The Maltese Falcon by Dashiell Hammett

I have been meaning to read this one for a while now, I really enjoy other hardboiled detective fiction like Raymond Chandler's Philip Marlowe novels, so I'm sure I'll like this as well. Alice Cooper named his son Dashiell (Dash) after this author, and I trust his judgement on many things.

Red Rabbit by Alex Grecian

A recommendation from my husband, who usually enjoys dry stoic tomes regarding the history of banking and capitalism, so I'm rather intrigued he loved this kind of fiction so much! This one is a fantasy/horror western, and as an avid enjoyer of all these things I am excited to read about them all together. The reviews mention True Grit, and Larry McMurtry, as well as demons, ghosts, and a witch hunter, and so I am already sold.

The Forgotten Writings of Bram Stoker

I picked this one up at a book fair, because how could I not? I look forward to more dark gothic fiction... my literal life blood.

Katniss is such an unreliable narrator. She says "Then something unexpected happens. At least, I don't expect it because I don't think of District 12 as a place that cares about me" girl you deliver strawberries to the Mayor, you hunt and trade for the district, when you fell at Prim being chosen someone caught you, when you went to Prim people parted for you, when you volunteered EVERYONE stopped. Idk how to tell you but I think you're a pillar of the community.

Trama

Recensione

Non puoi immaginare qualcosa che non esiste senza prendere spunto da ciò che è esiste. Ed è quello che ha fatto Charlotte Julie Bright nella Trilogia del Nerva.

Come si evince dal titolo, la Trilogia del Nerva sono tre libri in uno solo, nota positiva per la curiosità di un lettore che vuole sapere tutto fin da subito, senza dover aspettare l'uscita del nuovo volume. Una buona scelta anche dal punto di vista narrativo: i tre libri sono l'uno il diretto seguito dell'altro, ma non vi sono salti temporali tra l'uno e l'altro, un po' come i differenti atti di un'opera teatrale.

Fin dalle prime battute dell'aletta anteriore del libro e nei quarti di copertina, si può comprendere come il suo target sia un pubblico young adult, interessato sì alla fantascienza e al fantasy, ma anche alla scienza stessa e ai misteri da risolvere.

È un libro caldamente consigliato a chi ama leggere di civiltà future — dispotiche o meno, spaziali o terrestri — di ricerca scientifica e vita accademica, di nemici che non sono nemici — ma solo persone con un punto di vista differente — e di misteri da risolvere. In particolare, è consigliato a chi ha letto e amato i cicli:

Chosen Ones di Veronica Roth;

The 100 di Kass Morgan;

Trilogia dell'Area X di Jeff Vandermeer;

Il primo libro ti introduce alla protagonista e al suo mondo, alle scelte che i suoi genitori e suo zio hanno fatto per tenerla al sicuro, e a quelle che la stessa Anna compie. Ti introduce alle vecchie e alle nuove conoscenze di Anna, e ti accompagna nel suo viaggio nello spazio siderale, in cui deve nascondere la sua identità e, soprattutto, l'energia — il Nerva — che porta dentro che, se in mani sbagliate, può diventare l'arma letale in grado di distruggere tutto il Circolo Galattico Definito.

Il secondo libro ti fa capire ancora di più che cos'è il Nerva — un'energia che pare quasi magia per quanto è straordinaria — e ti accompagna ancora di più in quello che è il Circolo Galattico Definito, con la sua organizzazione e politica. Ma ti fa anche scoprire di più sul motivo che ha spinto gli esseri umani a intraprendere una società spaziale, a partire da un pianeta — la Terra — apparentemente diventato inospitale. Eppure, qualcuno ancora vive sulla Terra, e sembra arrabbiato di essere stato abbandonato — come sono arrabbiati i popoli che si sono creati a partire dall'esilio su Qazartha e Dellion.

Il terzo libro ti fa immergere nella presa di coscienza di Anna, da sempre considerata solamente come arma segreta del Circolo Galattico Definito e mira principale di Goran, esplorando maggiormente sia le innumerevoli potenzialità del Nerva sia le due fazioni — quella dei goriani e quella della Difesa — che, come in una società del mondo reale, hanno al loro interno individui con correnti di pensiero differenti, che si ritrovano a combatte con o contro Goran per motivi diversi.

Il romanzo si apre e si caratterizza per il tema della fragilità della Terra, soprattutto per via degli esseri umani che usano e — a volte — abusano delle risorse del "proprio" pianeta. Tra gli abusi delle risorse della Terra, spunta il secondo tema del romanzo, quello del potere, e tutto ciò che ne consegue sull'averlo e controllarlo, anche per via dell'importante scoperta del Nerva, un'energia potente che, in quanto tale, può essere pericolosamente distruttiva ma anche un'importante risorsa.

Ma la narrazione si caratterizza anche come riflessione sulla famiglia, sulle amicizie, sulle tipologie di amore, e su tutte quelle caratteristiche che rappresentano gli esseri umani, le loro fragilità e i loro punti di forza.

Ciò che lega la narrazione ai suoi temi, e i temi stessi tra loro, è la scienza. Fisica, chimica e matematica, ma anche astronomia, geografia e geologia, sono protagoniste e sfondo del worldbuilding della Trilogia del Nerva, integrandosi perfettamente con lo storyline.

Dal punto di vista della scrittura, la Trilogia del Nerva è davvero molto scorrevole e avvincente. La terza persona è onnisciente: ti fa capire del mondo della protagonista, Anna Baird Drake, guardandolo sia dal suo punto di vista sia da quello delle persone a lei più vicine, andando a comporre il puzzle del Circolo Galattico Definito, un luogo popolato da persone differenti, come lo sono le loro storie e personalità. Inoltre, la narrazione così composta è ben utilizzata per lasciare qui e là indizi che, una volta arrivati alla fine di ogni libro, e del libro stesso, si compongono sempre di più andando a rispondere a tutte le domande che il lettore si pone.

Una volta finito, il libro ha risolto tutti i misteri che si è posto fin dall'inizio, compreso il fatto che il Nerva non è altro che meccanica quantistica. Ma vi sono ancora delle sottotrame che potrebbero essere ampliate un giorno ampliate, come la storia di Alasia Farren e quella di Arthurus Drake Graves. In più, per completare ancora meglio il wordbuilding, di modo da far immergere ancora di più il lettore, sarebbero molto interessanti un bestiario e un atlante del Circolo Galattico Definito.

Fiside, se è un bel libro!

At long last: either an alternate explanation for or continuation of my prior comic regarding how Bill was ABSOLUTELY naked in Ford's karaoke night drawing. (Because errors in art do not exist. Artists do not make mistakes. So if you see any in this comic, No You Do Not.)

I am so normal about these old dorks.

I'm not really clear on exactly when Bill started throwing his desperation book at Ford just like a needy ex do, but I find it extremely funny to imagine it happening literally the day of or after the makeshift funeral. Bill just gets this weird sense of 'Ford is taking steps to move on' and CANNOT FUCKING ABIDE.

I hope you enjoy all the goofy things I added to each page of Bill's sad spieling. (Everything SHOULD be readable so long as you view the full size, but I have added basically this whole little fanfic in the image descriptions, LMAO, which lays out all the little written notes and such.) Also don't ask how Bill managed to sneak that vampire pen in there. I have no idea, and honestly? I don't wanna know.

Yes, its name is just 'love' backwards. No, I will not be taking any feedback on this. Yes, EV-01 was only ever assigned to Bill's case due to the Theraprism being desperate to make some progress in rehabilitating him. No, it did not work anywhere close to staff's expectations - Bill didn't even appreciate EV-01's matching fondness for bowties! (He claimed the fondness to be "cultural appropriation" and insisted he'd been traumatized by it.)

In other news, I loved all the fun tags people added to the prior naked-karaoke comic (such as 'the hat and bow-tie stay ON during sex' and the classic '[insert keysmash here]', as well as the many amused/bewildered remarks about how I either made the bricks a piece of clothing or just straight up peeled Bill's skin off). However, I think my favorite thing by far was the several people losing their shit over the fact that I gave Bill toes. Like, excuse me? The magical talking triangle can have fingers but not toes??? Since when was that a rule????? 🤣 (Also the one person who reblogged with the cropped panel where Bill's fishnets pants are falling off to ask why Bill peed himself. Dude, I want to examine your brain...?)

Okie-dokie, I'm sick of looking at all of this stuff now and I'm off to go to work, after which I will either scribble some more goofy "Billford" comics or perhaps draw my lame human!Bill in Situations, idk yet. Maybe I'll even finally draw more than just a single other person's human!Bill...? Who knows, but I sure hope I can mix it up a little and not turn whatever I draw into a month-long fukken project. >:\
