RecreASIAN Project 5
Today I recreated a LIFE photograph from December 1960 featuring model Marola Witt wearing supposedly a Suzy Perette dress.
The qipao/cheongsam style has always been popular, and I know many people are worried about cultural appropriation when wearing them or wearing similar styles. In the past few weeks, I’ve had great discussion with people regarding this and we keep coming back to “intention” and “execution”, but now I want to add “historical hostility or relationship between the culture of the wearer and the culture of the item”. Some might consider this cultural appropriation, some might not. For me, as long as you wear it respectfully and not for a costume or for a sexy burlesque act (Yes I’m bringing this up again!) I don’t have a problem with it. Anyway, I am not gonna pretend I know enough of Chinese culture or the historical background of qipao to judge others. And just because I look Chinese doesn’t mean I represent what people there might think. As a TCK I have a very different experience and relationship with Western culture and the countries I’ve lived in. With this post I want you to look back on editorials featuring white women in exotic locations. Were they always respectful? Did any make you uncomfortable? Why? .
