also this is the reason why i hate the whole discussion about "oh can we still say hermaphrodite in science discussions" because like. you all do not fucking understand the weight of the word. what it feels like when someone calls you a hermaphrodite when you are fearing for your fucking life. the amount of times i had to call myself a hermaphrodite because no one fucking knew what intersex meant but i needed to find a way to disclose that to clients so i didn't end up assaulted again when they were surprised. you don't know how much i fucking hated myself for that and what that was fucking like to experience at 16. like. that is what that word means to me! that's what i think of when i hear it! lots of other intersex people have their own stories, their own ways this slur was weaponized against us and written down in our medical records and a million fucking things. so i really don't want to hear from dyadic people who have never had this slur used against them about how hard it is to find an alternative word and how they just really really need to be able to still say it because of all the scientific discussions that are happening all the time or whatever. literally fuck off i don't care

I get insane under the cut

It’s been like 4 hours and I cannot stop thinking about it. Every time I stand up I start shaking. I feel nauseous and am coughing constantly. I feel like I am choking. really seems like some of you fail to understand the "reclaim" part of reclaiming slurs. reclaiming slurs is not just a free pass to say them. it's a way of healing from the pain they've been used to cause you and taking the power away from the word itself in order to cope with it

know whats kinda crazy is maybe like. 4 or 5 years ago when public consciousness of the ableist origins of the word 'retard' started becoming more apparent. i was kinda like. my view of the word as an r word myself was that it was absolutely inherently derogatory and ableist but with how normalized it was i wouldnt immediately call someone ableist or a bigot for using the r word. at most wrinkle my nose at em and wait to see how theyd react to ppl being upset by their use of the r word. but i didnt know if id call it 100% an unforgiveable slur

but i swear to god. it was like people went 'oh retard is a slur? awesome!' and decided to make it on par with other slurs. like oh golly a new slur dropped! straight up the use of the r word went from 'ableism is so deeply normalized that people dont know the origins of this term' to 'those who use the r word are purposefully doing so because its a slur'

I genuinely do not believe 99% of all TRAs who claim they are reclaiming the q slur were ever actually called that term in a derogatory way. Everyone outside of North America who I've talked to about it claimed they didn't even know it was a slur. The American people I've talked to about it are all straight or bi people who have all dated the opposite sex and/or people who I grew up with and know for a fact they have never been called that slur. Except maybe in the company of people with gender identities who throw that word around like it's nothing, because again they were never called that slur in a derogatory way. So it's just a circlejerk of gendies calling each other slurs affectionately and then saying that they were called said slurs so that gives them the right to "reclaim" it.

It's vile and homophobic. I'd love for each and every one of them to have to stand eye-to-eye with Fred Sargeant and say that shit to his face.
