When you said rpf fallout I immediately checked if you ever were a fan of dnp cause now that, that was some disaster for years. But I do think Charles and Max have a much much more distant relationship both from each other and from the fans. Chestappen vs Lestappen I don't see one being more jokey, maybe cause I interact in Spanish spaces of the fandom but there ARE people who believe it to be real. And checo specially gets asked this a lot (just three times since the last triple header!).

But I agree the general sentiment of avoiding containment breach in any rpf ship should the default. Ollie x Kimi and other rookies worry me a bit, cause I think we are seeing this shift of bromance being a good marketing strategy and it could be a slippery slope from there on.

Those of Phan trauma truly recognise each other blind. You never truly leave the phandom, just as the phandom never truly leaves you.

Okay tbf I didn’t know about the Chestappen lore, thanks for the education! But yeah I just think that jokes and all are fine and most lestappen-leaning tweets or edits I see I enjoy or laugh with. But there are a few who take it too far. Like you said it’s a slippery slope, I don’t want to get to the place where people are happy discussing fic openly on twitter (which I’ve seen!) especially because so many of the content people seem so happy to be openly discussing on twitter is made by people who wanted to keep it within traditional rpf circles of tumblr and ao3. It’s a violation of trust, as much as anything else. Similarly, I lived through the heat waves nightmare—and trust me that was a nightmare for MANY reasons—but it taught me that containment breaches are not fun! Actually! It was least fun for the author of that fic, who I believe ended up quitting fandom entirely because of it.

Again I think a lot of people are misunderstanding my point when I say “rpf should be kept in fandom spaces”, I mean the serious stuff. I don’t mean the lighthearted tiktok edits or the jokey tweets. I mean don’t share fic, don’t share art outside of designated spaces, for the love of god don’t get parasocial with it. Keep it cool, keep it casual. Don’t post anything you wouldn’t be happy discussing at work drinks face to face with someone.

Sorry if this has been asked before but what is Zany's Smurf gimmick?

see, you think this would be an easy question to answer and by all means it should be! so get ready for a disjointed one. multiple, even. i just kind of say things here:

my original idea was that he'd have a gimmick similar to flighty (always doing various "zany" activities when he's not helping greedy) or jokey (annoying misc. mischief). "zany" is a word people use to describe like any cartoony nonsense, basically interchangable with "wacky", OR a noun to mean an eccentric person (which he was supposed to be) so it's hard to narrow that down. that was supposed to work to my advantage but at the same time it really didn't LOL

one of zany's activities is taking dares when he's bored and he'll do the dumbest things. jokey likes taking advantage of that and smurfs such as smurfette are like "oh for smurfs sake leave him alone. stop daring him to stick his head in dirt for hours" and greedy would say something like "you shouldn't do that type of stuff you need self control." [a smurf dares him to eat 30 cookies] "30???? i can do more than that"

the thing is: i created zany in 2019 for the sole purpose of interacting with my favorite smurfs / shipping him with greedy. i didn't want to use jokey for that stuff, i wanted something that felt more like me at the time. i was like. having a lot of trouble figuring all this out because i usually just wanted to focus on his dynamic with greedy. in older posts you might see him in scene gear with a patterned bandana because i was generally embracing my younger self back then and self-expression / having fun. he fell under 'smurfs if it was modern' or 'what if a modern day smurf was in the show's canon like a time traveler' au imaginings whenever i wasn't picturing him in the show canon, but i think i've drifted away from that (though i still completely get the appeal of the scene zany design)

speaking of him and jokey, i figured maybe they'd pull pranks together or something and when i learned the historical definition of a zany i was like *JAWDROP*

anyway: i'd say zany's gimmick was meant to be unpredictable by nature, but he could also be a vehicle for lighthearted poking at the show itself. ie. he'd be in a cage and notice the bars are tall and wide enough apart so he'd just slip right out. greedy/another smurf would say "how did you do that". and he'd shrug. that's more self-aware than i usually go for but if i was making a joke like that i'd want it to be silly

overall zany is a lot of things the show wouldn't allow: peyo hated when hb made new smurfs so a bunch of them never made it into the show / only lasted a while. his design is very simple but says nothing about his gimmick in a way that i feel would piss off both hb AND peyo. (which tbh i was thinking about redesigning him in some way at some point). there was also a bit of dissonance in terms of "i want this character to be more fleshed out than the show would allow, but i treat the other characters a similar way so it's fine" and making jokes like he's just some minor smurf who by all means shouldn't exist in-universe, ie. "omg remember zany he was in scampering smurfs in the background at 5:06". at one point he had a backstory and stuff that really honed in on the latter idea of "he's too different/not supposed to be here" ie. he used to be something other than a smurf or created artificially but i don't think i even like those ideas anymore

in comparison to fan characters/sonas i've made recently, zany is not one i'm particularly proud of. i love him and greedy but everything was suuuuch a mess. as the above demonstrates, i had far too many conflicting ideas. maybe that's part of the joke of who zany is. or maybe one of these days i'll try and give him something more cohesive. we'll see

If Air Man came to life, that would be creepy

Season 4 Episode 2 Featured on: Neon Lights & Holiday Nights ~ The SiIvaGunner All-Star Winter Festival Collection

Whilst reminiscing on the sudden prominence of Game Dude back on Slope Dude, I got reminded of a fair few other blink-and-you'll-miss-it memes found throughout the SiIvaGunner channel. For instance, though most Season 1 jokes have become mainstays for legacy reasons, Baneposting as covered on Maskettaman - Dr. Pavel's Fly​-​So​-​Good has in large part been contained to 2016 due to being impractical to use; Ghetto Smosh from Season 6 and Assassin's Sneed, meanwhile, faded from use due to the meme itself just losing steam and favor for a lot of people. It can be quite an interesting dive to look into why memes fall in and out of fashion, but for If Air Man came to life, that would be creepy the answer to both is pretty simple; It's a Christmas song, and it's by Fred.

YouTube old-heads who were around for the days of Annoying Orange, Numa Numa Guy and Weezer's Pork and Beans music video know all too well about Fred Figglehorn; perhaps the first scientific experiment conducted on the theory that Loud = Funny. I'll admit, I fall for said trick plenty myself – Sex - Steve Harvey remains one of my favorite rips on the channel – yet with Fred in particular I don't know if there are many people who nostalgically reminisce over his content. In some sense, you could argue he was ahead of his time; following the "obnoxious spoiled manchild" routine of the Paul brothers covered on Crompton Racing but with the clear intent of being an exaggerated parody rather than being in total earnest...and yet I don't know if it ever led to anything, actually funny? Much like the Paul brothers, the fame and attention Fred received also involved a scattershot career in lighthearted jokey music, covered back on Logan Paul's Shop; and it was in this stint that Fred Figglehorn cursed us all with Christmas is Creepy in December of 2009. Eleven years later, for SiIvaGunner Season 4 Episode 2's Winter Festival, the team was looking for novel ways to celebrate the season, much the same as they had done back earlier in the year with the Summer Festival and Koopa Street; and the wheel inexplicably landed on Fred.

I use all of these negatively-charged descriptions, but I also don't know if I'd say the reception toward seeing Fred Figglehorn on the SiIvaGunner was anything close to being vitriolic or terrified. Compared to the reception of Season 5's Yankin' as covered on Epic Rap Battles of History: Funny vs. Funnier, Fred and Christmas is Creepy felt like it was met far more lukewarmly, close to complete apathy; whatever rage people had toward Fred had faded years ago. And though that may well be why the meme left just as soon as it arrived, it did give us a solid handful of fun rips using the quite hummable Christmas source; most notable to me, personally, being If Air Man came to life, that would be creepy.

Jiko Music sits as one of the most dedicated long-time channel contributors with over 800 rips made since Season 2, and it's all a very solid lineup; many of which I've covered on here before. Trail on Powdery Snow Halation, Mario Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Princess, Famous Surprise, and many more show that they hold a fantastic track record in approaching simple concepts with a very fine touch for quality and finesse. Jiko Music's work is often a step above a simple two-source mashups, but even when they are as such like the lattermost example they're done with care that you can really sense; and its that similar care that's drawn me toward If Air Man came to life, that would be creepy for this post. It really gives us the best of both worlds; highlighting how fun Christmas is Creepy's melody is in moments of full-on arranging it to Air Man Stage's sound, whilst other moments show its appeal as a mashup source. The redone intro is a particular highlight; it starts on the same note as the original Air Man Stage theme's intro, and both times that the section is looped in the intro the last three notes are kept unchanged, but the rest is seamlessly edited to follow Christmas is Creepy's melody, whilst still using Air Man Stage's rockin' NES bassline.

That bassline gets a really interesting addition once the theme starts and it becomes more of a straightforward mashup between the two. While it's almost entirely just using Christmas is Creepy's vocals with Air Man Stage's tune, the bass is given an electrical pound to it to sound like a blend of the two songs' backing tracks, easing the two for the blend in a way much like rips like Super Ludacris JB World. It gives the rip a real sense of energy and thoroughness, that just comes to ahead once Christmas is Creepy's chorus hits; syncing the mashup to Air Man Stage's melody being arranged to the song its being mashed up with, but still featuring the same breaks back to the original tune for specific sections as featured in the intro. I get the feeling that sentence was a bit of a run-on, so to be concise; If Air Man came to life, that would be creepy blends being a mashup and a melody swap in a genuinely super elegant way. Part of me thinks that Air Man Stage was picked in particular for just how well it lends itself to this structure as a song with really iconic and recognizable endings to its melodic sections that allow them to stick out in the midst of the Christmas is Creepy arranging, but another part feels as if this was just the natural way Jiko Music worked toward getting their initial idea onto paper as satisfyingly as possible.

Much like Lagplane, its an interesting feeling to know that Christmas is Creepy rips are more or less finished, and that we have a finalized table of rips using the source to go off of when discussing our favorites. Granted, the two rips aren't exactly comparable given that they use sources that I hold very different amounts of attachment toward; and yet that difference in affection oddly make me appreciate If Air Man came to life, that would be creepy leagues more. It took a source that I held very little enthusiasm for and put in an evident amount of effort toward highlighting every appealing part of it, like how weirdly befitting Fred's pitched-up vocals are to NES chiptune, how catchy the melody becomes when highlighted with a punchy bassline, and just how good anything can sound when given the highest quality rippers' most delicate touches. Though it might not sit amidst my favorite of the rips they've made, Jiko Music absolutely knocked If Air Man came to life, that would be creepy out of the park. And really, what better time than Christmas is there to highlight those small, memorable victories?

Testing the waters on how many vent posts it takes before everyone gets tired and leaves, but thankfully nobody actually reads these.

For the record, I am not planning to kill myself this time. I may sound like it, I may want to, but I'm not doing it. I don't have the means, nor the opportunity, nor the backup failsafe money bank for another hospital trip. So I'm not doing it.

I'm slowly chipping at the cut in my foot. I'm moving out in november, and I've realized I can't quit by then, so I'll just keep doing it. I'll get clean razors eventually. Until then, any handy tools will have to do. It... Feels good, if I'm being honest. Like I've missed it. Like an old friend.

I tried talking about it to someone but they told me in no uncertain terms to shut up and not bring it up again. They say not making jokes about suicide helps, but I've found that sincere, non-humorous discussions fair even worse. I tried so many times. I reached out to everyone I have. It doesn't matter if they tell me to keep it quiet outright, or just gently, softly, lovingly hint that I should drop the subject and go back to the usual jokey-jokes and lighthearted fun. I'm tired, and I've tired everyone with me. It doesn't matter how I'm doing, as long as I can keep things fun. Even my sister knows. She... She said nothing. I mean, she talks to me, just... Not about this. I can keep it fun and lighthearted, and it's not even untrue, I can still have fun, I just hurt. Every day from my waking up to dragging myself into bed I hurt, and I'm doing a terrible job of not letting it show, but it's passable and therefore enough. So I hurt, and I cut my hands, and I keep my scars from healing just to hurt in a different way for a bit, to take the edge off, to breathe. I can't wait for november, because there's only so much I can keep hidden from the people around me I don't trust, but once I'm alone? Once nobody is watching? I can cut all I want. Nothing else ever helps.

I really thought I was going to drown last friday. When pain exploded in the center of my chest and I lost balance, as the underwater current pulled me away from the shore, I thought that was it. I think maybe it was. It still feels like drowning, I think. What a pretentious thing to say. True though.

I'm acting like it's a recent thing but it's been going on for months. Years, maybe. I think I've always been wrong. The first time I burned my hand, I think I was thirteen? I don't post Genshin Impact stuff on here much (and in fact I don't think I follow any GI creators on Tumblr or even really check the tag), but I feel like documenting some of my Chinese > English localization comparisons here.

(I post about this stuff more regularly on the GI Wiki discord server, but it's nice to have something more easily searchable than discord.)

So this is something that I consider a poor localization because it injects too much "flavor" where there really wasn't any in the original Chinese version.

The original line was more literally "Let's make something for Haypasia. The lunchbox Tighnari made earlier fell all over the floor and besides, I'm getting hungry too. We can take our time and talk after we've eaten."

To be fair to the EN localization, narratively and structurally speaking, a direct translation is frankly very boring. Paimon already pointed out the fallen lunchbox earlier, complete with a shot of it all over the ground, so the middle sentence really exists for Haypasia's sake more than the player's.

However, I think so much personality was injected into the line that it made Paimon sound legitimately annoyed and accusatory, versus the possible intent that translator meant it to be spoken in a lighthearted and joking manner.

(On the wiki server, we discussed the possibility that Corina over-acted the line based on what she read because she didn't actually know how the scene would play out; Paimon's expression isn't annoyed at all, but the voiceover very much sounds annoyed. The "Ugh, anyways" particularly makes it sound annoyed rather than jokey, so it was understandable why she'd act it out like that.)

My vibe TL for the line would be something like:

Well, Tighnari made you a little something earlier but it fell onto the floor so... Paimon thinks it's time to cook something for all of us! Paimon's getting hungry anyways, so we can talk after we finish eating.

By contrast, this is a good localized line which accounted for the differences between the Chinese and English names for Klee's "Jumpy Dumpty," which is more directly translated from Chinese as "Hippity-Hoppity Bomb."

The OG line was closer to "It's a bomb, right? I heard your conversation earlier." It works for the obvious reason that "bomb" is in the Chinese name for Jumpy Dumpty.

Because it isn't in the EN name and thus, a directly translated line wouldn't make sense, the translator had to get a bit creative. They reframed Ferdinand's second sentence so he was instead picking up on Paimon's trepidation to deduce Jumpy Dumpty's nature, making the line sound more natural and keeping the player's immersion intact.

(The Gourmet Supremos quests WISH they got this person translating their lines. Holy moly is that quest series a place where EN localization went to die.)

Unfortunately, the localization swings back to "WTF is this" territory in these two lines.

Eula's "Fine, vengeance will be mine" is an invention of the English localization; the OG line ended after the first sentence. I'm not sure who added an extra line or why, but I think it was a bit excessive.

As for Collei's line, I'm not sure why the translator rendered the line as "worried for him or happy for her," when the OG line was pretty clearly directed towards Idiya's self-deprecation for both parts. A direct translation of the OG line would've been a perfectly valid English construction and 99% of people would've had no problems interpreting the line:

Seeing her like this, I'm really not sure whether I should be concerned or happy.

Oh boy! Buckle up because I foresee this becoming a full-blown essay.

Now it is a little funny you're tagging specifically a Kemetic pagan for his input on fandomization of mythology considering the Tumblr Kemetic community coined the tag #Kemetic fandom for more lighthearted/jokey posts about our own religion. Reconstructionist pagans I feel are much more open to having fun with our gods than, say, a Christian or a Muslim. Jesus and Mohammed are much more Serious Business among their followers than Osiris or Set are among us.

Of course this is just a trend, not a monolithic trait, and I bet a fair amount of it is residual from that very same culture of fandomization of our sacred stories we're immersed in. I know certain Hellenic pagans get really fired up about the issue of how Zeus is represented in the myths and the kind of image the modern dweller of the internet has of him because of the surrounding discourse.

Another reason us Kemetics feel like we can joke around about our own sacred stories with each other is that we also make the time to treat it seriously when it's called for. When we're done having a laugh about how Set was tricked into eating a cum-coated letuce and got pregnant from it we can engage in serious discussions texts like The Contendings of Horus and Set raise.

What does this story say about Ma'at and its relationship to the institution of Pharaonic Divine Kingship? What does the apparent contradiction in Set being an agent of Ma'at and a fratricidal attempted usurper mean? Do Set's actions in the contendings constitute sexual assault or rape, whether literal or metaphorical? How should this story inform our practice if at all?

(And I should note, consensus among Egyptologists is that the text we have of the contendings was a satyrical take on the story! So, extra grain of natron on top of it all, as well as proof that even our ancestors in the practice didn't always treat all their sacred stories with full reverence.)

The polytheist paradigm and the focus on orthopraxy (practicing correctly) as opposed to orthodoxy (believing the right things) also contributes I feel. By and large modern pagans are not mythic literalists and our faith doesn't rest on the accuracy and infallibility of a specific corpus of texts. But the social dynamics around it are a huge part as well.

Circling back to your situation, while I would think comparative analysis, particularly of the type I know you're capable of, is an incredibly reverent thing to do to any text I would warn about the potential pitfall of not taking into consideration to at least a small extent the context of the culture that originated it and the religious praxis it informs. And I also think using a comparative approach might rub a Pacific Islander/Hawaiian audience wrong if you go too far into implying some sort of universality of all storytelling that dismisses the unique aspects of their culture.

Ultimately my recommendation is to write your analysis! But also try to look into perspectives from the culture that originated the story and try to amplify them alongside your own original thoughts.

Hey, I wanted to specifically tag you @troutfur /@aerial-jace because I thought you might have informed opinions on this. I recently read a book on Hawaiian mythology and found it very fascinating. Now I've seen people on this website say they are frustrated with mythology being fandom-ized as it disrespects that it was not just fun fiction but has an important meaning, especially with cultures that have historically been oppressed and often carelessly appropriated. Now I (not Hawaiian or any kind of Pacific Islander myself) thought a lot when reading certain parts of the book of my interpretations of the characters of certain myths in a manner similar to the Orpheus post I just reblogged, and I'm wondering, if I were to share my thoughts on it, what is the line between a respectful engagement with the myth and a disrespectful "fandomization". Is it ok to post about my "character interpretations"?
