STRANGE OCCURRENCES 8: RICHIE AND WHITE SQUALL
So Richie' has a poster of White Squall in his apartment
WHITE SQUALL is A true story about a group of American teenage boys who crew a school sailing ship to gain experience, discipline, or whatever their parents feel they lack.
In white squall 'Captain Christopher Sheldon takes a bunch of teenage boys on an ill-fated sailing voyage where they must use all the skills they have learnt so far to survive a white squall.'
That's what we see happening in the Bear. All these characters in someone's head obtaining skills to help the real person, survive. So a lot of season 2 was sending the characters to learn different skills so they can help.
CARMY already has a lot of skills but he's been also messed up, so in comes Sydney, who starts to encourage change and needs to do it fast. Whereas Carmy wants to take it slower.
Because he's messed up later is better for him. He keeps asking Syd to hold on. But time is short. SYDNEY HAS TO BE IMPATIENT. That is what they need
She eventually had to do it without Carmy
because they're up against the clock
If all of this is going on in someone's head and, they are trying to work through something (by dissociating ) to help someone/Their real self and every second counts, then this is a big deal.
The Squall confirms this theory.

America’s Got Talent: Season 15 - Online Auditions
Alright, let's talk about the online auditions...And I don't just mean the ones they actually showed in full on the show last week, I mean all of the ones that were available to watch before the season even began! You can find all the videos here (you can't miss them): https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCsNUxRA5hGXEAZI3Mk_D3JQ/videos
So let's get right to it, shall we...?
10: Erin McCarthy. I'm sure Terry got flashbacks to his Old Spice days (I know it was the other guy, but still...) I guess the horse was a pretty amusing touch, but this lady's so pitchy that I was getting a migraine! All that said, this was a HELL of a way to close out the auditions...
9: Chris & Syd. Well, the guy's a nice singer, and the dog...is good at howling...Otherwise, this is a silly gimmick, and won't likely make it past the Judge Cuts next week...That said, if they do, they're gonna be a real threat in this game, bringing in votes from both the Heartland and dog lovers...
8: Tommy Socks. It's funny how they showed this right after the dude juggling flaming axes and a chainsaw...and yet THIS is the most dangerous-looking act I've seen in these online auditions! Usually, a man his age shuffling around on a hard-tile floor in his socks is a LifeCall waiting to happen! And yet he not only remained on his socked feet, but proved to be very spry on them for his age! This act is a silly gimmick, and he won't make it past the next round, but he still has my respect!
7: Max Major. OH MY GOD! THE FINGER TRICK WORKED ON ME TOO! HOW DID HE DO THAT!? IT COULDN'T HAVE BEEN SIMPLE PHYSICS, HE MUST BE A WIZARD! ...Or a demon, like Simon said...But seriously, this was nothing amazing...I guess the fact that he was able to do this through video chat was impressive enough, although I did just read a comment about an “invisible deck”, which does make it less impressive...Still, I'm curious enough to see what he can do on a live stage...
6: Lauren O'Brien. Impressionists are always fun, even if the novelty of them tends to wear out pretty quickly from round to round...But I enjoyed her, and her impression of Sofia is all the more amusing now that I've gotten to know her more throughout the auditions. (Silly accent aside, she is growing on me as a judge...)
5: Darius. I guess he won't give his last name...(Rucker?) Very likable personality, good song choice, and a very nice singing voice! I wouldn't quite call him my favorite singer of the season, but this was a nice audition...It's actually kind of a shame that we won't likely see him again...At least this season...But if nothing else, maybe I'll actually get a little respect for my miserable time working retail (even though I quit that job months before COVID even broke out...)
4: Alexis & The Puppy Pals. Well, she's not quite at Alexa Lauenburger's level yet, but she's on her way! None of the tricks were anything I haven't seen before, but they were very impressive considering the age of the trainer...How interesting that some of the best dog trainers to come on this show are little girls! All that said...The 80s called, they want their wardrobe back!
3: Aaron...Bonk? (Sorry, I can't see his name spelled out anywhere, only hear Terry pronounce it.) Silly little diagonal mohawk aside, I'm always a sucker for rebellious-looking people juggling chainsaws and flaming weaponry! I'd love to see him do this act on a stage, but since they didn't even show him in last week's quick compilation of online acts, we're probably not even going to see him again...Again, at least until he tries auditioning again for one of the coming years...
2: The Hurd Family. Clearly, the dad and the eldest son are the real talent, while the two younger siblings are just there to cute it up a bit...Some very strong dancing, but sadly they probably won't make it past Judge Cuts since they were given the montage treatment in the official episode...
1: Simon's pajamas. A brilliant spectacle! BRRRRAVO!
This was a fun little collection of talent, and the home-recorded nature of everything kinda added to the charm...The judges were also more entertaining while just casually kicking back at their houses...Like with “Saturday Night Live”, I hope it doesn't have to continue like this, but for now, it was different and enjoyable...(Unfortunately, the Judge Cuts will be more of the same, so I really do wonder how they're gonna handle the remainder of this season...)
Probably the only acts from this who will pass the Judge Cuts next week are Alexis and MAYBE Max (if he can pull off a good enough trick). Everyone else were either silly gimmicks who don't even have the quality of so-bad-it's-good, or weren't shown in full for the official episode last week...
But we'll just see...For now, let's move on to tonight's “Best Of” show...Here are the auditions they compiled for this episode...
1: W.A.F.F.L.E. Crew
2: Double Dragon
3: Brandon Leake
4: Brett Loudermilk
5: Cristina Rae
6: The Spyros Bros
7: Voices of Our City Choir
8: Alan Silva
9: Roberta Battaglia
10: Vincent Marcus
11: Archie Williams
The reason why I listed these acts is because all of them are most likely in the live shows already (not counting the Golden Buzzer acts that we KNOW are already there). The “Best Of” shows tend to be made up of acts that the judges and/or producers liked the most, and by the time they air, the live performers have already been selected weeks or even months ago...So you know they must have liked them enough if they're in this compilation...
Can't say I'm surprised by any of these choices...except maybe Double Dragon; They were a little under my radar...I mean, if it were up to me, this compilation would have included Malik DOPE, Noah Epps, Nolan Neal, Winston, Brothers Gage, Wesley Williams and Sheldon Riley...But Waffle and Spyros are probably my two favorite auditions this season overall, so whatever...
I guess these were pretty good auditions overall...A few boring episodes here and there, but there was still a handful of memorable acts...I'd LIKE to think they'll all make it next week, but we'll just wait and see...The format's going to make things VERY difficult, and we might not even see some of them compete again...
Even the Golden Buzzer choices had some decent variety for once! Only two of them were solo singers (one child, and one adult), and for the other spots we have a choir, a poet and a dance group...Waffle's still the only act that really excites me, but it's refreshing when it's not just four singers and a dance act...Plus, from a cynical business standpoint, the choices all make perfect sense...
As for which of them will win this season...Well, it's a VERY tough call...I'm still rooting for Waffle, and they DO have the right aspects to help them out...But so far, they're not quite raking in the same enthusiasm that other winners have...
Roberta has the most views BY FAR on Youtube...But does she really have the uniqueness or overwhelming hype that previous winners had? While I like her overall, I REALLY don't want her to win this season, because NOTHING about her is distinguishable compared to all previous winners...MAYBE the quality of her singing voice compared to other child singers, but even that is a tough comparison...
Otherwise, we've had child singers with much more unique gimmicks win in the past, she's not writing her own songs (yet), she doesn't have a unique genre...Hell, even in terms of which judge's Golden Buzzer she is, it's hard to root for her; It's only Sofia's first season, and she's basically filling in for Gab Union (whose GB won last season), who in turn filled in for Mel B (whose GB won two seasons before that). Come to think of it, aside from Howie's GB the season before THAT, the only judge who has SEEN their GB win each year was the female minority judge (seeing that NONE of the GB's won in Season 13...though it was probably MEANT to be Howie's again...)
Point being, if there's any season where Simon's GB is to win, it should be the one where he selects an act that has potential to be one of my favorites...I guess it wouldn't hurt to give Heidi a year either...Or hell, more seasons where the winner ISN'T a Golden Buzzer...(You never know...It could be Archie...)
Anyway, that's all I got for now...See you next week when we find out which lucky acts get to perform live...Or...well...as live as they can make it...(God, PLEASE don't make this our “new normal”!)

New Blood
As David Burke, writer of this episode puts it, "'New Blood' was a yardstick for me and my future involvement and creative influence with the show. For that reason, it was very, very important and it also introduced a whole bunch of characters that played out for the rest of the arc. It was Steelgrave's confrontation with Patrice, Mahoney's first appearance, as well as Harry the Hunch and Syd Royce. All of these people were important to introduce, because they helped define Atlantic City as a territory. What that episode also did was define a battlefield for the mob; a battleground that Steelgrave found himself in the center of after the death of his brother. That was real important and an opportunity for Stephen Kronish, myself, and the rest of the writing staff to focus on real concrete confrontation problems that Vinnie found himself caught up in." "What I'm thinking about in particular is almost all the first act, and certainly from the moment they go to the bowling alley and meet with Patrice, to the point later on in the car between Sonny and Vinnie, where Steelgrave explains how Pat 'the cat' Patrice got his nickname. I think the number of pages devoted almost solely to dialogue in this scene was something that hadn't happened much before and that was real important for me. Two guys sitting in a car talking for four pages was an unusual circumstance, but it worked. My fondest recollection of that episode is that I could do it at all." While Burke may have been pleased with NEW BLOOD director Lyndon Chubbock saw it quite differently. "'New Blood' was a living nightmare almost all the time. You know how television works. You prep a show for seven days and you shoot for seven, so you have seven days to hire your cast, find your locations and do all the preproduction work. Well, a day into my prep the Director's Guild strike started and they struck about half the companies in Hollywood while the other half locked us out. They, in essence, fired me from WISEGUY and hired a Canadian director. But the strike only lasted one day, so they rehired me. But we ended up doing the first episode of the series with about three days prep. For the first episode, you should have had *twice* the normal time. In the middle, Ray got the flu and couldn't work for a couple of days. He tried to hang in there and we ended up having to shoot straight through some nights. One day we had 75 setups and 25 on another, just to make up the time we lost. It was a very tough experience." "From my point of view the crux of the problem goes back to the point when I was not involved with the show during the strike. They hired actors that I would not have hired. I wanted to hire Bill Hickey as Harry the Hunch. Now Bill has a reputation as a bad drinker and I don't know if it was that or the money, but while I was not on the show--and remember, I have casting authority as director--they hired this guy named Eric Christmas, and he did not deliver the kind of performance we wanted. That was the source of a problem between David Burke and I. It was like he was blaming me, but he's the guy who hired Eric." "At any rate that was the downside. Most of it circled around our short lack of prep and not being prepared to do this show to start off with. I think if we had more time, it would have been smoother, everyone would have been happier and everthing would have gone better. But Ray Sharkey was fabulous to work with, Ken Wahl was great. I don't know how they are now, but in the first episode they were great. The whole cast was good." "One thing you have to understand is that doing the first episode of any series is really like putting your head in the mouth of a lion, because you're doing it without knowing what their expectations are and there are so many more opportunities to fail than there are to succeed. But I thought the sсript was great. I thought, 'This is some of the best television writing I've ever read.' It just had such a voice to it. Instead of just being very generic, it was well written and I thought the idea was pure David Burke. I think he's tough to work with and has some very driven eccentricities, but he makes up for it with his talent as a writer. I think if you can pull that off, that's fine." "The one thing I can really say about WISEGUY is that when I worked there these people were really striving for quality and striving to make something good. So many people you work with in television are just striving to make *something*. Les Sheldon, David Burke, and Stephen Kronish, really were men that were trying to make something a cut above television, something special. Maybe that's why I would forgive them for whatever they might do because they are really there for long hours with great dedication to a quality show. They're like film-makers. A lot of guys crank out a lot of TV shows and if they don't work out they go on to the next one. These guys are not that way at all. They're very dedicated and very intense about WISEGUY."

NAMORA / Aquaria Nautica Neptunia – American Comics Book / Marvel 1947

How to book
Head to Google Flights and enter either London or Manchester as your departure airport along with Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane as the destination. You may want to add a “Etihad” filter to the airlines to help find the dates included in this deal.
Use Google Flights’ calendar tool to help you highlight the best travel dates (they’ll show up in green).
You can book directly with the airline for slightly more flexibility to make changes later, or, to save an additional £50 or so, head over to Skyscanner, re-enter your itinerary and book with the online travel agent offering the lowest fares.
Returns from London (LHR)
Sydney (SYD) – £575
Brisbane (BNE) – £581
Melbourne (MEL) – £560
Returns from Manchester (MAN)
Sydney (SYD) – £577
Brisbane (BNE) – £570
Melbourne (MEL) – £579
When to fly
The lowest fares are available between March and November, with some dates departing in mid-August too.
When to book
These fares should be available until 9 March, although popular dates could sell out sooner.
Pro tip
Etihad is one of the airlines that lets you mix and match destinations, so you can explore two of these cities in one trip just by booking a “multi-city” itinerary, and setting your return from another of Australia’s east coast cities. Then just book a cheap regional flight between them.

After my first fringe run, it’s hard to know what I’m feeling, but, I’m so glad that I’ve done it. I viewed it as a learning experience, and wanted to sell some of the 100 books that were delivered to my hostel. I could just about fit the 50 books that were left in my suitcase, so I feel like I did what I set out to achieve. In celebration, I also got my first two tattoos: a heart on my wrist, because that’s where I wear it, and leopard print on my shoulder, to symbolise She Grrrowls.
In terms of learning, I think I could have flyered better in terms of exit-flyering more rigorously. I did well with the Wee Blue Book, but the people taking them weren’t necessarily my audience, and I feel like people who would have liked it weren’t always reached. I tried to pace myself, but as a lone wolf, I saw more shows than people, and could have put myself out there more in terms of meeting other poets etc. Tim Wells bumped into me flyering and stressed the importance of networking, but it isn’t my best skill. For this, I was grateful for people like John Osborne who invited me to hang out at the Book Festival, which I didn’t know much about. Sadly, coming down with a cold meant I had to propose getting well again, but towards the end of the month I was also able to hang out with Tyrone Lewis and Jake Wild Hall from Boomerang Club, and met a few people through them. It was actually BC, along with Joel Auterson who inspired me to take She Grrrowls to the fringe having seen they did it the previous year.
The Fringe is so expensive to attend, even with a free venue, and so I wasn’t expecting to make a profit, or break even, but just hoped to have some money to help me get by. It had put me out of pocket for many months when working in Spain, and it was thanks to a week of teaching work in Wimbledon that I even had money to buy food. I have no savings. The only thing to alleviate the stress what when I secured a couple more weeks of work for September, and started to do interview for tutoring jobs from my hostel kitchen. I was paying over £800 for a mixed 6-bed dorm, and although this resulted in many sleepless nights due to snoring guests, the location was perfect, and it was pretty clean with a well-equipped kitchen. Doing a solo show I think I’d need something better, but I managed to survive it.
Initially, I was nervous about flyering, and not too excited to have to host the show. I found I surprised myself in both these areas. Flyering was okay when I could be myself, and there were hundreds of others doing the same. Hosting each night felt like I was training a set of muscles. However, there were a few times sexism reared its head. Once a man spoke to me about my event then asked to shake my hand. Except he brought it to his frog-like lips and kissed it. I felt violated. Then there was a time when a guy walked past, whipped a flyer out my hand only to throw it to the gutter – normally, not much to think of, except it seemed a deliberate reaction to the word “feminism” emboldened on the flyer. Just after this a group of guys I recognised (possibly fellow poets) approached me. At first they seemed friendly, but what they said to me was strange, hostile and intimidating. I doubted they would behave the way they did to a man, so regarded it as an act of sexism. And it wasn’t just me: Fay Roberts wrote an account for this problem here.
I did a few feature sets at nights such as Raise the Bar: Poetry Versus and That’s What She Said. Another thing I would have done would be more features and open mics, but this required more planning than I had realised, and I wasn’t quite sure where to look. I did suffer from “fringe flu” at one point, which was when the wonderful Jane Bradley, host of TWSS, gave me a lovely bag of goodies like grapes and tea and lozenges. When I wasn’t flyering, seeing shows, or doing shows, I was writing reviews for The Norwich Radical (one, two, and three), and applying for tutoring jobs for when I returned to London. This means I’m going to soon become self-employed when I start taking on tutoring clients.
I saw so many incredible shows that it would be impossible to list them all, but I will try now, and did try to tweet about them all during the fringe (categories may cross over).

At the end of the run I had a couple of nights still, catching the rest of the shows I could, and trying to do some non-fringe stuff. Having had a picnic for dinner on Calton Hill the night before, I treated myself to a lovely meal at MUMS after climbing Arthur’s Seat on my final day, and had my first try of haggis with a Full Scottish Breakfast the next morning (I spread it on toast and finished it, but I’m more of a hash brown girl). After cooking for myself everyday, aside from exactly two portions of chips and gravy, for the whole month, it was a worthy reward. I’d also been veggie the whole time, so meat was quite a treat.
Now it’s onto the next chapter – the book launch at The Five Bells in New Cross on Wednesday 20th September!
She Grrrowls does Edinburgh PBH Fringe Free Festival 2017 After my first fringe run, it's hard to know what I'm feeling, but, I'm so glad that I've done it.
