Summer‘s Kiss

Luna

”You done painting me like one of the French girls?“ I hear some water splashing and look up only to see Bryce smirking at me. His mouth moves and post out water like a fountain.

”Who said I was painting you?“

”Oh please. I felt you watching me.“

”Ugh. Fine. I was sketching you. Want to see it?“

He nods and swims closer.

”Sure. I hope you got my good side.“

”Did I ever get your bad side?“

Bryce grins.

”No, but I don’t think I have a bad side.“

He comes out of the water, and I’m distracted by a water droplet sliding down his body for a second.

I feel my face heat up because I still get flustered around him even after all these years that we’ve been together.

So I try to focus my attention on his face and not his body.

He looks at my sketch. To which I’ve added some light watercolors. They’re faint, but they’re there.

Bryce looks taken aback by the sketch.

”Damn. Can I frame that? This is amazing.“

”You think so? It’s just a bit of lines with coal. And some watercolors. It’s nothing fancy.“

He puts his hands on his hips.

”Don’t be modest Lu. This is fantastic. I mean I always knew you’re talented but this? This is amazing work Lunes.“

I blush at his compliment. Still not used to Bryce complimenting my artwork.

”Thank you for saying that.“

I kiss him and he’s surprised at first but then he smiles and gently pulls me closer.

I groan but then I pull away.

”I’ve got to leave some kisses for later.“

Bryce pouts.

”No fair. You always stop when it gets interesting.“

”That’s because I don’t feel like getting carried away at Manoa Falls where I can easily slip and fall. I am still pregnant. There’s no way in hell I am risking our kids this way.“

He gets that smile where his eyes soften and his whole body relaxes.

”What?“

”I love it when you say our kids. Makes me look at you, not able to believe we did this. Our magic created this.“

”I’m pretty sure there’s no magic involved in sex. It was pretty much watching my ovulation, waiting and peeing on test stripes to see the words pregnant. But if it makes you feel better B let’s call it the magic of our bed.“

”It was our bodies who created the magic, the bed was just a side piece.“

My snort turns into a full-on belly laugh.

”This is one of the reasons why I love you. You always make me laugh.“

Bryce smiles at me and we continue to spend a couple more hours at the waterfall before the air gets chilly and we decide we should head back.

I take my coal pencils and my watercolors, put them in my bag. I take Bryce’s outstretched hand.

Rays of sunshine, warming our backs as we walk back home hands intertwined.

HEAVY MUSIC HISTORY: '5 Seconds Of Summer' by 5 Seconds Of Summer

'5 SECONDS OF SUMMER split the rock world in half ten years ago when they appeared on the cover of Rock Sound Magazine. Some hardcore rock fans dismissed them as a boyband best known as the support act of ONE DIRECTION, who were arguably the biggest boyband of the early 2010s, and for creating a song about American Apparel underwear that you couldn’t escape from every time you turned on the radio or were at the supermarket. But Rock Sound believed that the quartet from Sydney, Australia could turn dutiful teenage pop fans into curious listeners of rock music. Did 5 SECONDS OF SUMMER even classify as rock?

The answer is yes – to a certain extent. Formed in the Sydney suburbs, lead singer/guitarist Luke Hemmings, guitarist Michael Clifford, and bassist Calum Hood gained a substantial following on YouTube posting cover songs. Drummer Ashton Irwin joined the band after Clifford messaged him on Facebook as the band were going to play their first show and 200 people were going to be there. The reality was that the band ended up playing their first show at the Annadale Hotel – a pub in Sydney – on December 3, 2011 to only twelve people. But since that day, they’ve maintained the same line-up, working hard and growing an audience online and in person after extensive touring. After getting noticed by Louis Tomlinson from ONE DIRECTION in 2012, 5 SECONDS OF SUMMER were propelled to dizzying heights of fame after supporting ONE DIRECTION on their Take Me Home tour in 2013, and again in 2014 on the boyband’s Where We Are stadium tour.

Whilst 5 SECONDS OF SUMMER‘s breakout hit, She Looks So Perfect, might’ve been bubblegum pop, it’s also very guitar-driven, opening with a guitar note before leading into the catchiest ‘Heys’ ever put to music. Throughout their self-titled debut  album, there are elements of rock mixed in with sugary sweet pop, whether it is the paint-by-numbers pop-rock of Don’t Stop, or the guitar-driven Good Girls.

5 SECONDS OF SUMMER might not have been reinventing pop-rock by any means, but then again, the band were only three years into their career, having formed in late 2011, and three-quarters of the band were still in their teens at the time of this album’s release. Yet, there is also an undeniable charm about this album, with lyrics about wanting to escape town with a romantic partner (Kiss Me, Kiss Me), crushing on someone older (18), or wishing that you could commit to a relationship after a break-up (Everything I Didn’t Say). Admittedly, this is where the album falters sonically as the production is less inspiring and leans more into pop.

However, everything changes when Beside You comes on. This is a song that has been in 5 SEONDS OF SUMMER‘s discography since their debut 2012 EP Somewhere New. This re-recorded version breathes new life into the song, and it’s become a staple of their live shows and a fan-favourite. End Up Here is a fast-paced pop-rock song that namechecks both KURT COBAIN and Livin’ On A Prayer by BON JOVI. Whilst Long Way Home and Heartbreak Girl are mostly forgettable, the cheeky English Love Affair brings the album back up to speed. The standard edition ends with Amnesia, an acoustic break-up song that is easily one of the best written by the band.

Interestingly enough, the band’s more rockier sound is heard on the extended edition of the album. Social Casualty is a drum-heavy rock song that talks about leaving town to escape the past, Never Be is a mid-tempo song in the same vein as Beside You. Whilst Voodoo Doll is so overproduced that it threatens to burst your eardrums, the acoustic version of Don’t Stop is a good antidote. There is also a good foundation throughout this album that is further extended upon in their second album Sounds Good Feels Good (2015).

Critically, 5 SECONDS OF SUMMER‘s self-titled earned favourable reviews, with The Guardian calling the album ‘lyrical mischief’ and rating it 3/5, whereas AllMusic gave it 3.5/5 and said that the album is 'packed with immediately hummable melodies that anyone over 30 will probably feel slightly guilty for remembering'. The album sold 259,000, and hit Number One in fourteen countries, including America and Australia. It reached Number Two in the UK.

Overall, ten years on, it’s interesting to listen back to this album. Whilst the band only played four songs from the album on their most recent tour The 5 SECONDS OF SUMMER Show, and their third album Youngblood (2018) and fourth album Calm (2020) saw them swap their pop-rock sound for synth-pop, their fifth album 5SOS5 (2022) saw them return back to their roots in a mature way. Lyrically, their self-titled album is more risqué than anything that ONE DIRECTION ever released. Sonically, the album mostly works well thanks to the brilliant production by John Feldmann, although some of the songs do sound too clean cut and sometimes leans more into pop than rock. But this is an album that shows that 5 SECONDS OF SUMMER could break out of the shadow of the biggest boyband and shine on their own. They might’ve never reached the heights of fame ONE DIRECTION did, but this album did show a generation of teenage fans that there is more music out there than what’s on the radio.

So many things I want to say, so many words I want to write. I was never good with letters, Re. That was your specialty. You and your words, James and his sports, Peter with his persuasiveness and me with my arrogance. The four of us, young and bold, and I swear, we were infinite.

Then...well. I guess it happened. You know the story.

I wrote to you, you know. Those 12 years, slowly going mad, slowly losing my mind. There was no parchment, so I used the food wrappings, no ink, so I used my blood. I can remember it, hunched in a little ball in my tiny cell, one hand dripping blood as I wrote to you. I would skip my hand through the bars of my cell, slipping it into the mail cart that sometimes passed by. I broke a finger doing that - wrenching my hand through those iron shafts.

It’s funny. Azkaban is a blur, but every minute is preserved in crystal clarity.

Re. I didn’t do it. Please, I didn’t do it.

I think...I think it was you who got me through Azkaban. Not just you, but the idea of you, the idea that somewhere out there, you were safe. You were alive, whole, not rotting in some cell in Azkaban. One half of me was still breathing, still living, and it was more then I could hope for.

I still don’t know if you wrote to me. It keeps me up, sometimes.

I’ve never talked about it, have I? The memories are too painful, I think. Even writing them out hurts, makes me want to die. I still wake up, you know, my heart in my throat because what if this is a fever dream? What if none of it is real?

But then I roll over, and I see you, and everything is better again.

I think I knew, when I saw you. I think I knew when I first talked to you. I know I knew when we first kissed. I was so scared it would be a small thing, a passing fancy, a summer‘s kiss on a hot day.

I am so glad I was wrong.

It was you, Remus. Remus John Lupin. You were the one who got me through everything. Every trial, every drop of my blood, every Crucio and every burn and every slash, it was all worth it. I would do it all again, for you.

My one regret is us, Re. What we could have been. I wish...I wish we had more time. More time before...before everything happened.

And I realized that I haven’t said it yet, so I’ll say it now: I love you, Remus. I love you so much. Everything, from my mother to Azkaban to however I die, it was all worth it. Because I am so lucky, so damn lucky, that I was able to be part of your world, just for a little bit.

Take care of Harry for me. Don’t feel bad, Re. Live for me. Live for us.

It warmed Rhaenyra‘s heart to see Daemon so happy and content with his newborn son safely in his arm. It was rare to see him beam like this and it felt like the sun on a summer‘s day, warm and comforting all at once. She would have given him anything to make him smile that way and if a son was all that was needed for that, Rhaenyra would give him ten more. His place was with her, just like hers was with him and nothing could change that. His presence today had made her felt safe and protected, just like it always did and even though he wanted no thank for that, she was grateful anyway.

“I love my boys and I have seen my mother lose too many babies to ever be anything other than grateful for each healthy child I bear, boy or girl”, she said gently, because she didn’t want him, nor their son to think she would have rather had a girl. It mattered not, as long as the babe lived and was well. Their son was beautiful and she wouldn’t have wanted it any other way. Daemon’s kiss was returned with the same gentleness and she smiled into it. “And I love all of you more than anything”, she replied in a whisper, before resting back against him. She managed to stay awake a whole more minute, until her body claimed the rest it needed after such a turbulent morning.

“A wonderful name for a Prince”, Rhaenyra agreed and smiled warmly at her husband, who had chosen well. The children agree, but had a hard time prying themselves away from their new brother - or in Joffrey’s case their mother, so it took them a moment to shuffle out and close the door behind them. “Leave us”, she ordered the maids and midwife who had remained and only once they had left, she relaxed visibly, grateful to finally be alone with her husband and their babe. “You have a son”, Rhaenyra said softly and moved close enough so that she could rest her head against his shoulder. Nothing made her prouder than to know that she had given him what he had hoped for. Seeing him with his little boy was everything she had wanted, because for the first time, the father of one of her children could watch them grow without hiding. Aelyx would be surrounded by love from both parents and know who he belonged with, a luxury her older boys had not known.

“Thank you for staying with me. I know it was hard.” She leaned up to kiss her husband’s cheek, then looked back down at the perfect sleeping angel in his arms, whose chest was rising and falling gently as he slept, unimpressed by the world that he had just been born into. Her fourth child and son, yet so special to them, because he was theirs. Never had she imagined at 17 years old that one day she would gift Daemon a boy and be his wife. She had dreamed of it, but never imagined it possible. “I love you so much”, Rhaenyra whispered, lacing her fingers with his. “Both of you.”

Daemon grinned from ear to ear, clearly proud of himself, of Rhaenyra and of finally having a son. “I do,” he said as he turned his head and kissed the top of her head when she rested it on his shoulder. “You have given me everything a man could want,” he murmured as he looked down at Aelyx snuggled in his arm, huffing. “Everything that I could want…” He chuckled quietly, thumb brushing over the babe’s brow, tracing the feathery silver eyebrow. When Rhaenyra thanked him his brows furrowed, “You don’t have to thank me for that,” he shook his head. “I will be with you no matter how many children we have…I am your husband…the father of our children, my place, regardless of what other men believe, is with you.”

“The next one will be a girl,” he told her. “I know you have had nothing but sons…and you must long for a girl as I longed for him,” he gestured toward their son. “The next one will be your daughter,” he nodded. “And if it isn’t, we’ll keep practicing until it is.” Daemon turned his head and lifted his free hand, curling his finger under her chin and tilting Rhaenyra’s face to him. He leaned in and kissed her gently, “We love you….more than anything.”

I got a lovely kiss, and I gave her my heart in turn. Soon after that, a stranger arrived in town (but I did believe in love) I never knew what she saw in him (and I believed in love) She became quite interested in him – we were together, what should‘ve gone wrong? 

But soon after that, we ran out of our lovely luck. First snow fell softly and we weren‘t together any more (but I believed in love) because the strange man had come and he took her from me (nonetheless I believed in love) For a few short weeks she shone with lovely luck, then he left and said „I‘ll be back.“ 

She was still waiting when spring came. Grass turned green and she turned pale and wan (for she believed in love), because she cried at her window all day (Her love was much too big) Whether she thought of him when she finally died? I put a lovely red rose onto her grave. 

Tell me! What can we rely on in this world? Months I spent travelling the countryside (Nothing much else was left to me) and it was almost autumn when I finally found him (There stood her great love) 

I invited him for a drink or more, until night fell. He swaggered but he didn‘t suspect a dangerous thing – until I bound him up against a tree. The full moon rose, my knife was as cold as he, (Tell me, do you believe in love?) Do you remember, it wasn‘t that long ago? (This is the price you pay for love) I cut up the stranger, just a tiny bit and I took back my heart . 

Then I went home but I never kissed ever again (Because I don‘t believe in love any more) ever again (not in love any more) ever again, never ever again

”Who said I was painting you?“

”Oh please. I felt you watching me.“

”Ugh. Fine. I was sketching you. Want to see it?“

He nods and swims closer.

”Sure. I hope you got my good side.“

”Did I ever get your bad side?“

Bryce grins.

”No, but I don’t think I have a bad side.“

He comes out of the water, and I’m distracted by a water droplet sliding down his body for a second.

I feel my face heat up because I still get flustered around him even after all these years that we’ve been together.

So I try to focus my attention on his face and not his body.

He looks at my sketch. To which I’ve added some light watercolors. They’re faint, but they’re there.

Bryce looks taken aback by the sketch.

”Damn. Can I frame that? This is amazing.“

”You think so? It’s just a bit of lines with coal. And some watercolors. It’s nothing fancy.“

He puts his hands on his hips.

”Don’t be modest Lu. This is fantastic. I mean I always knew you’re talented but this? This is amazing work Lunes.“

I blush at his compliment. Still not used to Bryce complimenting my artwork.

”Thank you for saying that.“

I kiss him and he’s surprised at first but then he smiles and gently pulls me closer.

I groan but then I pull away.

”I’ve got to leave some kisses for later.“

Bryce pouts.

”No fair. You always stop when it gets interesting.“

”That’s because I don’t feel like getting carried away at Manoa Falls where I can easily slip and fall. I am still pregnant. There’s no way in hell I am risking our kids this way.“

He gets that smile where his eyes soften and his whole body relaxes.

”What?“

”I love it when you say our kids. Makes me look at you, not able to believe we did this. Our magic created this.“

”I’m pretty sure there’s no magic involved in sex. It was pretty much watching my ovulation, waiting and peeing on test stripes to see the words pregnant. But if it makes you feel better B let’s call it the magic of our bed.“

My snort turns into a full-on belly laugh.

”This is one of the reasons why I love you. You always make me laugh.“

”You done painting me like one of the French girls?“ I hear some water splashing and look up only to see Bryce smirking at me. His mouth moves and post out water like a fountain.

”Who said I was painting you?“

”Oh please. I felt you watching me.“

”Ugh. Fine. I was sketching you. Want to see it?“

He nods and swims closer.

”Sure. I hope you got my good side.“

”Did I ever get your bad side?“

Bryce grins.

”No, but I don’t think I have a bad side.“

He comes out of the water, and I’m distracted by a water droplet sliding down his body for a second.

I feel my face heat up because I still get flustered around him even after all these years that we’ve been together.

So I try to focus my attention on his face and not his body.

He looks at my sketch. To which I’ve added some light watercolors. They’re faint, but they’re there.

Bryce looks taken aback by the sketch.

”Damn. Can I frame that? This is amazing.“

”You think so? It’s just a bit of lines with coal. And some watercolors. It’s nothing fancy.“

He puts his hands on his hips.

”Don’t be modest Lu. This is fantastic. I mean I always knew you’re talented but this? This is amazing work Lunes.“

I blush at his compliment. Still not used to Bryce complimenting my artwork.

”Thank you for saying that.“

I kiss him and he’s surprised at first but then he smiles and gently pulls me closer.

I groan but then I pull away.

”I’ve got to leave some kisses for later.“

Bryce pouts.

”No fair. You always stop when it gets interesting.“

”That’s because I don’t feel like getting carried away at Manoa Falls where I can easily slip and fall. I am still pregnant. There’s no way in hell I am risking our kids this way.“

He gets that smile where his eyes soften and his whole body relaxes.

”What?“

”I love it when you say our kids. Makes me look at you, not able to believe we did this. Our magic created this.“

”I’m pretty sure there’s no magic involved in sex. It was pretty much watching my ovulation, waiting and peeing on test stripes to see the words pregnant. But if it makes you feel better B let’s call it the magic of our bed.“

”It was our bodies who created the magic, the bed was just a side piece.“

My snort turns into a full-on belly laugh.

”This is one of the reasons why I love you. You always make me laugh.“

Bryce smiles at me and we continue to spend a couple more hours at the waterfall before the air gets chilly and we decide we should head back.

I take my coal pencils and my watercolors, put them in my bag. I take Bryce’s outstretched hand.

Rays of sunshine, warming our backs as we walk back home hands intertwined.
