Ok I’m FINALLY sitting down and collecting all my thoughts on the 2000’s Hallmark Don Quixote cuz. Oh my god it’s S O GOOD BDNBRNEHDNXJ EXCUSE MY RAMBLINGS I HAVE MANY THOUGHTS

First things first though actually the only reason I went out of my way to watch this movie before any others is cuz when I asked mister André Peña himself told me that that was the film he watched to get into Luis’ role and yeah. Yeeeeeeeaaaaaahhhhhh king I can see EXACTLY what parts you took from it BCNHENEJDNSN

The best way I can describe this movie is that it feels like The Princess Bride?? Or a Knights Tale??? Or Ever After like???????? It’s a whimsical adventure following a pair of silly guys doing the best they can!!!!!!!!! It’s charming and the characters are super loveable and it feels like what a Don Quixote movie SHOULD be!!!!!!!!!!

It also has like??? A surprisingly deep message that I wasn’t expecting??????? Like the people around Alonso only ever care about him if they can tease/mock him or view him in a sexual light/want him for his body and that really upsets him and it’s like!!! God damn I wasn’t expecting that!!!!!!!!

Sancho and Don Quixote’s relationship is also really fun, they feel more like an old bickering married couple rather than a devoted/devotee and I swear to god. There were some points I was watching this movie and it felt EXACTLY like some dumb shit Leon and Luis would do and say to each other. AGAIN. I CAN SEE EXACTLY WHERE ANDRÉ GOT HIS INSPIRATION FROM IT WAS UNCANNY ALMOST

Also I really liked how Dulcinea (or at least Alonso’s vision of her) felt like a genuine driving force in the plot!!!!! She’s an actual character that’s cared for rather than The Woman Don Quixote Likes!!!!!! ALSO AGAIN SANCHO WAS SO FUN he’s so genuine and cares about his family and is an actually Caring Guy and his lack of wits feels like it compliments Don Quixote rather than be annoying!!!!!!!! Just in general they compliment each other so well they don’t even need to do any big speeches you can just FEEL how much they care for each other!!!!!!!!!!!!

ALSO OH MY GOD THE ACTION AND THE PRACTICAL EFFECTS. S O MUCH WAS DONE PRACTICALLY AND IT LOOKED S O FUCKING BEAUTIFUL AND THE ACTION WAS ALSO BEAUTIFUL IT WAS SO GOOD AGAIN IT FELT LIKE WATCHING THE PRINCESS BRIDE

But finally. FINALLY. The best part of the movie was EASILY this

i rarely write comments because i can never find the words, but these works were so cool that even i could figure out a few words, so i left few comments on sparrington fics that are 11 years old (fics were written even earlier, in 2004, but the author posted it on ao3 only in 2013) and i was SOOO happy to even get an answer in 2024 😭😭 thanks to the authors for responding to comments years later

when i tell someone (except for my best friend) about my ocs, i feel ashamed because i feel like i could have write them better (despite the fact that i always try to do my best and actually satisfied with what i'm doing)

explaining! my main goal was to make them different and colorful. everything else is secondary. i didn't really try to make them realistic, i didn't really try to make them historical. this is character design, right? so, the main thing is that everyone is readable and unique among others in their environment. if you don't confuse anyone, then i've made it, hehe!

i made them colorful because, firstly, i just like it that way, and secondly, it's customary to exaggerate book characters for illustrations so that the image is brighter and more recognizable. if i were drawing as if for a movie/series, i would have done it differently. but this is a book. and, as i like to say, am i studying to be a theater artist for nothing... 🤫

also i was laughing so hard at the song from bratz that i used for speedpaint because it was too funny to finish the work with. enjoy JHSJSHSHDH

a few words about each one, not in the order in the picture:

i had an idea to draw aramis a popular type of lovelock at that time - with a ribbon of his beloved's favorite color. this hairstyle was also worn together with pearl in the left ear. i learned about it from another artist, and then i read about it on the internet in more detail. and when i sketched him for the first time, i drew it exactly like that, but this time i already came to the idea that, unfortunately, he would hardly wear such a hairstyle in reality. in the first book he hides the woman's identity until the end, when everything has long been obvious to everyone 😭 so there would hardly be any hint in his appearance about his lady. fanfact, his heel is slightly higher than the others. aramis, the man you are 💅 and i also really ask you to take a closer look at aramis's hairstyle, i left a tiny detail there. it's right there in plain sight and it's hidden in the styling!!

porthos is associated with warm colors for me, because he's such a silly, but together with aramis and d'artagnan it turned into one spot. so i went with the second option - blue, because i really liked that he appeared in sky blue before d'artagnan when they galloped after the duke, even though it was already in the second book. he turned out so charming, wahaha.

i think olive is the perfect choice for athos in the first book. depressive, long-term drunkard, but a nobleman undercover. matching? also, i have a headcanon that athos is this much 🤏 shorter than d'artagnan and aramis. just because it's funny. and those two are about the same, because it was specified in the book that they have the same size

d'artagnan is simple, yellow-brown - a young provincial, even the collar does not really match the shirt. where will he get the money for a collar for each shirt... but he's the only one with a bright feather, the mc after all! if you look closely, the feathers of all the others do not stand out so much. that's how it was intended. btw, his shirt is a little yellowing, if you look closely, you can see it

i really like it when all the characters has their own little things. their own collars, their own way of wearing jackboots, their own little details of the sleeves. i drew simply, but put my soul into it. i tried to put a lot into the form, both in general and in the details, and although i could explain absolutely everything, i would like you to look closely at it yourself 💝

song: би-2 — школа танцев (with orchestra). this song is about expressing the feelings through dance, which is very difficult for storyteller, but extremely worth being with their loved one at least for a moment! i LOVE it. i associate it very much with luis, especially after he actually danced in the dlc 🕺 strongly recommend listening full version

i’m slowly watching the soviet sherlock for the first time in my life now and it's the most tender johnlock that could possibly exist

my face hurts from smiling just looking at how well they treat each other, how attentive and polite they are, how they APPRECIATE each other. i love it endlessly

and i also really like that sherlock is humane and treats other close people well - his brother mycroft and mrs. hudson. these tv films is my comfort zone! and episode 5 is forever in my heart.

I gotta tell ya, I was not expecting this level of cuteness when I started watching the Soviet Sherlock TV films. They’re on YouTube with English subtitles and I’m only on the second one but it’s so worth watching. Sherlock & Watson are just straight up cuddling in the back of this carriage??? Also something about it is just so cozy, I’m loving the Victorian setting

i watched the cartoon two days ago and spontaneously wanted to draw a portrait of livesey yesterday. and then jim hawkins today!

also after that film i have already started reading the book, have read 1/5, and will continue after work now. i’m glad that there is already something to draw, sooo there will be treasure island sketches for sure 🙂‍↕️
