing 90% of the hard work. I was completely unaware of Terrio’s reputation prior to seeing a couple of his films (against my will) but I’m fully convinced this disaster of a film is ALL Terrio. JJ doesn’t have the mental capacity to be that cruel and conniving, he’s just stupid. There is a difference.
I connected with Ben when I saw TFA and even more so when I saw TLJ. I don’t have family support either (outside of found family) but I’m proud of being able to get through a lifetime of shit. Yes, he does deserve a HEA with his wife. Hello, it’s the formula of a Disney fairytale?! Everyone deserves a HEA.
At this point, we have fanfiction, and a plethora of amazing Reylo writers. Hoping that they all keep their stories posted at Ao3 since a few are starting to delete their entire collection without any warning. While we may never see Ben Solo onscreen anymore, personally, I believe that canon ended with TLJ. Reason being is that TROS was made with the fanboys and antis in mind only. Terrio didn’t give one shit about Reylos or the general audience and made that venomously clear in his press interviews after the film when people were struggling to figure out how his mind worked in allegedly honoring the previous films and wrapping them all in a pretty bow, as was supposed to be done to close out such a long running beloved franchise. Not to mention, a majority of fans of the sequels are children, who many parents reported were traumatized in the theater and afterward. Disney should be ashamed for that alone.
I wouldn’t blame Adam or Daisy if they never signed another contract with Disney after the way they were disrespected, Adam especially. Let’s not even go into how Rian was disrespected. Disney doesn’t care about SW or the fans, only the money they take in.

I’ve seen @mnemehoshiko do this, and I think it’s a great idea!
To the person who has been assigned to write for me in the @reylofanfictionanthology “FOR ONE IS BOTH AND BOTH ARE ONE IN LOVE“ exchange:
Thank you for taking the time for writing something for me.
Should you don’t know me from one of the places I usually hang out on, and have no idea how I tick, well, this post is supposed to give you a few pointers.
I’m willing to read nearly everything, as long as no non-con elements are included, but deep in my heart I’m a sucker for happy endings and am a hopeless romantic, who believes in the good in people. And I love humor.
I’m happy with every rating you decide to write for, whether you include smut or not. Should you decide to write smut, please don’t include heavy BDSM or breathplay, as that is not my cake. Apart from that all is fair game, as long as enthusiastic consent is given by both parties.
I’m really a sucker for certain tropes, such as fake marriage / fake dating / there’s only one bed! / soulmates / building a relationship via letters or texting before actual meeting / exes getting together again – all with a good dose of mutual pining and thirsting over each other. While I have read the occasional ABO fic, I’m not a huge fan of the trope, except when it explores the societal impact of the designations.
I’d be happy with any AU you choose, be it modern, or fantasy, or historical. It doesn’t have to be a canon-adjacent story. If it is canon adjacent, you can decide whether you ignore TROS altogether, or just include certain elements.
When I’m not reading fanfiction – shocking, but yes I do read other stuff as well – I read either romance, fantasy or crime stories. I love Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings and all things Jane Austen (my favorite being Persuasion, closely followed by Sense and Sensibility).
Among the last shows I’ve binged were The Mandalorian, Lucifer, The Fall (well that one doesn’t lend itself to a HEA; the reason I loved it was Gillian Anderson as the lead investigator) and the Good Girl’s Revolt.
Please feel free to use my prompts as guidelines only.
Happy writing!

The Old Crone Chronicles was supposed to have two chapters, but then i decided it works as oneshot with an open ending (despite the fact that the core idea for that fic kinda deserves to become a decent, long, post-tros-fix-it that will finally reunite Ben and Rey... But yeah, i don’t have both skill and patientce to write sth like that)
But now, it seems that it will end up 3 chapters total with a little HEA.
I admit i didn’t expect coming up with new chapter titles to guide me through the plot... And yet here we are. Maybe not today, not tomorrow... But i will someday complete this fic.

@painted-in-ink I've seen a few Terrio films prior to this and wish I could get those hours of my life back (even the crazies I saw them with said they were the best films in franchise history 😳 ) I thought his writing then was appalling, so it didn't make sense to me that people were (and still do) completely ignoring HIS bad writing of the final installment. JJ didn't write that trash because he doesn't have enough brains or hatred to follow through. He might be jealous of Rian but he doesn't have what it takes to actually pull off a revenge act, being all bark and no bite. JJ had a script with George Lucas that we will never know what that was. I don't buy Terrio's story for a second that there was a new story/script everyday. That is not how you make a film on a budget that could support a large country. Terrio does this without batting an eye and you don't even have to be a fan of whatever franchise he's worked on to know you don't do shit like that.
You could also tell how Terrio was so vile to reporters trying to figure out what happened with TROS that he had no love whatsoever for the SW franchise. Why Disney hired him, when they had to know his prior resume, will remain the world's biggest mystery. But again, JJ for all his faults and stupidity, was Terrio's puppet, not the mastermind. I don't like JJ's decision more than anyone else, but he's not the one to blame in this situation. They all knew Ben Solo was supposed to have a HEA (which I got the strong impression actually was filmed and the crappy editing tried to cover up part of it) but Terrio ruined it, because he's an anti catering to the antis who didn't even want Ben killed. Terrio went on to say in interviews that not only did Ben not belong in the sequels, but anyone who didn't get his vision was stupid. 🙄 More like he and his buddies don't understand or care about the values of SW.
I would love to see Terrio blacklisted after the damage he's done to films in general. The writers of GOT can't get jobs now for less.
I wouldn't be surprised in the least if Terrio was behind all the last second ADR and shitty edits and the appalling treatment they put Adam through.
It seems the negative comments about TROS have come as a shock to the cast and crew because they were genuinely convinced they had made a good film by erasing TLJ.
I think it also might have come from the fact that it seemed like everything was constantly changing because of JJ and CT’s constant radical changes to the script, so nobody actually knew what movie ended up being released. Except JJ’s editors seem like a special brand of tone-deaf and embarrassing.
