Half YF-12 and half SR-71: the story of âThe Bastard,â the only SR-71C ever built
By Dario Leone
May 1 2018
SR-71C S/N 61-7981 was nicknamed âThe Bastardâ since it was a hybrid comprised of the rear fuselage of the first YF-12A and a functional engineering mockup of an SR-71A forward fuselage built for static testing
Taken at Hill Air Force Base (AFB) in June 2016, the interesting clip in this post shows SR-71C, âThe Bastardâ S/N 61-7981, that was the only C model Blackbird ever built and was the last SR-71 to be manufactured. It was nicknamed âThe Bastardâ since it was a hybrid comprised of the rear fuselage of the first YF-12A (S/N 60-6934) and a functional engineering mockup of an SR-71A forward fuselage built for static testing.
The plane was built to replace the second of the two B model trainers after it crashed on Jan. 11, 1968. The C model made its first flight on Mar. 14, 1969 from the Lockheed plant at Palmdale, California, with Blackbird Chief Project Pilot Robert J. Gilliland at the controls and Lockheed test pilot Steve Belgeau as Reconnaissance Systems Officer. After flight testing it was delivered to the 9th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing at Beale AFB, California, on Sep. 3, 1970.
The aircraft made its last flight on Apr. 11, 1976 and was removed from flying status on Jun. 24, 1976 with only 556.4 flight hours, not including the 180.9 hours accumulated on the aircraft as YF-12A S/N 60-6934. It was then processed for long-term storage at the Lockheed plant in Palmdale, California.

Through the intervention of Utah Senator Orrin G. Hatch, Hill Aerospace Museum was assigned the aircraft by the Air Force in April 1990 and immediately began planning its relocation from Beale AFB to Hill AFB.
Representatives from the museum, the Air Force Heritage Foundation of Utah, the 67th Aerial Port Squadron, and the 405th Combat Logistics Support Squadron (CLSS) traveled to California in July 1990 to determine the best way to disassemble, package, and transport the aircraft.
Then a sixteen-member team from the 405th CLSS went to California in August 1990 and broke the aircraft down into three major pieces and assorted smaller components, including a J58 engine and start cart, palletizing them all for transport on a C-5 Galaxy cargo aircraft. However, when the disassembly operation was completed no cargo aircraft was immediately available to transport the pieces back to the base. Everything would have to wait.
In the Spring of 1991 representatives from the 67th Aerial Port Squadron and the 405th CLSS traveled twice to Beale AFB via two large, flat-bed trucks to retrieve most of the palletized components, leaving only the largest pieces that would require transport by cargo aircraft. In August 1991, one year after the disassembly had begun, air transport was finally arranged via a C-5 from Travis AFB.
Once all the pieces were finally on base, the aircraft components were gathered together in a large hangar belonging to the 405th CLSS for reassembly and restoration. Volunteers, Air Force Reservists, and many active-duty personnel were involved in the intricate two-month process of piecing the aircraft back together. On Oct. 16, 1991 the completed aircraft was towed to the museum and placed on display.

A Vmin throwback - 2018
So last year I made a post called âA Vmin throwback - 2017â and naturally there has been a ton of Vmin moments in 2018 as well. Despite what people might remember, 2018 has been a truly great year for Vmin. We have gotten to witness a lot of really intimate interactions and the moments that we have gotten have actually started to make more people ship Vmin. And Iâm sorry that this post is so late, but there were just too many moments. Basically we can summarize it to that we have gotten a lot of quality content for Vmin this year.
Here is a rather huge collection of some of the wonderful Vmin moments we got in 2018! Letâs start! More under the cut!
Itâs been a truly blessed year and I dare say weâve been walking around in a rather purple-tinted world since the very start!
Vmin havenât been all that loud on twitter in 2018, but they did start of with a bang. Not only are they together, telling us they love us and giving us some purple hearts, but Jimin is also wearing (and specifically showing off) his birthday present that he got from Taehyung in 2016. Itâs cute.
BTS_twt Twitter Update 180111 I love you!!!!! #đâșïžâșïžÂ
youtube
Video Translation: Tae: Everyone, everyone happy new year Jimin: Thank you~ *finger hearts* Tae: I love you, I love you~
I also want to include Taehyungâs birthday bomb, though it wasnât in 2018, it was released in January and thus didnât make it into my post last year. And itâs too cute to leave out.
Also, award season in January had plenty of more Vmin moments.
Sadly I canât include everything because this year has had so much Vmin. But Iâll keep going with the award shows from the rest of 2018, and we can tell that awards are a place where Vmin truly shines, because they just canât stay away from each other.
Exhibit A, watch Vmin during the end of SMA where they keep close and circle each other.
Remember at the BBMAs where they sat together, flipped water bottles and joked around in front on the whole world?
Like really, we can expect great things from Awards shows, but this year was something extra. Even at a distance they keep turning towards each other.
We got one of the best Vmin hugs ever, and that is saying a lot, because Vmin has been hugging so much this year.
Award shows really seem more like date nights.
They can be rather shameless with the flirting too. (And the roleplaying.)
I mean, their display on Gayo Awards this year was something else.
I could include a million other moments, but I have to move on.
You can just look at basically any award show and youâll see Vmin paying more attention to each other than anything else.
Actually performance shows also seem to be a flirting ground for Vmin. Iâm sure youâve seen the clips from the SBS Super concert in Taipei? Where Vmin couldnât help but to expose each otherâs chests.
So, next up we have so many good moments from Run episodes that I donât know how to choose. We got everything from butt slaps to cuddling, to whining and roleplaying or just straight out being boyfriends. Letâs just say there was a lot of playful moments.
Of course we got the confirmation that BTS themselves also see Vmin as soulmates.
If you havenât figured it out yet, Vmin wants to be close and together every chance they get.
And as usual Taehyung talked about something he did with Jimin, completely forgetting that poor Jin was there as well. He is not able to not talk about Jimin.
You also of course got plenty of supportive moments. Jimin is there for Taehyung when he is scared, doing his best to encourage him and compliments him. And again, this has been a year of hugs.
Some episodes were so filled with Vmin I canât even decide which moments to gush about. Just take the barista episode, where Jimin kept complimenting Tae, calling him handsome, telling him not to tremble and that he is doing great.
Just sitting together and being in their own world.
And donât get me started on the pottery episode, where Jimin just looks so damn cute as he gets to make something for Tae.
âDonât worry my loveâ Jimin makes Tae a rose and a heart and are generally just really sweet towards Tae.
Like really⊠Vmin on Run is just the best honestly. Even if they are supposed to work against each other they somehow end up, well⊠clingy.
They manage to hug every opportunity they get.
Any excuse to touch reallyâŠ
Like, they just canât help themselves even if they are on opposite teams.
At this point run episodes are basically just a collection of Vmin adoring each other and being domestic.
There are sooooo many great moments. Like for real, Iâm not sure Iâll be able to do a post like this next year, I will need one just for Run episodes. ^^ââ
We have also seen them bicker a lot, so itâs easy to tell how comfortable and natural their relationship is. Like in the badminton/football episodes where Jimin got annoyed with Tae several times⊠Or when he wanted to draw on Taeâs shirt but didnât get to and ended up whining. I think you get it... Basically a lot of pouting Jimin.
Iâm gonna have to move on from Run, but there are two moments from this year that I would consider the absolute highlights of Vmin on Run. One is Taehyungâs poem, and the fact that he thinks Jimin is the coolest performer heâs ever seen. (We have know this forever *gasp gasp*)
And the best Vmin Run episode award goes to.... Episode 50!Â
The episode in which Vmin realized they can hold hands and they havenât let each other go since. Scared Jimin was so cute, and he needed his Tae beside him for comfort. Like he specifically asked for it.
Poor little mochi. But now I really have to leave Run. Because there or plenty of other cute vmin moments to look at.
Just a few examples from the 4th muster, enough to make you swoon.
Not to mention this moment that will go down in Vmin history, featuring gay panic Jimin.
Puma also came back to remind us to ship Vmin.
We got the possibly cutest Vmin date ever. Itâs just full of sweet, domestic and cuddly Vmin.
Then I have to talk about their concerts, where Vmin has made Love Myself their anthem.
youtube
The tour really was filled with Vmin moments.
I honestly canât believe I saw this moment live.
They just gave us a million cute moments to gush about.
And like I said... This year has been filled with hugs!
They purple each other so much!
I donât know about you, but 2018 should be the year where people stopped doubting how much Vmin love each other.Â
Also JK ships them, so you should too! Look at him making them hold hands.
Promo-season is always good to Vmin shippers as well.
Speaking of performances we canât forget Fake Love being generous to Vmin shippers.
Like I could pick this moment from basically any performance, so I have to hold back.
IDOL also provided us with Vmin.
Even spelling it out for us, that Vmin means love!
Of course we canât skip over Singularity, which Jimin made sure to hype! (And which is also a dark reflection to Serendipity)
(BONUS: JIMIN LOVES TAEâS SMILE)
And before we move on to the two really big Vmin source of this year (I think you can guess which ones), I just have a few moments I simply canât skip.
Jimin wanted a song, so Taehyung said he would give him one.
Besides this moment, as well as 4 oâclock, we also got Tae mention another song that he wrote. A Christmas song he wanted to sing with Jimin, but got stopped because the lyrics apparently were too romantic for two men to sing.
Moving on...
Saipan needs a special mention too.
No year is a real Vmin year without a proper butt slap.
Or you know...
SeveralâŠ
And we canât forget that we got the first Vmin (kinda) vlive in a long time. Showing an extremely domestic couple and their dog.
They of course talked plenty of each other in other vlives as well.
And there are of course behind the scenes stories as well, showing how even staff react to Vminâs closeness.
But really, I have to move on... Because both Burn the stage and Bon Voyage season 3 happened this year, and I donât think I have to tell you how these two shows truly let us see just how much Vmin mean to each other.
We got plenty of cute moments (even though we never got to see the museum date in NY).
But of course we also got yet another glimpse at Taehyungâs and Jiminâs relationship and how much they support each other.
Jimin has been a huge support to Taehyung, and itâs just so heart warming to even get a small piece of something so private revealed to us.
Jimin really is Taehyungâs strength and support. But we also know that Tae is the same to Jimin.
youtube
Basically in Burn the stage we saw a few of the moments that Vmin has briefly mentioned before when saying they need each other and lean on each other. I feel humbled to be allowed to see these moments.
And then we also got Bon Voyage. Where we once again got to see Vmin missing each other, despite only being apart for a few days.
Jimin couldnât stop talking about Tae, and also seemed to talk to Tae while he wasnât there, and sending him videos and photos.
And as he showed up seemed unable to stay away, holding his hand every chance he got.
I canât possibly include all the moments from Bon Voyage, because as soon as Tae arrived (and even before) it was just so many lovely moments between them.Â
...Wanting to share a room, Tae taking off Jiminâs face mask, going on two dates, sharing food, Tae buying needle and thread for Jimin, just Jimin wanting to show Tae the things he had already seen because not sharing them with Taehyung was not an option. Tae wishing upon Jimin in stead of a star. The list goes on...
Third wheeling the other members as usual.
Jimin being fond and supporting as Tae did busking and the two of them just enjoying their time together.
Then there was the moment that honestly felt a bit too honest and intruding. The fact that the staff member ran directly to Jimin as soon as they realized Tae was crying, and Jiminâs soft comforting and drying Taeâs tears.
This moment just shows how close they are, and how important they are to each other. And again, with Vmin it always seem like they want to share everything. Jimin kept talking about things he had seen and done, and wanted to do them again with Taehyung. He also expressed that he wants to travel somewhere alone with Taehyung outside of work and that Tae being the combo of JKâs and Namjoonâs personalities, is the perfect fit for him.
The other members even seemed to know Vmin would need some extra time alone, and let them team up two times in a row. We can see several examples of the people closest to them knowing how much they need each other.
Basically all of Bon Voyage in Malta was just filled with Vminâs love for each other. And there is no way I can fill all that love into one post. But I hope you enjoyed this regardless. I think we can all agree that Vminâs bond is truly special, and that they will surely keep going for a long time (They did promise in front of that scenery after all).Â
And lastly, there is of course Taeâs birthday. And Jimin even congratulated him twice, also thanking ARMY for celebrating him.
Happy birthday to our Taehyung Youâve worked hard this year too I wanted to post a derp photo but If I post it kekekeke you might not want to see me ever again kekekekeke Hyung loves you a lot â€ïžđ #JIMIN #TaeTaeHappyBday
Trans cr; Denise @ bts-trans
This year we have a new record for Vmin hugging, holding hands a Vmin saying they love each other. (#TaehyungILoveYou). In conclusion, Vminâs love is still going strong and no one can deny that.
Thanks for reading! There were so many moments I had to cut out, and it took a whole month extra to make, but I hope you enjoyed this post.Â
Let us all look forward to a great year of the two pigs in 2019!

Composed Damian McKenzie 'a little bit guilty of underplaying'
11:25pm, 18 September 2021 After a hectic performance in the final half-hour against Argentina last weekend, Damian McKenzie reined in his game at No 10 this week and delivered a calm display for the All Blacks in just his second start in the key playmaker role.ADVERTISEMENTNew Zealand had already built a 29-0 when McKenzie was injected off the bench in the 50th minute as a replacement for Beauden Barrett last Sunday.Despite still dominating possession and territory, the All Blacksâ play became somewhat helter-skelter and unpolished once the substitutes joined the fray, with the team only recording a further 10 points over the final thirty minutes of action.
Ian Foster discusses the All Blacksâ depth. While McKenzie certainly wasnât the only man to perhaps overplay his hand, the five-eighth probably needed to calm his troops as the key game controller and words would have undoubtedly been had following the game.Ahead of the rematch with the Pumas, coach Ian Foster was confident that McKenzie â named to start at No 10 for the All Blacks for the first time since 2018 â could control the proceedings as needed, despite his relatively limited experience in the jersey.âHeâs trained a lot there. He has filled in at times. Heâs clearly started there before in a pretty big test match and did that pretty well,â Foster said. âHe played 35 minutes last week against Argentina and heâs got a clear understanding of his role in the Rugby Championship.âWeâve clearly only got two guys who play 10 in terms of a specialist-type area, with Richie not here, and I actually think itâs a common-sense selection in terms of managing Beaudy for the next couple of weeks. But also itâs a vote of confidence that we think heâs really progressing in that position.âADVERTISEMENTâCircumstances have demanded we give him a run at 10,â Foster added. âAnd heâs played a number of Super Rugby games there, heâs trained a lot for us, heâs filled in for us, heâs started for us so I donât think itâs that big a deal really.âMcKenzie himself acknowledged ahead of the game that heâd be performing a different role this weekend.âItâs completely different,â he said. âEveryone is ready to roar into it in the first 20 minutes, and later in the game play starts to open up a bit more. I tend to enjoy that style of game when it opens up and everyone tires a bit.âIt will be different this week starting. Itâs about trying to break the opposition down and playing our game. Iâm excited about the challenge.âADVERTISEMENTIan Foster is pleased with the All Blacks' depth â but he's not getting carried away. #AllBlacks #ARGvNZLhttps://t.co/ZKvExBoCNTâ RugbyPass (@RugbyPass) September 19, 2021Certainly, McKenzie was a considerably more composed figure in last nightâs match compared to a week prior.Operating in tandem with Jordie Barrett at fullback, McKenzie faded into the background as opposed to stealing the limelight, and laid the ball out on a platter for his backline runners. On one occasion in the first half, he dinked the ball over the top of the onrushing Argentinian defence, almost creating a try for the men in black, then delivered a pinpoint pass for a rushing All Blacks attacker moments later to hit another gaping hole.He was also confident on defence and nabbed two turnovers for his side.Following the match, Foster was pleased with his No 10âs performance â though felt that McKenzie perhaps went into his shell somewhat.âI liked his composure tonight, I thought he dealt with the challenge really, really well,â said Foster. âSecond start in the All Blacks but heâs experienced at 10.âIf anything, he was probably a little bit guilty of underplaying his hand, like he had more to offer. So I was quite excited about his progress.âWith Richie Moâunga returning to test duty ahead of the trip to Europe, and Beauden Barrett likely to wear No 10 for the coming matches with the Springboks, McKenzieâs time at first receiver could be done and dusted for the year, but Foster will be content that he has a ready-made option to call upon if needed.

Forbes made a rating of Fab 40, in which he rated the most expensive brands in the world of sports - from manufacturers of training suits to football clubs.
Brands, like the athletes who advertise them, can triumphantly return - or quickly bother the public. The brand value of a sports team is influenced by the actions of managers and players. Sporting events may or may not be popular. All this is reflected in our assessment of brands, writes Forbes. A prime example: six years ago, Puma's profit fell while its rivals Nike and Adidas reported large revenues. Puma has devised an incredible comeback plan including collaboration with singer Rihanna and sprinter Usain Bolt. Puma shares rose 74% over the past year, while Adidas shares were up 46% and Nike were up 25%. Impressive? The Puma price / earnings ratio is 46, and against its background, Nike (35) and Adidas (30) look cheap. This year, Puma first entered the Fab 40 ranking and ranks sixth in the Companies category. Her brand - that is, only one name - is estimated at $ 4 billion. Back side? Take a look at Under Armor, whose brand is worth $ 3.5 billion - 36% less than three years ago. Under Armor is losing market share to brands like Puma and New Balance. According to CNBC, the company is growing concern that consumers perceive Under Armor exclusively as a brand of âgym wearâ that sells sweatshirts and shorts. Since late July, the company's shares fell from $ 24 to $ 18. In addition to Puma, this year the newcomer to the Fab 40 rating was Gatorade (the manufacturer accounts for 77% of the sports drinks market, and we decided that it can be considered a sports brand). In addition, the Kentucky derby (last place in the Fab 40 in 2013), Conor McGregor and the Los Angeles Dodgers (Fab 40 participants in 2016) returned to the ranking. MLBAM (sold the BamTech brand to Walt Disney), NESN (lost in value to Gatorade and Puma), Usain Bolt (retired) and Manchester United (replaced by New England Patriots and Barcelona clubs) left the list.
Companies
1. Nike, $ 36.8 billion Over the past two years, Nike stocks outperformed Adidas stocks by more than two to one and Under Armor stocks by more than four to one. 2. ESPN, $ 13.1 billion ESPN's operating income exceeds $ 3 billion with monthly membership fees of $ 8 â more than any other sports network. 3. Adidas, $ 11.2 billion In April, BeyoncĂ© and Adidas announced a joint project, in which the artist will develop branded clothing and shoes for the brand. 4. Gatorade, $ 6.7 billion Gatorade holds 77% of the US sports beverage market, while Poweradeâs closest competitor is only 15%. 5. Sky Sports, $ 4.4 billion In 2018-2019, the audience of the Sky Sports Premier League television channel in the UK grew by 12%. 6. Puma, $ 4 billion In the first nine months of 2019, Puma shares went up 60% to $ 79. 7. Under Armor, $ 3.5 billion Over the past two years, Under Armor operating income (revenue excluding interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization) has fallen by 72% to $ 157 million. 8. UFC, $ 2.4 billion Earlier this year, the UFC and Disney signed a seven-year contract, under which the UFC receives a commission from paid broadcasts on ESPN +. 9. YES, $ 1.5 billion In September, a consortium of investors led by the owner of the New York Yankees bought YES Network from Disney for $ 3.47 billion. 10. Reebok, $ 800 million Reebok sales in 2018 fell by 3%, but the company nevertheless became profitable again.
Sport events
1. Super Bowl, $ 780 million According to Kantar Media, CBS received $ 382 million in advertising revenue during the last Super Bowl. A year earlier, NBC earned $ 408 million on the decisive game. 2. Summer Olympics, $ 375 million NBC raised $ 1.2 billion in sales of advertising in America during the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games - slightly less than at the previous Summer Games in London. 3. Final round of the basketball tournament of the first division of the NCAA among men, $ 300 million According to Kantar Media, TV advertising revenue during the March Madness ranged from $ 1.3 billion to $ 1.6 billion. 4. World Cup, $ 282 million About 2.49 million people watched at least 30 minutes of broadcasts of the 2018 World Cup in Russia - an increase of 27.7% compared to the previous World Cup in Brazil. 5. National College Football Championship, $ 255 million In 2014, ESPN began annually paying $ 470 million for the right to display the Playoffs among colleges under the terms of a contract that is valid until 2025. 6. WrestleMania, $ 245 million This year, WrestleMania earned $ 16.9 million at Metlife Stadium: this result is second only to $ 17.3 million in revenue at WrestleMania three years ago. 7. UEFA Champions League, $ 168 million Revenue from the sale of broadcast rights and sponsorship contracts in the Champions League and Europa League is expected to average $ 3.52 billion for one season from 2018 to 2021. 8. Kentucky Derby, $ 155 million In 2018, Churchill Downs Hippodrome was renovated at a cost of $ 37 million, as a result of which more than 1800 seats in 32 new boxes and a tribune on the third floor were added. 9. Winter Olympics, $ 150 million The games of 2018 became the largest Olympic Winter Games on hype on social networks - official materials attracted 300 million users, and the video gained more than 1.6 billion views. 10. World Series of Major League Baseball, $ 122 million The average cost of showing a 30-second commercial during the 2018 World Series match between the Boston Red Sox and the Los Angeles Dodgers was about $ 500,000 - almost the same as in Fall Classic a year earlier.
Athletes
Zhe Ji / Getty Images
1. Roger Federer, $ 62 million Federerâs revenue of $ 86 million off the court thanks to partners like Credit Suisse, Mercedes-Benz and Rolex is nearly 60% more than any other athleteâs total earnings. 2. Tiger Woods, $ 33 million Since the beginning of his professional career in 1996, Woods has received $ 1.4 billion from sponsors. 3. Cristiano Ronaldo, $ 29 million 24 hours after the start of sales of Ronaldo's branded T-shirt with the Juventus logo, 520,000 copies worth more than $ 60 million were sold. 4. LeBron James, $ 28 million In 2018, James teamed up with Cindy Crawford, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Lindsey Vonn to launch Ladder, a nutritional supplement manufacturer. 5. Lionel Messi, $ 20 million Messi signed a lifetime contract with Adidas, under which he allegedly receives more than $ 12 million annually. 6. Stephen Curry, $ 17 million In 2017, Curry founded the new company SC30 to manage his investments, brand contracts and charity projects. 7. RTX Behind the Scenes, Post-Con Final Thoughts, and Shout Outs (w/pics)
Being my first cosplay, especially in armor, I didnât know what I was expecting. I dropped my armor off at @actualagentcarolinaâs hotel room (and met Kiki and...I think I met aromanticyork? I donât know, I felt awkward being there) so she can put the velcro on my bicycle pants I was using as the under armor.
The velcro on the waist kept popping off if I were to bend forward or to the side. Cuz Iâm fat. I mean, Iâm Grif, fat is a given, but the velcro just kept popping off regardless. Since Day 1 of RTX, I began to work on counter measures to prevent this from happening again; stay tuned.
Carolina taught me the wonders of Gorilla glue. Besides the boots, all the pieces there required gorilla glue; there are two straps on the side of the codpiece that lost their velcro, I had to super glue them back on. The left thigh piece (right most) lost the velcro in the inner band. There are two pieces, and while I glued the first piece, by Day 2 of RTX, the second piece was removed, so I had to glue that shit too. Finally, because of my clumsy feet, I broke the back panel of the right calf piece (interchangable, but regardless, it was my right leg at the time).
Also finally fixed my battery pack. SOrta. I hope the gorilla glue on it holds; Carolina said ti should last, but I do have bad luck.
RTX Day 2, the Founding Fatherâs Panel
At this time, my cosplay was at itâs peak. Besides my codpiece, everything was staying on. And then people lined up to ask questions in the last half of the panel. Naturally, as someone who started with RT since Season 2 of RvB, I wanted to get up and ask questions. I was in the back-most row of chairs of the front-right section of the seats. But...
I couldnât get up! In order to even sit, I had to kind of âslouchâ into the chair, legs out. As such, I couldnât even stand! I missed the opportunity to get in line and just sat there, eating chips (I actually brought the chips mom and I bought the day before with me because I needed food to take my pain meds).
Same day, mom came back from Dallas. I asked if we can head to the nearest home depot to âcomplete my cosplayâ. I tried to get this cone shipped to my hotel via Amazon, but it wasnât gonna make it to RTX. This shit cost my $23, twice as much as I was gonna get from Amazon. Itâs also twice as big as the one Grif used in Season 8. But was it worth it?
You might have noticed that my right hand has a sort of cast. THe day before we left for Texas, I got into a biking accident on my way to work and injured my right hand; had to go to the hospital. Fast forward to RTX. I had to figure out how to keep this hand less busy while gathering all of my stuff. Needless to say, the cone made this....extremely difficult. But was it worth it?
Yes. Yes it was.
Last day of Con, last event for me.
I was so nervous, my legs started shaking. You can see my codpiece was falling apart along with my thigh pieces. BUt it took all I can to get this Protect-o-Cone to Geoff. But my god, I was near ready to collapse from the anxiety, the physical stress, my injury, and the heat. But I ask again, was it worth it?
Hell the fuck yeah.
By the way, I never thanked you, but someone in a Halo-related booth loved my cosplay so much, he gave me this. I havenât taken it out of the box yet, but it was a real treat to get something representing red team. He didnât know my cosplay was from Red vs Blue, so he kept calling me a SPARTAN. In fact, there are SO MANY better cosplayers than I! There was Carolina, Aromantic York, Tucker, Caboose, Maine, Washington and Tex who I am STILL LOOKING FOR, in full armor. Maybe itâs because it was the last day, so I was the only one in armor, or half armor, but I....I was at a loss for words. I donât think Iâll ever open the Puma, but it was a moment like this Iâm glad I came to RTX.
Day 2 of the con, around 9am
I apologize if you saw me. I was in partial armor, wearing I think only my shin pieces. As soon as I got to the back of the line, I dropped my stuff, my shorts, and immediately began putting on my armor. But as soon as I did, the line started moving. I cursed myself as I scrambled to get my stuff, thinking that this was the line to get into the Founding Fathers panel instead of into the convention, but I thank the two wonderful con goers who helped me pick up my stuff as I held everything in all hands, plus my laundry bag (which I should probably wash) by my teeth. I am so embarassed for this, but I was stupid and I had planned on changing in the bathrooms if there wasnât a line, but I heard it was the line to the FOunding Fathers, so I got concerned and decided to change right away.
To this Tex and Wash, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. You made this con experience memorable for me for reenacting (sort of) something I always wanted to do:
If you ever see this, please get in touch with me. A Tumblr post isnât enough to thank you guys. Iâve received some messages complimenting me and talking with me for a bit, and I want to do the same to you two. I looked like a massive dork walking up to you two and asking for your pics, but being in RTX and seeing so many RvB cosplays, I had the biggest nerd boner and couldnât contain.
To this lovely person, I was really happy to see a Simmons. Thank you for making my first day line experience fun. I geeked out a bit when I saw you, not gonna lie.
ANd to my teacher, and wonderful friend, and the one who set me on this path.
Weâre gonna tear up the con floor together, I promise. You, me, and all of our wonderful RTNY cosplaying friends. RTNY represent!
My only regret, that despite my enthusiasm, if I wasnât so exhuasted lugging all my stuff around with my phone in the bottom of my laundry bag 75% of the time, I could have taken a pic of all of your lovely cosplays. I saw many RWBY cosplays I absolutely loved. I was in line with Beacon teachers sans Glinda. I saw cosplayers with fully functional weapons (Rubyâs and Qrowâs, my nerd boner skyrocketed seeing that wonderful display of machinery). I wish I was more supportive and less tired. I deeply apologize, but do know I loved all of your creative cosplays.

Positive Pro Wrestling: CMLL Friday Super Viernes
Because sometimes I want to say nice things about pro wrestling
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m-hvQClBpro
Thatâs an official link to the show replay from CMLLâs youtube page.
Super Viernes is kind of the Monday Night Raw of CMLL, the big weekly show. Every match is 2/3 falls unless itâs a âRelampago/Lightningâ Match, then itâs one fall with a 10 minute time limit (clock displayed on the tron). To score falls in tag matches, one team has to beat both members of the other team. To score falls in trios matches, Captains Rules are in effect: each team has a captain, if you beat the captain, you auto-win the fall, otherwise you have to beat two wrestlers on a team. It is VERY different from Japanese wrestling, American wrestling, and even Lucha Underground, but I love the style, itâs my second favourite promotion in the world behind New Japan.
CMLL is the oldest surviving promotion in the world, and has working agreements with New Japan and Ring of Honor right now. Itâs a very conservative promotion, relying more on promos (I canât speak Spanish) and in-ring matches (even more PG than WWE, no hardcore matches, blood or gimmick matches) to tell the story than soap opera storylines. Masks and Hair are the most important things, with Titles coming in third. CMLL has a ton of championships, like 25 or 26 recognized titles (some are specific to buildings, some are secondary titles). The CMLL Trios titles are probably the most important, and historically the Middleweight or Welterweight Titles might be the most important, but really the man makes the title, there is no one âWorld Championâ (not even the CMLL Heavyweight Title is considered the most important). Itâs not important to keep track of them, theyâre only defended a few times per year anyways, and title-holders are mostly just holding the Championship so they can have a big feature match once in awhile. Title reigns can last a years in CMLL (the current longest reign is mini-wrestler Electrico with the Mexican National Lightweight Title at nearly 4 years) but usually a few of them change hands over the course of a year.
I usually skip the first few matches on CMLL shows, but Viernes has been putting on pretty good undercards the last little while.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m-hvQClBpro&t=1478s - 2/3 Falls Trios Match: Fuego, Pegasso and Esfinge vs the Casas Dynasty (Tiger and Puma) and Raziel. Badass flippy shit and moves
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m-hvQClBpro&t=3160s - 2/3 Falls Trios Match: Titan, Soberano Jr and Drone vs The New Dynamite Brothers (Sanson, Cuatrero and Forastero). The Dynamites are sneak becoming my favourite Trios unit in lucha.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m-hvQClBpro&t=4829s - Lightning Match, Stuka Jr vs Hechicero. I love Hechicero. Heâs so different from most other wrestlers. Heâs jacked and looks like a brawler or power wrestling, but heâs surprisingly technical and agile, has a few cool strikes (that rising knee in the corner!) and has a cool entrance where he does fire tricks and summons demons or whatever Evil Mexican Sorcerors do. I think heâs underrated.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m-hvQClBpro&t=5738s - 2/3 Falls Trios Match: Blue Panther, El Valiente and Diamante Azul vs Los Ingobernables (Rush and Pierroth) and Sam Adonis. Rush is my favourite CMLL guy so I watch whatever heâs in. Not a great match, but crowd reaction, man. Sam Adonis has recently started doing the Pro-Trump thing and heâs probably the most hated heel in the company right now (which is usually reserved for Rush and Pierroth). You can sort of see that he doesnât totally know how to handle it (witness Rush gesturing him to get on the announce booth and pose at the fans for maximum heel heat, because Rush loves being hated), Iâm hoping he embraces the hate but maybe he wants to live a few more years. Adonis and Blue Panther have a Hair vs Hair match incoming. I feel like Blue Panther is gonna win... but man, if Iâm booking, Sam Adonis wins and then you put him against a younger babyface in a mask vs hair match and print pesos (though with how crooked Mexico is, CMLL probably does that anyways)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m-hvQClBpro&t=6970s - 2/3 Falls Trios Match: Caristico/Mistico I, Mistico II and Niebla Roja vs Los Guerrreros Laguneros (Ultimo Guerrero and Gran Guerrero) and Mephisto. Always dig the Misticos teaming up. I think Niebla Roja was pretty forgettable up until this feud. He was kicked out of Los Guerreros Laguneros and looks a lot better and a lot more noticeable as a good guy. The big push doesnât hurt, heâs beating a lot of guys he normally wouldnât. I canât quite tell if theyâre going Mask vs Hair with Ultimo Guerrero or Mask vs Mask with Gran Guerrero eventually.

Rugby: All Blacks eager to pour cold water on Wallabies' Bledisloe Cup dreams
New Post has been published on https://diary.nz/rugby-all-blacks-eager-to-pour-cold-water-on-wallabies-bledisloe-cup-dreams/
Rugby: All Blacks eager to pour cold water on Wallabies' Bledisloe Cup dreams
It rained in Perth on Monday â the black clouds forming somewhere over the Indian Ocean and dumping so much water on this pleasant and spacious city that the roads were momentarily flooded before all the water disappeared 15 minutes later either into the drains or the Swan River which curls around the central business district â grey and flat in the gloom and then lighter as the blue sky returned.
How the All Blacks would like a similar response on Saturday, a flushing of the previous two mistake-ridden tests this year against Argentina and South Africa and a walk back into the sunshine as Japan looms large on the horizon.
If anything is going to spark a change-up in levels it should be the Wallabies here in Western Australia because there is a proud record to preserve and a rather large trophy to retain.
With the Wallabies feeling like they have turned a corner with a hard-fought win over the Pumas following a poor display against the Boks, it will be fascinating to see how this one plays out.
Another loss for Australia will add to the pressure on the combustible Michael Cheika ahead of the World Cup. For the All Blacks, a loss wouldnât be disastrous as a win seven days later at Eden Park would see them retain the Bledisloe Cup.
âObviously itâs going to be a big step up because the Bledisloe Cup means a lot to both teams,â Ben Smith said. âWith our review, we saw a lot of opportunities in our game [against South Africa] we could be better at and as players thatâs exciting.
âI suppose thatâs where we can take our game to the next level.â
Smith, who played fullback against the Pumas and on the right wing against the Boks as he made way for Beauden Barrett at the back in Wellington, will want to go to the next level himself.
He has come in for criticism after his two Rugby Championship games but has played so little rugby over the last eight weeks due to a serious hamstring strain in Super Rugby that rust must be expected.
âTo be honest I just enjoyed being out there,â he said. âI havenât played a lot of footy over the last couple of months so I enjoyed being back in amongst it. I love playing the game so it was good to be back. Iâve definitely got some improving to do and need to take some lessons on board like the rest of the team is doing.â
Dane Coles has made an impressive return to test rugby from injury. Photo / Photosport
Teammate and hooker Dane Coles has reason to be a little happier, perhaps. He was sharp as a replacement in the final quarter in Wellington and will be pushing Codie Taylor hard for a starting spot at Optus Stadium.
He too has had injury issues this year but is nearing his best. Like Smith, he spelled out the need for a big shift in levels this week. âWhen I came into this side one of the first things I learned was how important the Bledisloe Cup is and how important it is to keep it,â he said.
âIâm in a good place,â Coles said of his own form. âItâs a win every week Iâm on the field and just training with the boys.â
As the All Blacks set about putting a few things right, it will be against the backdrop of the passing of Brian Lochore, the inspirational former All Black No 8, coach and manager whose life will be celebrated at Mastertonâs Memorial Park on Thursday.
It will echo across a continent.
âI think it is important we do acknowledge him because of what he did for the All Blacks,â Coles said. âIâm sure later in the week⊠one of the boys might get up and have a chat and say what a special man he was.
âHe did a lot not only for the black jersey but also for the people of New Zealand.â

QUICK CHAT w/ Jamaica's Shantell "Shanz" Hill on Women + Sports + Media!
QUICK CHAT w/ Shantell âShanzâ Hill
Shantell âShanzâ Hill
This week our team had a little Quick Chat with the beautiful Shantell âShanzâ Hill of Jamaica. Shanz holds a Masters of Science Degree in Entertainment business (Full Sail University, FL), as well as a Bachelorâs of Science Degree (Hons.) in Hospitality and Tourism Management (UTECH, Jamaica), majoring in Food Service Management. Shanz is currently the only female marketing manager in Caribbean Premiere League and holds the title as Head of Marketing and Brand Communications for the Jamaica Tallawahs.
17 QUICK QUESTIONS with SHANZ
Tell us about where youâre from. I am from the bustling town of Old Harbour, St. Catherine (Jamaica). Spent my childhood between the  community of Old Harbour Bay then Marlie Mount.
Who or what inspired you to become involved in media? Media happened in three stages for me.
Stage 1 Whilst in university (University of Technology, Kingston Jamaica) a friend who had his own cable had an event â Carnival.. maybe Fashion Week I believe ⊠and his host could make it, at the start he asked if I could host and after a few minute Richard had the mic in my hand and the camera in my face.
Stage 2: My second entry was in 2009, I was 23 years old â I stared a Public Relations and Social Media Marketing Agency, after 6 months in Big Yard Music Label recruited me and parters to manage the  digital and PR affairs of its then roaster ( Christopher Martin, D- Major, Shaggy and Cecile etc). I stayed in the industry  through the years, expanding in my participation.
Stage 3: On- Air  (FAME 95FM)  and TV (RE TV) personality for  in the RJR GLEANER Group, in 2017 six months after joining the group as the Digital Brand Manager for Radio Services, the general manager of Radio â Dr. Dennis Howard called me in a meeting and advised me that I will be having my own show, he told myself and the program manager to banister a concept- this gave birth to IN Da Mix; it allowed me to talk about food, fashion, technology, moves and events â all the things I loved. Being both on Radio and TV gave me a perfect platform for expand the entertainment awareness for lifestyle conversation as well as to display my passion for soca and entertainment events.
3. How and when did you started in sports media? Sports Media ..Hmm I would say sports Marketing! I have been around sports all my life my family is a Pro- Sports family. Dad, uncles, cousins and brothers all played football and those who canât play are sports photographers or markets  (haha  me).. I played Basketball in high school â Old Harbour High, that afforded me sporting scholarship to UTECH  where I never suited up for Knights in basketball but did two seasons from then in football ( yes i was the Goal Keeper â No. 6 is still my number) and also for my faculty SHTM. But I actually  started in track and field ( spent  a little over 10 years with athletics in an informal way, supporting brands like Adidas and Puma). However my formal entry came in 2016 (I has migrated back to Jamaica from the USA, post my Masters of Entertainment Business Degree from FullSail), and took a meeting with the former owners ( Ron Parikh and Manish Patel ) of the Tallawahs Franchise. The meeting was to manage the party stand given my background, however I left the meeting with an offer to become the Head of Marketing for the Tallawahs, which I accepted in a heart beat.. why not!

4. What sport(s) do you enjoy covering most? Wow ⊠Iâd be very biased and say Cricket, well more specially CPL T20 . The tournament is amazing, the energy and opportunity to showcase our young and aspiring talents, our county, culture and caribbean makes me truly happy. CPL attracts 11 Million eyes annually and growing through our leadership in the digital space and diversity of teams, so having that power to influence makes it enjoyable.
5. Name 3 of your favorite athletes. Wow thatâs like asking a mom to say who is her favourite child ⊠Hmmm
letâs see -Thierry Henry (formally of Arsenal) Â Usain Bolt, Oshane Thomas (I am beyond excited about his future as a fast bowler.
6. Do you believe that there is gender equality in Caribbean sports? Gender equity and inclusion has A LOT Â more room for growth, I am seeing small steps both on the field and off but Iâd say we have about 70% room for added growth. Even in cricket I am looking forward to seeing more women both participating as well as in roles of leadership so as to support the growth of the sport. When I love at CPL our stadium is at 45 % female fans and social media has a higher ratio which means women are fans who will later become administrative support, which can become leading roles sooner than later.
7. Which female media personalities currently inspire you? I would have to â Debbie Harris (both on and off screen), Trsihana McGowan and Karren Madden (Girls Sports Club) ⊠oh wait Alexis Jordan she did a great job with Fan View on CPL  this year.
8. Favorite Recording Artist? Oh My gosh ..asking me to pick my favorite child! Let me break the rules and give you a few whom I am excited to grow beyond the region:
Christopher Martin, Kes, DâYani (super talented),  Voice, Tosh Alexander, Kim Nain, Khalia, Naomi Cowan ..my list is never ending, oh and  Jada Kingdom. Keep a tab on those names.
9. Favorite Movie? I am a hopeless romantic so Iâd say Pretty Woman  and Happily Ever After (50/50..haha)
10. Favorite Country to visit? Oh wow Normally iâd say London because of its rich culture and family but Thialand stole my heart last year. Â â Chang Man is now my home away from home if ever it was to be so.
11. Single or Taken? Single legally (âŠno ring yet) however my heart is currently occupied.
12. If your personality was a smoothie; what would be the ingredients? Easiest question ⊠Iâd say make this smoothie yours too!
1/4 cup FOSKA Oats (yes the brand quality  is important), 1 Banana, Tsp Flax Seed, 1 Slice Mango, Ice Cubes, 1 Scoop of iceCream,  1 Tblspn of Peanut or  Chocolate Chip Cookie, 1/2 Cup Water and or Milk to texture you see fit.
13. What can be done regionally to get more women involved in sports media? Wow so much more lets start with a Sports Marketing â Elective in CAPE Â or UWI. Get females into the mindset of moving from fans to FAMS (Female Agent Momigers ..yup I made that up. Women are built in nurturers and women are passionate, why not groom them to express to two essential qualities alongside management skills (which we know is one of the highest in the world). I want to see more women on the slide lines, marketing, presidents, board members on sports not just business and not just because they are âWOMENâ because they are capable and they can influence consumers.
14. Identify what lessons youâve learned so far in the sports industry. I have so many lessons wow I could write a book, but I being hard-working and communicating well is by far the best quality you can have not just in business, or sports but in life. Knowing how to communicate effectively and in timely manner illuminates 90% of issues that can make your careers more difficult. Once you master effective communication both written and oral then honesty, resilience  and reliability are key to making your efforts a success.
15. Name 3 Caribbean islands youâd love to visit? So easy ⊠Cuba, Barbados (still canât believe I havenât visited)  and Anguilla,
16. What do you like to do outside of sports? Music & Food (my Bachelors is Food and I Certified in Baking Technology ⊠yup i am an unofficial executive chef ..lol) I am as much passion for each as I do for media and sports.
17. Whatâs the best career advice you can give to someone looking into getting into the industry? Be Passionate about every task, be honest in everything you do, work harder thank you planned to and most importantly listen more than youâd like to.

Warren Gatland welcomes Wales open-side selection

Warren Gatland welcomes Wales open-side selection
Wales coach Warren Gatland says he is using the summer tour to âfind out about playersâ
Wales coach Warren Gatland says the summer tour is giving him an enjoyable selection âheadacheâ, particularly at open-side flanker.
James Davies impressed in a try-scoring display in Saturdayâs 23-10 victory against Argentina in the first Test.
Ellis Jenkins also caught the eye the previous week, as he captained Wales to a 22-20 win over South Africa.
âWeâre blessed at the moment with the quality of loose forwards weâve got and number sevens,â Gatland said.
âEllis was great last week and James was fantastic today⊠weâre here to find out about players and give them opportunities.
âThese boys have fronted up over the last couple of weeks and are going to give us some real talking points going forward.
âItâs a good position to be in, particularly as weâve got a couple who arenât here as well.â
Justin Tipuric was rested for the summer tour, while his British and Irish Lions skipper Sam Warburton and Josh Navidi are injured.
Gatland joked that the growing competition for places would be worse for those players not on the tour than for the coaching staff.
âI think some of the boys sitting at home watching on TV have probably got a worse headache than I have!â added the New Zealander.
âWhen you get a lot of competition, [absent] players are wanting the team to do well but not too well.â
Coach Warren Gatland was particularly please with Walesâ defence against Argentina
While enjoying the tussle for the seven shirt, Gatland was pleased with how his whole team played against a Pumas side whose core is from Super Rugby side Jaguares.
âIt was a fantastic performance from the boys,â Gatland said.
âWe were under a bit of pressure in terms of territory and possession, but we spoke before the game about how important our defensive performance was going to be⊠and they fronted up today.
âAs a coaching team you canât ask any more than that; the guys put their bodies on the line and delivered.
âThatâs a side [Argentina] thatâs been together in Super Rugby, so theyâre very familiar, and weâve had two or three weeks together as a side, putting different combinations out.
âWe feel like weâre in a really good place, Welsh rugby is in a really good place and weâre really looking forward to the next 12 to 14 months to Japan.â
With two wins from two so far, Walesâ tour culminates on Saturday, 16 June with the second and final Test against Argentina in Santa Fe.
Wales have not won a series in Argentina since 1999 and now have the chance to claim a rare prize.

Rihanna's Humanity â And Not Her Celebrity â Is Why She's Changing The Beauty Industry

Rihanna's Humanity â And Not Her Celebrity â Is Why She's Changing The Beauty Industry
Yahoo Lifestyleâs Diversity in Beauty Awards (the DIBs) highlights and celebrates personalities, brands, and products that embody inclusiveness and innovation. Fenty Beauty was a 2018 winner.Â
Rihanna is an award-winning musician who made the world fall in love with radio hits such as âUmbrella,â âWe Found Love,â and âWild Thoughts.â She is also a fashion muse for designer brands, including Dior and Puma. While there is no doubt that these successes play into the self-proclaimed bad galâs superstar status, in 2017 it was the debut of her cosmetics line, Fenty Beauty, that truly changed the game.
On Sept. 8 in Brooklyn, N.Y., Rihanna unveiled Fenty Beauty to a room full of beauty editors, bloggers, influencers, makeup artists, and industry experts. The range included a primer, highlighters, blotting powder, lip gloss, makeup brushes â and last, but certainly far from least â 40 foundation shades, ranging from very fair to very deep.
âAfter years of experimenting with the best-of-the-best in beauty â and still seeing a void in the industry for products that performed across all skin types and tones, she launched a makeup line âso that women everywhere would be included,ââ the brand shared in an official statement. In addition to her loyal fanbase, aka the Rihanna Navy, people around the globe were excited about seeing what they felt was one key element missing from the beauty world: makeup representation for all.
The products were available for purchase at mega beauty haven Sephora and department store giant JCPenney, and Fenty Beauty items sold like ice pops on a scorching hot summer day. In its first month, Fenty Beauty earned $72 million in media value (revenue received from social media), according to WWD. Riri managed to beat out other popular brands with her outstanding reach, including reality star Kylie Jennerâs popular namesake line, Kylie Cosmetics.
âI believe Rihanna is an icon across the board â fashion, music, and beauty â so not only were her fans super-excited but people into beauty products were also hyped,â celebrity makeup artist Ashunta Sheriff told Yahoo Lifestyle. âThe marketing and promotion on social media with makeup artists and models, as well as real women, also was just genius.â
Digging deeper into the numbers, it actually doesnât come as much of a surprise that Rihanna knows how to bring in the big bucks. In fact, in 2016, she was listed as one of the most marketable celebrities, beating out BeyoncĂ©, Jennifer Lopez, and KhloĂ© Kardashian, based on research conducted by the NPD Group. The same study also revealed that fans of Rihanna are 3.7 times as likely to purchase from the 30-year-old megastar as they are from other stars. With all the success Rihanna has already seen with other brands â such as Puma and Chopard â the marketability of Fenty Beauty was almost a no-brainer.
Of all the products Fenty Beauty has to offer, the most talked about had to be the Pro Filtâr Soft Matte Longwear Foundation. Available in 40 shades, it is an oil-free formula that can easily build from medium to full coverage. An added bonus: Itâs made with climate-adaptive technology to give your complexion a shine-free look that wears like second skin.
Editorial makeup artist Justine Purdue told Yahoo Lifestyle that the foundations also offer a wide range of âundertone variations.â Just a few short days after the official launch of Fenty Beauty, a tweet of a beauty display at Sephora showing nearly all the darker foundations missing went viral. The caption read, âThe dark Fenty Beauty foundations are sold out everywhere! This is for all the makeup brands who think the dark shades wonât sell.â
As Allure reported, certain beauty brands have made the statement that darker shades wonât sell. However, Fenty Beautyâs inclusive range of foundations proved that notion false. Another important statistic to point out is that in 2013, African-Americans had at least $1.3 trillion of total buying power, with black women specifically shelling out $7.5 billion annually on beauty products â 80 percent more on cosmetics than non-black consumers.

â Affinity Magazine (@TheAffinityMag) September 10, 2017
When it comes to creating formulations for skin of color, co-founder and chief innovation officer of Cover FX Victor Casale â who was also former founding partner, chief chemist, and managing director of MAC Cosmetics â told Yahoo Lifestyle, âThe most difficult thing when Iâm formulating dark shades is finding models and skin tones that I can bring into the lab to verify the shades. But I have done that. Iâve set up color verification labs in universities and colleges where I send my team.â He also points out how diverse the shade range can be within deeper skin tones. âThereâs a new shade born every day,â he said.
In addition to the vast range of complexions among people of color, a 2015 Cosmopolitan article highlighted that the process of formulating these foundations properly can be quite complex. Balanda Atis, a scientist with LâOrĂ©al USA (which owns LâOrĂ©al Paris and LancĂŽme), explained: âWhile brands might succeed in making darker shades, they didnât always get the undertones or the depth right.â
She continued, âTypically, there are four pigments used to create one shade: white, yellow, red, and black. To create deeper hues, some chemists mix in too much black pigment, which can leave skin looking bruised.â
âFor a caramel hue, there may be too much red or yellow, which can leave skin looking orange,â added Atis. âSometimes, chemists add titanium dioxide, a pigment used in many cosmetics to add coverage. Result: an ashy finish. So even when dark shades are available, many of them havenât been very good.â
While Fenty Beauty foundations launched during a year when there was a louder cry for inclusivity, especially within the beauty industry, there are a select number of brands â such as Black Opal, IMAN Cosmetics and Fashion Fair â that have catered to women of color since their inception, in addition to modern-day prestige picks from Make Up For Ever, NARS and LancĂŽme.
Reflecting back on the beginning stages of IMAN Cosmetics, Desiree Reid, the general manager of Impala Inc., explained why supermodel Iman was charged up to create foundations for women with deeper skin tones similar to her own.
âWhen Iman started modeling, she had to mix her own makeup â the artists on set never had her exact shade,â Reid said. âIman knew if she was experiencing this, then everyday women were feeling just as frustrated. There was a huge hole in the market. General market brands had two or three âdarkâ shades at the end of their lines, so women with skin of color had very little options to address their skin tones. This was what influenced Imanâs decision to create IMAN Cosmetics.â
Reid added, âMost women with skin of color express the same frustration about makeup not matching their skin tones. Thatâs why the IMAN range is designed for all women with skin of color. The problem with most brands is not that skin of color is difficult to match; itâs that most brands donât have experience with the nuances of skin of color. A brown foundation is not just a beige foundation with black pigment added to it.â
Other brands are continuing to make sure extensive testing is part of the process of creating new foundations as well. Manami Kuwamura, the executive director of complexion/skincare marketing and product development at NARS, spoke to Yahoo Lifestyle about the process of creating their latest Natural Radiant Longwear Foundation, which has 33 rich hues that cover a wide spectrum of complexions.
âIt took over 100 different submissions and two years in development to perfect our new Natural Radiant Longwear Foundation, which launched this December,â said Kuwamura. âOur goal was to defy the common expectation that long-wear foundations mean a matte finish. We challenged our chemists to create a formula using the serum base that delivered the highest amount of hydration with long wear capabilities.â
Make Up For Everâs general manager for the Americas, Laure de Metz, also spoke to the overall importance of inclusivity of the brand she represents, as well as others across the industry such as Fenty Beauty. âInclusivity is finally a major topic of conversation in the makeup industry, and as a brand that values diversity, universality, and self-confidence, weâre thrilled that more brands are creating foundations for a wide range of skin tones,â she said. âThere are several brands that come to mind, but itâs exciting to see both new brands like Fenty and Huda Beauty, as well as heritage brands like LancĂŽme and EstĂ©e Lauder, doing such a great job of creating shades for all skin tones.â
Tracking back to the epic success of the foundations of Fenty Beauty, it almost goes without saying that Rihanna isnât done yet. Shortly after the initial launch, a holiday collection came out and people were ready to skip paying a monthâs rent for it. Not too long after that, red-lip lovers were overjoyed to rock Stunna Lip Paint â a highly pigmented red some of our staff consider one of the best red lipsticks of all time. Then, Mattemoiselle Plush Matte Lipsticks dropped back in December with 14 universal shades that included a deep rouge cleverly named PMS, as well as a true navy blue called Clapback that blew up all over social media.
Along with everyday makeup enthusiasts, A-list celebrities are equally obsessed with Fenty Beauty. Gabourey Sidibe gave the line her stamp of approval, and Cardi B has been spotted wearing Killawatt Freestyle Highlighter in Trophy Wife. Guys arenât excluded, either. For the 2018 Oscars, Get Out star Daniel Kaluuyaâs rich skin toneglistened on the red carpet. His secret? Pro Filtâr Soft Matte Longwear Foundation in shades 480 and 490.
The beloved brand has marketing down to a science. In December, a fun face filter was launched to allow shoppers to try on Killawatt Trophy Wife. Then, on Rihannaâs 30th birthday (Feb. 20), a limited-edition version of the highlighter was released. Additionally, muses such as model Duckie Thot and recording artist SZA have strategically been included in all the Fenty promo fun. The brand also highlights the creativity of fans with the viral hashtag campaign #FentyFaceFriday, where they repost individuals of diverse backgrounds rocking Ririâs signature makeup line.

Rihanna knows how to handle negative backlash about her brand, too. When a Twitter user suggested she âinvite a trans girl to the groupâ for Fenty Beauty campaigns, this was the beauty mogulâs response: âIâve had the pleasure of working with many gifted trans women throughout the years, but I donât go around doing trans castings! Just like I donât do straight non-trans women castings! I respect all women, and whether theyâre trans or not is none of my business!â

Rihanna launched her latest products, the Beach, Please! Summer 2018 Collection, on April 6. This unique group of products includes two shimmering Body Lava Luminizers, a Face & Body Kabuki Brush, and a Fairy Bomb Glittering Pom Pom to give fans a sparkling, sun-kissed glow from head to toe.
There seems to be a pattern of optimal greatness here, and itâs crystal clear why Fenty Beauty was also awarded âInvention of the Yearâ by Time in 2017. âI never could have anticipated the emotional connection that women are having with the products and the brand as a whole,â Rihanna shared with the publication in an interview. âSome are finding their shade of foundation for the first time, getting emotional at the counter. Thatâs something I will never get over.â
Will Rihanna be the new queen of the cosmetics industry? After the phenomenal first few months Fenty Beauty has had, we can bet she has more extraordinary tricks up her sleeve that will continue to push boundaries, ignite colossal levels of black girl magic and continually shake up the beauty industry.
