it's so funny to me that caleb and veth really did just trade off the job of intensely pining for the other at like the halfway point of the campaign. like, imo, nott in the early days did not behave in any real romantic or even romance-adjacent ways toward him--I imagine it would be very hard to even think in that way when you hate what you look like so much, have such low self-esteem, and are actively lying about your entire past, including a secret husband. caleb, on the other hand, is kind of diving directly back into the sort of relationship he had with astrid and eadwulf. very close, very intimate, we-huddled-for-warmth-together-and-oops-it-led-to-something-else sort of thing. he is the one who expresses that he's fine with it if people think he and nott are romantically together when they're talking to keg. nott is the one who pushes back on that. he calls her his life partner. unknowingly, he compares his feelings for nott to nott's feelings for yeza. his behavior only really starts to change after he finds out about veth's husband because suddenly all of that other stuff is rendered inappropriate in retrospect. but even then he compliments her to yeza over dinner in the most awkward of ways, he admits to being jealous, he calls yeza "a lucky man" to have her, he stares at veth and yeza closed bedroom door for far too long, he creates an entire arcane tower with room for her family just so she'll stay with him. in general, his behavior is not, um, totally and completely platonic about it, you know?
like, veth's feelings for caleb are canonical and therefore indisputable in their existence, but caleb in the early days was not that dissimilar to how veth was acting near the end of the campaign. it really paints a picture of "right person, wrong time" in the way things just didn't line up for them. or, as veth would say: "in another world, maybe"
#i am actually thinking about this because my widobrave 2 poll had so many moments on it that caleb initiated#and i often see it remarked that people think widobrave is entirely one-sided and caleb only treats her as platonic or familial#which. my real answer is that it's just complicated and i don't think he'd ever admit to any romantic feelings being there#but i also. uh. i wouldn't call it platonic or familial. there is some holy fourth dimension that this relationship exists in istg#impossible to explain but it is NOT entirely platonic nor all that familial imo as it stands in canon#this is like. ONE piece of the meta I was trying to figure out how to phrase earlier today. bottom line of it was:#I don't think the caleb/veth romance is entirely one-sided but also it is so so complicated#their relationship changes SO many times. SO much. that's why it's so frustrating that fandom is stuck in episode 13 re: their dynamic#SO MUCH ABOUT THE DYNAMIC CHANGES AFTER EPISODE 13#even sam reigel himself on talks said there was no reason their relationship wouldn't change/evolve after that#and it did change! it really really did!#widobrave#the mighty nein#caleb widogast#veth brenatto#critical role#inaugurating the new url with a widobrave post. as it should be

body-type studies of Nott/Veth. been having fun drawing nott again because of re-listening to earlier cr2 eps (like around ep30) and veths just always fun to draw anyway.
[ID: digital drawing of Nott/Veth from Critical Role on a white background with a faint beige spiral behind her, both versions are wearing simple off-white underwear. on the left is Nott, thin with green skin and messy hair and bright yellow eyes. She's stretching her arms above her head with a grumpy expression. on the right is Veth, smiling and standing more confidently. She has warm medium brown skin, dark brown hair in two braids with a thin headband. they both have thin tails and turquoise tattooed patterns around their eyes. between their heads is a yellow button. end ID.]

It's looking like there's a growing divide between Campaign watchers and Tlovm watchers in terms of like. We're here for the characters. 12-episode seasons aren't. They can't be. I'm already making peace with everything we'll lose in the Mighty Nein show, and I know I will enjoy it for what it is but I also know that almost nothing that made the story so special will translate to the screen, because turning it into a show automatically means (in this day and age) that plot must be the number one priority. They've already come out and told us it's going to be different, the characters we know and love but new stories.
Because that's how this has to work. And I feel bad for campaign one lovers, because while it is certainly the easier of the two to translate to a big, overarching story, even though it's a more "traditional" high fantasy story with easier archetypal characters, the archetypes and the plot aren't what cemented most people's love for the campaign. So much of the love for critical role is stored in the interpersonal dynamics and the payoff that comes from hundreds of hours of tiny interactions that one day become cornerstones of development and even affect or dictate the plot.
There's no room for that. There's no room for Bard's Lament in a story that cannot afford to remove and replace a main character. A lot of tlovm is for people who have been here for all of campaign one. Most of it, however, isn't. It's for a new crowd. While CR may have creative control, you can bet your ass that there were months and years devoted to figuring out how to map a character-focused love of the show into a plot that hits the right beats to be viable in the show market.
And it worked. Tlovm has consistently high viewing numbers, and its popularity has brought and will continue to bring new people into the universe who have never interacted with CR previously. That's not a bad thing - imagine finishing your favorite show and discovering it has another FIVE HUNDRED HOURS of the equivalent of behind the scenes content. That's incredible for these newcomers. But man, it is in many ways a loss for us.
#Tlovm spoilers#In some ways it's like looking into a dark mirror#And this is again with a story that's relatively easy to plot with clear arcs and themes#The mighty Nein was a sandbox that was entirely character driven in terms of where they went and what they did#It has a few loose arcs but even the fact that molly died so early#The fact that he haunts the remainder of the show#That's going to be lost. Its impact on Yasha and on beau who spends the rest of the campaign looking for a chance to do what he did#The fact that his death tied narratively into Caleb getting the spell for their hut - their home - and nearly crying#Knowing he had a way to keep them safe after they lost one#None of that is plottable#I'm losing my thread of thought and I have to work but. I don't even know if sad is the right word#Because CR has gotten so far. So much further than anything of its kind.#There is much joy here and I will adore seeing the Nein#But it's okay to acknowledge that capitalism strips away the ability to focus on the heart of critical role#And that's why the live play media is so special#That's literally what makes it special and what makes the story so impactful#Critical role

I'm thinking about the absurdity of everything that happened to the Mighty Nein when they finally make it to Rosohna.
Like, imagine being the Essek for that.
Here's a group of adventurers. They have a surprising number of humans in their midst. That's a little suspicious considering the war with the Empire. After a few questions, they appear to be the world's most obvious and transparent spies. Like... Come on, they don't even really seem to know the region.
Well, whatever, guess they're gonna be treated appropriately-
Oh, that's a beacon. In a moment of stress, they proceed to pull out the most valuable relic of your people, which was stolen, or lost, and just... hand it back over to you.
You (as Essek), know about 95% of how they got their hands on it, because you've been keeping tabs on it because you're the one who handed it over in the first place. And here it is. In the throne room. They have no idea what it is, but they know the Bright Queen wants it, and they seem to earnestly want to make friends, and really would just like one of their members to get her husband back.
And the whole thing gets even stupider because you (that is to say Essek), decide that your best chance of keeping everything secure is to be the one who keeps an eye on them, and these dumbasses categorically refuse to stop trying to befriend you. You are specifically, actively trying to stop them from getting you caught and executed for treason, and they're like 'hey, you want to come over for dinner or something? We have a hot tub.'
#Critical Role#mighty nein#Essek#Apparently the original intent was for Essek to be an antagonist#Which is completely borne out by his design and demeanor in retrospect#Which probably means there was a moment where Matt went 'Fuck... He *would* like to come over for dinner'#At which point it was over for him because the Mighty Nein as a group are very charming#I also can't help thinking they managed to speedrun the end of the war faster than Matt had expected to be possible#Because they managed to be Friends of the Dynasty in 30 minutes flat with that beacon stunt#And their first interaction with Rexxentrum was stopping a doomsday cult#While also making it extremely obvious that they somehow had a non-zero amount of sway with the Dynasty#And with the Cerberus Assembly getting a spare beacon (so they can give back the first one)#It's like 'yeah the war is no longer unstoppable at the exact moment you're here to stop it'#Still not over Jester sending to the guy like 'They're willing to talk. Maintain the ceasefire. MAINTAIN. THE. CEASEFIRE.#Like the opposite of one of those Greek miscommunication tragedies

FAQ
Someone pointed out to me that asks were turned off, oops... that has been fixed now. Feel free to ask me anything! If I don't respond right away, forgive me, I have a day job and must pay bills, but I'll at least check in once a week when I'm rewatching the episodes myself.
Just to answer a few questions I've gotten so far:
There is no need or obligation to tag spoilers. (With the sheer number of people here who will be repeat watchers, it will be impossible to avoid spoilers, and I don't want anyone policing anyone on what tags they use - I want everyone to have fun!)
If you WISH to tag spoilers as a courtesy to new watchers, I would suggest using #nein again spoilers just so we all know it's specifically spoilers for the rewatch. (And if you are a first time watcher, WELCOME! I hope you enjoy the ride! Please tell us your thoughts as we go!)
PLEASE keep negativity to a minimum, meaning if you dislike a particular ship or canon event or whatever, I would only ask that you keep it out of the #nein again tag? That tag is for sharing LOVE of this campaign, so similarly I would ask not to see too many comparisons to other campaigns. (I have no intent to actually police any of this or call anyone out, and this is also NOT a request for ANYONE ELSE to police it either. I can and will use the block button.)
I am currently queuing up posts with the episode links, which will go out one episode at a time every Sunday at 8:00 am Mountain Time for the US (which I believe is 10:00 am Eastern Time for the US, and that's as far as my knowledge of time zones go) This is not a "live watch" per se. Think of it more like a book club. We all have a whole week to watch the episode and chat about it. Set your own schedule, and of course PLEASE don't feel bad if you fall behind! If you have a bad week, it's COMPLETELY okay to just skip the episode for that week and catch the next one. Or take a break for a few months! Or if you get REALLY into it, you can watch ahead at your leisure. No one is grading you on how well you manage to keep up.
On a very cool note, I checked the follower count AND WE ARE SOMEHOW ALREADY AT OVER 200 FOLLOWERS??? MY GOD, THAT IS INCREDIBLE! Very happy to join you all on this journey!
Special thanks to @sethdomade for mentioning the idea of a "dracula daily" version of a Mighty Nein rewatch! (That I'm now realizing I basically hijacked the idea and didn't even ask them at all if that was okay, I AM SO SORRY, I guess I'm asking forgiveness instead of permission??)
Drop any other questions in the ask box, and I WILL SEE YOU ALL TOMORROW FOR EPISODE ONE!
#nein again#critical role#the mighty nein#i am so ridiculously excited to start my own rewatch#anytime i try to rewatch i always end up doing a binge and then losing steam#i think it will be easier to go at a nice steady pace of one episode per week#and gives me something to look forward to#ive got about 95 of the episodes queued and ill keep working at it until i reach the end#and THEN ive got to set up the post campaign things like the ukotoa fight and solstice fight and the crossover vox machinan fight#and i havent even SEEN them fight the weave mind yet! i havent had a chance to watch that!

veth: caleb, you taught me feather fall! we can all hold hands and you and me cast feather fall on everybody–
caleb: i don't have that prepared today–
veth: yeah you do! we'll be fine!
jester: i'm not brilliant with mathematics or physics and stuff but i feel like we're not gonna make it through the waterfall and the geyser is just going to shoot us up into the ceiling
fjord and beau: OR....we could get thrown out of the cave and into the sky :)
caleb: i am pretty good with math and the idea that you think you can predict the direction that you will be thrown into the sky by jumping into a geyser is Ludicrous.
yasha: but the thing is if we all hold hands, and we can have a contest like whoever lets go loses
caleb: oh well she convinced me. i change my mind.

A Very Cursed Thought;
So, Essek has his wrist pocket spell, yes? I have read a few fics where it could be dispelled, but most usually in the Fanon I've seen it has been ruled that it drops when he is killed.
Please please imagine that Essek gets got (and no worries, he has 2 (two) Clerics and a whole rest of the Nein invested in his eventual survival, he'll be fine), but yeah he Gets Got and, as the stuff spills out of his dimensional wrist pocket, please imagine the sound Sonic the Hedgehog Makes when he gets got and the golden rings pop out.
That is all XD
#Essek Thelyss#Fanon Musings#The Mighty Nein#critical role#This popped into my head#and I needed to inflict it on others#simple as that XD#Perhaps I am long-term coping with fics where Essek dies for a while?? and usually Caleb or the others come across his stuff and the only#reason it would be out on the floor like this is if his wrist pocket was dispelled and the only reason that would happen#would be that he was killed#Fics have the power to destroy a peep and alter their psyche forever tbh XD#Anyway yeah RIP this fanon version of Essek#He better pray to the gods he doesn't believe in that no one he knows long-term heard that noise#he'll never LIVE it down#Heh XD#Maybe it's a Luxon thing#Thank you for readinf this far in the tags XD#Lol#Please know that as I explained this to my roommate#And had to explain the concept of the wrist pocket#The first mental image they had was that the stuff would come out and hover over the ground like Minecraft Drops#It's Beautiful XD

honestly i didn't want to get invested in beau & molly's friendship because i knew the spoiler but i did it anyway unintentionally and oh boy these 26 episodes of their shenanigans were completely worth it but also since molly's death I haven't taken a L once as their enjoyer. like molly really died in front of beau and made her speedrun through an existential crisis and also taliesin said molly would think that he'd always have a one-up on her. she got his tattoo and then got impaled the next day just like he did (yay! just besties things) and then also got a cursed fucked up eye right in the middle of it just like the one he had. she liked to think there was a town somewhere where people still believed he was a king. it's less related but seeing her and lucien annoy the shit out of each other was also endearing. when kingsley woke up the first thing she did was giving him a middle finger like she wasn't one of the people directly participating in his resurrection because she wanted to. it's like a schrodinger's friendship. molly was six feet under for the most of the show so they haven't actually interacted all this time but somehow put-on pettiness was stronger than death indeed
#their fighting siblings vibes were so special i love them your honor#molly died because he and beau would be too powerful. and by powerful i mean they'd be too chaotic to make it to the end#would go out in a blaze of glory no doubt tho#love them for it. truly disastrious people <3#anyway i wish they had a besties name. like brjeaus or circus kids you get the idea#i haven't seen one but if it exists please let me know i need to know!!#beauregard lionett#mollymauk tealeaf#the mighty nein#critical role

I think I kinda figured out why many people are not enjoying Critical role campaign 3 very much and that's the exact same reason why I actually love it and I am struggling with campaign 2
#i am not sure i want to elaborate#i am into 42 episodes of campaign 2 and it 's not bad but everything seems so disconnected#i kinda struggle to follow everything because it sesms like it's a buch of personal quests one after the other#while I honestly like having a precise idea where the story it's supposed to go#yeah I know it's not as free adventure#but to me it works much better#and matt still gave the players various opportunities to decide how to proceed and how to develope their own storylines#also they are having fun and i love warching them having fun#i still love C1 above all else because it felt more spontaneous#but it still had its issues#also the story started to work with whitestone arc and then chroma conclave#aka when the main storyline dropped#critical role#bell's hells#c3#the mighty nein#vox machina#personal opinion
