Blaze's Compendium Entry #9:Explaining the Origin of ShikiOuji

Note: This post was originally published in April 2024. However, since it is a complete research and dive into this monster, I figured out i could just repost it as a Compendium entry.

As always:

Warning: Faith and religion are important real life topics, that tackles the culture and way of life of millions of real life people. It is a cultural expression, and must be respected by all means. Here, we use a video-game ( some times) and other media series only to ignite the flame of learning about the matter, using its art when well depicted, but we do this with all due respect to the cultures we talk here, grounded by real life sources, cultures and people. And i mean this with respect. Hope you all enjoy.

I am sure that, if you played any Megaten game in the last 20 years or so, you ended up seeing this paper dude. His name is always stated as Shiki-Ouji, and he once shared the same design with the Demon called Shikigami.

The weird thing is that when researching Shikigami on my studies, I never found anything about this one so i put some detective work to find out about the origins of Shikiouji, the (yet another) dude who often repels physical damage in Megaten.

The creature is described in many of the series compendium as a powerful Shikigami, that only the most powerful Onmyoji could summon, and they have a vicious temperament.

When we talk about Shikigami, the first thing that comes to mind are paper dolls. This is no surprise, since Shikigami are summons Onmyoji binds to paper dolls or talismans, so they could interact with the physical world. This is also because paper is a very easy material to destroy, if things go south. Onmyoji are the equivalent of western sorcerer, that followed the Onmyōdō, a esoteric cosmology. It started in the 6th century in Japan as a divination practice, and evolved from there. I won't go into detail, because this is meant to be a short post. But materials about this practice are abundant on the internet.

The main concept concerning us here is the Shikigami. These are basically some kind of familiar, a spirit or demon if you want, the sorcerer could conjure to protect him or do his biding. The Cultural Alliance Brazil- Japan, which i already mentioned in other posts, states that:

''Shikigami can be Oni or demons, that should serve and protect an Onmyoji. Your abilities would be determined by the abilities of his master.

A Shikigami could assume the form of small animals, birds, etc... One Shikigami from a powerful Onmyoji could possess and control one animal. But only a real powerful Shikigami could possess a person.

When an Onmyoji is fighting another Onmyoji, they employ the use of their Shikigami. Some Onmyoji could spot the enemy Shikigami beforehand, and try to convert it to his side with magical powers. In this game, the converted Shikigami would come back to the old master, and attack with double the force. This pratice was called Shikigami Gaeshi.

Abe no Seimei is said to be the most powerful Onmyoji to ever exist. Some rumors say he had twelve Shikigami, while regular Onmyoji would rarely have more than one Shikigami at the same time.''

So, that is a rough definition of what a Shikigami is.

But, when researching this creature you would not be able to regularly find Shiki-ouji. The fastest method for him to appear, was the English Wikipedia article about Shikigami, which weirdly had this part about Shiki-ouji, but offered no source to it:

Having the kanji to Shikiouji, and some keywords, i found someone at Tumblr who asked the same question 6 years ago, in Eirikr's blog.

From there, Eirikr offered a link to a blog post writing about Izanagi Ryu Shikoku. Ryu Shikoku is an ancient folk religion and pratices from the Kochi prefecture. It is still practiced in the area to this day!

In this belief system there is the tradition of the Shiki-kui masks. Which.. bear a very uncanny resemblance to our paper guy, subject to this post:

These masks would be hang above the place the ceremonies of the Izanagi Ryu take place. They would have magical powers that could repel evil spirits, and non believers from coming to the ceremony and disturbing it. They would also serve as talismans, or paper dolls, in a simmilar vein the regular Shikigami pop image you have in mind.

Since they are used to summon spirits, bind them, and as talismans, these creatures can be, technically called a Shikigami.

With this knowledge in hands, i went to the Japanese web. And sure enough, i found this site: The Nippon Foundation Library. It has an article detailing the paper talismans used by Izanagi No Ryu Onmyoji, and their meanings, powers, and also explained a bit about Shiki-Ouji!

Here is what they have to say: (Please be warned that i do not speak Japanese, and used machine translation. Any corrections are Welcome!)

Shikē Ōji is a spiritual entity invoked by the taisa during prayers for the sick and the "toriwake" ritual to expel evil spirits causing illness or calamity. Its birth is described as abnormal, and due to its excessively violent power, it has no place to reside. Usually, it is sunk in the pond of Tendō-nanta, and summoned only when needed to guard ceremonies, to pray as the guardian deity of ceremonies, or as a prayer deity of Jumon no hakase. There seem to be several types of Shikē Ōji depending on their purpose, such as Takata no Ōji for toriwake, Gotai no Ōji for prayers for the sick, and Ōtaka-shiki for insect prayers. Additionally, talismans such as Sangoku Arashiki, Chimura San Ōji, and Sakago no Ōji are handed down, and it is inferred that they were used according to the content of the prayers, although many details of their usage are unknown.

Using the powerful Shikē Ōji against humans becomes a curse. In Kochi Prefecture, "hitting a ceremony" is widely used to curse people. Many people use this term without understanding its original meaning. "Hitting a ceremony" refers to attacking someone using Shikē Ōji. While Shikē Ōji can benefit people if used for good, it can harm them if used for evil. Talismans of Shikē Ōji, possessing such terrifying power, often have several incisions on them, each containing twelve notches, giving them a rough impression. However, unlike talismans found in mountains and rivers, they do not seem to have incisions for eyes or mouths. In this regard, they are closer to the cutting style of talismans for house gods and sacred gods. Here, one can sense the emphasis on the powerful nature of Shikē Ōji's talismans while also distinguishing them from strange monsters.

So, as you can see there is some key information about the creature here. But the most important ones:

1- It is bind to a talisman, just like other Shikigami. The text here explains it is a paper talisman with notches, just like regular ones used in religious ceremonies.

2-It has a powerful and violent nature, just like the compendium often indicates in Megaten games. It seems hard to tame and use properly without getting hurt.

3-Shiki-Ouji can be powerful and violent, but it seems they dislike being used to hurt people. Instead, they are better employed to use their magic to other deeds. However if you still use them in that regard, they will most likely curse you.

4-Their talismans have twelve notches, no incision for eyes and mouth due to their aggressive nature. This would help to control their interaction with the material world.

I am sure that, if we follow this trail we will find many more sources. Going by key words i found in this text, i found many other sites and books, but since i have no time now to fall a rabbit hole, nor do i speak Japanese... That is it, i think this is a satisfactory answer to where this Megaten Demon came from!

The real forms of Shiki-Ouji

The last thing in want to talk about, is Shiki-Ouji real appearance. Since we have a seemingly wrong impression of they in Megaten, since Kaneko took some artistic freedoms.

First and foremost: From the few things i studies about Shikigami, we know they do not have a real physical form. The paper talismans are just a way to give them physical form. But it was incredibly hard to find a Shiki-Ouji talisman, which was weird because it was so distinguishable. The main reason being that: Shiki-Ouji seems not to be believed to be easy or safe to summon, and also their talismans would be destroyed asap after use.

But with the description i got, it would be this one that matches it the most:

No eyes, or mouth. Twelve Notches, six from each side, and some incisions. Very similar to a regular talisman found in other types of ceremony. Just as the text suggested.

Tosa, Monobe Village: Shapes of the Gods

Monoba being the village where most of these rituals came from. The book is from 1999, and contains many pictures of actual talismans.

You can see that, aside from the head shape, Kaneko took some freedom with this design. The sources state that Shikiouji talismans should not have a face, nor limbs, since it was too powerful, and should have 12 notches. For some reason, Kaneko drew it in a human-like form, but the face still resembled the Shiki-kui masks. The earlier design of the demon was even more closely resembling the masks:

Shiki-ouji earlier design from Devil Summoner (1996). It was later repurposed as the demon Shikigami. It is almost an exact match to this talisman. I can not however identify the original source.

Shiki-Ouji current design by itself could have been based on this one talisman in specific, at least some parts of it like the head with horned-shaped appendages:

By the looks of it, its face could turn inside out, just like the Megaten Demon can do.

It was sourced by the National Museum of Japanese History, but the post went down. The low quality image of the talisman can still be seen on google, but the link is dead, unfortunately. It seems that this item is still in possession of the Museum in Japan. Kaneko could have seen it in pictures, or in person. This one seems NOT to be displaying a Shiki-Ouji thought.

Maybe the Kaneko take is that Shiki-Ouji was summoned with limbs, and facial features and became much more stronger as a result? We may never know...

And finally there is also an occult book that i found in Amazon Japan that is called: Exploring Izanagi No Ryu: ShikiOuji.

It is supposedly a manual on how to practice Izanagi no Ryu, and magics. I could not find the book online, just the summary. But it mentioned nothing about Shiki-Ouji. Probably has some sort of tutorial to summon it, in fact i was able to find many of those tutorials on the Japanese web.

Now, that is it. I think this puts to rest a little bit of mystery involving the origins of this specific demon. Kaneko sure took some freedoms, but it is still one of the more popular and recognizable characters in the series.

Final considerations:

This most likely is the answer to its origin, but i am not some sort of owner of all truths, so feel free to correct me in anything i said wrong. I am still an amateur scholar, and even if i do know a lot about mythology and ancient religions because i read many books and study a lot of hours of my days, i am by no means a specialist in Japanese Mythology specifically, specially Shikigami practices. The reason is that, i find it very difficult and time consuming to research Japanese sources, since i do not speak Japanese. I will one day, try my best since there are a lot of good Yokai to cover in future Scientific Papers.

I can, however, guarantee that i did my best possible effort in a deep search!

And i have spent a lot of time looking through pictures of Shikigami talismans, and i found some really cute. Like this one. What a whimsical little fella...

Day 11: SONUEGL = lounges

As June unfolds into July, Kurt is a cat in the sunshine. His whole existence is warm and gold-dipped and he feels obscenely grateful and lucky. He doesn’t even mind Elliott’s constant ribbing about how happy he is. Because he is.

The inaugural show at Muse is drawing to its close and has been by all accounts a great success. The gallery is in the black, which is unheard of in these early days. Several artists have asked about exhibiting and there seems to be an ever-increasing stream of patrons with means and enthusiasm.

Serena Mbali’s name and Rachel Berry’s notoriety have done wonders in a very short time. Serena’s works have sold well, three of Elliott’s paintings have little red stickers on their title cards, and Kurt has sold every piece on the gallery wall. His head spins when he thinks about it.

He’s dropped his Thursday shift at the restaurant entirely, feeling cautiously optimistic that he can get by, now that Elliott’s able to pay him for his gallery shifts. He uses the extra time in the studio, caught in a spiral of inspiration-creation-bliss-inspiration that he’s never experienced before.

And then there’s Blaine.

Kurt’s had his share of relationships, ranging from a couple of one night stands, when the mood was right, to Eric, who lasted a year and a half before his career took him to the West Coast and out of Kurt’s life. But he’s never had anything like this. He’s been utterly swept off his feet. By a lawyer.

On Fridays, they go out. Usually to somewhere fancy that Kurt never dreamed he’d see. They’ve ridden through Central Park in a horse and carriage like tourists and on a gondola while Blaine fed Kurt sugar-dipped strawberries. They’ve had dinner at the Empire State Building and Kochi and seen Broadway shows and Kurt’s first opera at the Met.

It was awkward at first. He was uncomfortable with the ostentation and wealth that seems entirely unremarkable to Blaine. But Blaine never seems like he’s preening or bragging or even concerned. He does things because he wants to and he can , and Kurt just needs to relax. He feels pampered and adored and giddy with it.

On Saturdays, Kurt lounges in Blaine’s bed for as long as he can before heading to Muse for the day. They lie there and talk lazily about nothing and everything, kissing and giggling and dreaming. They take turns making each other breakfast or dance around each other in the kitchen as they cook together.

And of course, between Friday nights and Saturday mornings, they fuck. Heated and intense and gentle and nuanced, loving and frenzied. It’s pure ecstasy and Kurt can’t get enough.

He feels stupid talking to Elliott. Like he’s a kid or naive or both. But if he doesn’t get out of his own head and get some perspective, he’s going to explode. Or eat an entire cheesecake. Or something. They’re in the living room drinking wine when Kurt brings it up.

“Do you think I need to ask Blaine if we’re exclusive?”

Elliott looks mildly confused when he replies, “Why are you asking me?”

“I don’t know,” Kurt sighs. “I don’t trust myself? Like, what if I ask and he’s insulted that I even had to ask, because of course we are. Or what if I don’t ask so he assumes I don’t want to be? Or what if he just laughs at me because I’m making a big thing out of nothing –”

“Kurt,” Elliott interrupts gently, ‘does it feel like nothing?”

“No,” Kurt tells him. “It kind of feels like everything.”

Elliott’s lips tighten into a tiny, repressed smile. “You need to talk to him,” he prods.

“I know,” Kurt groans. “I know I do. But I just … I don’t wanna jinx it. It’s been so perfect I just don’t want to make waves, you know? I’m ridiculous.”

“You love him?” Elliott’s voice is quiet and his eyes are intent on Kurt’s face.

“I don’t,” Kurt replies. “Not fully. Not yet. But I’m starting to. Or I could. But sometimes it feels like he has all the power and that’s – Oh my god, never mind.”

“Kurt, that’s not okay.” Elliott suddenly looks concerned. “You guys need to be on equal footing if a relationship is going to work. You can’t be feeling less than. And he can’t be in charge all the time. That’s not right.”

“Oh god, no.” Kurt rushes to reassure him. “It’s just me. My head. It’s not anything he’s doing. I guess I just feel… inferior sometimes. Because he’s able to give me so much. And I can’t give him anything.”

Elliott’s eyebrows shoot upward and his face is earnest when he says, “Kurt, I’m pretty sure you’re giving him something he wants. He’s still here, isn’t he?”

“Was that a sex joke?” Kurt asks.

“It really wasn’t,” Elliott says, in that plainly honest way he has. “I mean, if you’re being truthful that he’s not lording it over you or anything, then it sounds like you just need to come to terms with the fact that you’ve got yourself a boyfriend who can spoil you if he wants to.”

“Is he my boyfriend, though?” Kurt whines.

And now Elliott does laugh. “Oh my god, Kurt. Talk to him.”

Kurt doesn’t talk to him. The timing hasn’t been right. He will. He’s going to, but right now Kurt’s still waiting tables and making art and helping Elliott change over the show in the gallery.

Several of the pieces from the first show, including all of Kurt’s except one, were sold online to anonymous collectors. In the sales records for each of them is a note reading, ‘ agent will call ,’ so those need to be packed up.

Elliott’s unsold pieces will stay. He’s the gallery owner and it’s a good conversation starter to have some of his own work on display. But they move it further back.

The modular walls are moved into a new configuration and artists for the next show are coming in to hang their work. Posters and fliers and press releases are designed and typed. Kurt feels like a professional artist for maybe the first time in his life. It’s a strange, wonderful, giddy feeling.

Blaine sends him flowers. Or has lunch delivered for both him and Elliott. Or texts let me know the minute you're free, and Kurt is just over the moon with how perfect his life feels right now.

Which is why it’s such a dizzying fall when it all goes wrong.

The Returning Heroes

The Dekarangers fight space criminals and protect people's peace and safety. Sainei Ryuji-san and Hayashi Tsuyoshi-san, who play the roles of the famous duo Ban and Hoji, talk about their thoughts on the new film.

Ban (Akaza Banban): A former detective of the Earth Branch, he's now active in the Special Unit Fire Squad. He used to be reckless, but over the years, he's learned to use better judgment.

Hoji (Tomasu Houji): A serious, calm and composed detective of the Earth Branch, who's an exceptional marksman. While he does recognize Ban's abilities, when called "partner," he always responds with, "Don't call me partner." _

SPD: Special Police Dekaranger

20 years ago, six detectives from the Space Police's Earth Branch confronted the Space Criminals Alienizer. They've gathered again after such a long time, and launch an investigation into a large explosion. In pursuit of their suspect, Raenjo, the six must face the grand plan left behind by her husband, the galactic drug lord Tarewarane.

The 28th Super Sentai series, "Tokusou Sentai Dekaranger," which aired on TV from 2004 to 2005, is currently screening its newest film in theaters. As one of the most popular series, Dekaranger has often had sequels produced since its broadcast ended. This film, made on the occasion of its 20th Anniversary, contains many topics, such as the appearance of a new form for DekaRed, and location filming in Kochi, but the relationship between Ban and Hoji is most noteworthy.

Ban steps away to teach and guide the newcomer, while Hoji remains the same at the frontlines. As his "partner," Hoji has mixed feelings about Ban, who's lost his reckless side from 20 years ago. The drama of friendship between the two men, portrayed through the incident, is sure to be felt even by former fans. Fighting coolly with passionate hearts, we hope that you'll be able to witness the courage of Dekaranger in its 20th year.

Sainei Ryuji x Hayashi Tsuyoshi Interview

-In the next production, Hoji will be…?!-

"Please tell us your thoughts after reading the script for this film."

Sainei: Honestly, I thought the details didn't have a 20th Anniversary feel to them. However, it seems like the Producer's aim was to not do anything special, and that they wanted us to work on it without it being overbearing.

Hayashi: I also felt like it was an extension of the main TV series. Of course, there are depictions that'll make you feel the passage of time.

Sainei: Among other things, I think that the relationship and feelings Ban and Hoji have for each other, and their conflicts about what hasn't and has changed were depicted well.

"Did you do any preparation before filming began?"

Hayashi: Weirdly enough, I can become Hoji naturally as soon as I flip the switch. As my debut work, I have alot of memories, as well as a strong emotional attachment to it. That being the case, I decided to recreate the look and feel of my original appearance in order to make it more enjoyable for the fans. With Ban in particular, the other members have changed alot, from their hair to their clothes, so I thought of atleast getting my hairstyle back. I spent nearly a year growing it out, and I changed it from being black as seen during the 10th Anniversary (Dekaranger: 10 YEARS AFTER) to a more natural brown color. I don't have a perm, but when I get my makeup done, I have them add abit of a wave to make it look like I have a perm. Even when I was asked to cut my hair for other jobs, they were understanding when I explained things to them.

Sainei: I myself didn't do anything.

Hayashi: So cool (laughs). Still, you become Ban in no time, right?

Sainei: Yeah, that's right. Director Watanabe even said, "I thought you'd become an adult after 20 years, but when you say your lines, it's amazing how you return to being Ban."

"How have your impressions of each other changed over the past 20 years?"

Sainei: Tsuyoshi and Kinoshita-san are the only ones among our members who can genuinely say, "My profession is being an actor." Including myself, the other four do a variety of things, and acting is one of them. It's difficult to continue doing one thing for 20 years, but I think we've gained something by doing so. I felt that the two of them, who've been actors for a long time, were different from the rest of us.

Hayashi: As a full time actor, if you ask me, it's the other way around. I think you have to learn alot in order to be able to take on various challenges.

Sainei: I couldn't take the dissatisfaction that comes with an acting career, so I left. I'm sure there must be things that've happened during Tsuyoshi's acting career that he absolutely couldn't stand. It's truly amazing that you've been an actor for so long while enduring it all.

Hayashi: I've felt this way since back then, but unlike Ban, Ryuji's smart and has composure. And now, 20 years later, I feel like he has a much more curious mind to pursue something. This may be an old fashioned expression, but I think he's going to become a really nice, handsome old man. As usual, he possesses something I don't have, moreover, his capability has become greater.

"What are some key points you'd like people to especially pay attention to in this film?"

Sainei: I'd like you to pay attention to the Suit Actors this time. Especially Fukuzawa-san, who became an Action Director over the past 20 years, and is also a Director for Kamen Rider. Not only was he the Action Director, but he himself played the role of Premiere DekaRed, and not only was he able to move well, but he also added a sense of weight to it, which was truly wonderful. Anime fans watching anime pay attention to Voice Actors and think, "They can do this kind of voice" or, "They can do this kind of performance," right? I hope that the audience will enjoy the film from that same point of view and think, "This Suit Actor is in it, and he can move like that" or, "It has more weight than before." I hope that the profession of being a Suit Actor will be recognized with more respect.

Hayashi: If I had to name a scene in which I appeared in, it would be the untransformed action scene with Naoko-san, who plays DekaPink in this film. I was the only one among our members who had an action scene this time, and it was the first time for me to do an action scene with Naoko-san. At first, they planned to cut alot of the film, but Fukuzawa-san said, "Tsuyoshi can do it," and we were almost able to do the whole thing from a single angle. Even though I don't normally do action scenes, Naoko-san did a great job of making me look strong and cool, while Fukuzawa-san skillfully made it look appealing. I don't mean to steal Ryuji's words, but I realized that there are many areas where we shine due to the presence of the Suit Actors, so I hope that you'll pay close attention to them.

"So far, Dekaranger has produced multiple sequels, and we think there are those who are anticipating even more sequels."

Sainei: As I mentioned in the beginning, including the way it ends, there's not much special about this one. So, I personally think it'd be better to do some sort of production with a conclusion, or a grand finale. However, I feel that if we don't do it within the next five years, it'll start to become tough for everyone. Especially from the point of view of the audience. The gap between their memories of that time and the present is becoming increasingly large. If we're going to do something for the 25th Anniversary, we need an idea of what we can do. If we're talking about characters, Hoji should definitely die in the line of duty.

Hayashi: What the heck! (laughs).

Sainei: It's fine, it'll be an unexpected role (laughs).

Hayashi: It's true that unexpected is good, but… (laughs). After what happened to Teresa (character who appeared in episode 37 of the TV series), why can't he be rewarded in the end? Everyone else is grabbing ahold of their own happiness, so it'd be good for Hoji to have some sort of redeeming part too, right?

Sainei: I see. Something like marriage?

Hayashi: Right. After his wedding, when Hoji's child is born, Ban would say something like, "My partner's become happy."

Sainei: Seems like it raises a death flag, no? (laughs).

Hayashi: It certainly raises a death flag! (laughs). In the final scene, Hoji's child would say something like, "I'd like to partner up with Ban-san" and then Ban will say, "Well then, I'll wait until you've grown up" and then it ends……I'd be fine with that (laughs). _

Eternal Combination The members of Earth Branch, including Hoji, Sen, Jasmine, Umeko and Tetsu, and the other Dekarangers, Chief Doggie Kruger, and mechanic Shiratori Swan, are all still alive and well in this film. With a combination of skills, they conduct a massive search across the entire universe.

Promising Newcomer Edogawa Rui, a member of Fire Squad, appears in this film as Ban's junior. He's a promising newcomer who's been entrusted with the SP1 License by Ban. While cool and reasonable, during the investigation, he has his doubts about the overly unusual approach used by the members of Earth Branch.

The Special Police go to Kochi While Ban, Umeko and Rui head for the Alienizer Special Zone, and Hoji and Jasmine head for the planet Chima, where Raenjo, the suspect in this case used to live, Sen and Tetsu fly to Kochi. They try to get in touch with Mokumisu, a Ridomihan who's familiar with plants, and yet…..?

Premiere DekaRed The Suit Actor for Premiere DekaRed, DekaRed's new form, is Fukuzawa Hirofumi-san, who played DekaRed in the TV series and is the Action Director for this film. Make sure to pay attention to the special action performed by this Super Sentai legend.

Absolute Flawless Teamwork! With all mysteries unraveled, the curtains rise for the final decisive battle between the Dekarangers and Alienizers. Blinking is prohibited as you watch the battle scenes featuring the sleek teamwork of the six, the efforts of the Dekaranger Robos, and Premiere DekaRed's standout performance!

Kagome Higurashi was not the type to seek revenge. She had a temper, sure, but there were other ways to regulate her emotions. She'd become an expert at it during her time in the feudal era, especially when it came to Inuyasha and his wavering heart.

She didn't blame him for it. He and Kikyou had been put through the wringer, doomed from the start by Onigumo's jealousy and warped obsession. It had broken her heart every time he'd disappeared, seeking out another when she was right in front of him. And each time made it harder to believe she'd mean that much to anyone.

She'd gotten over it, eventually, though she'd had to close off her heart to do it. She'd wished the jewel away and been given the choice between worlds.

She'd chosen to go home.

Leaving her friends had been hard; she hoped they'd known why, hoped that they knew she was safe. Not happy, but safe. She'd tried to be happy. She'd finished high school at the top of her class, gotten a scholarship, and was well on her way to opening her own practice. She'd thought to share that success with her boyfriend, Kenta, but he'd decided to share their bed with some trollop he'd met while vacationing in Kochi.

He liked to throw his money around, and clearly Himeko liked it as well, as she'd been draped in diamonds and expensive lingerie when Kagome had discovered them. She'd always told Kenta to save his money. They didn't need the latest technology or the high-end restaurants; they could make memories without flashing his credit cards around.

Apparently, that was the wrong answer.

Kagome gripped the can of spray paint in her hand. Apparently, Kenta should've thought twice before cheating on her. And rubbing it in her face after the fact when she confronted them. Never being good enough for Inuyasha was one thing—being told she'd never be good enough for anyonewas something else.

She adjusted her sunglasses, the dark lenses shielding her from the glare of the skyline as well as the possibility of being recognized. Kenta still used the student parking lot, and since there were no cameras around, it was the perfect place to teach him a lesson.

Fuck with Kagome Higurashi, and she'll fuck with your car.

The Call

Weeks after capture, Ander Sahota is allowed one call home.

“Five minutes. Once your time is up, I'm taking the phone back, whether you're finished or not.”

Ander nodded silently, still hardly able to believe that Shepard was allowing this at all. He was afraid the phone would be taken away at the last second, or that it had been some cruel trick all along. He was sitting on Shepard's bed, the bed they shared, waiting for more instructions as Shepard stood over him.

“I assume whoever you decide to contact is someone who will want to know what's happened to you. I'm sure it goes without saying that you won't spill a word, mhm?”

“Mm… mhm.” Ander stared at the phone in the older man's hand. A brick, his friends would've called it. An ancient thing. To Ander, it may as well be a lifeline.

“If they do ask you what you've been getting up to, why you haven't called sooner, what will you say, little spy?”

“I have a new job,” Ander rehearsed. “It's highly secretive. I can't talk about it. It's important.”

“That's right. Do you think you're ready?”

“I am.”

Shepard licked his lips. “Do you want to know what happens if you say the wrong thing?”

He didn't. “What happens?”

“If you tell them anything about your shiny new location or lifestyle, if you tell them anything about me, I'll have no choice but to locate the person on the other side of this phone.” He held it up. “And eliminate a loose end. Understood?”

“U-understood.”

Shepard set the phone in his lap, sliding a hand around the back of Ander's neck and bringing his mouth to his ear.

“And that's only after I beat the shit out of you for disobedience. Mhm?”

“Mhm.” He didn't even dare to breathe until Shepard let him go. Even with the phone in his hands and the need to speak to his mother, to comfort her, Ander didn't want to make the call. He didn't want to mess it up in front of Shepard, especially now that he knew what was at stake. He felt sick to his stomach, but Shepard was staring at him. Waiting.

Slowly, Ander dialed his mother's number. He almost hoped she wouldn't pick up, but at the same time, he needed her to. Even if it hurt, he needed a reminder that there was still a world outside this compound, that other people still drove their cars and laughed with friends and cooked for each other, even if he couldn't.

She didn't pick up right away. He could picture her sitting at the kitchen table, bent over a book of word puzzles, frowning at a number she didn't recognize. She was always suspicious, always complained to him about strange phone numbers calling for no reason, but she always answered them anyway.

Finally, he heard a soft click. “Hello?”

His breath caught when he heard her voice. How long had it been? Even before Shepard took him, it had been a few months since he'd visited her, and he hadn't called her before his last mission. He should've called her before he left, before he'd been caught and hurt and changed.

Ander swallowed, trying to ensure his voice came out steady. “Mom?”

There was a breath of silence, then the other end of the line was filled with words, some in English, some Bengali, all too quick for him to pick out what she was saying, but he could hear the worry, hear her voice start to break, and it made his chest tighten, threatening to fill his eyes with tears.

He couldn't let himself cry. She had to know he was okay.

Shepard was staring at him expectantly. Five minutes. He only had five minutes.

“Mom,” he said again. “I—I’m sorry I didn't call sooner. I have a new job—”

“I've been worried, Kochi.”

Kochi, his childhood nickname. His Daak Naam, his mother had explained when he was young, a name just for the family to use. He had to bite down on his tongue to try and jar himself back to sense, away from the memories. He only had five minutes.

“I know you've been worried. I'm sorry. I'm alright, I promise.”

“It's been so long. When will you visit me?”

Shepard caught Ander's eye, tapped on his watch, and Ander took a deep breath.

“I have a new job,” he said in the same tone he'd rehearsed with. “It’s very secretive, and I can't talk about it, but it's important.” He took another breath, shakier this time. “And I'm okay.”

“You must come see me. Next month.”

“I—I can't.”

“You can't visit your own mother?”

Tears squeezed themselves free when he closed his eyes. “I have a job to do, mom. I'll… I'll see you when I can, but I don't know when.”

“Kochi… are you sure you're alright?” The concern in her voice twisted into his chest like a knife.

“I am. I'm okay.” He managed to get the words out without his voice breaking. He didn't know how.

One minute, Shepard mouthed.

“I—I have to go soon.”

“Already? You only just called. Tell me, how is your new job? Is your boss kind?”

He wasn't. He was.

“Yes,” Ander said. “It's good. I'm… learning so much.”

“Good, good.”

Shepard held up his watch. Thirty seconds.

“I love you,” Ander said. “I promise, I'll call you again when I can.”

“And come visit. No job is worth more than your family.”

“I—I will, mama.”

“I love you,” she said. “Āmi ābāra tōmāra sāthē dēkhā karaba.”

I will see you again.

Shepard held out his hand for the phone, and Ander placed it in the man's palm, no longer able to hold back his tears. He hunched forward, chest hitching with sobs he tried to keep quiet. Shepard rubbed his back.

“Shhh. I know. It can be difficult to leave your old life behind.”

He wasn't leaving her behind, was he? He couldn't, she wanted him to visit, next month she'd said—

Shepard pulled him into a hug, and Ander buried his face in the man's chest, his head hot and stuffy from trying to keep his own grief contained.

Grief. It was grief, wasn't it? Not just sadness, or the feeling of missing his loved ones. He was grieving the loss of people who were still alive.

He was the dead one. He was the one who'd been lost.

Shepard pulled away, holding Ander by the shoulders. “Alright, little spy. Deep breaths. We still have training today.”

Ander sniffled. “W-will I be able to call her again?”

“Hmm. Perhaps, but you'll need to earn it.”

“Will I be able to see her?”

At that, the older man laughed. “Oh, Ander. I think you already know the answer.”

He did. As long as he was Shepard's, the other man wouldn't let him go, not even for a little bit. Strangely, there was no sudden rush of despair at Shepard's words, no new sadness crushing his chest. Just something numb. Empty.

If that was the case, if he'd… if he'd never see his mother again, maybe it would be easier to not call. To let her grieve too.

After all, he was already dead.

Nov 2022 Wk 3

Being a highly subjective assessment of one tiny corner of the interwebs. Organized by which ones (in each category) I’m enjoying the most.

Ongoing Series - Thai

Between Us (Sun iQIYI) 3 of 12 - I’m beginning to get concerned about where the plot, pace, and conflict is going to come from. So far it’s all angst and internal conflict, and I’m not entirely opposed to that, but there needs to be some external stressors in Thai BL or it’s not enough to carry 12 episodes (especially if it’s helmed by New). WATCH ALONG HERE.

Ai Long Nhai (Mon iQIYI) 9 of 10 - something actually happened in this ep, we got some of Ai’s family history & backstory. Evil mother is evil. Sister may be evil too. But it’s still shirtless so I’m pleased. Also, yay, no singing!

Remember Me (Sun Gaga) 7 of 12 - Name has finally made a new friend. JaFirst remain the most interesting. I actually don’t mind the show when it’s focused on them, but most of the rest of the time I find it, if not boring, at least not something that engages me personally. Although, the younger boy flirting with Em after cheer practice was kind of cute.

I Will Knock You (Fri Gaga) 2 of 12 - Thi is such a pushover. Look, I’m just not wild about this lead pair dynamic and I absolutely can’t stand the score.

609 Bedtime Story (Sat WeTV) 1 of 11 - Didn’t drop to WETV in my territory, no idea what’s going on. I’ll have a bit of a hunt when I get home.

Ongoing Series - Not Thai

My Tooth Your Love (Taiwan Fri Viki) 8 of 12 - Every week I look forward to this show the most. We knew it had to happen, but it’s really sad to see our traumatized bar-boy break our beloved dentist’s heart. We all know they’re in love with each other, they also know it. But Bai Lang is very very scared of commitment and the dentist is a good boy who keeps getting hurt by other’s inability to trust and open up. The past romance was really sad and sadly true to life. Is it better to have a friend’s love or pity, if all you really wanted was friendship? I like how complicated all of these characters are. I love the conversation the leads had with each other after Bai Lang finally admits to his true feelings. Such a good show.

Eternal Yesterday AKA Eien no Kino (Japan Thurs Gaga) 6 of 8 - This show is so sad. I sometimes wonder if Kochi remains alive entirely because Michan wills him to be so. Does anybody else wonder if the gay biology teacher who lost his first love is a nod to Boys Love? Just me?

Choco Milk Shake (Korea Strongberry Tues YT) 7-8 of 10 - The pacing is so good in this show. Also, I am completely and utterly in love with the ex-bf (hi, Wild Dog, long time no see, wanna run away with me instead?)

Happy Ending Romance (Korea Thurs Gaga) 1-2 of 8 - Very dramatic opening. I like it. Leo is stupid pretty. This is a complicated, if improbable, plot about writers and ego and reputation, but engaging. (For a change I like the OST, Leo is also one of my favorite main singers among the honey-voices of Kpop.)

Finished This Week

Ghost Host, Ghost House (Weds YouTube) 8fin - An excellent confession sequence. I was a little surprised. Usually confession scenes make me wince, but this one was lovely. I’m not a fan of the Kdrama “separation in the final episode” (see Big D) but in this particular instance, I understand why they did it. The characters did need to mature and build new lives. It’s just annoying that they couldn’t do it together. All in all? This is a light horror plus family drama built around a well executed BL trough-line that felt honestly queer with great chemistry from the lead pair. (I hope that we see more of them.) For me personally the surrounding cast, premise, and story didn’t resonate but if you like a touch of gothic in your BL this might appeal. RECOMMENDED WITH RESERVATIONS 7/10

Big Dragon (Sat Gaga) 8fin - I really don’t like Thailand copying Korea’s arbitrary “separation in the final episode” thing. So for me this final episode wasn’t very satisfying. Ultimately? This is a decent execution of enemies to lovers, exploring some darker themes and nodding at kink in a more respectful way than Mame could ever dream, plus excellent chemistry, but something was askew around plot, directing, and ending. RECOMMENDED FOR THE LEAD PAIR, BUT NOT MUCH ELSE 7/10

Kabe Koji (Japan Mon Viki) 8fin - Japan sure does love the “running of the gays” trope. Only this time around they ran together. Which was kind of cute. Honestly? This probably should’ve been my favorite BL of all time, but for some reason it just never resonated with me. Also, I’m over the no kiss thing. I’m tired. If they kiss in het, they can kiss in gay. IT’S FINE. 7/10

Apparently, when Japanese BL is good, it’s very very good, and when it’s bad I’m annoyed.

It’s Airing But I’m Not Watching It

War of Y (Thai Gaga) 20 eps - it’s just all too much for me.

To Sir With Love AKA Khun Chai 16 eps - could be sad v worried

2 Moons 3 (Thai Mon ??) 10 eps - Possibly a future binge watch. Rumor is it’s banal.

Love Bill (Vietnam Sat YT) - Bah Vinh is back but I’m too distracted. Also there’s a lot of fund raising and stuff going on. I’ll wait and binge.

How is he so hot? Asking for science.

In Case You Missed It

My Roommate (Thai YT) 32 eps of 2 minutes each now done, it’s terrible production values so I’m not bothering but it’s been repackaged into 8 min chunks on the youtubes.

Fahlanruk (Thai GaGa) 12 eps - I cut my losses at ep 5 but it’s finished now, someone who knows my taste tell me if I should I bother?

SELF (Thai Thurs YT) is complete at 6 eps, anyone watch this one? Is it sad? Worth watching?

LITA special - it’s exactly as trashy and kinky as you want it to be. Go indulge, you lushes. Rain & Payu, man, wow. Also, the sound is terrible. But no one cares much about the script, least of all the writers.

GAP the series (Sat YT) is a classic office set romance. WATCH IT! It’s GL and this studio needs our support! (Also, the stairs are back!)

Coming to Viki: Love in the Air, ITSAY & IPYTM, Remember Me, and new KBL, The New Employee.

Gossip:

GMMTV posted their pilot trailers for 2023. I reported on them all here. Fewer this year than last which is a good thing, they should slow down and focus more.

How did my predictions go? Not good. Scored a 6/10 maybe 6.5 if you’re feeling generous.

What's a criminally underrated ship you love? any fandom tbh

Hi thanks for the ask! :)

For JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, my favorite underrated ship is Polnareff/Abdul, but it's not that underrated, just nowhere near as popular as Jotaro/Kakyoin. Kars/Esidisi doesn't get enough love either, but they should bc they ended their entire race and raised two kids together, that's good ship material right there.

For Kagurabachi, I don't know if it's underrated but Kunishige/Shiba has some angst to it, maybe a bit of a situationship deal. Also, Hiyuki/Tafuku has an interesting dynamic, but I think it's been overshadowed by Chihiro/Hiyuki.

For JJK, I would have said HaiNana but it seems like it's not as much of a rare pair as I thought, so I'll go with Sukuna/Uraume for a master/servant type of dynamic. Also Kochi/Miwa for lost love, and Mai/Takada as more of a crack ship because there's no way she didn't get a crush on her when she went to the convention.

Okay one more, Kusakabe/Higuruma, because of the whole "I'll jump in front of Sukuna for you" thing that happened in a while ago. What was so compelling about Higuruma that would make Kusakabe, someone who's been known to do the bare minimum and put his own protection before others, so that for him?

Speed run on the women´s island

Kuja island

-Calm down! It's gonna be okay! The most important thing now is that you hold on tight! I can't guarantee your safety with this flying bubble, it will eventually have to stop and since you can't swim you need to be close to me in case we fall into the sea.

You felt that he was still in shock from the situation that happened, so you were stroking his black hair and saying that everyone was fine, that they would meet Rayleigh later.

K luck is not on your side, but do not be discouraged it could be worse, you could fall in the middle of this ocean with no island or ship close by. Being at the mercy of the ocean and becoming a snack for sea creatures (￣∇￣)

As soon as you stepped out of the bubble, which actually burst like a meteor on the ground, Luffy woke up and went ahead of you in search of food. 3 days without food 15 missed meals.

Looking for food is important, it would be okay for him to go hunting or collect something if he were not a complete hungry idiot who would eat a poisonous plant without thinking twice or get lost in the middle of unknown territory. And that is exactly what happened.

Now you find yourself lost in the forest trying to locate the smell or the presence of the rubber.

Luffy ended up eating a poisonous mushroom that caused several other mushrooms to sprout on his body. He was rescued by the natives of the island who took him to the center of the island, in the removal of mushrooms from his body, he had one that would not come out at all, seeing the difficulty of removing that blessed mushroom Nyon ba, old and ancient queen of the islands kuja approached and realized at the time that it was a man.

Luffy ended up being arrested.

In the meantime you found a wild boar and appropriated your flesh and head. The smell of food unfortunately did not attract the captain, so you started looking for the child again.

As soon as Luffy woke up he realized he was in a different place and without his straw hat. The women of the island were fascinated with such a creature, having never seen a man before, some were taking notes on the behavior of the new species. Well Luffy was still being chased if he missed the role that Rayleigh had given him. As anyone would, he kidnaps one of his pursuers. Yare Yare

Lucky that she had kept the paper with her, Luffy discovered that this was an island only of women and pirates. He also found out that they don't have a boat for you to come home to.

Depression

He built a boat while you were trying to find the lily of the valley again(. He built the raft. It is depressing to look. He drowned when it broke, lucky that he had Margareth to save him.

- What should we do now? If we stay here they will end up meeting us again. - complained Luffy

You found your captain again. Unfortunately the kujas too. What took a retreat for both of them, trying to escape the wrath of the inhabitants, you climbed the mountain.

-Hi Y / n! -What is? - The only way to get out of here is with a pirate ship. - Pirate ship? -Yea. Apparently there is only one ship that is the boss here. We have to find this person, to lend us the ship. - hummm ... I feel like I've heard something like this before ... understood! LET'S FIND THAT PERSON. -YOSHII! That means we have to talk to an important person ... important people live in large buildings, so ... -Luffy put his finger on his head while thinking, turning red - "ahh, I'm going to get a fever if I continue to think" - 😅😅😅 Let's look for that person in some big building, I'm sure that through trial and error we will find each other. - okay. Let's try that one over there!

You didn't even have time to blink when Luffy lifted you up and put you under his arm and jumped from the wall to the building below. When he landed on the roof, the tiles broke under the weight of the two. Both fell into a pool. Luffy began to struggle like a fish out of water.

-AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

- IDIOTAAA !!! - You pulled him by the collar of his shirt hanging him - It's just a bathroom! Calm down!

-Ah! It is true I can stand.

Despite the smoke you could see the silhouette of a naked woman, with her back to you. Even with the black hair covering most of your back, you could still see the mark. The paw of a Celestial dragon. The woman looked over her shoulder and her eyes widened at the figure of the intruders in her bathroom.

Two giant women stormed the bathroom, holding guns close to their bodies. They looked forward to you.

- What is a man doing in this realm? She questioned the redhead by putting a robe on her sister's body. - What exactly happened here?

- He and the woman saw my back - With this testimony the other two gasped

- What you saw behind my back ... is something we don't want to reveal even if we die. - Struck back the brunette

-Because what?! Who are you?!

- oh oh ... this is a problem.

- Take everything you saw to the grave !! MERO MERO MERO !! - She shouted putting her hands in a heart shape, making pink rays come out of them.

- Eh !! NORO NORO !? THAT NORO NORO RAY ?! - Luffy freaked out and pushed you out of reach of the radius - Damn I'm going to be slow

Luffy protected himself by bringing his arms in front of him, closing his eyes and waiting for her body to slow down. You got up out of the bath with a rancid face and a bump on your head. When the lightning struck you, you didn't feel any difference, while your captain grunted in disbelief, blinking.

His lips formed a straight line, putting the straw hat back on his head. The woman tried again to throw the lightning at you, and again it had no effect. You tilted your head to the side with question marks appearing.

-Why didn't you see rocks ?! - I asked indignantly to Moren. - Didn't you feel anything, no temptation in your hearts even when you saw me naked ?!

- I already said it was an accident!

- This is ridiculous, sister! The beauty of his naked body is at a level that would not fail to capture anyone no matter what gender or age. - said the redhead

- It's just a naked body. -The brunette let out a noise of surprise, grabbing her chest as if you had given her an arrow.

They both ran towards the window and jumped through it. As you fell, you heard a gunshot and Luffy shouted for you to be careful. He protected her from the shot and left a noise of pain when the bullet fell from her skin.

- I couldn't bounce it. It Wasn't a bullet?

- Maybe it's an akuma no mi. - You spoke while landing on the floor

-THAT MAN AND THAT WOMAN ARE THE INTRUDERS !! CAPTURE THEM PIRATES KUJA !! - Shouted the brunette at the top of the tower

A second later you were surrounded by the warrior kujas who seemed tougher than any of the village girls so far. They pointed the snake bows at you:

"It will be better for all of us if you come obedient" - said one of the women

- "Ran Nao has no man or woman outside who can defeat the pirate kujas" - Another started to laugh "Besides that they seem weak"

- So you are the all-female pirate crew. Do you know someone important ?!

- What do you plan to do if we tell you?

-If she is an important person, she must have a ship, right? I can ask her if she would take me on the ship, then I could sail again!

-This is ridiculous!! Do you really think that a man who invades Amazon lily, a forbidden place for men, can get out alive?

Luffy dodged by jumping out of the way, giving him a ride on his back as he stretched and turned into a Tarzan species, swaying on the rooftops.
