Coconut & Co, 1045 Valley Blvd, Ste A102, San Gabriel, CA 91776, Score: 38/50
Coconut & Co. is a Southeast Asian coconut-focused drinks & dessert café. They make things from scratch using organic young coconut water, coconut sugar, coconut meat, etc. Their recipes come from Singapore, where coconut shakes are popular.
Score: 40/50
Food: 5/5 – Choose from several types of Kaya toast (toast, cold butter, kaya (coconut) jam), pandan chiffon cake, purple sticky rice and Qing Bu Liang (build your own sweet cold dessert soup). The kaya toast with butter was simple but good (white bread, slab of salted butter, sweet coconut jam).
Coffee: 5/5 – They do have coffee but I haven’t tried it. The Malaysian tea is like milk tea. They’re known for their coconut shakes and coconut water drinks. The coconut shakes are very good – icy, refreshing, clean tasting, not too sweet. You can add toppings like boba noodles, young coconut meat, coconut flakes, sago, grass jelly, aiyu, etc.
Wi-fi: 4/5 – Free, unlimited, no password required. It worked well while I was there.
Ambiance: 3/5 – Feels like a boba shop with cute images of cartoon coconut characters on the walls, white and green color scheme, some plants
Noise: 2/5 – The pop music is super loud.
Plugs: 2/5 – Just accessible in one area
Parking: 4/5 – Plenty of strip mall parking in the parking lot, 4 hour limit
Comfort: 4/5 – Most of the chairs are padded but there are some stools that aren’t padded. Lots of lights. Tables are pretty close together.
Bathroom: 3/5 – Towards the back
Art: 4/5 – Cutesy coconut characters
Tips: Place your order on the self-serve kiosk. They’re happy to provide samples. You can adjust the sweetness level of the shakes and specialty drinks. Service always seems extra friendly.

7 Mar 2024 - I want to record down my job hunt journey so that I don’t forget the tiniest details when I need to do this again coming 14 months.
My thoughts:
I feel like I take things for granted in Malaysia, being on the higher side of the hierarchical on job application, which employers wouldn’t complain having a Bachelor Degree and an Australian graduate with experiences working with Australians / expatriates. I got headhunted by some of the well known recruitment agencies and I am not cheap by Malaysian standard.
But it’s an entirely different landscape in Australia, particularly in Sydney. The job market is very competitive, there are so many applicants for one job ad. And when I look at the data, the other applicants educational level is on par or higher than me. On top of that, the agencies chooses someone whose skill match is very close with the needs of clients - transferable skills through industries seems highly impossible although it does happens occasionally.
And I also found out that, clients will usually go with several agencies because one agency is only going to submit 2 candidates - so finding a headhunter to represents you is not going to be an easy task unless you can wow them with other more competitive applicants.
How to wow them? Well, they will give you a screen call (via phone) to see if your skills matches to their clients, and that’s your only opportunity to move forward. If you missed the call, they sometimes don’t answer or return the call back because you missed that window and they are already focusing on other candidates.
If the call wow them, then they would want to schedule a quick teams/zoom call on the very same day with super short notice because they need to get things move very quickly, so you gotta be very prepared.
So yea, with teams/zoom call, you get pass the stage to know more about the clientele - and it didn’t stop there. Even through the teams/zoom calls, they are still evaluating if you fit the role. Specific skills set are so important due to competitiveness.
Ok, you wow the agency via teams/ zoom call, the agency will then make decision who are the 2 candidates they will submitted your profile to the client because remember, they only submitted 2 and at most 3 candidates to one client.
If you think you stood very high chance because there are only 3 candidates to go against, you’re wrong - you’re competing with candidates from other agencies. During candidate selection process, the client will see which profile they want to interview. In other words, you may not be selected for an interview and if this happens, 2 things - either the agencies will forget about you or they will drop you off for other candidates. Talk about exclusivity, no it’s all about business and money.
Let’s say you have been selected for an interview by the client, you’re going to meet their HR or someone with some decision making to see if you have the skills set by giving you lots of technical questions. They will also evaluate if you’re best fit for their culture and their CEO’s work style. This is really subjective because the way they evaluate if you’re the best fit is very varied and to be honest, it feels really unfair - well, I am saying this because I got rejected at this phrase for being too professional (the CEO has more relaxed working style).
Up till here, the agency suddenly feels so cold towards you because you’re out of the game. Fine, the whole grinding process starts again.
If you manage to pass all that tedious stage then you have the green light to meet with the CEO. During the meeting with CEO, the CEO will evaluate your interpersonal skills, how you deal with some of the challenges and the chemistry of working together. Unless you screw it up, if you are at this stage, you are very close to wrapping up the whole process.
To date, I haven’t sign anything but I got a verbal offer for 14months contractual contract (covers for maternity leave). Oh, I forget to mention about this too - there are temps, contract and permanent role. Temps are generally shorter terms and payroll sits within the agencies and you don’t get paid on public holidays / off days and such while contractual roles usually covers for someone who is already in the role but will be away for X period of time, therefore they needed someone to cover for that role. If the person decided to come back for that role, and when your contract ends, you’ll leave or some company will see how they can transfer you into a different role if they have the opening - most of the time, it doesn’t fit because it’s not what you’re doing.
Seriously, it’s a very grinding process. Imagine doing this again after 14months - headaches.
What did I learned along the way?
Resume! It’s super super important.
I only started to get calls when I changed my whole resume to fit the OZ style because if you don’t, you wouldn’t even get past the ATS that are used by larger agencies.
Also, just as I am wrapping up, learned that one of the larger agency has exclusivity- definitely want to get on their good books.
And to see it in a positive way, I started as temp, and then a contractual role, so hopefully something more secure and with growth coming along the way.

Girls' Generation - Lion Heart
From Wikipedia:
“Upon its release, Lion Heart garnered mixed reviews from music critics. Slant Magazine's Anzhe Zhang wrote that the album was released to "quash" the suspicions that Girls' Generation was declining after the departure of member Jessica in September 2014. However, she added, "while [the album]'s great for omnivorous die-hard fans, it ultimately feels a little more than scatter-brained.” Chester Chin, penning for Malaysian newspaper The Star, praised the release of singles "Party", "Lion Heart" and "You Think" as "a promising start." Nevertheless, he disapproved of the rest of the album, dubbing it a "relatively tame offering" for "[traversing] way too quickly into filler territory" and criticizing the songs "Green Light" and "Paradise" for being too "generic." Kim Do-heon from South Korean online magazine IZM was slightly more positive towards the album, calling it "elegant", and appreciating the record's musical styles even though he felt that it was a decline compared to the group's previous albums as a nine-piece group.”
This felt like a worse version of IGAB, which itself felt like a worse version of Pink Tape. Overall score of 6.9 which might be just a tad low, but definitely not their strongest album either way.
Okay. So, in case you haven’t been able to tell yet, I’m a Massive fan of Jessica. And this album is, famously, the one after they kicked out Jessica. So I do have a bit of a personal agenda against this album abstractly. Now, specifically, I don’t actually think that’ll affect my perception of the songs or the album. I can’t pick Jessica’s voice out in any of the other SNSD songs that I know, and so I don’t think that her absence on this album will have any musical effect on my perception of it. And if the music is genuinely worse because she isn’t in it, then maybe they shouldn’t have kicked her out in the first place!
The only song that I know is You Think – which I actually listened to earlier today lol
Lion Heart
Bro wtf is that pizza
THat looks so undercooked wtf
Wait isn’t that this song on the TV?
(Oh I should say that I do SORT of know this song, I don’t think I’ve ever heard it all the way through)
I love the bass, getting some real retro vibes here
The MV is really nice actually. Love the aesthetic, love the story, the styling is alright, the choreo is a bit too sexy for what feels like a super bubblegum song imo
Haha the post-chorus rap! This feels very Twice actually
Oh my god I wonder if Twice have done a version of this song, that’d be crazy
And now they’re beating up the lion that’s so mean of them wtf
8/10, not their best work but it’s still pretty good
You Think
I haven’t seen this MV in Ages, all I remember is that it’s quite sexy by SNSD standards
Yep, these outfits certainly seem to fit that
Very stripped-back chorus. Bass and some horns(?) but mostly vocals
I dunno. I do have this song on my playlist but I hardly ever listen to it
That said, this sound sounds very Modern by SNSD standards. Like, something happened around 2014 where the sound of SM groups just Shifted somehow. I don’t know how to explain it.
7/10
PARTY
WHY IS IT IN ALL CAPS LIKE IT’S AN EARLY TWICE TITLE OR SOMETHING
Bass, woah that Bass is So bass
Bubblegum as hell lol
Haha wait I’m suddenly reminded of Cherry Bullet - Kka Kka. “Take take taking it to the top top top we’ll never stop stop stop till we get it done”
Oh my god this would be Such a good Cherry Bullet song too omg
The whistle in the chorus is … there. Not sure if I like it or if it’s too out of place
7/10, I really expect more from SNSD, but Bora and Haeyoon would have done a proper number on that song
One Afternoon
Oh this is nice, kind of low-key and groovy, love the guitar and the synth samples
Mmm
MMM these vocals
Okay, bringing in some strings, picking up the pace a tad
Random piano solo LETS GOOOO haha
9/10, this was so good like why
Okay, wow, I just got Really distracted trying to answer someone’s question on Reddit. Back to SNSD.
Show Girls
Crinkly, distorted intro man
The piano hits, bass, and vocals sure do sound like something out of a musical
Horns, alright
Okay, suddenly we’re faster and there’s a saxophone
This chorus feels so forced omg
Yeah… I think that this song is trying to be cool and things, but I am not really buying it
5/10. Harsh? Maybe. But… This was not that good to me
Fire Alarm
Why does them singing “danger” sound so comfortable haha
Bass is groovy, nice nice
I like the kind of synth scratch sound in the verses, that’s so good
Very synth heavy chorus, the vocals are kind of generic SNSD to me
8/10
Talk Talk
Rain
Certainly feels like rain
I do not like whatever that super high synth is
This song is so piano heavy, it’s like the driving force here
Nah, I don’t buy the last chorus. I don’t think the song built enough
7/10
Green Light
Pop electric guitar
Bubblegummy vocals
Nice and happy chorus, very synthpop. This is something that could easily be on Twicetagram
I’m jamming, it’s really nothing special but it’s also not bad
This bridge is SO Twicetagram haha
7/10, bubblegum goodness
Paradise
More synthpop bubblegum?
Sounds like it
The harmonies are pretty
Also like the vocalizations
Still, this is kinda mid by bubblegum standards. This would be like, one of the later-mid B-sides on Twicetagram
6/10
Check
And now we’re dark?
Oh okay, not that dark, just sexy
Haha “lipstick check, high heels check” that was cute
I dunno about this one. It feels very similar to what we’ve had so far, and even though it’s a bit bassier, it’s still bubblegum synth pop
7/10
Sign
More synthy bass, or is this electric guitar?
Maybe both
Some trumpets, okay
That was it? That was the chorus?
Yes, “more and more and more,” please do give me more because this sure isn’t enough
Okay, a bit more to the chorus this time, that’s good
Ah yes, obligatory trap moment
Bass moment
6/10, this felt so filler to me
Bump It
Ballad time, I guess it’s about that time in the album
Mmmm never mind I guess
Claps and very little instrumentation
Guitars here and there, some extra percussion
Now we’re just bass drum and vocals
6/10

Australian State Flags rated
Vexillology is a subject that, like many others, I have a passing interest in. Very passing. Look I occasionally browse r/vexillologycirclejerk, the One Good Subreddit, because they have some very fresh and funky memes.
One thing I do know about vexillology and flags in general is that nobody ever actually looks at state/provincial flags, and that as a result there’s a bunch of weird ones hanging about. I’m sure this is even more true of Australia, seeing as we have many less people to care about our many fewer state flags.
So for today, I’ve decided to shine a light on some state flags and see if they’re any good. Spoilers: they probably aren’t great? (Edit: they’re also largely very very similar, oops!)
New South Wales- in keeping with the name, New South Wales apparently has decided its flag should be fairly Welsh as well. Except not, because the image on that one is a cool dragon instead of this random lion, and the red cross is actually an English thing. This is extremely lame! The placement of the O R B is also pretty awkward and uneven, leaving a whole bunch of blank space that’s just. Blue. It’s centred if you just look at the right half, but it looks weird next to the Union Jack.
I don’t like the Union Jack. Get used to seeing the Union Jack a lot. 1/5.
Queensland- Okay, so, we took the NSW one, took the lion and the cross off it, and put a nice little crown on because, you know, Queen. While this is somewhat less ugly than the lion, it is also less cool, because fuck the royalty. Add in the cyan not contrasting well with the darker blue (imo) and you have a recipe for another not good flag. 1/5.
South Australia- Well now we’re getting somewhere. Take the previous two, get rid of the shit designs in the circles and replace them with an extremely good bird. Look at that plumage, that dramatic posing! What a good. That, and orange (its supposed to be gold I think, but come on) is a good colour to go next to navy. Unfortunately, it’s still sitting next to the fucking Union Jack, so it’s not going to be that good. Fuck colonialism, 3/5.
Tasmania- Wait ok so this is just a lion again, but if the lion was drawn by the same person that did the welsh dragon. It’s a lot less busy without some nonce cross in there (save Jack in the corner), which is great, but Bri’ish lion flag designs never look good to me. You want your iconography to be simple but striking, in my opinion, but whenever they put a lion on there it has to have too many details to communicate “lion” that it just looks super mid. 2/5.
Victoria- of the many, many places on this Earth named after Queen Victoria, this state sure is one of them. We’ve dropped the circle motif for this one, which is nice, but the crown is still fucking there. This is literally just, we took the country flag, and replaced that cool star with a lame crown. Somehow this is Dan Andrews’ fault. 2/5
Western Australia- I’m obviously biased, but it’s a very good little swan we have there. Black swans are iconic of Perth, there’s many, many of them on the Swan River (funnily enough), and they’re common enough that it’s not hard to spot one of them doing something gnarly and immediately ruin all majesty they ever had for you. In my case, it was when one of them looked like it was preening, or at least sleeping with its head tucked in its wing, for a few minutes before dropping a deuce and buggering off.
But I digress. It’s also on a gold background, representative of the intense sunlight that we live with in WA. It would be great if just the right half of this flag was the whole of it, but unfortunately, lmao Union Jack. 3/5.
Australian Capital Territory- What you thought we were done? Come on now. There’s like, 2 internal territories and 3 external ones still to go.
With the states behind us, we get to say goodbye to Jack as well. He shall not be missed. Uuuunfortunately, while we do get the classic Southern Cross, we also get this ridiculously busy design on the right. These swans are so mad, and why are they standing like that? Why is one of them white? Why is there a fucking castle here, we don’t have those? The mind boggles. 2/5.
Northern Territory- Oh, that’s much better. The southern cross ditches the bluey background for the much more accurate pitch black of space, which contrasts great against the ruddy brown of the desert the Territory largely is. The flower is simple, but elegant, and uses the same colours as the left third which I appreciate. This is just a good, solid flag. 4/5.
Christmas Island- For as much as Australia gets associated with the “green and gold”, I’m surprised it took this long for that colouration to actually show up on the livery. I’m not a huge fan of, just, the map of the place on the flag for the place, and Green/Gold and Blue/White aren’t a great colour combo. But there is a very good bird here. 3/5.
Cocos Islands- Yo that’s the crescent from the Malaysian flag, huh? Yeah so apparently the history of this place is kinda fucked (Australian history, bad? Nooooooo….), but the residents are largely Malay descendants, so fair enough. As far as the flag goes, it’s an interesting mix of iconography that is largely fine apart from the absolutely terrible looking palm tree on the left there. That’s some 2002 clip-art shit right there. I actually like the right 2/3rds of this, so just… remove the left third. Actually I think most of these flags would be significantly improved by the removal of the left bit. 3/5.
Norfolk Island- It’s just a tree, dude. 4/5.
Well that’s all of them. Ultimately, most of these were bad, and none of them were actually, like, great. That’s kind of just state flags for you, though. I’m no expert vexillologist, but there are only a couple flags that have truly caught my eye, and none of these fit that bill.
We have a lot of stinkers, and tragically, nothing nearly stands out like some other countries get their state flags to do. As a final note to leave this on, and to prove my point, I’m going to present the flag of the Isle of Man.
Fucking Brits actually have a good one. Can we get this instead of the Union Jack, please? Thanks.
#ramble#australia#vexillology#state flag#the indigenous one isnt on here because honestly it should just be in all of them in place of the UJ

Who Is Lithium?
Name: Lithium Aino Pöllönen (JJBA), just Lithium (other fandoms), Ll-36 (Lab ID)
Height: 5’0”/152.4 cm
Weight: Varies by age. Has been listed as 135lbs/about 61kg.
Species: Human-Animal Hybrid, Part Clouded Leopard, Part Gray Wolf, Part Giant Australian Cuttlefish
Ethnicity: North American (German, Scottish and Gray Wolf descent), Malaysian and Australian. This is changed to the appropriate regions and such based on the fandom.
Birthday: January 13th
Creation Date: Fall 2008
Fandoms She Has Been In: Naruto, One Piece, MCU, TMNT, DBZ, The Legend Of Zelda, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure
Sexually Attracted to: Men, Amab NBs, is Demisexual-leaning, but her animal nose can override her initial lack of sexual attraction. Does find women aesthetically attractive but it ends there.
Likes: Drawing, Anatomy and Physiology, Cheesecake, Movies, MST3K (where applicable), Alcoholic Beverages, Challenging arrogant people to drinking contests, recharging in the sun like the feline part of her, children, goats, chickens, general homesteading, brewing alcohol (One Piece only).
Dislikes: Crowds, whichever biological parent is the evil one (it’s been both), overuse of onions in food, sleeping clothed (does it for others), sudden loud noises or sudden strong smells, green olives.
Background: In all fandoms, she is a subject to some sort of genetic experimentation experiment, which is known as Project Toy Soldiers in three fandoms, which is creating the genetically spliced children for nefarious purposes. She is either the sole survivor or one of two survivors, some of the others dying from experiment complications, others killed in front of her. She escapes with the help of her not-evil biological parent who dies in the process and is adopted in some way or another by a person or people whom she considers her true parent(s).
Lithium picked up drawing while still in the lab and by the time she shows up in the fandom, has near-photographic level drawing skills from years of drawing anatomy. Once free from the experiment, she uses the studies to hone her shapeshifting, which is from her cuttlefish DNA. She spends most of her time out and about in a human disguise, which is derived from her good bio-parent’s appearance.
Unique Abilities:
In all fandoms, she is a shapeshifter, able to take on many forms and alter her body parts for certain abilities, such as gills for breathing underwater and wings for flight, though the latter is particularly difficult so she uses it sparingly. She cannot alter her biological sex and can only change her height six inches in either direction. The farther a creature is from human form, the harder it is for her to hold. Ex: Cat- mild difficulty, Sea Cucumber - Impossible. She is also able to combine parts of different creatures for combat purposes, such as one affectionately known as ArmdilLith. As said before, this ability is from her Cuttlefish side, though she is better at it than they are because she can study anatomy.
From the Clouded Leopard side, she received a super flexible skeletal system, allowing her to contort herself into all sorts of positions only professional contortionists are capable of. She also received her very long fangs, as clouded leopards are the last saber toothed cat. Clouded leopards are also in the same category as cheetahs, who cannot roar and have an ossified hyoid bone that allows them to purr. Lithium also has an ossified hyoid bone and it’s cute as heck when she purrs.
She had a relevant ability specific to each fandom, such as a Stand in JJBA or chakra use in Naruto, with details specific to that world.

danganronpa oc #6 | kaori takahashi
Name: Kaori Takahashi (高橋香織)
Alias(es): Kimberley Takahashi, Liu Xiaoyan (刘小燕)
Nickname(s): Riri, Kashi-chan, princess (by her mother), Bombshell (stage name), Trauma Queen (secondary stage name), “The Derby Diva,” and “The Derby Princess”
Gender: Female
Age: 17 years old (due to the memory wipe, she is two years older than she believes, making her 19 years old in actuality)
Birthday: February 6th
Super High School Level/Ultimate: Ultimate Roller Skater, Super High School Level Roller Skater (超高校級の「ローラースケーター」)
Hair Color: Black with streaks of purple, pink, neon green, and white
Hair Style: Kaori usually styles her hair in a high ponytail, with the top of the ponytail being notably wide. Her hair is rather long—reaching just above her knees—and incredibly curly, and she achieves those curls by styling it. There are two short strands of hair on each side of her face, and said strands also have a curly look. Usually, two parts of Kaori’s ponytail rest over her chest.
Eye Color: Hazel
Height: 5’7” (170 cm, w/o skates), 5’9” (175 cm, w/ skates)
Weight: 110 lbs (49 kg)
Nationality: Japanese
Ethnicity: Japanese (although she does have Chinese, Thai, and Malaysian ancestry)
Other Notable Details: Kaori has a beauty mark on the right side of her right hand. She has another on the side of her left pinkie finger, and another on her neck. She also has dimples that show up on the corners of her mouth.
Accessories: Kaori has a black choker around her neck, as well as a pair of large black hoop earrings in her ears
Personality: Despite her expressive and “loud” style, Kaori tends to be rather quiet and reserved. She doesn’t have much to say normally, and only speaks up when it comes to trials or when someone brings up her interests. When it comes to Kaori’s interests, she tends to ramble about them, and she gets quite far into her ramblings until she catches herself. She acts a lot more outspoken on the rink and when she’s alone, and she tends to be quite loud, eccentric, fun-loving, and extremely competitive. Kaori is very family oriented and she cares about the people in her life a lot, even if she isn’t good at showing it. She’s a good listener and is always up to listen to her loved ones vent to her, although she’s not always good at offering support. Circling back to her interests, Kaori loves when her friends engage in them with her, and she enjoys doing their hair or makeup in rather wild and gyaru-esque styles for them. She also loves teaching her friends how to roller skate, and will gladly hold their hand if needed (especially if they’re a girl). When it comes to her more negative traits, Kaori is easy to anger, rather stubborn, and she tends to hold (sometimes pointless) grudges for a long time. Due to her wanting to uphold her “eccentric” personality, she tends to hold in her tears for a while, and completely ignores when she’s reaching her breaking point. She doesn’t like showing others when she’s frustrated, sad, or upset (as it stems from her past), and will usually bottle up her feelings until she eventually breaks down emotionally. Despite her looks, Kaori is actually quite smart, witty, and observant. She’s also incredibly passionate about roller skating, and will defend it with everything she has if needed.
Likes: Eurobeat, idols, Chinese, doing hair or nails for others, dancing (especially when combined with roller skating), fashion subcultures, manga, baking, pudding, tea/hot chocolate, nigirizushi, holding hands, phone charms, and drawing
Dislikes: Horror movies, heights, pineapples, dubstep, extremely cold weather, temaki, and spiders
Hobbies: Drawing, baking, listening to music, speaking over the phone, reading manga, singing/karaoke, blogging, shopping (online and in person), making earrings, decorating her phone, designing clothes, sewing/crocheting/knitting, and collecting shoelaces, manga panels, & magazine scraps
Habits: Kaori has a habit of flipping her hair, as it usually falls in front of her face a lot due to its length. Even when her hair is not impeding on her vision, she tends to flip it regardless. Kaori also has a habit of slightly dancing or quietly humming to a song stuck in her head, as well. She also has a habit of sticking out her tongue or making this face, “:|,” when she’s concentrating. Kaori tends to stick out her tongue even when she’s not concentrating on anything.
Phobias/Fears: Spiders (arachnophobia), heights (acrophobia), small spaces (claustrophobia), and being abandoned/forgotten (athazagoraphobia)
Skills: Doing hair/makeup/nails, singing, arts & crafts, designing, making embroidery, and (simple) acrobatics/tumbling
Status: Alive
Execution: Work in progress.
Motive: Kaori’s motive would be her mother. Ever since Kaori’s father was forced to divorce her mother when she was young, her mother has been her biggest comfort and support system. She encouraged Kaori to start skating despite their lack of income, and she is one of the people that Kaori would do anything for. She even continued skating and promised to become popular so that she and her mother could live more comfortably. Seeing her mother in danger or possibly even dead—especially after she split from her husband and had lost her only daughter—would send Kaori into a panic, but like always, she’d try to be level headed and convince herself that Monokuma is simply bluffing. In a worst case scenario, bottling up her true feelings would push Kaori to her breaking point.
Birthplace: Ebisu, Tokyo, Japan (a few months after her parents’ divorce, however, Kaori and her mother were forced to move to Yanaka, Tokyo, Japan)
How She Discovered Her SHSL/Ultimate: Kaori has always been quite the huge manga lover. When she was nine, her mother bought her a manga titled “この女子高生の歌姫はスケートを履いています (Skate-Clad Schoolgirl Diva, or more literally, “This Schoolgirl Diva Wears Skates”),” and Kaori loved everything about it. She found herself wanting to be like the main character, and that desire wasn’t just some childhood fantasy that would fade away. Due to her somewhat reserved nature, she didn’t bring it up with her parents right away, but finding out that her friend’s older sister was a roller skater increased her interest in it. Her parents suddenly bought her a pair of roller skates for her tenth birthday, much to Kaori’s delight. She taught herself how to skate (with her father’s guidance), and was then invited to join her elementary school’s roller derby team. During her first competition, she ended up placing first.
History: Coming soon.
Family:
Father | Hidehiko Takahashi; hails from the wealthy Takahashi family, is one of the heirs to their pharmaceutical fortune, got a doctorate in philosophy, had become a best-selling author, and never remarried after his & his wife’s divorce
Mother | Mamiko Takahashi (née Nakamura); hails from the working class/working poor Nakamura family, considered dropping out of high school at one point to support her family, managed to graduate college as salutatorian with a degree in music, tried but failed to start a singing career, became a socialite, philanthropist, and jet setter upon her marriage, lost that lifestyle upon her divorce, and now works as a receptionist for the Togami Corporation (previously worked as a waitress for two years)
Love Interest: N/A
Friends: Sayaka Maizono, “Junko Enoshima,” Chihiro Fujisaki, Aoi Asahina, Makoto Naegi, Leon Kuwata, Yasuhiro Hagakure, Crystal Bienvenu, Ariana Park, Hayley Park, Roy Hoffmann, Jacqueline Kim-Taylor, and Haruka Togami
Neutral: Kyoko Kirigiri, Sakura Ogami, Kiyotaka Ishimaru, Mondo Owada, Hifumi Yamada, Toko Fukawa (she and Hifumi make Kaori visibly uncomfortable with what they say sometimes, however), Celestia Ludenberg, Byakuya Togami (they are in good terms, though; same with her & Kyoko), and Danielle Park
Enemies: Junko Enoshima
Trivia:
Kaori is known for changing the colors of the streaks in her hair every competition. She’s also known for changing the colors of her laces for every competition, as well
During derbies, she wears inline skates (that usually light up; the colors for that pair are the same as the colors for her four-wheel pair). Outside of them, she wears standard, four-wheel skates. She is seen wearing her four-wheel skates in-game
When her popularity as a roller skater grew, people would usually tell her that she reminded them of the main character from “Skate-Clad Schoolgirl Diva,” which is something she really liked hearing
Kaori designs her own outfits for roller derbies. She likes to stand out during competition, which is why she designs them herself and why they have quite a lot of unique elements stemming from other fashion subcultures
Kaori chose her secondary stage name, D!VA, as a reference/homage to the manga that inspired her to start skating
Her primary stage name, Bombshell, was a name given to her by her friends in middle school, as she was known for being rather pretty, and she was also known for her eccentric, charismatic, and competitive nature on the rink
She has stated that her (somewhat sudden) celebrity status and large amount of fame compared to other skaters has overwhelmed her and stressed her out from time to time (due to her reserved personality), but she mainly doesn’t mind it as it’s recognition for her talent and she knows that her fame will help her and her mother
During her parents’ divorce, Kaori turned to things like roller skating, art, and fashion to help her cope. She originally got into fashion because of her mother, but she discovered other subcultures on her own
Kaori is fluent in three languages: Japanese, English, and Chinese. She learned English at an international, all girls school that she attended in elementary and middle school, and she had her mother teach her Chinese (she also has indigenous Chinese, Thai, and Malaysian blood from her mother, and descends from the Uyghur, Miao, and Khamu people)
She also knows a decent amount of Russian, as she also learned it in middle school. She’s pretty good at it, as her accent is rather impressive and she knows a lot of basic and even complex sentences
She wanted to learn Russian due to thinking it was an interesting language, and she also liked how it sounded
She tends to draw a lot of fashion related pieces, such as outfits she finds online or her own designs. She also draws casual doodles (such as flowers, landscapes, small self-portraits, or people that she knows) from time to time, as well
In addition to designing her own derby outfits, Kaori also designed her modified uniform that’s seen in-game
Kaori is known for her unique gyaru style, which is a combination of grunge/mall goth, ane-gyaru, rokku gyaru, kogyaru, and mid-to-late 2000s bimbocore. She’s also known for incorporating many bright colors and combining them with black, her love of fishnets, and she’s one of the more popular dark-haired gyarus in Japan (and around the world).
She is also known for creating the gyaru sub-styles of “rogyaru” and “kagyaru.” The former is a combination of roller derby styles and gyaru/kogyaru fashion, and it is mainly based off of Kaori’s unique derby outfits. It is a combination of the first syllable of “roller skating” or “roller derby” and “gyaru,” and it was created on an online forum. The latter is based off of Kaori’s everyday style, and it was created by a gyaru circle that was created around Kaori’s style of gyaru fashion (the circle is also considered one of her fanpages). The term is a combination of the first syllable of Kaori’s name, “ka,” and “gyaru.” It can also be translated as/called “Kaori gyaru.”
Kaori’s mother taught her how to sing from an early age. Although she never thought about turning it into a career, she has been singing since she was four and had been in choir for a year in elementary school. She is said to have quite the good voice
Holding hands is a very comforting gesture for her, as she used to hold hands with her father a lot, and still does so with her mother
She wears soft pink blush, black eyeliner, and neon pink eyeshadow
She knows how to sew due to her hobby of designing a lot of her outfits
The wheels on Kaori’s roller skates actually light up, but she doesn’t turn on the lights unless it’s dark enough or unless she’s competing. The colors of the lights can either be neon green, purple, neon pink, sky blue, white, or red. Each individual wheel can also display a different color
Kaori is extremely ticklish, and is ticklish on her neck, stomach, armpits, and ribs
She has clusters of bruises/scabs on her knees, elbows, and knuckles. Roller skating is a rather violent contact sport, and Kaori usually skates on concrete or hard wood floors, which explains why she has so many. However, they’re not that noticeable as they’ve either faded or healed slightly
Kaori suffers from a mild traumatic brain injury, as she sustained a concussion during a derby when she was 15. It culminated in short periods of memory loss and brief migraines from time to time afterwards
After her parents’ divorce, Kaori used to be able to visit her father for three nights a month, and during the holiday season. However, after two years, her paternal family was granted the permission to cease those visits, attempting to cut all contact between Kaori and her father
Despite that, they are still allowed to speak to each other through the phone (which is why she prefers calling people, as it’s the only way that she can get to hear her father’s voice again)
Although her parents have divorced, Kaori is still considered the sole heiress to the Takahashi fortune (after her father), as her father has taken multiple precautions to make sure she upholds that position. Even with that, there have been multiple attempts by her paternal family to exclude her from the inheritance, especially since they see her as “illegitimate” (even though she isn’t)
(Some development trivia: her name was originally supposed to be Ayaka Nakajima or Ayaka Hashimoto)
#we got another oc & it didn’t take me 7 months :))#n e ways kaori is certainly one of my favorite dr ocs#she’s also been in existence since late last year i believe !!#she hasn’t had a name until now tho 🏃🏽♀️💨#n e ways KAORI TAKAHASHI SUPREMACY ‼️#(also first japanese dr oc purr 🤪✌🏽)#danganronpa#danganronpa oc#dr1#trigger happy havoc#trigger happy havoc oc#dr1 oc#danganronpa 1#danganronpa thh#original character#cece speaks :)

Ahoy there! I'm back with another study post °˖✧◝(⁰▿⁰)◜✧˖°
So if you aren't aware already, me as well as various other study bloggers are notorious for writing aesthetically pleasing handwritten notes. Notes aren’t absolutely necessary if you prefer to do without. A lot of my friends and acquaintances don’t bother with them and prefer to rely entirely on the lecture materials provided. I find that it helps me indefinitely in my studies and as a brief creative outlet which I rarely give myself the time for.
Why take Notes?
Instead of printing the lecture materials given digitally, I've taken it to re-write the lecture notes a few days prior to the lecture. Some lecturers insist their students read the material to get a grasp of the topic before the lecture and this is taking it a few steps further. They say writing something down is equivalent to reading it 7 times, meaning getting into memory this way is so much more efficient which is one of the biggest reasons I insisted myself handwrite my notes. Also writing your own notes is totally customisable to your needs, do you prefer mind maps or lists? Infographics or paragraphs? Minimalistic or colourful? It's all up to you.
Why I personally take notes
Different plants have different needs. Some need to be watered daily, some twice a day and some every other day. Some thrive in nutrient-rich soil and some prefer to sit in dry sand. Just like plants, each individual student has different needs and circumstances to thrive. For me, since I have a relatively low attention span and am a relatively slow learner, I needed the head start of reading topics beforehand to catch on with the rest. To me, with proper preparation for lectures, attending the lecture is like filling in the missing puzzle pieces. At least it should be. Also, I'm more of a visual learner, so if you're like me, then well structured, colourful and easy to read notes are not only more appealing but really help me in my studies and help me grasp topics a lot faster.
SUPPLIES
Probably the part where everyone is pumped for but I'll to simplify as well as be in-depth as possible.
Basically, you need paper and a pen. Need some colours? get some highlighters or coloured pens. Some people usually go one or the other but you can benefit from using both systematically.
What I look for in my preferred paper:
Thicker paper (120gsm) because I use markers and pens that bleed through anything less and I like my paper sturdy because I heavily reference my notes and I don't want them to get worn out as quickly (i want to actually try to use thinner paper and be gentler but not sure how much I can commit to it o(╥﹏╥)o).
Smoother paper is good if you use felt tips so they don't get damaged that quickly.
Line spacing. Its a waste of space and paper if you have small handwriting but largely spaced outlines. Not easy to find though.
Line colour. I prefer lighter lines such as light grey if possible, it just looks tidier that my writing contrasts more than with jet black lines.
Recycled or sustainably made paper. Because environment. Trees happy. Duh.
At the moment I'm a fan of loose-leaf paper because I'm not a fan of wasting notebook paper at the back (plus its even harder to get the paper features I want in notebooks unless I'm lucky) but if I were to succumb to using notebooks, I would definitely prefer thread-bound or hand-sewn over spring bound just because I think metal springs are annoying and if they're plastic, they aren't recyclable. You know me.
In conclusion, it's hard to find test pad with all of these features, you can consider printing your own notepaper if you're as picky as I am but you do you. If you can only afford flimsy see-through paper, that's alright. But make sure your supplies are appropriate for them as most of the supplies I use will bleed even on regular paper
Pens
Don't bother going all out and using fine liners or drawing pens to write notes. Get practical. Pick your poison. Smooth gel pens or dry ballpoint? Ergonomic or Budget-friendly? Disposable or refillable? My only guideline is to make sure they have waterproof ink because in any case, you need to send in an assignment last minute and have to rush through the rain without a folder you definitely want your writing to be at least legible if anything. (yes I learned this the hard way, yes illegible work will cost you a lot of marks. don't make my mistake 。:゚(。ノω\。)゚・。
Also. Black or Blue? Studies show that writing in blue improves memory collection but black is the more neutral aesthetic. What do I do? I use black as my main colour and write keywords and important facts in blue to take advantage of its memory-enhancing properties.
My current preference: Zebra Sarasa Clip (because its made of 75% recycled plastic and is a good quality pen) with Pentel Energel refill (gel ink that dries quickly. that's all I need)
Budget-Friendly: There are good quality pen sets at the ECO shop (Malaysian dollar store) or buy disposable pens in bulk at any book store. Trust me, it saves a lot more than buying a brand new 80 cent pen every now and again. (Also including the cost of transportation to the store because when you live independently, every cent matters) It's not exactly environmentally friendly but hey, anything to cut the cost right?
Zero Waste option: Fountain Pen with a converter (not the cartridges) and glass bottles of ink refill. Yes, it sounds daunting but its zero waste if that's your cup of tea. You don't have to go all out and buy an expensive luxury fountain pen made of stainless steel, or go fancy and get a flexible nib. If you ask me, I have my eyes set on the pilot kakuno fountain pen, its simple, aesthetic and highly recommended for beginners (although not plastic-free its made out of 85% recycled plastic which is cool since I'm hoping to make a one time purchase, I won't mind it being made from plastic but that just my taste)
Coloured Pens
So I haven't been a fan of using coloured pens for a while but ill tell you I'm currently using a cheap set of coloured gel pens from Kaison just because they have cute patterns but the ink flow isn't that smooth so I should've bought something more practical. The ultimate budget-friendly option which is not only cheap but long-lasting and good quality, and ones that I’d recommend for anyone is the Papermate Kilometrico ballpoint coloured pens. So far I only know they come in five colours but they've been my favourite for years. Most people I know that disagree with me usually don't like the colour range or arent a fan of dry ink but if you aren't that picky and looking for a reliable option they're a good option, plus if you're using cheap paper, they won't bleed or anything so that's cool.
Highlighters
I love pastel highlighters. Its soft, cute, aesthetically pleasing to the eyes and some colours are better at actually highlighting words rather than their neon counterparts like green and purple. Although not the cheapest option, I doubt ill ever go back to neon highlighters ever and ill only be recommending pastel highlighters thanks.
My current preference: I'm currently using Monami Pastel Highlighters just because they were on sale with comparable prices to unbranded cheap pastel highlighters. I will never recommend commonly branded highlighters like Stabilo Boss or Zebra Mildliners because the extra pennies just aren't worth it since the unbranded kind has lived up to my standards. (also I haven't tried those branded highlighters mind you but I doubt I'm missing out on anything)
Budget-Friendly option: While Zebra Mildliners are being sold at RM5 for one and RM25 for a set, Mr DIY sells knockoff brand "BEIFA" for RM7 for a set of six which is a pretty good deal if you ask me (also there are double-sided ones with a bullet and chisel tips if you thought mildliners were the only option with those features). I've also found some rare gems, unbranded pastel highlighters hidden in common bookstores for an even cheaper price, but they're really hard to find unless the pastel highlighter trend decides to catch on. I digress.
Zero Waste option: I heard about highlighter pencils, just wooden pencils with neon colour pigments, but why get trendy when you can use any old wooden colouring pencils lying around? I don't think ill give up plastic highlighters for wooden pencils despite being a strong environmentalism advocate but there are a few options for highlighters made from recycled plastic but they either don't come in pastel colours or too pricey for my taste (yes I'm a cheapskate for crud sake)
Extras
These other things aren't exactly necessary but they add little flourishes and/or aid you in your note-taking. Not exactly an extra investment but its completely up to you
Sticky notes (or coloured memo pads) for extra notes, diagrams or equations which I like for them to stand out a bit. (Pastel over neon of course)
Washi tape to divide subchapters (but a highlighter streak does the job)
Correction tape because never will I ever use correction fluid mind you
Brush pens for headers (completely unnecessary but I don't have any other outlet to practice brush lettering so.) Recommendations: Artline Stix (chunky but super cheap, marker type not for thin paper), Pentel Fude Touch (great for beginners, small and practical, 83% recycled plastic, but will bleed on regular paper)
Alternatively, a regular black felt tip marker just to make the title stand out is good enough.
NOTE TAKING TECHNIQUES
An underrated note-taking method is the Cornell method which is frankly a systematic way to write notes in which you divide the paper into 4 sections, a place for title and date and stuff, the main body for notes, extended side margin for extra info/lecture comments/questions/subtitles and bottom quarter reserved for a summary of the notes. Some people modify this technique by omitting the summary section, depending on your needs.
Bullet points and indents. This is pretty self-explanatory, but it's pretty much notes that aren't chunky paragraphs. Easier to read, easier to register information, easier to skim through. You get the gist of it.
Highlighting system. Some people go all out with their highlighting system and designate colours to certain things such as green for vocab, orange for equations, blue for subtopics. etc. You can try this out if you want, but for me, the plethora of colour is quite distracting and not that aesthetically pleasing, but you do you.
BREAKING DOWN MY METHOD OF NOTE TAKING
My priorities to note-taking are: Easy to read, simple, decluttered and visually pleasing. For colours, I mainly use up to 4. Black pen for the main information, blue pen for keywords (or any coloured pen that matches the highlighter), one or two highlighters as a colour theme and matching sticky notes for extra info, diagrams or equations.
I assign a whole chapter to a specific colour theme, first assigning a certain highlighter colour to the first six chapters, if there are more than six chapters, I use 2 accent colours just to shake it up a bit. This makes it easier to differentiate the chapters when flipping through your notes.
So its, hand-lettered title (i do my lettering quite quickly, mind you) or all caps title in black marker. Mini banner doodle for subtitles (a simple box with a drop shadow works just fine), contrasting coloured keywords (or underlined) and highlighters just for accents like dividing subtitles or drawing boxes for extra info (that or sticky notes). I don't simplify my lecture notes, rather rewriting them in a more orderly manner and leaving a good amount of extra space here and there (or an extended margin if I use Cornell) for extra lecture notes. Also, I highlight whatever notes that my lecturer would point out as important or worth remembering. And that's pretty much it. After the lecture, I then know which parts of the notes were more vital and can then simplify those key points into flashcards which ill discuss in a different post.
Thanks for reading, I know my posts are pretty long but that's the way I like them, long but in depth. As usual, if you would like me to cover any specific topics, feel free to message me or give feedback. I hope to be able to write 2 or 3 articles a month if I can but until then, have a nice day. Study smart peeps.

What is nsr? It looks super cool
👀 Ooh, hello~ Seems I’ve caught your interest with my spam ;’D
NSR stands for No Straight Roads, it’s a cool action adventure game with rhythm game elements. You play as Mayday and Zuke, members of the indie band they call Bunk Bed Junction, as they try to bring back Rock music to their city in place of EDM. Music is what powers Vinyl City, and they think the EDM industry is doing a pretty crummy job at doing it.
The music in this game is an absolute bop, all of it, listen to the soundtrack I dare you. EDM may be “hurrdurr bad” in game, but those boss battles make you want to dance instead of fight, they went so hard...
youtube
Each character has their own style/genre ^ this is just one of them! (this is the one that gets stuck in my head the most aha, that one and the classical styling of vs. Yinu)
And the character designs are top notch! Bright and colorful, everyone is incredibly different and creative--also have a case of Big Hand Syndrome, but that makes it even more fun. From space left shark, to a robo boy band, a pretty lady with six arms, to the main characters with green skin and funky dreads and elf ears, everyone is all over the place, but it works! The locations and stages are incredibly pretty too!
All in all, it’s a very fun game, I really enjoyed it! And it slips both a lot of Jojo references in there and Malaysian culture too! It’s available on most gaming systems, pc too, I got it for Switch. It can apparently played with 2-3 people too.
#NSR#no straight roads#james landino works on some of the music!!#I really enjoyed it!#it's probably a little short but it hits all its marks#the game has got it's few flaws#I will admit#but i am a simple woman#so it's not too big a deal for me#I'm not sponsored by metronomik#but if you're out there...#Anonymous

#10 Chatto
Crossing off the list one by one, this is my most anticipated pitstop out of all the stores I have or have yet visited the past few months.
Situated just behind the Arch in Gadong, this small bubble tea shop is easily recognizable with its Japanese-infused name and design.
Chatto brings the ‘tea’ in healthy!
Known for its Japanese-inspired tea bar, this Malaysian franchise is more than just bubble tea - it provides a healthier choice of beverages for its customers by using fresh and natural ingredients.
While most boba stores are found to have high levels of sugar, Chatto redefines bubble tea by offering drinks at its standard sugar level of 30 per cent so customers can enjoy the natural flavour of the tea. However, customers can still choose their own sugar level per request.
Upon opening its door to the public, Chatto introduced six drink series; their Signature Series, Milk Tea Series, Latte Series, Specialty Tea, Pure Tea Series and Super Brown Sugar Tea Series.
After much consideration, I decided to opt for their Super Brown Sugar Tea Series - the Peanuts Brown Sugar Pearl Latte for only $4.90. At first sip, I can already tell it is going to be one of my favourite drinks of all time.
The drink was very subtle in taste - in a good way. However, the brown sugar pearls comes in sweet (and tender) which balanced out the drink altogether - giving the drink a tint of sweetness. But what makes it even more tasteful is the extra peanut toppings, which give a little texture to the already creamy liquid. Sweet, but healthy!
Moreover, Chatto also serves Japanese-inspired light snacks such as their famous Takoyaki which comes in a set of six ($3.50) and nine ($5.20). You will not be disappointed!
But let’s acknowledge the elephant in the room, shall we?
It is none other than the big green neon signage across the room. I mean - that is one way to advertise your brand!
Upon entering, customers are immediately greeted with a minimalist Japanese-inspired interior; simple white tiled walls, light wooden panelling and their signature green as a pop of colour. These combination creates a very calming and relaxing atmosphere - so “zen” - which makes it a perfect spot to study or hang out with friends while enjoying their free wifi.
Thus, this boba store managed to climb its way up to my top three with its healhy selection of drinks and picturesque interior.
With the growing number of people who are now becoming more health-conscious, Chatto is here to serve your healthy dose of pick-me-up!
P.S The fact that I know who designed the store (a close friend of mine) makes it even worth visiting! Just look at the entrance, isn’t it inviting?

just the piano, i was learning the shamisen on my own as well just a little before our partial lockdown but became too depressed to learn anything at all lol. i used to be able to play the harmonica also but i dont think anyone misses that HAHAH
12 - random facts?
i have pretty lousy heat tolerance for someone who quite literally grew up on the equator. as soon as the temperature goes above 25 degrees celsius i start sweating a bit. back when i worked restaurant kitchens i got made fun of a lot because i’d often be the only person in there sweating so much!
13 - aesthetic?
to wear: either very staid and boring like those muji styles or just fucking out there. like bugs bunny t-shirt dresses covered in belt buckles and gold sneakers. depends on mood
for my living space i like subdued colors, not much stuff placed around, no patterns or prints whatsoever. dark blue, grey, a nice off-white, natural wood. those are good. greens are nice but wintry color schemes are the most comforting. my love for minimalism isn’t so much some moral thing lol i just get sensory overload easily
14 - favourite tree?
definitely the pine
15 - favourite flavour of crisp?
(zach what’s hawaiian onion?!) mieng kam. it really was super good lol i was surprised. mieng kam is kind of a thai snack btw. they give u some leaves and u fill them with a bunch of little fragrant things. then u wrap it up and eat it. if u want to try this flavor, look for the Lays brand of chips in ur local asian mart
16 - crosswords or sudoku?
as much as i shit on it: sudoku. but ultimately my fave puzzles are cryptograms
17 - which book would you recommend everyone read?
the wind in the willows hehe
thanks zach! tagging.... all of my mutuals

The Ultimate Guide to Instant Noodles
A variety of instant noodles from different countries
How to mash-up, deconstruct, and altogether upgrade the versatile staple of dorm room dining
As a semi-professional noodle slurper and collector, I’ve eaten hundreds of noodles in my life, but I have a particular soft spot for one type, specifically: the instant kind. You know, those hard squiggly bricks of dried, fried noodles with accompanying seasoning packets that have long been the foundation of the American collegiate diet. Since the pandemic started, I’ve been showing off my impressive collection of instant noodles to my friends on FaceTime like a YouTube beauty guru flaunting their makeup stash.
I love instant noodles for many reasons: They have a nearly indefinite shelf life; they are an easy breakfast, snack, or — with the right bolstering — a full meal; and, they come in a panoply of shapes, textures, flavors, and colorful packaging styles. But while there is nothing wrong with eating instant noodles according to the instructions, it’s their versatility that’s made me a devoted fan. Here’s how to mash-up, deconstruct, and upgrade the dorm room staple.
1. Load up on protein
Yes, many instant noodles come with their own packets of dehydrated vegetable or meat flavoring, but they rarely provide much real taste and add zero in the way of texture. Supplementing your own additional proteins will do a lot to make your instant noodles more satisfying and nutrition-rich. Try simple items like ground meat, sausage, tofu, and leftover fried chicken — or my personal favorite ramen topping, pork char siu. Meat shortage got ya down? Just crack an egg. You can stir it right in to create an egg-drop soup effect, or poach the egg gently in the soup broth to enjoy breaking the creamy yolk.
Chicken-flavored ramen with garlicky sautéed kale, roasted chicken legs, and carrots.
2. Go big with toppings
Going nuts with the add-ons at ramen restaurants can mean spending $30 on a bowl of noodles (toppings normally cost between $1 and $3 each.) But at home, you can have as many toppings as the inventory of your fridge’s produce drawer allows: scallions, corn, mushrooms, kale, you name it. Not sure about what to do with all those weird greens in your CSA farm box? Add them to your instant noodles! Fact: There is no such thing as a lousy topping for instant noodles.
3. Deconstruct everything
Each element of the instant noodle package is a multi-purpose cooking superstar. The seasoning packets add a pop to stir-fried vegetables. Broken into bits, the uncooked noodles are an excellent crunchy topping for a salad or even another non-instant pasta dish. Do yourself a favor and add some ramen seasoning to mac and cheese, or how about using those instant noodles to make buns for an at-home ramen burger?
4. Switch up the liquid
To deepen the character of the soup, try cooking the noodles in vegetable or chicken broth instead of plain water. There are plenty of wilder recipes out there, including this one I’m skeptical of that uses milk, but homemade stock is a safe jumping off point.
5. Mash-up different styles
Mixing different instant noodle styles and seasoning packets is a culinary art form in itself, and can have big payoff. Jjapaguri (also called ram-don), the famous dish from the Oscar-winning movie Parasite, is actually just a hybrid of two different kinds of instant noodles — Neoguri and Jjappaghetti — and has become one of Korea’s national dishes. The magic comes from the mixing of Neguri’s spicy seafood powder with Jjappaghetti’s savory black bean powder, which ignites a lethal umami bomb. But jjapaguri is just the start. Try mixing Neoguri and curry noodles to create an exuberant, spicy curry broth. Combining super spicy noodles with something cheesy is also 100 percent never a bad idea.

The Ones to Know
Here, then, are some of the best instant noodles to stock up on, categorized by whether or not they’re “brothy” (the noodle soup kind) or “saucy” (brothless noodles with a separate sauce).
BROTHY
MyKuali Penang White Curry Noodle If you love Penang curry, try adding this noodle to your cart. These wildly popular Malaysian instant noodles are considered some of the best in the world on this heavily opinionated ranking. Three whole flavor pouches — one of them is a paste — make for a deep, coconut-y taste and hearty portion size that you rarely get from instant noodles. Add toppings like fried tofu or prawns.
Neoguri, Spicy Seafood Udon Noodles Neoguri, a Korean word for raccoon dog (neither a raccoon nor a dog; discuss), has been my top choice for ramen since I started slurping noodles at the age of three. This beloved Korean instant noodle is known for two things: thick udon-like noodles and a spicy seafood broth with actual dried seafood. It’s fantastic with any fishy topping or add-ins.
Nongshim Shin Ramyun Noodle Soup Shin Ramyun might be the very first Korean instant noodle brand, as well as one of the easiest to find internationally: I still remember the exciting moment when I found Shin Ramyun in a random gas station in Alabama. It’s known for its spicy broth, and doubles as an excellent noodle for Korean ramen beginners. Top this with a slice of American cheese to tone down the spice and pump up the greatness.
Prima Taste Laksa Coconut Curry Lamian Noodles This Singaporean instant noodle inspired by traditional laksa has a paste sachet that can and should be used for stir-frying vegetables, too. The noodles are rounder and less wavy than others, and the white powder adds the signature creaminess.
Mama Noodles Thai cooking doesn’t shy away from acid, and neither do these Thai instant noodles, with just the right balance of acidic and salty flavors. The wavy noodles and the powdery seasonings make a great snack — though it may not be hearty enough to be a standalone meal. Beef it up with a hard-boiled egg and other vegetable toppings, like scallions.
Sapporo Ichiban Tokyo Chicken Momosan Ramen Think Japanese shoyu ramen, in instant form: salty, slightly smokey, and clean tasting. It’s great with plain old white-meat chicken breast — which is hard to say about anything, really.
Paldo Gomtang Oriental Style Noodles with Beef Soup Base Not all Korean instant noodles are spicy! This mild, creamy Korean noodle soup is inspired by gomtang, or beef bone broth. It has an intense beefiness and is excellent with hearty greens like cabbage or scallions. Add some ground beef to make it more filling.

SAUCY
Nongshim, Jjapaghetti (Noodle Pasta with jjajang Sauce) “On Sundays, I’m the chef for Jjapaghetti” has been a Korean catchphrase for more than a decade. A combination of two dishes — jajangmyun (black bean noodles) and spaghetti— this saucy Korean instant noodle is also what spurred the ram-don trend after its crucial role in Parasite. The accompanying savory black bean sauce is all it really needs, though I highly recommend a luxe drizzle of truffle oil, too.
Indomie Mi Goreng Instant Stir Fry Noodles If you haven’t tried this Indonesian instant noodle, stop what you’re doing and fix that immediately. The package comes with a liquid seasoning mix of savory onion-flavored oil, sweet-spicy chili sauce, and sweet soy sauce, creating a salty-and-sweet coating for the wavy noodles. Any optional toppings like grilled steak or boiled eggs are just gravy.
Samyang Extra Hot Chicken Flavor Ramen Are you up for #FireNoodleChallenge? Join the leagues of people who’ve filmed themselves slurping these dangerously spicy noodles. There are multiple flavor options available, from carbonara to curry, and all of them equally fiery. Cover this with lots of mozzarella cheese to tone down the heat to the point where you might actually enjoy it.
Tseng Noodles Scallion With Sichuan Pepper Flavor This Taiwanese instant noodle is all about texture. Its curling, knife-cut-like strands are a perfect match for the sauce. There are many different flavors, besides this scallion one, such as black sesame and shallots. Depending on the sauce, the noodles textures vary. Think of this as gourmet-tier, since it costs slightly more than other noodles, but it’s totally worth the splurge.
Paldo Bibim Myun Cold Noodle The spicy, tangy, sweet sauce of these Korean noodles will wake up even the dullest of palates. Cook the noodles until they’re just al dente, or still a little firm, then rinse them under cold water to get rid of any residual starch and achieve peak bounce and chew. The sauce packet is an excellent salad dressing, too. Add some chopped cucumber and hard-boiled egg for a clutch midnight snack, or add some ice cubes for a cooling summer treat.
Mom’s Dry Noodle Sichuan Spicy The Taiwanese knife cut-style noodles cling to the oily, spicy sauce for maximum slurpability. Top with a fried egg or fried cubed tofu and you can almost pretend you’re at a restaurant.
