Shock flashes over his face, which then goes frighteningly blank. “I would not.”

Kerry swears a blue streak, but though he has a firm grip on her wrist he doesn’t try to pry it away. Fear or something else, she can’t tell. Her mind feels like an abandoned lot in the rain, muddy and shining with oil. Worn down by the water.

<C'mon V,> Johnny says, more bitter than taunting. <Piss or get off the pot.>

She grips Kerry’s collar tighter, but it’s too late. Her hands are starting to go numb from the pressure, all clumsy and wrong just like before. And he smells like Kerry, like Kerry has always smelled, and she has to resist the urge to bury her face into his shoulder for comfort. To sink her teeth in and hold on for dear life.

V lets him go, and when he springs away, tense and angry, she offers him the knife handle first. He has his lips pressed tightly together, so furious he’s trembling with it. But he only stalks out of the kitchen, taking all the air out with him. Her knees, suddenly weak, give out under her, and she slides down to the floor with her back against the cabinets.

<Happy now?> Johnny asks, but the only response she can make is a choked, frustrated sob.

“Valentine,” Goro says gently, taking the knife with one hand as he briskly wipes her tears with the other.

“It was the only way.”

V went very still, every muscle in her body clenched even as he could see her heart starting to race. She avoided eye contact, normally, but now she held him trapped. Only a few feet away, with the abyss opening up between them.

“Get out.” It was a command. One that she clearly expected him to obey without question.

“Valentine,” he said, stopping as she suddenly advanced, grabbing his wrist tightly in her chrome hand. Her expression was blank with anger, jaw clenched hard enough that she seemed in danger of cracking a tooth. Slowly, softly, she brushed her lips over the old scar on his cheekbone.

“Get out,” she repeated, voice cracking just a little. After another moment she released his wrist, but did not step away.

He considered staying, but he knew the shape of her anger and where it would lead. Cautiously, he brushed his hand against hers, and saw her shudder. Then he stepped back, but was unable to keep himself from hesitating. She smiled at him with all her teeth, giving him the unavoidable impression that she was about to leap forward and sink them into his chest. Her eyes were bright with unshed tears.

He did not make her give the order a third time. With a slight bow, he turned and left her office, hearing the lock click behind him.

I was rambling on the issue of museums and human remains and how certain populations are more likely to have their bodies put on display to be gawked at and then went "well I guess the Pompeii casts were of Europeans. there are bones in there right?" and Googled it to make sure, at which point I confirmed that yes there are bones in there, but more interestingly DNA testing revealed that a cast of an adult holding a child everyone assumed was a mother and child were, in fact, a man and a kid entirely unrelated to him. Honestly that's more moving to me. Maybe they were connected in a way other than blood, but maybe a stranger saw a child when the world was ending and thought the one thing he could do was hold them.
