Ok, Max... I enjoy your knowledge of military history and trivia, so #21. And #25 because I’m curious.
21. You're put in charge of the National Shipbuilding Strategy for the Royal Canadian Navy and Canadian Coast Guard. What are your procurement priorities over the next three decades?
OK, first—sorry I took so long to answer this! I know you enjoy history and trivia—and that's good, because there's a fair bit to unpack here. Apologies for the jargon.
So. The National Shipbuilding Strategy. I hate it, thanks! Specifically the Canadian Surface Combatant (CSC)—it's pork barrel politics on the most massive scale to build large warships in Canadian yards at such an inflated price. I suppose there's an argument to be made for building them at home, but I don't buy it. Icebreakers and offshore patrol vessels yes, but multirole patrol frigates? Far cheaper in foreign yards. So we're going back in time a few years and install yours truly as the (fictional, fanciful) Czar of Canadian Shipbuilding.
Let's start with the basics. Why do we need a Navy and Coast Guard, and what do they need to get the job done right?
Canada is a capital-M Maritime Nation. We border three oceans and have the world's longest coastline. 90% of international trade in bulk travels by water—it's always been the cheapest, easiest way to move heavy goods (as Norman Friedman is fond of saying, it costs less to move a car from Yokohama to New York by sea than to move a similar car by rail from Detroit). Guess who exports some bulky products? Canada. Guess who relies on the regular delivery to ice-free ports of produce and finished goods to maintain a high standard of living? Almost everyone on earth at this point. I live on a boggy rock in the North Atlantic—without maritime trade, it's a starvation diet of cranberries and moose-meat for me and my family. That's why you need a Navy—to secure fair access to the global commons, and to regulate and enforce the sustainable harvest of marine resources, for Canada and the world. You can raise, train and equip an army in under a year from scratch if you need to, but you can't wish a navy into existence out of thin air—modern warships can take ten years or more to build, and they are expensive. So let's talk fleet architecture and procurement strategies.
Icebreakers! We need them urgently, in all sizes but especially a Heavy Icebreaker. The proposed CCGS John G. Diefenbaker should have been a priority for domestic shipbuilding—it was intended to replace the Louis S St.-Laurent, which launched in 1966 and should've retired two decades ago. This need will only become more pressing as a warming Arctic makes the Northwest Passage a more viable route for international shipping.
Forget building the CSC at home—order frigates from European yards, or plan on piggybacking the USN's FFG(X) project. I'd probably take a dozen or so British-built Type 26s.
I've seen the Harry DeWolf-class Arctic / Offshore Patrol Vessel (AOPV) derided as a 'slushbreaker' but she's not bad. Would I like a thicker hull? Sure, but the additional costs aren't worth it, not for her RCN job description—I'd rather prioritize icebreaker capability in CCGS vessels. She's already pricey for an OPV, but it leaves Irving Shipyards something to chew on (I'm not completely unswayed by political arguments for domestic construction).
Joint Support Ships. Because Vancouver's Seaspan yard needs some love too, and because underway support and logistics is sexy.
Finally, Submarines! Our aging Victoria-class boats ought to be replaced, ideally by nuclear-powered subs capable of under-ice operations. Now that n-word's a hard sell, and not just to the Canadian public—the idea's been floated in the past, but nobody's especially keen on exporting their SSNs (and we can't build them here). So we'll likely have to settle for diesel boats—6 at a minimum to ensure operational availability, since you can expect 2 out of 3 vessels to be in maintenance or refit at any given time. I like SSKs but recent advances in Air-Independent Propulsion (AIP) notwithstanding, they can't do sustained polar ops, which is where a lot of... interesting stuff happens underwater (Russia knows the contours of our Arctic shelf far better than we do, for instance. And what was that mysterious Ping in the Hecla and Fury Strait?) So what do we need subs for? Well, partly I just think they're neat. No navy is complete without a subsurface component. They're deadly in war but what they really excel at in peacetime is surveillance. When Spanish trawlers were violating our Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) during the 'Turbot Wars', it was our Oberon-class boats (along with CCGS vessels) that played a key role in collecting the evidence needed to chase them down in international courts. Additionally, operating submarines means we're part of the international waterspace management system through which foreign navies are obligated to inform us of submarines operating in or near our waters, which is also nice to know.
Phew! That was an earful, I hope I didn't put you to sleep. I could go on but I probably shouldn't.
25. If you could instantly master any language, which would it be and why?
Mandarin. I love the history and culture and literature of China. I have a few friends in Taiwan that I chat with from time to time. Someday I’d love to visit. I’m also fascinated by China’s naval development and would like to be able to read military publications in Chinese.

This is footage taken at the Kresen Kernow Archives, I selected the photographs with the most relevance and filmed some of them, I also rephotographed some to take with me when talking to some of the locals. I also looked at a petition which is calling for new laws on trawlers in 1906. showing that many of the things said about trawlers today were being said back then.
I think it will be interesting to compare these archival photographs to the village today, it will allow the audience to see the natural progression from then to now and how some small things have changed but for the most part the methods are the same. this idea stems from the practice of rephotography, the process of re capturing a scene later on, I didn’t want to have side by side comparisons as i felt it would feel too static and a comparison when working in moving images rather than still ones is able to capture movement and life so I feel it looses some effect when working with a still and a moving image.

The 1906 Petition:
Tumblr media
Transcript of key parts of the petition:
To the Cornwall sea fisheries district committee of the Cornwall county council
The petition presented in the month of October 1906 of the undersigned fishermen residing in the villages of cadgwith, coverack, port hallow and porthoustock and pursuing their occupation in the seas contingent thereto—
Sheweth as follows:
 - 1. Your petitioners desire their livelihood principally from crab and lobster fishing, an industry which has provided a livelihood for the inhabitants of the above named villages for several generations.
 - 2. Your petitioners believe that the methods adopted by them for catching crabs and lobsters are precisely similar to those adopted by their predecessors except in the matter of securing bait with which to bait their pots.
 - 3. Formerly it was possible to obtain on spillers and other simple lines placed in the sandy bays in the neighbourhood of the above named villages a sufficient quantity of bait for all the pots but occasionally it was found necessary to work one net per boat to secure the necessary bait.
 - 4. There are about 41 boats in such villages engaged in the crabbing industry.
 - 5. As a general rule each crabbing boat is worked by two men who jointly and equally provide the gear and equally divide the proceeds arising from the sale of crabs and lobsters caught. In some cases a man works singlehanded, in others three men work one boat in co-partnership. On average each boat works 30 pots. These pots are hauled and re-baited every day (except on Sundays) where weather permits.
 - 6. In more recent years and more particularly in the last 4 or 5 years, there has been a marked falling off in the supply of bait and this falling off has been contemporaneous with and in the opinion of your petitioners is the direct result of the operation of sailing trawlers in the sandy bays between the lizard and Falmouth and you petitioners are now compelled in order to obtain a sufficient supply of bait for their pots to work several nets which are placed in suitable positions in such sandy bays and as a rule within half a mile of the shores.
 - 8. It cannot be denied that large quantities of immature turbot, brills, soles, plaice and skate or rays are taken up in the trawlers from the sandy bays which are known to be the nurseries of young and immature fish and being unmarketable are thrown back into the sea dead or in dying condition and large numbers of immature fish, though not taken on board the trawlers are being destroyed by being rolled up in and choked by the the sand whilst passing  through the meshes of the trawls.
11. Your petitioners are apprehensive that if trawling operations are allowed to proceed within the sandy bays around the coast of Cornwall not only with the operations of those engaged in the crabbing industry be put an end to by the inability to sustain the  loss and damage to their nets and other gear and to carry it on for the want of the necessary bait but also the food supply of the country will be substantially curtailed by the destruction of the vast quantities of immature fish.

Fish wholesaler Swansea Fish sells direct to shoppers in response to growing demand
Tumblr media
Image: Screenshot of copperbayseafood.co.uk
A Welsh fish wholesaler that supplies leading UK restaurants has launched its first direct-to-consumer online shop in response to high lockdown demand from the public.
Wholesaler Swansea Fish is now selling a range of fresh fish and seafood online for the first time. The website, trading as Copper Bay Seafood, was developed after the business started to take its first direct orders from customers during Covid-19 lockdown – when the restaurants that it normally serves were forced to close temporarily.
The business counts Michelin-starred and award-winning restaurants among the clientele that it has served over the first 30 years of its operations. During lockdown it started to explore selling straight to the consumer for the first time. At first it took orders over the phone, but now it has launched its own website to serve UK shoppers.
Paul and Debora Rees, co-founders of Copper Bay Seafood, say: “We are really excited to be expanding our seafood business online, helping us to reach many more people across the country.
“After being in the fish industry for over 30 years, the recent effects of Covid-19 have allowed us to trial and test things we never could have before. We are looking forward to giving people the Michelin star experience at home that they have no doubt missed out on during lockdown.”
The business promises to deliver ethically and sustainably sourced seafood straight to customers’ doors in perfect condition. Fresh fish and shellfish are both available, from swordfish steaks and monkfish loin to frozen cooked lobster and Welsh mussels. Items can be bought individually or in boxes ranging from a luxury celebration box to a family fish box. There’s a minimum online order of £50, with delivery free for those spending more than £100. Website content includes recipes and ideas on how to serve up fish – including a guide to filleting a turbot.

Coronavirus threatens to paralyze Spanish fishing | Economy
“In my family we have been fishermen since 1895, I am the fourth generation and my daughter the fifth. We have survived two world wars and one civil war and we have never encountered such a situation. In war they went out to fish ”, laments Pere Gotanegra. He is manager of Fishermen of Roses, a company from Girona. He is afraid of having to close in two months if SMEs do not receive some kind of help from administrations. “Demoralization on the quay is general,” says Antoni Abad, Roses' patron saint and president of the National Federation of Fishermen's Associations of Catalonia.
Five fishing boats from Almería were considering yesterday the same as a good part of the Spanish companies: to present a file of temporary employment regulation (ERTE). This is further proof that no economic sector has guarantees of remaining unscathed in the face of the coronavirus crisis. For fishing, it is already on two sides: the impossibility of guaranteeing the necessary measures to prevent the spread of Covid-19 on ships and the drop in the prices of some fish in fish markets throughout Spain due to the forced closure restaurants and hotels. More than 50,000 Spanish fishermen are affected.
“Today they told me that the red shrimp, which is usually paid in Santa Pola at 100 euros per kilo, was selling for 10,” explains Basilio Otero, president of the Spanish Federation of Fishermen's Guilds. The red shrimp has just come out of one of the ecological closures that are decreed to ensure its sustainability, so the problem does not come from the supply side. After the collapse of the prices of this crustacean is the collapse of demand, like that of the rest of products considered high-end: turbot, sea bass, hake of more than three kilos … But it also affects other not so precious: the rooster, smaller hake or monkfish. In the fish market of Caleta de Vélez (Málaga) this morning there were only five buyers out of the 50 who used to go daily.
The shipowners are considering whether, under these conditions, it pays to go out to work. Many return to port thinking about how much money they will have lost with the day because the fixed costs almost exceed those obtained on the return. Although the problems affect according to what is the fishing gear used by each of the 9,000 fishing boats that fish in Spain.
Those who use encirclement these days are shaken by another type of problem, the safety of their crew. They have to live in a small space for up to fifteen people and it is difficult to comply with the conditions imposed by the health authorities to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. Gloves can be used, but it is difficult to wear masks in the open sea. And the fear of contagion has caused many fishermen to not want to take the risk. They have ten such boats in the port of Barcelona and last night only three left, in a measure that has been repeated along the entire Catalan coast.
The president of Cepesca, Javier Garat, explains that in the Mediterranean some ports have decided not to continue the activity (such as that of Garruchas, Carboneras (Almería) and that of Puerto de Santa María (Cádiz) and, in others, the ships that depart They want. “We need aid to be put in place,” he complains. He has been talking to the General Fisheries Secretariat for days to find a solution, which they seem to have found. Although the approval of the European Commission is lacking. more than 1,000 million euros from the Maritime and Fisheries Fund so that an unemployment such as that suffered by part of the Spanish fishing fleet can be subsidized. From this item, the aid that fishermen receive when they are forced to paralyze some type of fishing due to ecological closures. “We want to have the same conditions as, for example, set forth in the decree approved yesterday by the Government for the ERTE” for a situation of force majeure co mo is the coronavirus.

The crucial to offering a rewarding meal is actually to make certain that the food selection satisfies all Highly recommended Web-site attendee's requirements as well as inclinations. Unlike bbqs and also household homecomings, supper celebrations are actually suggested to be smaller sized close affairs; therefore your strategies must promote dynamic, but pleasant, discussion. The supper pertained to S$ 769.75 for the two of us. The alcoholic drinks in the expense was actually all consumed by her. Commonly a dinner range or hostess thinks that the a lot more complex the menu, the extra luxurious the event, the more sophisticated the dining table environment... the a lot more she or he will thrill the guests! The double evening out - dinner and also theater or dinner and dancing didn't take place typically and hardly ever previous March 1st when the hrs actually booted into complete gear. Despite just how nice your supper is actually, if you are worn out and also stressed out when you serve this, you will not enjoy that! Your wife will definitely be actually very blown away due to the attempt you have taken to cook her dinner and provide her a relaxing and also splendid experience. The dinner table stands on The Heritage Floor, composed from more than 2,000 white luster-glazed triangular-shaped tiles, each carved in gold manuscripts with the label of among 999 females which have created a mark on past history. Obviously you carry out not have to choose a traditional X-mas dinner for your Christmas time German cuisine there are actually lots of fantastic German recipes that could be delighted in if you wish to take a German concept to your Christmas time dining table. There are specific foods loved ones look at a considerable amount of. For our company, this is actually Kraft Supper and also Kraft Cheese Songs. Still, not every visitor thinks they came away coming from a Bernanke supper along with a special idea. This will certainly produce the best ambience you wish to achieve, and will definitely show how a lot you took the time and effort for this supper. Total foods offer such preferences as packed peppers and also potato crusted pollock along with mac and cheese, while the a los angeles carte dinner shipment choices feature choices varying coming from beef sirloin along with morel dressing to chick marsala. Dinner blew up gaily, as well as, although my guardian seemed to follow rather than originate targets, I recognized that he dragged the weakest component of our predispositions out of our company. For myself, I found that I was actually showing my inclination to lush cost, and also to purchase from Herbert, as well as to possess my terrific leads, prior to I rather knew that I had opened my lips. Including Delicious chocolate Chip Pancakes or Chocolate Scones to morning meal, Chocolate Mole Chicken BLT at lunch time, as well as Mole Pesto Shrimp for supper will allow you to possess Delicious chocolate at Every Dish. A house cooked dinner is actually constantly a much cheaper choice to a food at a bistro, and also this will be actually even more exclusive, since you prepared that for her. Selecting appropriate rewards can easily be an excellent technique to sustain your style if you are actually intending a charity event or party supper giveaway. And for those that might wonder.indeed that will be a supper you would certainly have prepared on your own and certainly not the traitor.

Competition between sushi restaurants in the uk
17 JUNE 2016 • 11:43AM
International Sushi Day (18th June) calls for more than a lunchtime dash to Itsu. For the most sensational sashimi and marvellous maki this side of Tokyo, head to one of these restaurants and raise a glass of sake…
Dinings
The decadent offerings at this Izakaya-style Marylebone townhouse include yellowtail sashimi topped with British caviar, and Wagyu beef nigiri with foie gras. Nobu alumni Masaki Sugisaki and Keiji Fuku are at the helm, offering a menu of ‘Japanese tapas’ with modern European influences.

Moshimo
Standout design and a commitment to sourcing sustainable fish have won Brighton’s Moshimo a legion of fansmen/thinking-man/why-are-most-internet-trolls-male/. The modernist building is meant to resemble a floating lantern floating, with shoji screen-inspired walls that slide open onto the square in summer. Its Japanese vegetables and herbs are grown a tiny farm outside of Lewes, appearing in highly original sushi dishes such as tuna salad with red radish and watercress, and tofu, mizuna, sun dried tomato, red onion and cucumber. It also runs sake tastings and sushi-making workshops.

Kulu-Kulu
This Soho spot isn’t hot on décor or fancy fusion menus; what matters here are the beautifully simple morsels coming round on the kaiten sushi (conveyor belt), while you watch the deft knife-work of the chefs in the centre. As well as the fresh fish offerings, make sure you snatch the miso aubergine when it comes your way, and place an order for the soft shell crab roll. You can eat like a king for £15, and they throw in unlimited green tea refills.

Etiquette for making and eating sushi01:01Roka, London
A top choice for special occasions, Roka’s tasting menu boasts some of the most indulgent sashimi in town: yellowtail tuna with yuzu-truffle dressing and rock lobster with mandarin kosho. It goes beyond sushi to offer exemplary contemporary robatayaki cuisine, crafting signature dishes such as gindara to gazi no gyoza (black cod, crab and crayfish dumplings) on a central robata grill. At the Charlotte Street flagship, glass walls are perfect for people-watching; other Roka branches are to found in Mayfair, Canary Wharf and Aldwych.

Kanpai Sushi
The name means ‘Bottoms up!’ in Japanese, and from a seat by the open kitchen or at Kanpai’s sushi counter you can toast the chefs with a glass of plum wine. The interior is all polished beech and pendant lighting, while the menu focuses on three pillars: sushi, sake and tempura. Dishes such as grilled scallop nigiri and tuna sashimi have earned it a string of awards, from the Michelin Guide to The Scottish Restaurant Awards.

How to make maki00:58Atari-Ya

For the freshest fish, it makes sense to go straight to the source. Well, Atariya supplies seafood and other Japanese ingredients to restaurants all over the capital, as well as running its own chain of no-nonsense sushi bars. The vast selection includes lesser-known delicacies like uni (sea urchin), Botan Ebi (spot prawn), engawa (turbot fin) and natto (fermented soy beans), often prettily plated on slate or wooden boards.
Atari-Ya has eat-in branches in Ealing Common, Swiss Cottage and Hendon, plus a James Street take-away
Wazen
Newcomer Wazen has made waves thanks to its polished décor, knowledgeable staff (head chef Toshimasa Tanahashi hails from the Arts Club’s Kyubi) and authentic, beautifully presented cuisine. Located on a quiet street in Kings Cross, it’s billed as a neighbourhood Japanese restaurant and highly prizes Omotenashi, which roughly translates as "the spirit of Japanese hospitality". Even the loos are of the high-tech Tokyo variety. Generous sushi and sashimi platters are perennially popular, and two strengths of soy sauce are served to complement different dishes.

Sushi at Maze, Gordon Ramsay

Gohei Kishi – alumnus of Michelin-starred Tokyo restaurant Kappou Nakajima – is on the other side of the sushi counter here. He dreams up modern twists and unusual flavour pairings: kingfish with pecan nut and dashi vinaigrette (the base to miso soup) and tuna maki with jalapeño miso are on the menu. A superb cocktail list completes the experience.
