1980s Oi! Punk Playlist

And 1980s Punk Rock Playlist December is going out with a bang, with this small batch of kick-ass oi! tunes from the early part of the decade. In a broad sense, oi! is to punk what punk is to rock. Punk arose out of a desire and necessity for rock to have raw, energetic simplicity again, like it had at its founding, and when oi! came around in the UK in the late 70s, it was for much the same reasons: punk rock was losing its meaning and its edge as it was being practiced by artsy intellectual types and it was in need of a reduction back to its roots.

Oi! was working class music that dealt with working class concerns, like labor exploitation, lack of employment, run-ins with police, Thatcherism, the constant specter of nuclear annihilation, brawling, etc., and another thing that all the songs had in common was their use of anthemically chanted gang vocals, in which every member of the band would yell along to the chorus of a song in unison, which would also involve crowd participation in a live setting too. That aspect of it helped carry on long-held traditions of drinking songs and football chants in a new and different way; solidarism and empowerment achieved through unified rebelliousness 🤘.

So what we've got here are 13 classic oi! songs to get rough, rambunctious, rowdy, and raucous to—stuff that I don't think will ever end up going out of style because of how pure and true-to-form its brand of punk rock is. There's been a lot of oi! that's come out since—even some really gross white nationalist and Nazi shit that ignorant folks think is more or less representative of oi! as a whole—and a lot of it feels like it's going through the motions, because at the end of the day, there's really only so much that one can do with oi! in the first place. But this early generation of the stuff will feel forever fresh, and as long as working class issues remain issues, which seems very likely to be the case, the topics will continue to remain broadly relevant too.

One of the great leaders of this scene was a band called Blitz, and here I've included their blistering "Never Surrender," a perfect 90-second soundtrack to an enormous hypothetical street fight between rival gangs that's outfitted with brass knuckles, trashcan fires, broken glass bottles, knives, and spiked bats. As one of Blitz's most popular songs, which is currently sitting at 758K+ plays on Spotify, "Never Surrender" is one of those primal pieces of pure jump-around-and-break-every-single-thing-in-your-immediate-vicinity fury 😤.

And then for another leading light in this scene, we've also got The Exploited, who supply "Dead Cities," which has over 1.2 million plays, but also the much less popular "Rival Leaders" too, which only has 41.6K plays. "Rival Leaders" is one of those songs that invokes that aforementioned threat of nuclear Armageddon, but does it in a way that makes it feel exhilarating, sort of like how Detroit techno can also make the vision of a futuristic urban dystopic wasteland feel somehow inviting too. There's just a certain sense of, 'well, we're all stuck in this muck together, so we may as well just fuckin' party, right?' to it all. "Rival Leaders" is an explosion of pent-up speed and has one of the best gang choruses on this playlist, which is a simple rapid countdown from ten-to-one, before a final shout of "HERE WE GO!" which first signifies the launching of the nuke and then its detonation. Cathartic and invigorating.

Every song that's on this Spotify playlist is on the YouTube and YouTube Music versions of it too. 13 songs that run at just under half-an-hour, which is pretty close to the perfect length for a punk rock album anyway 😁.

And that's it for this five-Sunday 80s punk rock December! This month we got into punk rock in general, and then dove further into the oft-overlapping scenes of hardcore punk, street punk, UK82, and oi! punk, where we sussed out a bunch of the similarities and differences between them all.

And to start next year we'll be zagging into a couple weeks of soul music!

What punk rock band do you think would be a good fit for Warhammer?

Lovely question! I'm gonna assume you mean 40k since I have never posted anything about Fantasy. Also idk if punk rock would even fit there lol.

I have actually thought about this a lot since my Psyker Harald''s style is based on punk rock. And while I tap into many music genres, I rarely attach myself to a band or artist. I can easily pick out songs for this question but bands? So I did a bit of research for this one. I'll try my best but bear in mind, this is based on very limited knowledge of an amateur :'D

If there's someone out there who's into Warhammer 40k and punk rock, feel free to tell me some of your picks in an ask cause I always love to broaden my musical horizon~

Since 40k is futuristic, industrial and gothic in setting, I thought that would take inspiration on the music, tho the classic punk rock and variations of such would also work. I imagine depending on where you are in the universe there's very diffrent sub genres. Overall punk rock was always anti-establishment and 40k is built as an insane establishment so the critics and the ones edging heresy would surely flock to the punk rock genre.

Ideally I would imagine classic punk rock with touches of grunge, industrial, techno and maybe even the gothic holy music touch tho perhaps people would rather want to turn away from the holy chants for the Emperor. Or parody it. Who knows.

Unfortunately I haven't found exactly THAT but instead of one, here's 5 bands that to my limited knoweledge come close to some of the vibes I mentioned:

The Varukers - Started punk rock, went into thrash metal later, the themes they sing about are mostly anti-government and anti-war which like, yea.

WWW - It's more synth punk and weird but I think it fits perfectly to the more tech influence punk rock could have in 40k (like imagine the singers all with masks or rebreathers).

SPECTRES - More goth or post punk but especially Hindsight fits the vibes very well.

The Expelled - I don't necessairly have a good reason why they fit but vibes, man.

The Green Demons - Punk rock with many subgenres here and there, most of their songs have this haunting background vibe to it like you would play punk rock in a cathedral with a bit of punk unusal instruments aand some tech too.

* * * i hate hot topic because it makes it seem like punk is a glamourous thing, more like a fashion and thus a joke than something that the true punks are passionate about. they take bands like blink 182 and mxpx, at the drive in and good charlotte, and call them punk, when they're nothing more than boi bands with guitars. in my view, it's making a mockery of the entire scene, making glittery sid vicious shirts when he couldn't even play bass, and using the word "punk" as an excuse to mass market a lifestyle and make a fashion statement. the issue on prefabricated bondage pants is the same - it's something that i've done for years, something i've spent countless hours working on. i was proud of my results, and then a bunch of teenyboppers pay $70 and buy pretty much the same thing that i had put so much effort into, not really knowing or caring why, just using it as an excuse to be trendy. personally, i know for a fact that if i was a prep or this proverbial 'trendy' that everyone finds so fascinating, i would hate punk, and even hate 'punk rAWk'. think about it - what do these people *really* know about punk? they haven't been to the shows, they haven't felt the closeness and the unity of a crowd for the varukers or beat the shit out of each other in the name of the vandals - that might tear their $50 shirt or $550 pants - or god forbid, scuff their $4500 combat boots. why? because true punk is dirty and disgusting... but what would that sell? hot topic and their allies have to glamourize it, find something in it marketable - preps like SHINY STUFF ... safety pins and studs are SHINY ... WE HAVE FOUND OUR HOT NEW PRODUCT!... NEW and IMPROVED culture! * * *

* * * i think that's what gets to me the most - if the preps want to convert to punk rockers, i have no problem, (the more the merrier, rite?) but they're only doing it because it's the new "in" thing and don't really know much about the culture in general. half the "punks" i see are clad in glittery vicious shirts, purple plaid dogpile bondage pants with sparkley studded bracelets and belts, and yelling "PUNK ROCK" when the only bands they know are emo. emo isn't really that punk, it's like a punk version of country - "my girlfriend left me and now i'm going to sing this song so the world will know who woeful i feel." granted, i do like a BIT of emo, but if i didnt listen to oxy and gbh and the fits and unseen and such, i wouldn't wanna run around telling people i'm punk rock just because i like the ataris. i beat the fuck out of ppl like that. i think hot topic kind of spawned the whole trend simply because it is a trendy store, preps go in there, see something that's trendy, and buy it. it's meaningless to them, just a fashion statement, and hot topic has pretty much made it as such, as they enlist the help of MTV and M2 to spread the word that this is the next big thing. come on people, step up and say OI - don't buy your identity at the mall! * * *

1980s Street Punk Playlist

Alright, so, a couple weeks ago I posted an update to my general 1980s Punk playlist, then last week I posted an update to my 1980s Hardcore Punk playlist, and now, for this week, we're distilling things further down another level with a brand new 1980s Street Punk playlist. Think of all this as, like, that classification system that you once learned about in one of your biology or life sciences classes...

Street punk is a specific style of hardcore punk that sprung up in the UK in the late 1970s among the urban working-class male youth in direct response to the artistic pretensions that some punks had thought that their favorite genre itself had been developing at the time. The street punk ethos is, essentially, that punk rock is for the common people, and anyone should be able to make it; it has a near-strict level of equality between performer and fan (everyone at a punk rock show is a punk, be they creator or consumer), and therefore, the idea of needing to have 'musicianship' in order to play music is pure, exclusionary bollocks. Just make some radical fuckin' noise with some chords, a drumbeat, and a bassline, and yell your angst-ridden diatribe with the same intensity of one of those lunatic blokes down at a public town hall meeting or something, and you might have a real rockin' tune on your hands 🤘.

And so, what some of this rawest-of-raw and back-to-basics type of punk rock ended up giving us in the early 80s turned out to be some of the most timeless and catchy shit that the genre itself had ever managed to produce. By stripping the music of any perceived overgrowth of fuss, we got some sweet and hooky anthems out of it, with simple, but infectiously energetic riffs too.

Case in point, the song that's currently rolling around in my head right now as I type this, the militant "Never Surrender" by New Mills-based oi! band Blitz, which they released in 1982. As one of their most popular songs—758K+ Spotify plays—this tune is just 90+ seconds of pure and primal jump-around-and-break-every-single-thing-in-your-immediate-vicinity fury; the soundtrack to an enormous and chaotic, no-holds-barred street brawl that's outfitted with rusty chains, brass knuckles, broken glass bottles, trashcan fires, knives, and spiked bats 😤.

And its bouncy main riff sounds like something that a band like Rancid could've successfully replicated a decade or so later too.

Charged GBH, commonly known as GBH, are an English street punk band which was formed in 1978 by vocalist Colin Abrahall, guitarist Colin "Jock" Blyth, bassist Sean McCarthy (replaced by Ross Lomas after two shows[1]) and Drummer Andy "Wilf" Williams. GBH were early pioneers of English street punk, often nicknamed "UK82", along with Discharge, Broken Bones, The Exploited and The Varukers. GBH have gone on to influence several punk rock musicians.

The name GBH was inspired by then-bassist Sean McCarthy's trial for grievous bodily harm. Though the core line up of Colin, Ross and Jock has stayed the same throughout their history the drum stool has been occupied by a number of incumbents following Wilf's departure after the Midnight Madness and Beyond album and Oh No It's GBH again 12" ep. 1986 saw the arrival of German drummer Kai Reder who played on three albums and an EP (No Need To Panic, A Fridge Too Far and From Here To Reality, as well as the "Wot A Bargain" 12"), Kai was then replaced by American, Joe "Fish" Montanero for one album (Church of The Truly Warped), this was the band's last release for the Rough Justice label. The drum stool was then occupied from around 1994 by former Bomb Disneyland/Bomb Everything drummer Scott Preece, who has remained to this day and played on all releases since.

Life / Zudas Krust split 7″EP by phobiarecords

  Warwound have released a lyric video for a brand new song from their forthcoming LP, ‘Burning The Blindfolds Of Bigots’ due out on Unrest Records in June. This will be their fist full length LP having previously done releases with the above mention War/Plague and a demo way back in 1983 but with a new line up of Damian Thompson now on guitar and Rat Varuker on vocal, Ian Glasper on bass and Steve Wingrove on drums this impressive line up makes this fothcoming album very interesting.
