I've been meaning to watch Jujutsu Kaisen. What got you watching? I just finished season one of Delicious in Dungeon.

Ahhh I’ve been watching/ reading it since the first season! I originally got into JJK because of Gojo… I didn’t even know who he was but I remember scrolling on twitter and seeing someone with a cropped closeup of Gojo’s face from vol. 4? But I remember being too shy to ask this person who he was/ what series was he from lol. I remember seeing the art and thinking “not to sound weird but I really love how this guys teeth is drawn…” and so, I reversed image searched the drawing and wala!

This was a few months before S1 had even gotten announced, too. I remember pulling up the manga and reading a few pages and not getting all that far (I was being lazy tbh.) but then, the anime had gotten announced and I was like “wait, isn’t this the series that I just found out about a couple of months ago??? It looks fun :0!!!” But even then, I still hadn’t started on reading it until after the second episode was released lmfao.

I actually ended up binging the manga in one night and at the time, there were only about 50ish chapters available so I was literally fiending for more if I’m being real 😭… I was so crazwkskakal. I wasn’t too nuts about Gojo originally (I was definitely a FAN but I remember being so normal about him during S1’s original run lmfao. The things I’ve said about that man… I’m a Gojo girl unfortunately….. I’m still kind of normal about him though. He’s a very well written character and deserves all of the love he gets as a character kakakak. It’s so easy to like him!

I do tend to stay away from fandoms in general (I’ve done this ever since I’d started to use social media) but especially regarding the fans of the stuff I actually enjoy. Outside of the classics like Naruto (always in my heart…) and such, I haven’t really enjoyed a new age shounen and series this much with my whole heart since JJBA (not new age but you get it) and if you’ve been following this blog for a while then you must know that I used to be such a huge fan of it! (I still am but I’ve calmed down… I miss it a whole lot actually. I still have to catch up with JoJolands… haven’t gotten that far tbh.)

DM is fun but I haven’t gotten all that far into the manga (only ever read the first chapter and that was years ago) but I watched the first 12 or so episodes and I really enjoyed them! Haven’t looked back (it’s hard to keep up with anime… and the fans make me not want to interact with it as much tbh…. JJK is diff since i genuinely adore it and I don’t interact with the fans at all anyway outside of a few mutuals/friends and I pretend everything else doesn’t exist 😭…… JJK fans are so 👎🏾 but I’m already invested so it’s a little too late for me to turn back 🫨.)

I’m doing a deep-read of the Japanese original print (reread) and Overhaul 1.0 (first read) side-by-side, and writing down everything I notice from small details, version differences, translation differences, etc.

I really love the "train conductor/bus driver/etc puts themself in danger to protect the passengers" trope- NOOOOOOOOOO COOL CONDUCTOR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Small correction: These first onomatopoea are actually...flesh sounds...... And I wasn't really thinking about corrections for this one, more just for nuance, but Neon says something like "it's unfortunate, but..." in this line.

A small difference here: in my version it's actually CO2, not oxygen that's being supplied to the Heat Plant. However, considering that O2 is a fuel for combustion and CO2 is a byproduct, it may be an error on Nightow's part.

This is one of the first indications of who Kaito actually is. He knows all of this off the top of his head, which catches the Captain by surprise.

It also provides information about Plants. This could either mean that all Plants require some kind of fuel, or that the Plants can utilize those resources in some other way to help the Sandsteamer.

We also get to see more of Kaito's attachment to this Sandsteamer.

Here, the original line is more like "Why would Brilliant Dynamites Neon have to listen to you when this treasure—the prey I've been hunting—is right in front of me!?"

This is where I notice that Neon has a sort of obsession with "beauty," not just in the regular sense but also in his own way. He obviously values visuals—his over-the-top fashion and desire to go out with a bang—but to him, it's also a question of dignity. (this will be on the exam yall)

Even the gang member is getting worried about what Neon might do to Kaito... And here's where we find out why Kaito knows so much and wants to protect the Sandsteamer!

Notes on the original phrasing of this line, since I saw a few posts comparing the Dark Horse and Overhaul versions.

The Japanese line is「パッと散りな　小僧」 パッ(pa') is an onomatopoea for "pop," "poof," or a release (e.g. letting go of an object). 散る(chiru, used here in command form) means "scatter," most commonly associated with falling cherry blossom petals. From that, it's also a euphemism for dying. i can go on for another paragraph on the association of cherry blossoms with Japanese views on life/death but you can figure that out. or google it idk

I think this line is another excellent representation of Neon's values on beauty and death.

I love this page so much!! The flow comes to a complete stop, and the tension that has been building throughout the last few pages is at its peak here. The composition is also excellent. The art is symmetrical, and Neon's giant outfit follows the lines leading from the bottom corners of the page up to Vash's gun, where they intersect right in the middle. I JUST LOVE THESE KINDS OF COMPOSITIONS SO MUCH.....

It took a while to figure out what happened here, but I think Vash either sensed danger or actually dodged a bullet, and chose to jump back out. Love the way he's firmly holding Kaito's overalls while Kaito doesn't understand anything that's going on lol

The silly goofies... theyre screaming crying shitting themselves out there....

It's a bit hard to see, but Kaito is screaming "AAAHHH PULL ME UPPP" in the middle panel.

This exchange after the two get to safety is also so silly... There's a missing "whrrrr drill drill" SFX for Vash's drill hand (?). I saw a photo of the Dark Horse version which was missing it in the same way, with the leftover ン on Vash's cheek.

I forgot to highlight it, but this note pertains to Vash's second speech bubble about death and destruction. The Japanese version of the line is something like "I swear!! I have at least 2 digits' worth of death-gods(死神) or poverty-gods(貧乏神) haunting me!!" Death-gods/shinigami are already well-known in the West so I won't explain that here. The second one, poverty-god/binbōgami, is a similar kind of thing, except it brings poverty to whoever it clings onto (instead of death). Fun fact: Binbōgami are said to like yakimiso (grilled miso paste).

VASH'S SOUPY BRAIN!!! The mystery has been solved!!!

But first, in order... Vash's first line is more like "We can't be worrying about all this right now." It could keep the original phrasing, but the main idea is to change "me" to "us."

The next (most important) line is actually "We gotta save brainpower [for the matter at hand]." The confusion lies in the word 脳みそ, which literally translates to "brain miso," but is actually the word for brain tissue, and thus brainpower. It has nothing to do with miso soup! The origin I wrote in the middle-left of the image is...dubious.... I told my mom about this just now, and she mentioned that it might be called that because みそ(miso) also means the center or key aspect of something. Weblio also says it signifies innards (like from crab or shrimp), similar to what I wrote in the annotation at first. I'll fix it in the document later

Also, I would phrase the last line as "I mean, we're gonna stop this ship, right!?"

Kaito's skills are actually insane. What do you mean you just copied the entire blueprint... Mistranslation: The respect is directed towards his dad, so it should be "You must really look up to your dad."

I didn't know his name was spelled Kaite in this version. My Japanese version copy has that bottom part in a regular speech bubble, and with the font for the boxes. It's most likely just a version-exclusive error. He also says that his dad "found" the ship, but I'm not sure if that's another error or not since this translation makes more sense.

This line is phrased more like "Just for a little bit of cash, I'm now taking advantage of you for a deal with a crook."

I really loved the execution of this scene in the '98 anime. get hammered into the ground boy The final line is from Kaito, not Vash, and should be "...Yeah!!"

how do you feel about the writing / pacing of oshi no ko? any criticism you have for as far as you've read?

I tried reading the first few 5ish chapters, and I know some spoilers, but I just can't connect with the mc or narrative. It feels really shallow (?) Or maybe the pov is too detached? I also feel like some of the characters just say things like mouthpieces, but it doesn't feel like natural dialogue ? Not sure...

All I see is praise for it / very little criticism & I don't understand...maybe I'm not a fan of the authors writing idk! Kinda wish I could see what others see and enjoy it lol

asdfgkhgf I.... I agree with what you say and as much as I want to love onk and say its a masterpiece I think it has many flaws people tend to overlook or simply ignore because of the visuals. The story is beautiful dont get me wrong, the style and the character design looks amazing and that's what drew me in the first place but as for the story...

I am gonna try not to comment on any spoilers but I just think that the characters are very detached. I dislike most characters (except Kana go queen go bestie my entire world if you wish) because they are all so.... Not real people sometimes. Like I want to connect with them and feel the story they are telling but sometimes they feel to detached and it just kind of ends up going in circles.

The story is interesting I think it has a nice hook but I dont think its enough to keep the reader going sometimes. There is the whole supernatural element behind it that I dont want to spoil too much of but it has been a few chapters since it was last commented upon and we are back to the same cycle of the story where Aqua is just there manipulating the people around him and everyone running behind him to his every beck and call. I think Aqua is an interesting character because of his complexity but I think people really overlook how much of a shitty person he can be too imo

Anyways I guess what I am trying to say is that yes I see where you are coming for. What kept me going is the curiosity behind the story and I hope all the dead ends are tied in the end because I feel like we are slowly reaching the climax up to date but I overall dont know how to feel about the whole story and I am excited for the anime mostly for Kana, Melt and the visuals and the Akane x Kana moments who are we kidding

i dont genuinely dislike the gk endings bc i know they could be a thousand times worse, its just disappointing bc they were kinda mid. anti climactic for an absolute banger of a series

but i love being a hater. top three most unsatisfying character endings? for me its tsurumi (shouldve died) tsukishima (shouldve died) and hijikata (shouldve been killed by literally anyone else)

yeah exactly that. i can't complain too much because everything could have been sooooo much worse (#rakugotrauma) but the ending just lacked impact... the it element that the rest of the manga had in abundance 😪 which is like not the end of the world but was a 減点 thing kinda sorta. as i said since it set the precedent of going over the line so many times the fact that it didn't in the end was just meh whatever. noda said that he just wanted it to be one of those works that is beloved because it has a happy ending but imo [10 paragraphs of incredibly off the wall things nobody in their right mind cares about]

as for whose endings sucked the most... tsurumi takes the first spot of course, as in anything else. he should have died. there is no value in him surviving, it only cheapens the drama towards the end, there is no sense of fulfillment in this particular villain surviving... i disagree with noda's choices here and there, and this one was the most awful still. in my opiniòn. sugimoto should have died too i think. solely for reread value... like you reread the thing and he's saying "i'm immortal!" so many times, and you get sooooo sad but in a good, loving way... oh reckless hero, you weren't immortal, after all........ as it is you're just oh so he wasn't lying huh 😐... um ok.... anyway. and inkarmat becoming breeding stock idgaf. the only(!) surviving woman besides the mc is there shitting at least one kid per year for the next 15 years. awesome. like that's literal unadulterated domestic abuse - to keep your wife constantly pregnant for over a decade, there's a reason women don't do that anymore and live with a 50% elevated cervical cancer risk taking OC for years. "maybe she wanted it and was happy!" shut the fuck up you know nothing

As someone who admires the Todoroki family from a writing perspective and just Horikoshi's ability with characterization as a whole, I'm very, very scared that the series as a whole is just going to end cleanly. I'm invested in the Aizawa/Present Mic/Shirakumo/Kurogiri arc the same way you feel about the Todorokis, but I feel Horikoshi is going to go for a happily ever after for everyone somehow. I'm very fine with the idea of major characters dying, but I don't think Horikoshi has the balls to do it. That's just my two cents though.

That image of the Todorokis made me so happily sad in a way though. He's so SMALL next to Endeavor and Natuso!

yes that’s my fear exactly, too. because i know hori has the talent and the capability to end these stories in gut-wrenching but well executed ways, but does he have the balls to do it????? to potentially upset a huge portion of the fandom that would rather have the fan-service happy fluffy endings instead of something that’s written beautifully but hurts so much??? i don’t know. i’m worried he doesn’t, but i’m really hoping he does >.<

i gotta be honest, it bothers me so much when people say dabi deserves a happy ending or that dabi dying is a ‘bad ending’ for his story, as if dabi didn’t kill TONS of innocent people just because he felt like it, like dabi didn’t consciously make the decision to take away mothers and fathers and brothers and sisters and sons and daughters from people, as if dabi doesn’t ENJOY killing, etc. it like genuinely makes me see red HAHAHA like alright, let’s say he lives. what happens? the only plausible answer is that he goes to fucking jail, because they got the man in 4k lucidly admitting to 30+ murders, among other crimes. what else could possibly happen??? the judge and the authorities and society as a whole just give him a slap on the wrist and ignore his laundry list of crimes because he’s ~got trauma~ and he’s ~the eldest son of the number one hero~??? dabi’s story as a whole is absolutely heart wrenching—and it deserves to stay that way!!!—but that doesn’t excuse any of his actions. like, at all. i’ve got loads of trauma too and yet i am not out there killing in the street lmfao.

or what? the whole todofam works out their YEARS long combined and convoluted family and personal trauma in one battle out on the battlefield and suddenly everything is resolved and happy and great again and they all love each other and everything’s been forgiven and dabi’s/touya’s severe mental illness just disappears??? just evaporates from the tissues of his brain like a fucking mist??? it’s borderline offensive LMFAO like i know this is a series about fucking superheroes but hori has done a pretty good job keeping several aspects of realism within it. my cousin and i have this talk often but it’s incredible and super interesting how hori has been able to take something so REAL (trauma as a whole, with all the league members) and portray it in a way that is relatable and realistic while still filtering it through this superhero lens and society. it’s brilliant. they all deserve well written endings, dabi and tomura especially.

anyway sorry i’m going on a serious rant here and i am going to stop HAHAHA but yeah, i totally feel you. and it’s like,, i get it, in a way; i understand the appeal of everything ending super happy and warm and feel good, but for me personally, i would rather things end in a way that hurts but is well executed, you know? i’ll take that over bad writing any day. the aizawa/mic/shirakumo | kurogiri storyline is SUPER interesting and they too deserve a properly written ending, even if it’s painful!!!!!

anyway moving on yeS HE’S SO TINYYYYY ugh i love how he’s like, taller than rei + fuyumi by a decent amount but so much shorter than enji and natsuo it just 🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺 it makes my heart !!!!! explode <3 he’s so cute <3 he really is his momma’s son like look at him!!!!!!!! he looks like her so much 🥺🥺🥺

Can we talk about this? There's so many things going on:

Iruma is given a "special item that can only be used once and can summon whatever you want". From other shounen manga you kinda assume that this item will be saved for later for the arc climax when the MC is in a tight spot, but no, he uses immediatly

Which bring us to the second thing and that is Iruma is becoming more a demon by the day. He is becoming greedy, impatient, while still being a cinnamon roll which is awesome since we see him change but at the same time stay his self which is a hard thing to write IMO

And the most wholesome thing, what does iruma summon??? AZZ and CLARIN askfjsjkasdhjkasdf. Do you see Iruma's face when he says "There's something I really, really want" and on the next panel you see Clara and Alice beaming I can't- My heart-

There's also the world building going on in this chapter with the many ears race and the previous conversation with Bachiko but then i'll never be done yapping

I can't stress enough how good this manga is

(Tho it plays with my feelings since it makes me thing it'll go on the trio rute but that's just wishful thinking... anyways let's not dampen the mood....)
