The Best Picture Oscar My Way (2000-2022)

After doing this list, I suddenly got inspired to do this sort of thing for some of the other Academy Award categories. For this project I got the following things to say:

Many of the win/nomination changes will be based more on some infamous or otherwise perceived snubs (i.e. Martin Scorsese needing to wait until The Departed for a Best Director win). In general, the changes are based on what the frequent consensus seems to be from what I’ve seen.

I may STILL keep a few of those same snubs if it simply lines up more with the film’s initial reactions at the time (i.e. Clockwork Orange).

There are some changes that the Oscars applied to certain categories over the years (i.e. Sound Mixing & Sound Editing becoming just Best Sound). For this list’s sake, I’ll apply some of my OWN cases of said changes applying (such as the Best Picture expansion from 5 to 10 occurring earlier since, in hindsight, they probably should’ve done that sooner). In case of that change, I’ll just apply it earlier (starting in 1997).

Said expansion has resulted in no less than 8 nominations in Best Picture at a time, so that’ll be my minimum (until 2021, where it was officially made the set amount no questions asked).

Gonna try to keep EGOTs as best as I can. Luckily for this category, there’s currently only one that’ll matter.

More inclusive wins (POC; LGBT) will be more likely to stay. There may be some exceptions after I’ve already made my own inclusive alternatives.

For the early years where Best Picture went to the studio instead (for some godforsaken reason), I’ll just pretend that’s not the case.

Due to some weird, borderline convoluted rules with Best International Feature Film (Mainly that this category doesn’t require US theater plays, but most other ones do), I’ll often go off of an eligible film’s year of original release unless they managed nominations the following year (City of God; Spirited Away)

For Best Picture, I’m only gonna list the nominated producer for newly added films (here’s the Wikipedia page for the rest). I will mostly go with the ones credited as “produced by” or “p.g.a.” (if the latter is shown) on IMDB as the nominees. Limit is five.

Animation Night 38: Mamoru Oshii

Hey there friends! It’s time for Animation Night again. Still not gotten round to filling in last week’s Lupin post, but it’ll come. Anyway...

Well, the last many months, we’ve been working our way down the list of big name anime auteurs - and it’s time for this guy!

Mamoru Oshii is surely best known for his famous film adaptation of Masamune Shirow’s Ghost in the Shell, but that’s actually something I’m gonna be saving for next week when we’ll be doing a dive (off the rooftops) into that franchise. Instead, this week I want to share some of Oshii’s various other films, bc they can be quite a mood!

So, from the top! It probably explains a lot to note that Oshii grew up watching a lot of artsy European films by people like “Federico Fellini, Ingmar Bergman, Michelangelo Antonioni and Jean-Pierre Melville” (thanks WP). He went into anime storyboarding pretty much straight out of uni in the 70s, working on fairly minor baseball anime; the break came in 1981 where he joined Studio Pierrot to work on the scifi romcom series Urusei Yatsura, especially the second film where he started to indulge in time loop plots and pouring the philosophy juice.

While scifi movies would turn out to be the niche that best suited Oshii, his first step away from TV anime was to try a new format for anime: Dallos (1983-4) was the very first OVA, which is startling considering how quickly the format took off by the end of the 80s. You can read someone’s very detailed plot summary here; according to that guy, it was left frustratingly unfinished after four episodes, and the story wasn’t a great deal to write home about, hence largely forgotten beyond the ‘first OVA’ footnote.

Oshii, meanwhile, had a much more exciting plan - he was planning a Lupin III film. From the sounds of things, what he had in mind was a sort of cyborg-filled, GitS-like take on Lupin, but the premise was too weird for Tōhō and Yomiuri; having heavily advertised Oshii as the director (I guess he was already a ~marketable name~ back then?) they decided to just cancel the film! Tragic honestly, I’d love to see an Oshii take on Lupin, that would be fucking wild.

Oshii took the ideas with him, and instead went ahead to direct one of his first really personal films: Angel’s Egg, at Studio Deen (not one familiar to me, but they seem to be a v long running studio who’ve worked on quite a bit of high profile stuff including Ranma, the first Fate anime, and the Higurashi/Umineko adaptations).

This is where we hit the art, or if you prefer, vibes, that Oshii is known for! Angel’s Egg is almost wordless, full of surreal, frequently biblical imagery and gorgeous Yoshitaka Amano character design. The plot is kind of abstract, but broadly, a soldier boy is wandering a strange empty land where armies fight shadow fishes; one day he encounters a girl with a giant egg, who asks him not to break it... and the egg remains totally fine and definitely does not get broken at some later point in the film no way 🙃

Oshii had grown up Christian, but while making this film, he became disillusioned with his religion, and well it’s not a stretch to see that getting metaphorised in the film! But while this is the usual angle taken by critics, Oshii has himself refused to give a specific interpretation of the film. In any case, here we see the onset of certain images that would recur throughout Oshii’s films: fossils and extinct animals, military imagery of soldiers locked into aimless tasks...

Following Angel’s Egg, whose producer Toshio Suzuki was among the founders of Ghibli, Oshii briefly collaborated with Miyazaki and Takahata towards a film that would be called Anchor, only to fall out over some kind of vague creative differences. Instead, it was time for the ‘militarised police force’ era of Oshii’s career!

Joining a small creative collective called Headgear at the invitation of his friend, screenwriter Kazunori Itō, Oshii would spend the next few years on two parallel strands: the extremely down-to-earth mecha series Patlabor, imagining the cops of a near-future setting where mechas are ubiquitous and not always reliable; and the mostly live-action Kerberos series, which grimly imagines a future where Japan went full fash again, creating a specialist police force in blatantly SS-inspired gear who end up going rogue.

I’ve seen the first Patlabor film some time ago, and a lot of it is like, squad room shenanigans, though it has some very impressive action scenes at the end on a collapsing artificial island. We can certainly trace some of its influences to events at the time - like with Akira, there is for example the Tokyo housing bubble taking place in the 80s, which is in the film transformed into literal hopeless attempts to construct artificial islands. Machinery runs amok in civilian neighbourhoods, etc. etc. It saw the beginning of Oshii’s long collaboration with composer Kenji Kawai, though not yet at the heights of his GitS soundtrack!

But it’s the second Patlabor film is the one which seems to be best known: Patlabor 2 (1994) saw Oshii work with the renowned Production I.G., and things more geopolitical, imagining a conflict between different branches of the JSDF stemming ultimately from a failed ‘peacekeeping’ mission in Cambodia which turns a military commander against the political authorities. (In real life, Japan sent police forces along with a number of other countries under the UN to Cambodia in the aftermath of the Cambodia-Vietnam war as ‘peacekeepers’ in the early 90s, so that would have been pretty fresh in the news.)

This leads to some remarkable scenes of martial law being imposed and tanks rolling through Tokyo while the civilian population sits by. Looking for more background to this, I came across this interview with an American magazine; Oshii describes his intent as reflecting Japan’s role in the cold war:

OSHII: I think it may be difficult for Americans to understand. The story is really based on political programs that exist in Japan, so it has quite a few deep meanings within it. In Patlabor 2, I wanted to describe the Cold War for Japan. It was a war, but a silent war. When the Cold War existed between the U.S. and Russia, the "stance" of Japan was not to be directly involved. Even though Japan was involved, it kept insisting for fifty years that it wasn't. I wanted to describe that fake peace.

To contextualise a bit - in the years after their defeat by America in WWII, Japan signed a number of defence treaties making them an ally of the United States and letting the US maintain military bases their, pretty much perpetually, though not without significant protest against further alignment with the US in the cold war. For their own part, article 9 of the post-war constitution, Japan renounced the ‘right to belligerency’ and prohibited maintaining an army. In practice, though, they have a developed pretty big one, and were a close ally of the US in e.g. providing logistical support for Vietnam and deploying troops through the UN in ‘peacekeeping’ operations. Yet officially, Article 9 still applies, and is (to my understanding) considered quite important; wanting to revoke it is a pretty hardline nationalist position.

I also came across a much more in-depth interview where Oshii talks to Hayao Miyazaki. It’s a remarkable interview, as much for getting a sense of Miyazaki’s worldview as Oshii’s (also: Miyazaki is quite mean! though Oshii hardly seems to mind). As far as the film, Miyazaki seems to think the film is decent entertainment, but seems unimpressed with the film’s stance:

Miyazaki: About the conversation between Arakawa and Goto about the false peace and war of justice, that enumeration of words, I thought that "here we go again, the Oshii tune as usual."  I thought that that's what you've been saying all the time, but since they are fast-talking, we can not stop and think (while watching the movie).  So, you have removed the organic agriculture, you have removed the debate at the Diet, in short, the most tiresome things in our daily life, the worldly nitty-gritty, you removed all those things, and created a computer game in the Oshii world.  I saw the movie as such.  Before I saw it, I had thought that Oshii-san's book of thoughts might have come out, but (after I saw it), I thought that Oshii-san was in the mental state of moving to Izu to settle down to watch Tokyo. -laughs-

Oshii:  That's fairly close. -laughs-

Miyazaki:  In that sense, it was interesting until I saw your hands.  But the minute you set up the movie with more worldly settings so that it will have a more interesting conspiracy, such as, "it was the Clinton government's trap to inflict economic damage on Japan, or to gain a political compromise (from Japan)," it further loses reality.  America is also in a fix.  If they do (fight), I feel that it will be a more stupid, violent, simple, kids' brawl.  Such as not buying Japanese cars anymore.  But this is complicated, too.  What about American cars with Japanese engines? -laughs-

I admit, my interest in this film was mostly spurred by fans talking about the impact of some of its scenes, so I’m looking forward to seeing what our take on this angle might be...

Meanwhile, as far as Kerberos, I admit I don’t know a great deal about this one. The series comprises a trilogy of films, two live action and finally one animated in Jin-Roh, which is the best-known of the series. The second you see the armour on the cover you know it’s about fascism lol. Beginning as a manga and spreading to Japanese and Korean film, anime, and a bunch of other media including even fucking... monographs (???), it’s set in a grim alternate 1950s, in which different branches of the state’s violent apparatus conflict with each other as well as the insurrectionary ‘Sect’. The background is surely the real political turmoil of that time, epitomised by events like the assassination of communist political figure Inejirō Asanuma by an ultranationalist with a sword.

For our purposes, the one that gets the most attention is the third film, Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade (1999), and the first to be made as anime - though it was actually remade as a Korean live-action film a couple of years ago. The film concerns a member of the Kerberos division (the guys in the SS-looking armour) who is put on trial after he hesitates to kill a girl carrying an IED, only to come into contact with someone who is allegedly her older sister after her release. The story is framed through Little Red Riding Hood; if you ask random youtube video essays I found, it does so in order to complicate an overly simple victim/villain binary but idk that might just be that guy’s take (for my part, it seems pretty obvious that the guys in nazi armour are the bad guys and it’s probably good to blow them up).

I won’t be screening this tonight bc, ngl, no matter how gorgeously it’s shot and animated, the heavy fash imagery makes me uneasy and I want to see what it’s doing with it!

Oh yeah, and in between making Patlabor 2 and Jin-Roh, Oshii did a little number called Ghost in the Shell. More on that next week! But GitS is notable for many things: meticulous direction, stunning imagery (Production IG absolutely killing it on the animation front), and overall effectively distilling Shirow’s chaotic manga down to Oshii’s preferred philosophical themes. It’s no surprise that it’s the film that got him international recognition.

In the 2000s, Oshii went back to live action, directing a fascinating-sounding movie called Avalon about a VR game in 2001, followed by the psychedelic Assault Girls in 2009 (which I’ve heard good things about from @velocityvsreality​ who is far more familiar with the tokusatsu world!) He also played around with CG imagery, as in Mezame no Hakabune/Open Your Mind (2005), which was a sequence of psychedlic visuals set to Kenji Kawai’s fantastic music that played in iMax theatres. Like much of Oshii’s films, it’s concerned with evolution, there are military themes, it puts striking imagery above all else... it’s a cool watch.

In terms of anime, though! He made a sequel to GitS, titled Innocence, which was sadly not all that successful. In 2009, though, he started on another original story: The Sky Crawlers, depicting a world in which strangely emotionless clone children fly WWII-like aeroplanes as a sublimated form of war. As with many of Oshii’s films, it’s slow and contemplative, meticulous with tech... it has, sadly, been years since I watched this film so I can’t immediately summarise what it does with the theme, but I still remember it as creating a striking mood that stayed with me after the film.

The last decade has seen Oshii return once more to live action, working in scifi films and suspense thrillers, but I am running out of time to research these! But he is actually coming back to anime sometime presumably very soon, with the series Vladlove (a name that is palindromic when transliterated into Japanese) being announced as a kind of... yuri vampire comedy??? Definitely not something I expected given Oshii’s filmmaking habits so far, but I’m sure it’s gonna be one to watch!

New inexpensive and nontoxic method for creating benzene (C.6H.6) rings

Chemical syntheses in liquids and gases take place in three-dimensional space. Random collisions between molecules have to result in something new in an extremely short time. But there is another way: on a gold surface under ultrahigh vacuum conditions, molecules lying still next to each other can be made to combine—even those that would never want to react with each other in a liquid. Researchers at Empa have now discovered such a reaction. Best of all, the experts can "take pictures" and watch every step of the reaction.

In chemistry, there are structures that are particularly stable, such as the so-called "benzene ring" consisting of six interconnected carbon atoms. Such rings form the structural basis for graphite and graphene, but they also occur in many dyes—such as the jeans dye indigo and in many drugs such as aspirin.

When chemists wanted to build such rings in a targeted manner, they used so-called coupling reactions, which usually bear the name of their inventors: for example, the Diels-Alder reaction, the Ullmann reaction, the Bergman cyclization or the Suzuki coupling. Now there is another one that does not yet have a name. It was discovered by a team from Empa together with the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research in Mainz. Everything in the dry

The Empa researchers omitted liquids in their chemical synthesis and instead attached the starting materials to a gold surface in an ultra-high vacuum. The starting material (diisopropyl-p-terphenyl) can be observed resting calmly in the cooled-down scanning tunneling microscope before the researchers turn up the heat.

Turn up the heating—movement on the dance floor

At room temperature, nothing happens yet, but at about 200 degrees Celsius, an amazing reaction occurs that would never happen in liquids: the two isopropyl groups—which are normally completely inactive from a chemical point of view—combine to form a benzene ring. The reason: due to the firm "adhesion" on the gold surface, a hydrogen atom is first loosened and then released from the molecule. This creates carbon radicals that are waiting for new partners. And there are many partners on the gold surface. At 200 degrees Celsius, the molecules vibrate and perform rapid pirouettes—there is a lot of movement on the golden dance floor. So what belongs together soon gets together.

And once again everything in slow motion

Matchmaking on the golden surface has two advantages. First, there is no need for coercion: the reaction takes place without mediating boric acids or halogen atoms flying away. It is a coupling involving only saturated hydrocarbons. The starting materials are cheap and easy to obtain, and there are no toxic byproducts.

The second advantage is that the researchers can watch every step of the reaction—another thing that is not possible with classical, "liquid" chemistry. The Empa team simply turns up the heating of the gold surface gradually. At 180 degrees Celsius, the molecules have only connected one arm with their neighbors, the second still protrudes freely into the dance floor. If one now cools down the gold surface inside a scanning tunneling microscope, one can view and "photograph" the molecules just before they are "married off." This is exactly what the researchers did. Thus, the reaction mechanism can been followed in the form of "snapshots."

Opportunities for a 'new' chemistry

The researchers and their colleagues expect two kinds of effects to emerge from the current work. First, the "snapshot method" could also be suitable for elucidating completely different reaction mechanisms. At Empa, instruments are being developed that use ultrashort laser pulses in a scanning tunneling microscope to elucidate such chemical reactions step by step. This could provide additional insights into chemical reactions and soon shake up many an old theory.

 However, the research results "from the dry" could also be useful to further develop "liquid" chemistry. So far, most of the reactions documented in the literature have come from classical liquid chemistry, and scanning probe researchers have been able to recreate these experiments. In the future, certain reactions could also be designed in the scanning tunneling microscope and later transferred to liquid or gaseous chemistry.

Perfect homecoming: Aegerter puts Ten Kate Racing on top after day 1 at Assen   The Swiss rider went under lap record pace in both practice sessions at the iconic Dutch venue as the Dutch Ten Kate Racing outfit look for victory on home soil

The FIM Supersport World Championship returned to action at the TT Circuit Assen for the Prosecco DOC Dutch Round with Swiss rider Dominique Aegerter (Ten Kate Racing Yamaha) topping the combined classification as he took to the track adorned in iconic yellow colours on both his leathers and Yamaha YZF-R6 as his Ten Kate Race outfit celebrated their home race.

ODENDAAL VS AEGERTER

The morning Free Practice 1 session was a battle between Aegerter and Steven Odendaal (Evan Bros. WorldSSP Yamaha Team) as the South African rider looked to get back to winning ways and close the gap to Aegerter in the Championship. Both riders went under the lap record throughout the day, with Aegerter posting a 1’37.274s to top the times at the end of Friday by just 0.041s; the duo separated by just over a tenth but half-a-second clear of their nearest rivals.

Spanish rider Manuel Gonzalez (Yamaha ParkinGo Team) put in a strong last lap at the end of the disrupted Free Practice 2 session to slot into third place as he goes in search for his first WorldSSP podium at the venue he made his Moto2

debut at a few weeks ago. Philipp Oettl (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing) claimed fourth place on his Kawasaki ZX-6R, the only rider to not improve in the afternoon Free Practice 2 session.

ROUNDING OUT THE TOP TEN

2019 WorldSSP Champion Randy Krummenacher (EAB Racing Team) had a strong Friday showing as he continues to build up speed on his return to the Championship with fifth place, ahead of Frenchman Jules Cluzel (GMT94 Yamaha) in sixth. Turkish star Can Öncü (Kawasaki Puccetti) claimed seventh place, just three tenths behind his teammate, as he looks to kickstart his campaign and fight for podiums and victories.

Estonian rider Hannes Soomer (Kallio Racing) claimed a top-ten finish on Friday with eighth place in the combined classification, finishing less than a tenth ahead of Niki Tuuli (MV Agusta Corse Clienti). Tuuli had a disrupted day on Friday after he suffered a highside crash on his MV Agusta F3 675 machine in Free Practice 1, although he was able to take to the track afterwards. Kevin Manfredi (Altogo Racing Team) claimed a top ten finish and was also the highest place WorldSSP Challenge rider in the standings after Friday.

LOOKING TO BREAK INTO THE TOP TEN

It’s a close field in WorldSSP after Friday running at Assen with Italian rider Federico Caricasulo (GMT94 Yamaha) missing out on a spot in the top ten by just 0.029s; eventually finishing in 11th place. Raffaele De Rosa (Orelac Racing VerdNatura) claimed 12th place, with Mattia Casadei (VFT Racing), a substitute rider for Davide Pizzoli, in 13th place.

A strong opening to the season for Luca Bernardi (CM Racing) wasn’t enough to put the Sammarinese rider into the top ten as he finished in 14th place, over a second behind Aegerter’s time, with Michel Fabrizio (G.A.P. MOTOZOO Racing by Puccetti) rounding out the top 15.

Sheridan Morais (Wojcik Racing Team), standing in for the injured Christoffer Bergman, claimed 16th on his return to the Championship for the first time in three years, finishing ahead of the also-returning Peter Sebestyen (Evan Bros. WorldSSP Yamaha Team); Sebestyen making his return to the Championship with the Evan Bros. outfit. Daniel Webb (WRP Wepol Racing) claimed 18th spot on his return from injury with Vertti Takala (Kallio Racing) and Leonardo Taccini (Orelac Racing VerdNatura) completing the top 20.

TO NOTE…

Suzuki made a return to the WorldSSP paddock with Finnish rider Eemeli Lahti (HRP Suzuki) in 23rd place. The afternoon Free Practice 2 session was interrupted by a Red Flag when Shogo Kawasaki (G.A.P. MOTOZOO Racing by Puccetti) crashed with around five minutes of the 45-minute; Kawasaki able to walk away from the crash and the session resuming after a short delay. Kawasaki was declared unfit following the crash with a right wrist contusion and concussion.

Claire Denis, homenajeada del 23 Festival de Cine de Lima: 7 claves para comprender la trascendencia de su obra

Claire Denis (París, 1946) se encuentra sin duda entre las directoras de cine más importantes de los últimos treinta años, y, por qué no decirlo, de todos los tiempos. El que el Festival de Cine de Lima la invite y rinda un homenaje en esta 23 edición, es no solamente una acertada decisión, sino un acontecimiento para la cinefilia local y una oportunidad para la aproximación. Anotemos algunas claves para ayudarnos a comprender la trascendencia de la obra y figura de Claire Denis.

1. Sus películas suelen estar en las listas de críticos de lo mejor del año. Más allá, por ejemplo, S'en fout la mort (1990) y Beau travail (1999) figuran en la lista del conocido libro 1001 películas que hay que ver antes de morir, editado por Steven Schneider, mientras que L'intrus (2004) fue escogido dentro de los mejores filmes de la década 2000-2009 por la Cinematheque del Festival Internacional de Cine de Toronto, y White Material (2009), entre las mejores películas del siglo 21, en una encuesta formulada por la BBC a 177 críticos alrededor del mundo, así como en una top 25 de los críticos del New York Times. A su vez, High Life (2018) está entre las 100 mejores películas de la década de los 2010s, según la comentada reciente lista de Indiewire.

2. Claire Denis ha forjado un estilo propio y reconocible en estos treinta años de filmografía suya. Fue criada en países como Senegal, Burkina Faso y Camerún, en la época que eran colonias francesas. De allí que un tema recurrente en su obra haya sido el colonialismo y poscolonialismo, como en Beau travail (1999) y las autobiográficas Chocolat (1988), y White Material (2009), que están entre sus filmes más aclamados. En su tránsito por géneros está presente el drama bélico o la meditación filosófica, pero también el melodrama familiar y la comedia romántica. Cómo no, Denis tampoco le ha rehuido al cine erótico o el thriller de terror, hasta llegar a la ciencia ficción. Entre otros sellos, su mirada cinematográfica se posa sobre los rostros y cuerpos de sus protagonistas; y sus movimientos, a menudo pausados; otras veces, muy coreográficos.

3. Decenas de veces ha sido nominada a premios y sus filmes elegidos en selecciones oficiales en competencia de relevantes festivales de cine, incluidos los de Cannes, Venecia, San Sebastián y Sitges. Asimismo, entre sus distinciones destacadas están el Leopardo de Oro en el Festival de Locarno, por Nénette et Boni (1996); el Prix SACD al mejor guión en la Semana de la Crítica de Cannes, por Un beau soleil intérieur (2017); y el premio FIPRESCI a la mejor película del Festival de Cine de San Sebastián, por High Life (2018). Todo aparte de más de un homenaje al conjunto de su carrera. Uno de ellos, el del Festival de Estocolmo, la reconoce como una directora que “continúa buscando lo que otros rechazan, siempre sin miedos, y con un ojo particular para la poesía visual.”.

4. La ficción de Claire Denis parte de o ha sido inspirada por la literatura, el ensayo o el cine clásico, no obstante también por lo real, biográfico o autobiográfico. Más bien su incursión en el cine documental ha sido puntual, como en sus segmentos en los antológicos À propos de Nice, la suite (1995), sobre la ciudad francesa de Niza, y Venice 70: Future Reloaded (2013), reflexiones sobre el futuro del cine; o como en Man No Run (1989) y Vers Mathilde (2005), que han versado sobre historias de música y danza; la primera sobre Les Têtes Brulées, una banda camerunesa; la segunda sobre Mathilde Monnier, una coreógrafa francesa. De hecho, la música no está ausente del cine de Denis y notable es su preferencia por Tindersticks, una agrupación inglesa de rock alternativo que tiene publicados varios soundtracks originales para películas suyas.

5. Antes de escribir y dirigir Chocolat (1988), su opera prima, Denis se desempeñó en la asistencia de dirección o en la dirección de segunda unidad de una veintena de películas desde 1974. Entre ellas, fue primera asistente de dirección de maestros y películas icónicas como Hanna K. (1983), de Costa-Gavras; Down by Law (1986), de Jim Jarmusch; y París, Texas (1984) y El cielo sobre Berlín (1987), de Wim Wenders. Este video de la serie “Closet Picks” de Criterion, nos da cuenta de su amor hacia autores como Dreyer, Godard, Demy, Suzuki, Hawks y Bergman. Sin embargo, nos gusta quedarnos con su relación de amistad y admiración hacia Agnès Varda: “ella hizo cosas por su cuenta cuando nadie más podría… Estaba siempre por delante, tomando lo que ella quisiera.” (Interview Magazine).

6. Agnès Varda (1928-2019) era probablemente la máxima personificación viva de la fuerte mujer directora de cine. Apostamos a que Claire Denis ocupa ahora ese lugar y representa necesaria inspiración. Para anotar muestra de ello, una directora en ascenso de firme visión es la estadounidense Greta Gerwig, quien ha dicho de Denis: “La realizadora que hizo que me enamorara del cine fue Claire Denis con Beau travail, que vi cuando tenía 19 años mientras estaba en la universidad. Yo entré cuando la estaban proyectando y me quedé fascinada porque nunca antes había visto algo así.” (La Vanguardia). Específicamente hablando del presente movimiento de cine francés hecho por mujeres (Mia Hansen-Love, Céline Sciamma, Justine Triet, Emmanuelle Bercot, son sólo algunas de sus integrantes), podemos hablar de Claire Denis como de quien se encuentra a la cabeza del mismo.

10 diretores que nunca fizeram um filme ruim

Às vezes, mesmo os grandes cineastas cometem alguns deslizes na carreira e produzem filmes ruins, que não agradam a crítica especializada e nem o público. “Você Vai Conhecer o Homem dos Seus Sonhos” (2010), de Woody Allen; “Jack” (1996), de Francis Ford Coppola; e “Indiana Jones e o Reino da Caveira de Cristal” (2008), de Steven Spielberg; são alguns bons exemplos de que até os melhores podem falhar. Mas, o site norte-americano Taste of Cinema elaborou uma lista com dez diretores que nunca fizeram um filme ruim ao longo da carreira. A seleção conta com cineastas de diferentes épocas e nacionalidades, como o japonês Akira Kurosawa, o italiano Sergio Leone e o iraniano Asghar Farhadi.

O diretor mais antigo da lista, Akira Kurosawa produziu 32 filmes ao longo dos seus 50 anos de carreira, sendo considerado um dos cineastas mais importantes da história do cinema. Ele conseguiu uma enorme influência fora do Japão, sendo citado como inspiração por grandes nomes, como Steven Spielberg e Stanley Kubrick. “Os Sete Samurais” (1954) e “Yojimbo” (1961) são algumas de suas obras mais conhecidas.

2 — Stanley Kubrick (1928-1999)

Stanley Kubrick construiu uma filmografia sólida e era conhecido por exibir um controle meticuloso de sua arte, pois comandava cada estágio da produção de seus longas. Ele se tornou um cineasta cobiçado com o filme “Glória Feita de Sangue” (1957) e alavancou ainda mais sua carreira com “Spartacus” (1960). Apesar de nunca se esquivar de temas controversos e de ser totalmente independente em suas criações, ele conseguiu um lugar de destaque em Hollywood.

3 — Sergio Leone (1929-1989)

Sergio Leone é mais conhecido por inventar o subgênero Spaghetti Western, os filmes italianos no estilo faroeste. Ao lado do compositor Ennio Morricone, que era seu amigo de infância, Leone foi capaz de criar longas antológicos com orçamentos baixíssimos, como a trilogia “Dólares” (1964-1066), estrelada pelo até então desconhecido Clint Eastwood. “Era Uma Vez no Oeste” (1969) e “Era Uma Vez na América” (1984) são outras obras famosas de Sergio Leone.

4 — Andrei Tarkovski (1932-1986)

Andrei Tarkovski foi o principal cineasta da União Soviética do século 20. Segundo Ingmar Bergman, Tarkovski inventou uma nova linguagem para o cinema, “capturando a vida como um sonho”. Seu estilo era tão único, que ficou conhecido como “tarkovskiano”. Sua filmografia conta com apenas sete filmes, mas todos se tornaram clássicos do cinema. Villeneuve iniciou sua carreira em 2001, com o filme “Maelström”, ganhador de vários prêmios em festivais ao redor do mundo. Esse reconhecimento era inesperado, já que o diretor ainda estava dando os primeiros passos. Seu trabalho continuou sendo observado e os próximos filmes o levaram a uma ascensão em Hollywood. 9 — Paul Thomas Anderson (1970- )

Paul Thomas Anderson se encantou pelo universo cinematográfico ainda na infância e começou sua carreira como assistente de produção em filmes de baixo orçamento. Aos poucos, ele passou a elaborar seus próprios longas e o reconhecimento chegou em sua segunda obra, “Boogie Nights — Prazer sem Limites” (1997), que recebeu três indicações ao Oscar. Extremamente dedicado e meticuloso, ele possui apenas oito títulos em sua filmografia. “O Mestre” (2012) e “Trama Fantasma” (2017) são os mais aclamados.

10 — Asghar Farhadi (1972-)

O escritor e diretor iraniano Ashgar Farhadi é especialista em retratar as nuances dos relacionamentos entre as pessoas e da vida cotidiana. Seus primeiros filmes ganharam vários prêmios, mas a maior honraria veio em 2012, quando “A Separação” ganhou o Oscar de Melhor Filme Estrangeiro, o primeiro do Irã. Esse feito se repetiu em 2017, com o longa “O Apartamento”. A última obra de Farhadi, “Todos Já Sabem” (2018), não possui a mesma complexidade dos outros, mas foi considerada um drama envolvente, com ótimo elenco.
