Diversity is being invited to the party, inclusion is being asked to dance
Tumblr media
I heard that example in a training years ago and it's stuck with me and I thought you might like it too. It's important to assess the different groups and communities we are in - are they diverse, inclusive, both or neither?
A group might look diverse but doesn't actually allow the members to speak up or self-criticise. A group might not be diverse at all but everyone feels a sense of belonging and feel empowered to say what they think. This is all very interesting as I'm getting more involved in various diversity and inclusion initiatives at work.
Sometimes I think these things might not be worth sharing because you might have heard about it at work or school, then I remembered that a lot of you might be self-employed or might be homemakers or carers and you don't get opportunities for such trainings. So I will try to share some of what I've learned here (and on Instagram), but hey let's learn together.

RecreASIAN Project 5
Tumblr media
Today I recreated a LIFE photograph from December 1960 featuring model Marola Witt wearing supposedly a Suzy Perette dress.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The qipao/cheongsam style has always been popular, and I know many people are worried about cultural appropriation when wearing them or wearing similar styles. In the past few weeks, I’ve had great discussion with people regarding this and we keep coming back to “intention” and “execution”, but now I want to add “historical hostility or relationship between the culture of the wearer and the culture of the item”. Some might consider this cultural appropriation, some might not. For me, as long as you wear it respectfully and not for a costume or for a sexy burlesque act (Yes I’m bringing this up again!) I don’t have a problem with it. Anyway, I am not gonna pretend I know enough of Chinese culture or the historical background of qipao to judge others. And just because I look Chinese doesn’t mean I represent what people there might think. As a TCK I have a very different experience and relationship with Western culture and the countries I’ve lived in. With this post I want you to look back on editorials featuring white women in exotic locations. Were they always respectful? Did any make you uncomfortable? Why? . Dress - Vintage 1940s/1950s qipao dress - @trunkofdresses Hat - Vintage 1960s - @poppycockvintage Fur stole - Vintage 1950s - eBay Earrings - Vintage 1950s bakelite Shoes - vintage-style - @misslfire

Papow Ponders #18: Multiculturalism In The Vintage Community
Papow Ponders #18: Multiculturalism In The Vintage Community
This week, Nora of @norafinds posted about multiculturalism in the vintage community. There was a great response with people tagging vintage lovers from a variety of backgrounds. Following the post, I spent some time considering this topic in greater depth. These are my personal views of what I have experienced and dealt with – obviously it’s not the same for everyone.
The vintage community, as…

Indy's 7 Fashion Bloggers of Choice
I planned to take my outfit post when I'm going to a meet-up today, but... As we know, universe isn't always on your side and I fell ill since yesterday. Instead... Now I'm going to talk about my favourite fashion bloggers! There's still more bloggers that I adore, now, I talk about bloggers that have impact of my blog and my clothing style. Keep in mind that this is my personal favourite and I'm yet to found more rad bloggers out there. So here's my list!
7. Nadia from nadiaaboulhosn
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bold. That's one word that can describe Nadia. Effortless yet experimental, she has no fear on flaunting her curves and wear her clothing in often unconventional way. From bodycon dress, leather legging that wore as pants, yoga pants, muscle shirt, to plaid flanel shirt that worn as dress, she manages to rock it!
6. Gabi from gabifresh
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Gabi was one of plus-size fashion blogger that inspire me to make a style blog myself, and I always love her radiant style and put-together outfit. Though her clothing heavily follow the trend, her style far from boring and usual!
5. Georgina from Cupcake's Clothes
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The overwhelming cuteness of her style and her overall blog will drawn you in! Georgina isn't afraid to look as girly as possible with her flowy pink hair and her clothing that almost always including the color pink, floral, whimsical print and accent, and handmade cute accessories. Now, while I'm not a very big fan of the color pink, when I first encounter Georgina's blog, she prove me that girl past size 12 can look delicate and wear cute clothes.
4. Nora from norafinds
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Her vintage dresses are to die for! Nora are very determined to got an autenthic vintage clothing, and always looks elegant no matter the occassion. I'm excited to find fellow Asian that are into vintage, therefore, she's from Indonesia!
3. Brittany from vavoomvintageblog
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I just found Brittany's blog few days ago, but she got her vintage style on point and I fell in love. Not only she got inspirations for daily vintage clothing, but she wasn't hesitant at giving advice on building vintage style and share her broad knowledge on earlier era fashion. Aside from her outfits, Brittany also blogs about her daily activities with her family and her crafts.
2. Ragini from curiousfancy
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I appealed by Ragini's blog by by her uniquely put-together, colourful, and childish (in good way) attire. Peter Pan collar, cute hats and brooch and soft colours are often found in Ragini's outfits. But not only that, she also an amazing writer. Along with her outfit post, we often found her open and shameless writing about her past and emotional experience, with poignant style that drawn you in. She got style, and she got story.
1. Kate from scathinglybrilliant
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oh my, I envy her so so much! From her over-the-top cuteness nature and outfit, Kate are experimental with her clothing. She sure got a closet full of dresses to die for, and creative as hell. On her blog, you would often found a post about her DIY project, including redecorating the kitchen and keep her bedroom looks fancy (a total opposite of MY bedroom). Makes you wonder how come she got time for all of that?

Is feminism obsolete?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This time I recreated a 1950s vintage suit editorial I ponder about how suits are worn by many women as a symbol of gender equality, freedom to work and of power. But it also makes me wonder if feminism has been obsolete in the recent racial discussion? I thought back on a recent feminist event at work and how some WOC I talked to didn’t want to get involved or photographed during the event. They expressed how racism was a bigger problem for them than sexism. In many parts of the world, many womxn are still fighting against cultural patriarchy, FGM (Female Genital Mutilation), forced marriages and systemic sexual abuse. Black and Indigenous womxn in many Western countries experience much more discriminations and violence compared to other POC and white women. However, the most common feminist issues we here are about discrimination against mothers, gender pay gap, or how we don’t have enough female leaders. All these issues matter, but surely we need to rethink the way feminism works. Feminism needs to include every womxn - any age, colour, culture, and trans. Feminism needs to work for all womxn and not just the white, cis, straight, middle and upper-class women. Vintage 1950s Lilli Annette suit - Ooh La La! Clothing group Corsage - shop no longer exists Vintage 1960s David Jones hat - thrifted in Sydney Vintage 1960s gloves - thrifted
