How to get football autographs: a crash course

Fair warning: this will be a long post.

We’ve all heard it by now: the best way to get footballer autographs is to attend open trainings or wait outside their hotels and stadiums on match days. But what if you live far away or can’t afford to fly to training or games? Not to worry! Whether you’re a collector, a fan, or a little bit of both like me, quite a few clubs are still willing to send out autograph cards, as long as you send them a stamped addressed envelope.

You’ll find helpful how-to videos on how to do just that, along with links to some country stamp websites, below. These videos actually inspired this post:

Postage Questions:

What materials will I need to send a request?

You’ll need a letter containing your autograph request, 2 envelopes (one bigger and one smaller), a stamp/stamps (depending on size and weight) from your country and the stamp/stamps of the destination country.

I’ve bought my stamps. What size envelopes should I get?

I recommend getting c4 envelopes, as they’ll be big enough to hold your autograph request letter. These will be the envelopes you’ll mail out. If you go with a c4 envelope, I’d recommend purchasing c5 envelopes as your smaller envelope. These will be the envelopes the clubs return to you with the autograph cards inside, and you’ll slide them into your c4 envelope when you’re ready to mail them.

Be sure to include the club’s mailing address and your country’s stamp on the large envelope and your address + their country’s stamp on the smaller one

Where can I find a club’s mailing address?

You can usually find a club’s mailing address, along with their attitude towards fanmail, on the “contact us” tab on their webpage. If you can’t find it there, search the name of the club on fanmail.biz; they have the mailing address of just about every football club you can imagine.

What should I put in my autograph request letter?

The main thing here is to include which footballers’ autographs you want (if you don’t have a preference, you don’t have to do this; you can always say you’d be happy to add whatever player cards they’re willing to send to your collection, or something like that lol). Apart from that, what you include is entirely up to you! I wouldn’t recommend sending a super long letter, but if you want to add a personal touch, you can always mention one of your favorite memories of that club and their achievements. It doesn’t hurt to throw in a thank you at the end either :) one last note: you can address your letter to the club or the player whose autograph you’re requesting; it’s entirely up to you!

Do I have to send a stamped addressed envelope to every club?

Not necessarily. If you want to save money on stamps and envelopes, try emailing the clubs first. If you’re lucky, they’ll send the autograph cards directly to you and pay for the postage :)

Now onto the most important question: does it work? The answer is that it depends on the club you’re sending the request to and sometimes even the league they play in. I’ll break it down by league below, detailing either my own experiences writing to the club (if I’ve written to the club and heard back, I’ll state it outright) or that of YouTubers who have reached out to them. If you don’t see your club here, assume they either don’t reply to fanmail, or I haven’t heard of any success stories yet.

Premier League

Some Prem clubs still send out autographs, but not all. Here’s the ones that do:

Manchester United - pre-covid I’m pretty sure they sent out only hand-signed autographs upon request. Unfortunately, they seem to have cut back a bit on this in recent years; nowadays they tend to send a mix of hand-signed and pre-printed, facsimile signatures (this was the case for me when I wrote to them a few months ago and a few YouTubers that wrote to them as well). Still, pretty amazing given the size of the club that they’re willing to do this. As a United fan, I can’t help but feel a little proud :)

Liverpool - they definitely take the “you’ll never walk alone” motto literally, because they also still answer autograph requests with squad photos and signatures, at least as of 2021. To add a personal touch, they usually include a certificate with your name on it. Even though they’re United’s biggest rivals, I can’t help but respect them for this.

Arsenal - another big club that’s not too big for their fans; to my knowledge, they still send out hand-signed autographs. In doing research for this post, I even stumbled upon a video of someone who got an Arsenal match program, 2 squad photos, and autographs on the back of one of them. Talk about a big haul!

Tottenham - usually send pre-signed, photocopied autograph cards

Chelsea - sent out pre-signed, facsimile autograph prints as of 2021

Manchester City - sends out facsimile signatures only, according to several YouTubers (I’ve never contacted the club personally, so I’m not sure if this is still the case). If you do reach out to them, let me know what you hear back!

Crystal Palace - hit-or-miss. They tend to reply with pre-signed squad photos. They usually include a “south london and proud” bracelet from what I understand though, which is a fun perk!

West Ham - you might hear back from them, you might not (I didn’t when I tried a few months ago, but I know several other people did). If they do reply, you’ll likely receive hand-signed photos.

Aston Villa - sent out mostly pre-signed cards as of 2021

Everton - sent out predominantly hand-signed cards as of 2020

Leicester - send out a mix of photocopied and hand-signed cards, as of 2020 - they generally include player cards from the entire squad

Bournemouth - sent out pre-printed cards as of 2021

Newcastle - still sent out hand-signed photographs as of 2020

Bundesliga

If you want hand-signed autographs, look no further than the Bundesliga. In my experience, they send out the most hand-signed cards of any football league, and it’s not even close. In fact, you’d be hard pressed to find a club that doesn’t send out hand-signed cards. I’m assuming it’s the same story for the 2. Bundesliga (I know Schalke sends out hand-signed cards at the very least).

Bayern Munich - generally, they prefer you purchase cards on their website. Unfortunately, you have to be a member to buy signed cards on there; otherwise, you have to settle for pre-signed prints. That said, I’m pretty sure that if you purchase the player cards on the website and send a few back to the club to be signed, they will return them with official autographs. I sent in a request for Manuel Neuer’s autograph earlier this year and enclosed his player card, and they sent it back hand-signed. I included my membership number in my request just in case, but I know they’ve sent hand-signed autographs to non-members in the past (i.e. the YouTuber mentioned towards the beginning of this post). If you do reach out to Bayern, let me know how it goes. My fingers are crossed for you regardless 🤞

Borussia Dortmund - probably the most reliable of the Bundesliga clubs when it comes to autograph requests. They now limit you to 4 footballers per request, so you’ll have to be selective. That said, they usually reply quickly and send out hand-signed autographs every time. I have yet to hear of anyone who hasn’t received something back when they sent an autograph request to BVB.

Bayer Leverkusen - when I requested autographs from them, they sent me some back. I requested 3 players’ autographs, along with Xabi Alonso’s, and received all 4 cards back hand-signed. Quite a few YouTubers have had success hearing from them as well. Even though they’re having a fantastic season, they clearly haven’t neglected their fanmail, which is cool to see :)

Eintracht Frankfurt - sends out hand-signed autograph cards, even as of this season (they sent hand-signed cards when I reached out to them two months ago). If they’re your club, you’re in luck.

VfB Stuttgart - hand-signed cards

RB Leipzig - hand-signed cards

FC Union Berlin - hand-signed cards (I haven’t heard back from them yet, but it’s only been a week and a half at this point)

SC Freiburg - hand-signed cards

Borussia Mönchengladbach - hand-signed cards (I just heard back from them a week ago, and I think I got a mix of hand-signed cards and pre-signed prints)

FC Augsburg - hand-signed cards

SV Werder Bremen - hand-signed cards

VfL Wolfsburg - hand-signed cards

VfL Bochum - hand-signed cards, sometimes of the entire team (I received 4 cards in response to my request)

TSG Hoffenheim - hand-signed cards, often of the entire team

FC Köln - hand-signed cards

FSV Mainz - hand-signed cards, often of majority of the squad

La Liga

If you’re a fan of a Spanish club, you might be a lot less lucky, sadly. Only one club still sends out hand-signed autographs to my knowledge, and only one other club sends anything back in response to fanmail.

Real Madrid - occasionally sends out posters with pre-printed, facsimile signatures.

Sevilla - this is the club to ask for hand-signed autographs. That said, you probably won’t get more than one or two. I’d recommend being specific about which player(s)’ autographs you want in order to avoid being disappointed.

Ligue 1

Maybe the French league is more your speed. It’s a mixed bag here; while few answer fanmail, the ones that do are more often than not the most generous of any football clubs on this list.

PSG - the Parisians do still respond to autograph requests, but pretty much exclusively send out facsimile signatures.

Olympique de Marseille - have sent out pre-signed cards of their entire team in the past, along with a poster

FC Metz - sent out a mix of hand-signed autographs and pre-signed prints as of 2021

LOSC Lille - sent out autograph cards as of 2021

OGC Nice - sent out autograph cards as of 2021

RC Strasbourg - sends out autographed postcards, and if you’re lucky, they might include a squad photo and some stickers along with it :)

AS Saint-Étienne - send out hand-signed cards, although I’ve also seen them send squad photos addressed to the recipient, along with 2 issues of their club’s magazine

Eredivisie

PSV Eindhoven - sometimes send out autograph cards with facsimile signatures (pre-prints)

Swiss Super League

FC Basel - sent out hand-signed cards as of 2021

BSC Young Boys - sent out hand-signed cards as of 2021

Austrian Football Bundesliga

SK Rapid Wien - sent out hand-signed cards as of 2021

LASK - hand-signed cards (as of 2021)

Scottish Premiership

Glasgow Rangers - occasionally sends pre-signed prints (at least, as of 2021)

Ekstraklasa

MLS

Whether you’ve got a particular club in mind or you’re just a fan of one of the big stars (i.e. Messi), you’re probably in for disappointment. Autograph collecting isn’t super big in the U.S., and MLS treats autograph requests accordingly.

Seattle Sounders - one of the only two clubs in MLS that actually sends a response to autograph requests - one lucky collector was even able to get a hat signed by the entire squad! (see here)

NYCFC - sends out hand-signed autograph cards occasionally, usually only one or two

*side note: unfortunately, it seems like most people have only reached out to European clubs, (with the exception of the A-League and MLS), so I can’t speak to whether clubs on other continents fulfill autograph requests. If you reach out to any clubs in leagues not mentioned here, let me know and I’ll update the list :)

Lingering questions:

How long does it take to hear back from clubs?

In my experience as someone living in the UK, I’ve heard back from every club I reached out to within 2-3 weeks (closer to the 2 week mark in most cases). It depends on how far away you live from the club though. I heard back from Manchester United within a week of mailing my request, but they were the exception, not the rule.

Tldr: expect to hear back within a month (maybe a month and a half in extreme cases)

Do clubs answer autograph requests during the off-season?

In my experience, no. I tried this a few years back with no success.

Can I send a shirt to be signed by a player?

I wouldn’t recommend it, as you may not get it back. If you do, the club will probably just return it to you unsigned. You’re better off just requesting an autograph card imo.

Do national teams send autograph cards?

Some do! Last I’ve heard, the German national team still answers requests with authentic signatures and the Croatian national team has sent out signed cards previously as well. The Czech Republic sends out unsigned squad cards. Last but not least, the Dutch national team has sent out fan posters in the past.

bem, você vai obter seus desejos, não perca seu tempo dando atenção pra uma coisa manipulável, uma coisa que você controla.

Don’t mind the circumstances, they don’t matter, it’s the old 3D and the 3D is manipulatable. You can change it whenever you want. You don’t need to believe in your affirmation for it to manifest, and it’s totally possible for all those guys to like you. Since you chose robotic affirmations, here’s my advice: stick to your affirmations and saturate your subconscious.

Here’s how it works: Manifestation happens like this (in my view): First, you think/affirm it in the mental realm, which is the 4D. Then, you transfer those thoughts into the 3D, which is the physical realm.

Where does your subconscious fit in? Your subconscious absorbs those affirmations/thoughts, making them show up in the physical realm (where you’ll be super happy living your desires). That’s why the 3D and the circumstances around your manifestation don’t matter, because it’s an illusion that’s easy to manipulate. The more you affirm to your subconscious, the more it will accept it.

Conclusion? Well, you’re going to get your desires, so don’t waste your time paying attention to something manipulatable, something you control. Persist. Understand that 3D doesn’t show an absolute truth. Put yourself on a pedestal.

Minhas pernas balançavam rapidamente e de forma incontrolável. As borboletas no estômago voavam a todo momento. Era nítido o quanto estava nervosa, e a sensação pareceu triplicar quando o vejo entrar no restaurante e vir até o meu encontro.

This fic is quite dear to me because I've never seen fanfic where the main character is of South Asian descent and I wanted to take one for the team and write one

Compared to the other fic, this one is much lighter and has more of a summer vibe and I might finish this before the other one lmao.

Naaz gets a call from back home which dampens her mood. Her parents are beyond furious but she stays firm in her decisions. Enough is enough. She decides the best remedy is crystal clear water and a nice tan, and of course, the annoying brat happens to show up at the same time.   

Kylian goes on social media and is once again faced with an onslaught of critics who can’t seem to stop themselves from portraying him as an overrated evil money-hungry brat. He decides the best remedy is some alone time at the beach when he spots the fiery foreigner who seems to possess the ability to lift his mood without even lifting a finger.

u dont sound silly at all!! im privileged enough to have had football be a part of my life since i was a baby so it took me a bit to answer this since ive never rlly had to think about this lol. hopefully this helps:

do u know the rules? if not there are some youtube vids on the subject. or if u want a more condensed version go on tiktok. watching games also helps understanding the game better. personally rules r hard for me to remember w out live visual aid. it's easier (kinda) to watch teams u support. id also recommend watching iconic past recorded games if u wanna understand why certain teams or players have the following that they do.

do u have a team u support? if yes look into their social media. they have lots of nice content (not explanatory but it helps get u connected to the teams). this helps u get to know players better. all teams have fans (except atletico) but id also look into the non-toxic fan culture of each club. normally u support 1 (maybe 2) team(s) in a league (la liga, prem, ligue 1, serie A) and they're not direct rivals. ex. ac milan and inter milan are rivals so id be weird if u support both. u can like players on the opposite team but to cheer on both teams is... yah...

do u have any players that u like? watch their highlights and see which teams they play for. again not super explanatory but it does help watching 90mins of 22 men kicking a ball around if u like them.

I think the Italian teams will join because their league is worse than La Liga in terms of generating profits compared to the Premier League. PSG were against the Super League, but I could see them changing their mind because no one wants to even buy the broadcastimg rights to Ligue 1. The Premier League is the only league that is financially comfortable, so it seems unlikely they will want to join, not any time soon anyway.

I don't think psg is joining. The ECA (European club Association) released a statement against the super league today and its president is the same as psg's so we know where the club stands in that regard. Atleti just released a statement that they're not joining it either so they're out too. Italian teams are still quiet tho so maybe they'll join they need the money just as much as we do so we'll see. As for the prem someone from the English government came out and said they'll try to stop their teams from joining and the FSA (football supporters association) came out with a statement against it too... It's a tricky situation and the founders are going to have to work hard to convince the other big teams because it's not looking very good rn and Tebass sounds a little too smug for my liking. We'll have to wait and see but it's safe to say it'll take a little more time.

Comment avez-vous vécu ce retour sur le terrain ?

« C’était beaucoup d’émotion. Ça faisait huit mois que je n’avais plus joué … Ça a été très long, je n’ai pas vécu que des bons moments. Ça a été beaucoup de travail aussi. Je suis très heureuse de retrouver l’équipe, mes amies. »

How did you experience this return to the field? "It was a lot of emotion. It had been eight months since I last played... It was very long, I didn't only experience good times. It was a lot of work too. I am very happy to find the team, my friends."

Physiquement, comment vous sentez-vous ?

« Je suis de retour à 100 %. J’avais dit à Sonia (Bompastor) et au staff que je ne voulais pas rejouer tant que ce ne serait pas le cas. Je me suis sentie bien à l’entraînement la semaine qui a précédé le match contre Rodez, donc j’en ai fait part à la coach. J’ai pu jouer 30 minutes, j’étais super contente. Ça fait beaucoup de bien. »

Physically, how do you feel? "I'm back at 100%. I told Sonia (Bompastor) and the staff that I didn't want to play again until that was the case. I felt good in training the week before the match against Rodez, so I told the coach about it. I was able to play 30 minutes, I was super happy. It does a lot of good."

Vous avez retrouvé votre vitesse ?

« Oui, je pense (rires). Je me sens même plus forte et rapide qu’avant ma blessure, car j’ai fait énormément de musculation pendant huit mois. Quand tu te fais les croisés, les muscles de ta jambe deviennent tout flasques, c’est dur à remuscler. J’ai encore double ration de renforcement musculaire. »

Have you regained your speed? "Yes, I think so (laughs). I even feel stronger and faster than before my injury, because I did a lot of strength training for eight months. When you do the crossovers, your leg muscles get all flabby, it's hard to re-muscle. I still have double ration of muscle building."

Comment avez-vous vécu cette blessure ?

« C’était ma première grave blessure en carrière. Avant ça, mon maximum, ça avait été deux semaines d’absence. Mais ça m’a fait du bien. Ça m’a appris beaucoup de choses, comme la patience, moi qui ai besoin que tout aille très vite d’habitude. Là, c’était 4-5 heures de travail par jour, à répéter toujours les mêmes exercices, ça a été très dur pour moi. Mais j’ai été bien entourée durant toute ma réathlétisation par Rémi (Pullara), le prépa physique, qui m’a accompagnée au quotidien, dans les bons comme les mauvais jours. »

How did you experience this injury? "It was my first serious career injury. Before that, my maximum, it had been two weeks of absence. But it did me good. It taught me a lot of things, like patience, I who usually need everything to go very quickly. There, it was 4-5 hours of work a day, always repeating the same exercises, it was very hard for me. But I was well surrounded throughout my re-athletics by Rémi (Pullara), the physical preparation, who accompanied me on a daily basis, in good and bad days."

Beaucoup de joueuses étaient blessées en même temps que vous, ça a été plus facile à vivre ?

« Oui, même si pour l’équipe, ce n’était pas bon d’avoir autant de blessées en même temps (rires). Mais le fait de se voir, se dire coucou, travailler ensemble parfois aussi, ça aide. »

Pendant les moments difficiles, vous pouviez trouver du réconfort auprès de vos proches ?

« Oui, j’appelais ma famille mais c’était compliqué avec le décalage horaire. Il y a douze heures de différence, quand c’est le matin à Lyon, c’est la nuit à Sydney. Mais j’ai pu profiter de cette blessure pour passer six semaines en Australie l’été dernier, auprès de mes parents et mon frère. Ça faisait très longtemps que ça ne m’était pas arrivé car depuis mes 16 ans, je ne vois ma famille qu’une à deux fois par an en moyenne. Les voir sur un temps plus long m’a fait beaucoup de bien mentalement, et ça a été bénéfique pour mon genou aussi. »

During difficult times, you could find comfort with your loved ones? "Yes, I called my family but it was complicated with the jet lag. There is a twelve hour difference, when it is morning in Lyon, it is night in Sydney. But I was able to take advantage of this injury to spend six weeks in Australia last summer, with my parents and my brother. It hadn't happened to me for a very long time because since I was 16, I only see my family once or twice a year on average. Seeing them over a longer period did me a lot of good mentally, and it was good for my knee too."

Comment vous en êtes venue au foot ?

« Mes parents sont tous les deux profs d’éducation physique et sportive à l’école. On est tous très sportifs dans la famille. J’ai commencé le foot vers 3-4 ans, avec mon frère. J’ai joué avec les garçons jusqu’à mes 12 ans. Je voulais les battre donc il fallait que je sois au point athlétiquement car on n’avait pas la même musculature. Je pense que mon style de jeu assez agressif et physique vient de là. »

How did you come to football? "My parents are both physical education and sports teachers at school. We are all very athletic in the family. I started football around 3-4 years old, with my brother. I played with the boys until I was 12. I wanted to beat them so I had to be athletically fit because we didn't have the same muscles. I think my fairly aggressive and physical style of play comes from there."

Il y a bataille entre vous et Delphine Cascarino alors ?

(Rires) « On n’a jamais fait la course elle et moi, mais je pense que ce serait assez équivalent. Delph' et moi, on est les deux joueuses les plus rapides de l’équipe. J’aime bien jouer avec elle, ça fuse dans le couloir droit. »

Vous avez donc préféré le foot à l’athlétisme ?

« Oui, mis à part les Jeux olympiques, il y a plus d’opportunités internationales avec le football contrairement à l’athlétisme. Et puis, j’aime bien les sports d’équipe, je suis plus à l’aise dans un sport collectif qu’individuel. »

So you preferred football to athletics? "Yes, apart from the Olympics, there are more international opportunities with football unlike athletics. And then, I like team sports, I'm more comfortable in a collective sport than individual."

Vous avez fait le bon choix : à 16 ans, vous participiez à vos premiers Jeux avec l’équipe de foot d’Australie ?

« Oui, j’étais très jeune, ça a été une super expérience. De mes 12 à 15 ans, je m’entraînais tous les jours en sports études avec les garçons. Je suivais beaucoup de séances spécifiques pour travailler la technique avec un entraîneur particulier. Avant ça, j’ai joué en sélection avec les U16, puis avec les U20, aussi, quand j’avais 14 ans. J’ai toujours été surclassée. À cette époque, je n’étais pas défenseure, je jouais numéro 10. Puis je suis redescendue, on m’a proposé le poste de latérale droite et ça me convient très bien : tu peux aussi bien défendre qu’attaquer, même si ce que je préfère, c’est défendre. Je préfère empêcher une attaquante de marquer en stoppant sa frappe que de scorer. »

You made the right choice: at 16, you participated in your first Games with the Australian football team? "Yes, I was very young, it was a great experience. From the age of 12 to 15, I trained every day in sports studies with the boys. I followed a lot of specific sessions to work on technique with a particular trainer. Before that, I played in the selection with the U16s, then with the U20s, too, when I was 14 years old. I have always been outclassed. At that time, I was not a defender, I was playing number 10. Then I came back down, I was offered the right-back position and that suits me very well: you can defend as well as attack, even if that what I prefer is to defend. I prefer to prevent an attacker from scoring by stopping her shot than to score."

Vous êtes à l’OL depuis juillet 2020 et vous avez prolongé jusqu’en 2026, juste après votre blessure. Il n’y a pas eu d’hésitation ?

« Je me sens très bien ici. Je me projette longtemps dans cette équipe. Je ne vois pas de meilleur environnement pour moi. La qualité des entraînements, les infrastructures du club, la bienveillance du staff jusqu’au président font que c’est vraiment le meilleur club du monde pour les filles. »

You have been at OL since July 2020 and extended until 2026, just after your injury. Was there any hesitation? "I feel very good here. I project myself in this team for a long time. I can't think of a better environment for me. The quality of the training, the infrastructure of the club, the benevolence of the staff up to the president make it really the best club in the world for girls."

En quoi est-ce différent de ce que vous avez pu connaître en Australie et aux États-Unis ?

« C’est avant tout une question de mentalité. Ici, c’est toujours la gagne, la gagne, la gagne. On veut toujours gagner, tout le temps être les meilleures, que ce soit à l’entraînement ou en match. Cette mentalité te permet de te surpasser, de donner le meilleur de toi-même. »

How is it different from what you experienced in Australia and the United States? "It is above all a question of mentality. Here, it's always win, win, win. We always want to win, always be the best, whether in training or in matches. This mentality allows you to surpass yourself, to give the best of yourself."

À l’OL, vous avez connu deux entraîneurs. Dans une interview au Guardian, vous disiez être plus en phase avec le coaching de Sonia Bompastor. En quoi est-il différent de celui de Jean-Luc Vasseur ?

« Les deux coachs avaient une méthode très différente. J’aime jouer avec beaucoup de liberté, n’avoir rien d’autre à penser. Quand un coach me dit de jouer mon jeu, je suis plus à l’aise. Sonia est plus comme ça. Elle me guide aussi davantage en tant qu’ancienne défenseure. »

At OL, you knew two coaches. In an interview with the Guardian, you said you were more in tune with Sonia Bompastor's coaching. How is it different from that of Jean-Luc Vasseur? "The two coaches had a very different method. I like to play with a lot of freedom, having nothing else to think about. When a coach tells me to play my game, I feel more comfortable. Sonia is more like that. She also guides me more as a former defender."

Vous êtes très jeune. Dans quels domaines pensez-vous pouvoir progresser ?

« Athlétiquement, ce sera dur d’être encore plus rapide (rires). Mais techniquement, on peut toujours faire mieux. Je pourrais améliorer ma qualité de centre, par exemple. Lyon est le meilleur endroit pour progresser, aux côtés des meilleures joueuses du monde. J’ai 22 ans, je vais sur mes 23. Je pense qu’à 26-27 ans, je serai à mon apogée. »

You are very young. In what areas do you think you can improve? "Athletically, it will be hard to be even faster (laughs). But technically, we can always do better. I could improve my quality as a center, for example. Lyon is the best place to progress, alongside the best players in the world. I'm 22, going on 23. I think at 26-27, I'll be at my peak."

La seconde partie de saison sera-t-elle moins compliquée que la première ?

« La première partie a été difficile car il y a eu beaucoup de blessures. Les résultats n’ont pas toujours suivi mais n’ont pas été catastrophiques non plus. L’équipe a fait de très bonnes choses malgré ce contexte difficile. Le retour de plusieurs joueuses a changé les choses. L’équipe redevient de plus en plus forte et la deuxième partie de saison va être très intéressante. »

Will the second half of the season be less complicated than the first? "The first part was difficult because there were a lot of injuries. The results did not always follow but were not catastrophic either. The team did very good things despite this difficult context. The return of several players changed things. The team is getting stronger and stronger and the second half of the season is going to be very interesting."

La première grosse échéance est ce quart de finale de Ligue des Champions contre Chelsea. Comment voyez-vous ce match ?

« Je pense que c’est comme une finale. Chelsea est actuellement la meilleure équipe d’Angleterre. C’est le genre de match que l’on veut toutes jouer dans une carrière. Jouer à Stamford Bridge, ça va être vraiment cool. »

The first big deadline is this quarter-final of the Champions League against Chelsea. How do you see this game? "I think it's like a final. Chelsea are currently the best team in England. It's the kind of game we all want to play in a career. Playing at Stamford Bridge is going to be really cool."

Vous auriez préféré un autre adversaire ?

« Nous devons de toute façon battre les meilleures équipes pour aller au bout. Le niveau des quarts est tellement élevé que tous les matches sont comme des finales. »

Would you have preferred another opponent? "We have to beat the best teams anyway to go all the way. The level of the quarters is so high that all matches are like finals."

Serez-vous l’outsider ou le favori ?

« Je m’en fous ! Pour la finale à Barcelone, tout le monde nous voyait perdre et on a vu le résultat. En Ligue des Champions, tout peut arriver. Ce dont je suis sûre, c’est que ce sera un très grand match. »

Le mondial aura lieu cet été, chez vous, en Australie. Cela doit être très particulier pour vous ?

« C’est le rêve absolu de le disputer à la maison. Quant au fait de le remporter, ce sera difficile mais nous avons une bonne équipe, donc pourquoi pas ? »

Nous jouons toujours dans un stade plein en sélection. Notre premier match était prévu dans un petit stade mais il y avait une telle demande qu’il va se jouer dans un stade de 80 000 personnes. Il y a un vrai engouement, le football féminin se développe bien en Australie. Ce sera encore mieux après le Mondial. »

How does this World Cup present itself on the spot? "I'm sure it will be the best World Cup in history, especially since there will be 32 teams for the first time, like for the boys. We always play in a full stadium in selection. Our first match was scheduled in a small stadium but there was such demand that it will be played in a stadium of 80,000 people. There is a real enthusiasm, women's football is developing well in Australia. It will be even better after the World Cup."

Comment expliquez-vous que toutes les internationales jouent malgré tout en Europe ?

« Le problème, c’est que la ligue australienne dure seulement quatre mois, ce qui est très court. C’est pour cela que j’allais également disputer le championnat des États-Unis, qui en dure huit. On a toutes fait ça, mais c’est difficile physiquement, et il n’y a jamais de vacances. Maintenant, on joue toutes en Europe, où les compétitions sont plus régulières. How do you explain that all the internationals still play in Europe? "The problem is that the Australian league lasts only four months, which is very short. How is Ellie Carpenter off the pitch? "I am a very calm person. I like the city and simple little pleasures. Like walking along the Rhône or the Saône when the weather is nice, and having a coffee in a nice place with friends. I always find the best cafes in a city. Do you like Lyon's gastronomy? "Yes. I admit that I have a weakness for pralines. But you have a real problem in France with restaurants. We can't have dinner before 7:30 p.m.... It's much too late! In Australia, it is from 5 p.m. Well, I'm starting to get used to it anyway..."

Dès les premières questions portant sur sa convalescence, Ellie Carpenter indique que sa plus grande difficulté a été d’être patiente. Attendre n’est vraiment pas son truc. « Chemin du Roi » is the denomination of fan collective in the same manner « Factos FC » or « Messi FC » are used to name fans of specific world-renowned players. They're a bit different than these, though, because Messi and Ronaldo weren't playing in Ligue 1 (until 2021 for Messi) while Neymar had been in France since 2017. So unlike Ronaldo FC or Messi FC who are more global, the « Chemin du Roi » (Way of the King in English. Yes, it reeks a bit of dramatism. On August 21, 2019, a journalist for a French outlet writes, regarding the situation:

If by August 2019, the Chemin du Roi was effectively nothing more than a cry of protest against those who dared speaking ill of Neymar amidst Mercato rumors, the movement, in lieu of vanishing like all Twitter infatuation, instead cimented itself into FFT. One could say it was only a matter of time, after all, before Neymar had a similarly cult-like following to the very idols he was set to surpass. Ronaldo and Messi FC's reputation was at the time unprecedented, and enough to make a grown man cry.

Thus the Chemin du Roi seemed to be just one natural step to the modern crowned super-star fate that awaited him. The only step left to this fate, though, was a problematic one: winning the UCL. This problem proved itself to give the Chemin du Roi the very purpose lots accused them of missing: now, upon being asked "So what is at the end of the way? What's the goal of it all?" the Chemin du Roi could now answer "Winning the UCL."

By the beginning of 2020, this was clear as crystal. These supporters had already forged themselves a strong reputation on FFT — some very eerie and sexuals tweets that FFT obviously couldn't wait to blow out of proportion and make a mockery of, but also all that a cult-fanbase following entails: propaganda of the player to the last degree, utter obsession, blaming of others for each bad game, etc.

In Summer 2020 though, as PSG went on to beat each one of their opponents in a Covid-rigged UCL, the Chemin du Roi and the PSG supporters seemed to have found the Promised Land: a neutral common ground. The club was doing well; PSG supporters were happy. Neymar was doing well, CheminduRoi were happy. Overall, all praised the team, having the same objective in mind: the trophy that was missing. "The Chemin du Roi Neymar must lead us at Europe's summit. First stopover on this journey: Atalanta. We count on him to galvanize the whole team. The pressure, he deals with it. Hoping that the speaker is well loaded for the pre-game. 🔥"

All is well and good in the City of Light eh? Well, it is, until it isn't. PSG famously fucks up the final. Since that, it's been pretty much a complete fall-off from both sides. Most PSG supporters on FFT can't bear the Chemin du Roi, described as being lunatics, fanatics, unbearable (funnily enough, that's the words I would use to describe most of them. How the turn tables.) . The "immature" adjective often used to describe Neymar has, by mirror effect, been passed on to the Chemin du Roi apologists, who are seen by lots of FFT as blind, weird fan boys. A beef largely reciprocated by the Chemin du Roi.

Their reputation goes beyond the PSG FFT though, since, since there's been heavy rumors of Neymar going back to Barça in the summer of 2023, Barça FFT accounts start to complain about having to endure a Chemin du Roi mass migration.

So yeah. That's the Chemin du Roi for you. Just a fancy way of saying French Neymar FC, really. But a bit weirder even by Messi and Ronaldo's standards. Funny stuff.
