A rare party switch in the Missouri House could be in the offing after one Republican on Wednesday wasn’t allowed to speak against a GOP plan to restrict gender-affirming care for minors.

Rep. Chris Sander, R-Lone Jack, one of two openly gay Republicans in the Legislature, said Wednesday that local, state and national Republicans needed to decide whether gay and transgender Republicans were welcome.

“If they want to tell all Republicans who are gay to get out and go to the Democrat Party, they just need to do that,” Sander, a 2001 graduate of Hazelwood West High School in St. Louis County, told the Post-Dispatch.

Sander was one of three Republicans to vote against the restrictions, which are headed to Gov. Mike Parson, a Republican, for his consideration.

House Majority Leader Jonathan Patterson, R-Lee’s Summit, and Rep. Gary Bonacker, R-House Springs, also broke with their party to vote with Democrats against the ban.

Sander, who said he is Republican committeeman for the Van Buren Township in Jackson County, said he planned to speak at the county party’s May 22 meeting.

Members of the county GOP have tried to censure Sander for filing a resolution that would overturn Missouri’s constitutional ban on same-sex marriage, which was nullified by a 2015 Supreme Court decision.

“I’m going to rail against them and I’m going to say how I think it should be, and if they don’t like it, they can just get rid of me, and if that happens then I’ll be an independent or a Democrat,” Sander said, adding he might also consider becoming a Libertarian if he left the GOP.

“If they kick me off that (Jackson County GOP) committee, I will not be a Republican,” Sander said.

If Sander were to quit the GOP, he would join a short list of other House members over the past decade to leave their political party.

In 2015, then-Rep. Keith English, a Florissant Democrat, said he was leaving the Democratic Party to become an independent.

“This is no longer the Democrat Party of Bill Clinton or John F Kennedy. I’m leaving the party because I love my state,” English said at the time.

English’s decision to ditch the Democrats followed another Democratic defection a day after the 2014 midterms.

Then-Rep. Linda Black, who had been a Democrat from Desloge, switched to the Republican Party a day after the election after she ran unopposed.

Her St. Francois County district had a long history of electing Democrats but voters there have bolted to the Republicans in recent election cycles.

Sander’s eastern Jackson County 33rd District is roughly 58% Republican and 39% Democrat, according to an analysis of the district’s partisan makeup.

“I can see myself winning an election as a Republican or a Democrat or an independent,” he said.

Republicans controlled 117 seats in the House in 2015 following Black’s switch.

The GOP now controls 111 seats despite continuing to hold a two-thirds majority.

Democrats hold 51 seats following Democratic Rep. Rasheen Aldridge’s resignation this year to join the St. Louis Board of Aldermen. Parson has not called a special election to replace him.

11. what’s something neat you’ve learned while doing research for something you were writing? also, how much do you worry about doing research in general?

Hmm lemme think. Recently I did some math and realized that, according to D&D, a giant eagle’s flight speed is NINE MILES PER HOUR, because D&D is not written by people who know things. For reference, a golden eagle soars at an average of 120 mph while hunting, which is 528 ft/turn as movement, or 1,056 ft with the Dash action. A raven’s average flight speed is 25 mph, which means their movement speed should be 111 ft/round (222 with Dash). That’s over twice the D&D statblock’s movement speed (50).

Players, harass your DMs into giving your familiars a flight speed of 110 today! Flight is really goddamn fast! Surely there will be no repercussions to this, like a cockatrice pulling up on your ass from 200′ away in a single turn

I worry an awful damn lot about research—or, more accurately, I am very damn concerned with it, because I value accuracy and verisimilitude highly, and also I have a fairly bad case of OCD.* I once spent a week researching the movements and events of the African Front in WWII for a single scene in a Stucky fic I ended up not finishing. That sort of thing. My longer fics should come with a bibliography.

"Neopronouna don't hurt anybody in real life" Is a statement I agree with, which made it even more terrifying when it in fact started to hurt people in real life.

Socialstyrelsen (I'll shorten it to ST) is the government body that dictates the Swedish transgender healthcare. Earlier this month, they released their 111-page long document about how to handle transgender teens. Even though I am not a teen anymore and am not affected by this, a huge amount of transgender individuals in Sweden will.

The current waiting times are 3+ years long and that is for a first appointment.

I had to read that document unfortunately and something they mentioned was neopronouns. Some of them being xe,zir, eym and princeself. I hate to say it but for the people in Sweden that dictate our lives this is proof that we should not be yaken seriously. The neopronouns could have been the final straw that made them change the rules so that no minor can get hormones without partaking in a scientific study which never happens. These teenagers will not be offered any help in form of puberty blockers either. I fucking hate how neopronouns managed to hurt us because they're fine, they really are.

Attorney General Ken Paxton Sues Biden Administration for Unlawfully Using Title IX to Mandate Radical Gender Ideology, Violating Constitution and Putting Women At Risk

AUSTIN – Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has sued to stop an unlawful federal rule issued by the Biden Administration that destroys protections for women in educational institutions by mandating compliance with radical gender ideology.

The Department of Education’s new regulatory requirements under Title IX expand the definition of “sex” to include one’s self-professed “gender identity.” Title IX is a civil rights law granting protections to women by prohibiting discrimination on the basis of sex in any educational program that receives federal money, including K-12 schools, colleges, and universities. The new rule contorts these protections for women by forcing schools to accommodate the wishes of men claiming to identify as women (or “transgender”) to enter female-only spaces and join female-only organizations. This would force schools to permit biological males to use female restrooms and lockers. If schools refused, federal funding would be withheld.

While the Biden Administration initially attempted to implement this agenda through informal agency guidance, the Department of Education has now turned to formally amending the Code of Federal Regulations. This rule violates existing federal law, ignores the Constitution, and denies women the protections that Title IX was intended to afford them. The Biden Administration has exceeded its authority and radically distorted the meaning intended by Congress when the law was made. Further, the changes would fundamentally transform the educational atmosphere of publicly funded educational institutions, forcing communities to capitulate to unscientific gender ideology and putting girls and women at risk in K-12 schools and on college campuses.

In addition, the new regulations promise to repeat the Department’s ill-advised 2011 Dear Colleague Letter, which had a detrimental impact on publicly funded education across the country, including in Texas. This rule walks back many of the safeguards promulgated by the Trump Administration to ensure that students accused of harassment have access to a fair hearing. At the same time, the Biden Administration redefines “harassment” to include constitutionally protected activity, such as using biologically accurate pronouns.

“Texas will not allow Joe Biden to rewrite Title IX at whim, destroying legal protections for women in furtherance of his radical obsession with gender ideology,” said Attorney General Paxton. “This attempt to subvert federal law is plainly illegal, undemocratic, and divorced from reality. Texas will always take the lead to oppose Biden’s extremist, destructive policies that put women at risk.”

America First Legal is serving as co-counsel. AFL President Stephen Miller said: “America First Legal is honored to stand with the great Ken Paxton and the State of Texas in filing this emergency lawsuit to stop Biden’s war on women. Biden’s new Title IX regulation is a vile obscenity: it forces women and girls to share locker rooms and restrooms with men. It forces them to call a he, a she, and to pretend in every way that a man is a woman, humiliating, degrading, and erasing women. This is an abomination, and as outside counsel for Texas we will battle this regulation in court with all the legal fight we can bring. It must be defeated for the sake of American women and for the sake of our daughters.”

Previously, Texas sued the Biden Administration over initial guidance documents that attempted to force the same policies. Attorney General Paxton issued a comment letter when the federal rule redefining sex based on “gender identity” and “sexual orientation” rather than objective reproductive biology was first proposed.
