OMFG wait.

As I was reading this, I started chuckling along as in "yeah but if I could create a version of myself that didn't have to sit through GoT S8 LOL LOL LOL" and then I realised... that is not using severance to offload my suffering, it's the other way around. Kind of like how Mark used it not to feel the grief/guilt of losing Gemma. He technically didn't use his innie so he would have to bear the suffering, he used it so his innie did NOT have to bear the suffering for 8 hours a day. "I thought I was sparing you from that pain". And it worked.

WHICH... isn't it basically what they were doing with Cold Harbor? Gemma's final innie wasn't the one bearing the brunt of the suffering, she was the one lifting the suffering from Gemma's shoulders.

SO... maybe the reason Mark was so essential for Cold Harbor was because he was someone who used the severance procedure to offload his pain from his innie, rather than the other way around, like it was used by the senator and his wife so she wouldn't have to go through childbirth, or all the other Gemma innies who were supposed to keep the pain IN the room, rather than out of the room. So maybe he was particularly suited to refining numbers for a chip like that? Not because Gemma was his wife and they had some special kind of connection (which they canonically did not have).

and obviously you find yourself thinking oh i do wish i could get severed to do this one thing. would you actually maybe not. but you do wish you didn't have to undergo medical procedures you do wish you didn't have to do the things that give you anxiety you do wish you didn't have to do tedious tasks that barely even require you to be present for them. it's tempting. that's why the premise works. but the premise is also that somebody has to do it. somebody has to go to the dentist and somebody has to get on that plane and somebody has to write those thank you notes. just like somebody has to clean the house and somebody has to harvest the food you eat and somebody has to make the clothes you wear. you can't eliminate inconvenience you can only delegate it. you can't eliminate suffering you can only delegate it. and always the easiest way to live with this is to see that somebody as less than. less than you less than people. and if that somebody has to wear your body to do it well maybe it's not all that different. they're not a person. you are. it's capitalism all the way down baby

The “mad scientist” trope is becoming a lost art, kudos to severance for embracing it so gloriously. She shows up, she kills people, she (probably) stalks you, she steals your snacks and moves into your basement, she’ll do experimental brain surgery any time any place. And she’s kind of adorable.
