i will never shut up about how one of the most brilliant and beautiful lines in all of fiction is 'you are a monster. a plauge. you defile beautiful things.' and how the entirety of OFMD is a response and rebuttle to that. queer people do not defile beautiful things. we only want them, and we deserve them. we are beautiful things. we can wear fine things well.

so Bobby is what, a fourth generation firefighter? and we always thought well, that happens, you get legacies like that in the military and firefighting, etc, where the sons want to follow in their fathers' heroic footsteps, and that's the way it seemed to be headed at first - until the father was revealed to be a drunk and an abuser. so the question is why would Bobby want to continue to uphold that tradition -
- unless it was to make amends for the role he believed (believes?) he plays in his father's death?

no but the almost agressive difference between parrot describing the iron swords as peaceful and how they sometimes purposefully kill evbo slower because they think it's cool like tf???? what the hell????
something something a society built entirely on your sword's durability and fighting to survive being inherently dehumanizing. and peaceful doesn't always mean good, they just didn't have an excuse to be violent

Goddd Peter is making me go INSANE this season
Neal did this for you! He did this FOR YOU! I get that your stupid cop mentality means that you can't excuse any crimes but like he did this FOR YOU! His father is the reason you were in jail so of course he's gonna try and fix it! And yes because he's a criminal he's going to go that route, but there was NO legal way to get Peter out of that trial! Neal had to do something!
And like, Neal does crimes for Peter on a REGULAR basis! Every single episode he's breaking into places and stealing shit and doing things that are ILLEGAL and yet Peter overlooks them because they benefit him! And let him arrest criminals! Sure, the arrests themselves are legal and they get warrants in the end, but the entire lead up to those arrests are COMPLETELY ILLEGAL! Peter is ENTIRELY willing to bend the law in so many instances across the show in order to take down the bad guys! But somehow bribing a judge and submitting a false confession to keep an INNOCENT PERSON FREE is too far???

There could never have been a happy ending to black sails. If the writers had said “and so they won the war and freed all the slaves and defeated all the English and lived happily ever after“, we would not have believed it, because we know, historically, that it isn’t true. And even a smaller, less complete victory would have been unbelievable. “They lost the war but found happiness regardless” - would they though?? “Silver made them give up the war and Madi and Flint forgave him” - are you sure?? Madi and Flint both made their entire purpose a war they were destined not to win. Both of them would have sacrificed Silver, and anyone else, to win it, and it would have been in vain. There was no way for them to be happy, not ever.
So what the writers gave us in the end was a soothing story. There are days when I believe that Flint is happy in Savannah with Thomas. There are days when I believe that Silver and Madi found a way to move forward together, and there are days when I don’t. In the end, a story is true or untrue depending on people’s belief. If you want to believe that black sails has a happy ending, then you can, and it does. And if you want to believe that the ending is horrifying, then you can, and it is. I think one of the most brilliant things the black sails writers ever did is giving us an ending that is never just one thing, just like Silver, just like Flint, just like the entire show.

TLOU ep.8 spoilers
When Joel finds Ellie at the end of the episode, the first thing he says to her is "It's me". Normally, that could read as a comfort, a victorious sentiment of 'it's alright, I'm here now'. But the way he says it, it sounds more like confusion. He doesn't immediately understand why her reaction is as desperate and violent as it is even when she's facing him. He doesn't yet understand why he has to clarify for her that it's him. He is genuinely confused.
Only then, when she settles a little, do the realizations come flooding for Joel. Now he processes just how disheveled and scared and frantic she is. He's never seen her in a state like this, which he knows can only mean one thing - whatever Ellie has just been through, it has been so much worse than anything they've faced together before now.
And he says it again, "It's me", and then he says "It's okay". And this time it is a comfort, a statement of safety.
And Ellie starts trying to explain, but she can't get anything coherent out so she just collapses into his arms and hugs him.
Joel is not stupid, and he is not a wishful thinker. He knows that Ellie is a 14-year-old girl who was kidnapped by unknown men, was gone for hours, and who has now emerged from a burning building covered in blood and so traumatized that she screams and struggles the moment he touches her. He knows what these signs all point to, and the absolute terror that he must feel, fearing what Ellie probably went through. It would be paralyzing to any parent.
So he just repeats "It's okay." And he says "babygirl", and he says "I got you", because that's how he comforts his daughters. As much as he didn't want to admit it, Ellie is his daughter now, and he promised himself he'd do anything to protect her, and that's all he knows how to do in this moment. To tell her that he's here, he's him, she's safe. That it's okay.
They both know that it isn't but, fuck, what else can you do?
