i think we've done a great job expanding the view of what a child's favorite animal can be. kids these days can say they love axolotls or pangolins or coelecanths and their decision is respected. maybe their parents can even find them a stuffed animal of it if they know where to look. and i think that's beautiful

A few years ago, when Avengers: Endgame came out, I had a tutoring gig with elementary schoolers. And there was this one little girl who really, really wanted to spoil what happened in Avengers Endgame to me, but I hadn't made it out to see the movie yet, so, you know, I politely ask her not to, but she really wants to tell me what happened. So I tell her, tell you what, it's free time right now, so you draw me a picture of what it is you wanted to spoil for me so bad, and then after I see the movie I'll unfold it and look at it, is that a good compromise? And she's like, yeah, that'd work! So she draws a picture at and gives it to me. That weekend, I go see Endgame, and when I get back from the theatre, and true to my world I unfold the drawing, and it's a crayon, mommy-and-daddy-and-me-out-front-of-our-house-style depiction of Black Widow's lifeless corpse splayed out on the rocks of Vormir

His son, about four(?) asked to check out a board book. No, Dad says, no board books allowed! (Board books are a format, not a level. Also, let your kid read what he likes, asshole.)

Has refused to read two of the books that his daughter (about 7?) asked him to read to her. One of them was a kids' introductory book about the Vietnam War (so, maybe fair), but the other was Wacky Things Pets Do.

Did agree to read her a book called The Lion Queens of India about Indian women conservationists but only reluctantly and then read it very quickly in a bored monotone.

Dude, you are at the library with two kids who are excited about books but you keep killing their buzz and staring at your phone. I hate you so much rn.
