Bloodmoon Huntress spoilers under the read more!

The first thing Rayla does after Callum is acquainted with her meadow and the adoraburrs is hunt through the foliage under the silverbark tree to find the little yellow burr that kept her company all those years ago.

It's a long shot. He won't be yellow anymore, and that's if he's even there at all. Adoraburrs aren't known for their longevity, and this one had been with her for at least a couple of years before he found his spot under the silverbark tree to retire. She's had other adoraburr friends too, but this one... is special. This one saw her through her first month with Ethari and Runaan.

Her first month without her parents.

It'd been a time. She was angry at Mum and Dad and she made sure Ethari and Runaan knew it by being as difficult as possible. When all the other kids were getting ready to celebrate the Harvest Moon with their families, Rayla's had just left her, and yeah, Ethari and Runaan tried, those first few weeks, but it wasn't the same and they knew that as well as she did.

She hadn't gone to the Bonbon Fire in the end. Other things had happened. The whole thing with Suroh and his family and the Bloodmoon Huntress. The little yellow adoraburr had been with her through it all, and had stayed with her for months after too. They were hard, lonely days, but at least she'd had him, and she hopes, perhaps a little too optimistically, that he's still around.

The foliage shuffles. Rayla's heart lifts for a moment, but the she clears it away and finds a meadow mole instead.

"Oh," she mumbles, her shoulders drooping with disappointment.

"What's wrong?"

Rayla looks up and chuckles a little, in spite of herself. Callum is peering over her shoulder with a bunch of adoraburrs tucked into his scarf. "Nothing," she says. "I just... I had a friend a long while ago who I hoped might still be here."

Callum's brows knit together. "One of these guys?"

"Yeah." Rayla snorts, and it's both fond and aware of how ridiculous it sounds. "A little yellow one. I called him Arin. He was my best friend for a little while."

"Your best friend was an adoraburr?"

"I didn't have the easiest time getting along with the other kids." Rayla shrugs. "I don't really know what else I expected? Adoraburrs don't live that long and it's been years. I guess I just hoped my new best friend might get to meet him." She huffs as she gets up again and dusts her hands against her pants. "It's not a big deal. He was—"

She doesn't finish. Callum tugs her into his embrace before she can. She blinks. "What are you doing?"

Callum breathes into her shoulder, and she thinks she can feel a shudder in his breath. "You were a really lonely kid, huh?"

"Oh." Rayla presses her lips together. "I guess I was."

"You're my best friend too," he says. "And you don't ever have to be alone again."

Rayla pauses. Then she laughs and hugs him back. Yeah, she supposes. She was. But, in Ethari's words, sometimes the act of caring is being there when no one else is—and Callum is very definitely there. She smiles and tightens her arms around his waist. "Thanks Callum."

Callum: No, thank you. We don’t drink that.

Rayla: What?

Callum: Blood. We don’t drink blood. We don’t mean to be rude, but, uh, you can keep it.

Rayla: It’s moon berry juice.

Me: Oh wow, I wonder if she remembers that.

If you need help with ideas for a system-wide tag, I'd suggest (system name) answers/talks/chats/rambles/etc! For example: we use suroh rambles, and I believe the nachos system uses something along the lines of nachos talk or something like that? I hope this helps you! -Moon

Ah thank you!! It does help some. For now I know that with it just being me(Luka), Knight, and Comet, we'll be using '[name] rambles' ect? I am so very tempted to call it 'nervous system'(bc haha anxiety pun) but I know thstll be confusing. Other posibilities might be 'prince system' or 'kingdom system'

But I'm not terribly worried about it at this moment? Because not too much is likely to change with how our system interacts with here on tumblr. Comet seemingly has little interest in exploring and using the internet outside of finding soothing and calming content to watch when he fronts(from what I can tell) and is nonverbal and shies away from interacting with people, and Knight fronts most often to handle high pressure, high stress, depressive, and traumatic situations because he is the system's protector, I think is the word?(Hense why he calls himself Knight) And him messing with my tags in a post today was the first time hes ever touched tumblr, and it was to fuss as me for keeping us up so late, so..

While Knight and Comet are certainly part of the system, I think it's safe to say I, Luka, am still primarily going to be present and fronting for our social media? And it's sort of safe to assume that unless specified, or a specific one of us is adressed with a question, Lukas will still be the one answering, creating, drawing, writing, and posting everything here on tumblr, just like before.

But thank you, and everyone else, so much, for the support, the advice, the directions! It's been really relieving to reach out, and while theres still a ton of nerves because everything is still very new to talk openly about, I'm so thankful to be able to have the chance to be open about it.

Like most of my theories and ideas about canon, I put it in a fic. Namely In Search of Sleep.

Like @konmaao3 pointed out, season 1-3 Rayla was self-sacrificial to a fault (often leaping before she looked. Literally.)

Season 4 Rayla has changed though, with Soren literally lampshading it.

I hope we get some insight into what caused this change in attitude. A number of people pointed out that Suroh shares a lot of characteristics with Callum, mainly being connected to the Sky arcanum and having green eyes. Even this panel below looks familiar. (We were starved for content when Bloodmoon Huntress came out, okay?)

Suroh also strikes me as someone who might feel that have a personal debt to Rayla. He even knows she's upset about her parents leaving. (And the use of the iconic words "hero" in relation to Rayla herself? Hmm...)

So while Season 3 Rayla seemed determined to set out alone, having someone with a personal connection to her insisting on paying the price/repaying debts for saving his family? Well, let's just say I could see it.

He seemed like a very convenient proxy for Callum in my fic, serving to instigate Rayla’s change in perspective and personalising it more than perhaps someone else she randomly got to know in her two year absence.

People have been wondering why Rayla is not trying everything to save the dragon in the Drakewood. After all, she has very self-sacrificial tendencies in S1-3. However, I want to emphasize that she was not only prone to self-sacrifice, she also did not consider indirect consequences of her actions for others. Trying to save Pyrrah could have easily endangered Zym as well, but she did it anyway (she would have been a terrible chess player).

This behaviour has changed. Maybe she simply became more realistic while growing older, so now she is doing actual cost-benefit analysis like a sane person (just probably without considering her own life, like a Rayla person). And in this situation getting spotted would mean endangering Callum and their mission. Her self-sacrificial streak could thus still be there, but she might only act on it if she can safely assume that she doesn’t put someone else at risk in the process.

Or, if we want a dramatic flashback scene:

What if at some point during the two years she was in a situation where she wanted to keep person A safe, but was then distracted by person B being in danger as well – resulting either in person A dying or even, because she was half-assing both jobs, in both A and B dying?
