So it’s that time again. I’m doing a cleanup of my tag lists. To even say that I have more than one tag list is insane 😅 But I’m very grateful for that, I really am.
But before I do that I just wanted to take a quick moment and say thank you to everyone who’s ever given one of my stories a chance. For taking the time to leave a like, a reblog or a comment. It means the absolute world to me and I appreciate it 🩷🌸
So I will tag everyone I have on my current tag lists. So let me know if you want to be added, removed or even moved to a different tag list. There are absolutely no hard feelings 🥰 Tastes change and people have less time to read and reblog stuff (myself included).
Please reply by March 17th the latest. If you feel uncomfortable reblogging this post you can reach out through dms. That’s absolutely okay too 🥰
Lots of love
-PR
My current tag lists are down below and if you don’t see yourself on any of my lists but would like to be added don’t hesitate to reach out to me 🌸🥰

Once (5/5)
**This story takes place before it was revealed that Addison would come back/is alive **
Book: The Nanny Affair & Open Heart Crossover AU
Characters involved: Sam Dalton (M!MC), Ethan Ramsey (M!MC) and Vivian Dalton (F!MC)
Part V of V / Miniseries
Words: 1,900+
Rating: Mature
TW: Cancer, character death, mental illness
Summary: It’s weeks after Addis funeral. Sam and the boys settle in a bit, when Sam gets a surprise.
A/N: This is in honor of my friend Mira who died from ovarian cancer. May you rest in peace 💜
Sam
I was finished at work and got Carter to drive me home while reading through an email I got from Ethan.
I smile even though it’s been a month since Addie‘s funeral.
And it still feels so fresh in my mind.
Thankfully the boys don’t remember too much of that sad day, which turned into a less sad day with my new friend Ethan Ramsey and my brother Robin.
We got pretty drunk, but nobody bothered us. So we kept talking about everything and nothing.
I finished reading through the email that Ethan replied to and put my phone in my pocket to look outside the car window. Seeing all the streets and alleys pass me by while driving through New York.
I mentioned to Ethan, I’d love to go on a little family trip with the boys. Just to relax a bit. So it would be nice to spend some time in Boston. I even asked him if it would be right to visit him in Boston and bring along Mason and Mickey. He was excited and dare I say it a little smile played on his lips.
A contented smile tugs at my own lips.
We haven’t done any family trips in a long while. So this would be the perfect opportunity.
The car slows down and I realize we’ve arrived at the apartment complex.
Carter clears his throat as if nervous.
I smile softly at Carter. He’s a good man. I always respected him a lot.
”Thank you, Carter. Have a safe trip home.“
He turns around to look at me.
”You can take the day off if you’d like. I’ll drive home to my parent's place to pick up the boys.“
Carter smiles and nods.
”Very well Mr. Dalton. Have a safe trip.“
”Thank you, Carter.“
I get out of the car and walk towards the apartment. I pass the front desk. When Marvin‘s voice holds me back.
”Mr. Dalton!“
I stop and walk towards him.
He’s in his twenties and works here part-time to earn some money for his college tuition.
”Hello Marvin. How’s it going? How’s college?“
I ask as I shake his hand.
He grins and shoves his caramel-brown hair to the side. His green eyes lit up at my question.
”Oh thanks for asking Sir. It’s a lot. But I’ll have a study session with some friends later. Cramming for a test that’s coming up. I’d never thought college would be this difficult. But I like the challenge.“
I smile.
”That’s good to hear. Keep studying. And you’ll see it’ll pay up.“
I wink and he grins.
”Was there a package or something for me?“ I was thinking maybe it was something that Addie ordered.
I’ve had to unsubscribe from some of the magazines she subscribed to.
He scratches his head and then he seems to remember.
”Oh right. This was delivered for you this morning.“
He hands me a small mint-colored envelope.
With my name and home address written in beautiful calligraphy on it.
Curious who could be sending me a letter. Most people text or write an email these days.
I take the envelope and smile at Marvin.
”Thank you, Marvin. I’ll be heading upstairs and then I’ll be at my parent's to pick up the twins. So I won’t be at home later.“
Marvin grins at me.
”Sure thing Mr. Dalton. Have a safe trip. And send your love to your parents and your twins.“
I smile. A genuine one this time. One that wasn’t forced out of me because I was trying to bring joy to my face even though I didn’t feel too much of it in the last couple of weeks. The twins are keeping me sane and happy these days.
”I will. And good luck with your test. I know you’ll do just fine.“
He grins.
”Thanks, Mr. Dalton.“
I wave goodbye and Marvin takes a seat at the desk.
While I ride in the elevator I wonder who’s sent me a letter. I ponder over that question when I get into my apartment and get a change of clothes for something less office formal.
As I pick up my car keys I walk by the picture of Addison and hold up the picture frame.
We went skydiving that day.
That’s when the picture was taken. Her blonde hair is blowing into her face, but she‘s got the biggest smile on her face.
We had a lot of fun that day. Even though Addi was terrified at first, that fear settled pretty soon and then she screamed »I want to do this again.«
I grin at the memory all the while to my car and then on the drive over to my parent's house. I get there and my mom opens the wide doors.
”Sam. You made it.“
She hugs me and I lean down to hug her back.
She smiles and pats my cheek gently, making me feel as if I’m 12 again. Instead of 36. I smile at her and she gestures for me to come inside.
”Come on in. The twins just fell asleep after running around the garden all day. Playing action hero. Whatever that means.“ She grins and I chuckle.
”Sounds like Mason and Mickey.“
I walk in after my mom and she guides me to the garden where she set up a nice late lunch.
”Mom! You didn’t have to go to any trouble.“
She turns and grins, her steps not even faltering.
”I didn’t do this for you, Samuel. I was hungry too. So it was me being indulgent.“
I sit down in one of the comfy dark grey garden chairs. While I let the beautiful and warm sunshine caress my face.
Before my mom can sit down her phone rings and she sighs.
”Pray that this is your father. Who I hope has a good excuse for interrupting our lunch. Because I'm starving.“
I grin.
”Should I wait for you?“ I ask my mom who holds her phone to her ear.
She shakes her head. And walks away to take her call.
I dig in and remember how nostalgic this feels to have lunch at my parent's place.
Then something pokes me. That’s when I remembered I’d forgotten about the letter.
I put down my fork and took out the mint-colored envelope to open it and read what was inside.
When I open it I almost let it fall to the floor.
It’s a letter from Addi.
I lean back in my chair. Shivering despite the sunshine outside.
When I look at the letter again I start to read it.
Sam,
while I’m sitting here, letting the sunshine caress my face and just letting all thoughts drift away, enjoying the here and now, I wanted to tell you something.
No. I wanted to put it in writing. Because I feel that you need to read this for yourself.
Thank you. From the bottom of my heart. I know I can be difficult sometimes.
You laughed at that I know you did, don’t deny it.
I interrupt reading the letter to let out a surprised laugh. Then I continue reading Addis' letter. Even now that she’s gone she still makes me laugh.
You never let me walk alone. Always being there for me. Especially in those last months. For that, I will always be grateful.
The time I spent with you, was the most beautiful time of my life. I will always keep those memories close to my heart. From the moment we met, I knew. You are the one for me (cheesy I know, but it’s true).
Never letting me forget I’m more than a spoiled rich girl, who had it easy. Even though that’s not true at all. People just never bothered to take a peek behind the curtains.
You though? You were different, Sam.
I thought to myself back then, who’s this hot guy asking me out? What is it he wants? To get laid? Or is it more than just some hot sex? Gosh, this sounds weird even in writing. Please ignore my embarrassing moment.
Back to what I was trying to say.
You were so nice and charming. Flirting with me all the time. (You thought you were so subtle with those little gifts and compliments here and there? I’ll let you in on something. You weren’t. But I think I loved you already.)
These past few months…were…difficult, painful, and overwhelming. When I got diagnosed I…just sat there… in that doctor’s office not knowing what to do. Should I cry? Or should I scream? But I know I wouldn’t have solved anything by that.
Sam, I know you were trying your best with me, with Mickey and Mason. Your work? Trying to juggle all of it?
Shouldering everything on your own, never asking for help. And I just made it worse by being stubborn and difficult.
Please know that I’m sorry. I never meant to hurt you the way I most likely did. I hope that you can forgive me someday.
I’m not trying to guilt-trip you or wrestle out an apology.
I want you to forgive yourself. To stop being so hard on yourself.
You deserve everything good this world has to offer.
Don’t mourn me too long. (I was told widowers are hot) shake your head all you want, but you know it’s true.
I even went so far as to make you a little bucket list:
Live
Laugh
Kiss (and tell)
Be adventurous
Do things that are out of your comfort zone (and no I don’t mean just skydiving)
Hook up (even in weird places)
Get married (you always looked way too hot in a suit, though it looks better on the floor anyway)
Go to a strip club (Stop rolling your eyes at me)
Do crazy experiments with the boys :) (make a mess of the kitchen)
But most important of all don’t shut yourself off from love.
When it comes knocking, open the door. Let yourself be surprised. Don’t let me be the one to hold you back. You know I always wanted to see you happy.
I’ll be watching over my three favorite boys.
Always,
Addi
When I finished reading the letter I just sat there with tears in my eyes and held the letter close to my heart because I had the strange feeling I could conjure her into existence one more time by holding the letter as close to my heart as I could.
And just like that my pain and my sorrow were lifted a little.
It’s as if Addi knew all the right words to say to me. Knowing exactly what would help me move on a bit easier.
”Oh Addi. You surprise me as always. But there’s nothing to forgive. I promise I’ll take care of the boys and I might even find a nice woman who I can share my life and love with. Someday.“
I know that when the right person stumbles into my life I’ll know. And with Addis' blessing, I won’t feel like I’m cheating or disrespecting her memory.
I will always love and cherish what we had. But I know she’s in a better place. Free of any pain. Only filled with love and joy. Watching over us.
I get up from the table and look up at the sky, shielding my eyes from the glaring sun.
I know it sounds stupid, but it’s as if I can hear Addis's laughter and I smile. The pain in my heart lessened a bit.
And I know things will be okay. Mason, Mickey, and I will be alright.

Give me two characters and a word and I will write a <100 word drabble
Bryce & Luna - Waterfall
Summer‘sKiss
Book: Open Heart
Pairing: Luna Auclair (F!OC) x Bryce Lahela (M!MC)
Words: 400+
Rating: Fluff
Summary: Luna and Bryce enjoy a bit of alone time together by Manoa Falls.
A/N: Thanks so much for sending in the ask @cariantha 🩷🩷 It was short but I’ve had a lot of fun writing it 🥰🩷
Side note: I got inspired by the prompts Sea, Ocean - for Day 3 of @choicesseptemberchallenge2023
Summer‘s Kiss
Luna
”You done painting me like one of the French girls?“ I hear some water splashing and look up only to see Bryce smirking at me. His mouth moves and post out water like a fountain.
”Who said I was painting you?“
”Oh please. I felt you watching me.“
”Ugh. Fine. I was sketching you. Want to see it?“
He nods and swims closer.
”Sure. I hope you got my good side.“
”Did I ever get your bad side?“
Bryce grins.
”No, but I don’t think I have a bad side.“
He comes out of the water, and I’m distracted by a water droplet sliding down his body for a second.
I feel my face heat up because I still get flustered around him even after all these years that we’ve been together.
So I try to focus my attention on his face and not his body.
He looks at my sketch. To which I’ve added some light watercolors. They’re faint, but they’re there.
Bryce looks taken aback by the sketch.
”Damn. Can I frame that? This is amazing.“
”You think so? It’s just a bit of lines with coal. And some watercolors. It’s nothing fancy.“
He puts his hands on his hips.
”Don’t be modest Lu. This is fantastic. I mean I always knew you’re talented but this? This is amazing work Lunes.“
I blush at his compliment. Still not used to Bryce complimenting my artwork.
”Thank you for saying that.“
I kiss him and he’s surprised at first but then he smiles and gently pulls me closer.
I groan but then I pull away.
”I’ve got to leave some kisses for later.“
Bryce pouts.
”No fair. You always stop when it gets interesting.“
”That’s because I don’t feel like getting carried away at Manoa Falls where I can easily slip and fall. I am still pregnant. There’s no way in hell I am risking our kids this way.“
He gets that smile where his eyes soften and his whole body relaxes.
”What?“
”I love it when you say our kids. Makes me look at you, not able to believe we did this. Our magic created this.“
”I’m pretty sure there’s no magic involved in sex. It was pretty much watching my ovulation, waiting and peeing on test stripes to see the words pregnant. But if it makes you feel better B let’s call it the magic of our bed.“
”It was our bodies who created the magic, the bed was just a side piece.“
My snort turns into a full-on belly laugh.
”This is one of the reasons why I love you. You always make me laugh.“
Bryce smiles at me and we continue to spend a couple more hours at the waterfall before the air gets chilly and we decide we should head back.
I take my coal pencils and my watercolors, put them in my bag. I take Bryce’s outstretched hand.
Rays of sunshine, warming our backs as we walk back home hands intertwined.

Daddy Distress
Book: Open Heart Pairing: Dr. Ethan Ramsey x F!MC (Dr. Sawyer Brooks) Rating: General Warning: None Category: Fluff Word count: 1.3K Prompt: Based on this ask from @socalwriterbee. What would Ethan's reaction be to his son calling him by his name, instead of Daddy? Also for @choicesjunechallenge, I used the prompt: Father’s Day
Ethan could hear their happy voices as he entered the penthouse. Dropping his laptop bag on the floor, he called out to his family.
“Hey guys, I’m home!”
"Hi babe!"
It was a familiar greeting, one he heard almost every day, but not one he expected from his three year old son.
Sawyer broke out into uncontrollable laughter, tears rolling down her cheeks. Ethan couldn’t help cracking a smile too.
“What?!” Bending down he swooped his son into his arms and asked, “Babe? Why are you calling me babe?”
"Dat your name."
"Noooo, my name is Ethan."
"E-tan?"
"Yes."
A couple hours later it was time to put their toddler to bed.
"Time for bed, sweetie. Go get your cuddles from Daddy and say night-night. I'll go get your sippy cup."
Returning to the living room, Sawyer’s heart melted at the sight before her. Lying peacefully on her husband’s chest, their son nuzzled his chestnut waves into the crook of his father’s neck. Ethan’s large hand gently scratched the little one’s back while a much smaller hand absent-mindedly rubbed the grown man’s stubbled cheek.
As Sawyer came near, Ethan stood to pass him into his mother’s arms.
"Goodnight, buddy. I love you."
"Night, E-tan."
Sawyer giggled and Ethan rolled his eyes.
🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄
It was funny at first, how his mini-me addressed him by his first name. But after a couple days it was no longer amusing. Sawyer sensed the frustration when Ethan pinched the bridge of his nose as they exited their son’s room.
"What's the matter?"
"I just miss being called ‘Dad.' He's growing up so fast, but he's still my baby boy, Sawyer. And…and it just reminds me of my situation growing up. I started referring to Louise by her first name when I decided she was no longer worthy of the title ‘Mother.’ I… I don’t want that to ever be the case with my child.”
Sawyer wrapped her arms around his waist and squeezed him tight. "It won’t be, because you are an amazing dad. And I'm sorry, babe. I thought it was kind of cute and figured it was just a phase. I didn't realize it was bothering you this much, but I get it.”
“Thank you.”
“I'm home with him tomorrow. I'll try to talk to him and help him understand," she offered.
Peering through the open door, Ethan nodded, his bear cub already fast asleep.
Sliding a hand under his t-shirt and up his chest, "Come on, Daddy. Time for you to take your other baby to bed," Sawyer winked.
😏😏😏😏😏😏😏😏😏😏
“Are you ready to make a present for Daddy's special day tomorrow?” Sawyer asked, spreading out the craft supplies.
"I want to draw picture."
"He'll love that," she said, passing the paper and crayons. "Hey, I have a question. Do you know why I call you 'sweetie' sometimes?"
He shook his head.
"It's because I think you are soooo cute and I love you soooo much," she leaned over and squished a big kiss to his baby soft cheek.
"I lub you, Mama."
"Aw, thank you,” she held her hand to her heart. “Do you know why I call Daddy 'babe' sometimes? It's because I think he's cute too and I love him a lot. Like this much..." she spread her arms open wide.
"I lub him too! Dis big," he mimicked his mom with outstretched arms.
"Did you know that when you call him ‘Daddy’ he feels all that love?"
"Uh huh. Mama? When E-tan come home and play with me?"
Sawyer chuckled in defeat. She tried and will have to try again later.
😚😚😚😚😚😚😚😚😚😚
Shortly before bedtime Sawyer received a text from Ethan. A pileup on the freeway meant all hands on deck in the E.R. and that Daddy would be tied up at work for several more hours. The chaos in the E.R. a walk in the park compared to the bedlam Sawyer was about to experience putting her daddy’s boy to bed.
"Cuddle with Daddy!" he cried. "No! I want Daddy!"
"I know, sweetie. Daddy got stuck at work helping people with boo-boos.” Finally caving, “Do you want to come sleep with me until Daddy gets home?"
He nodded his head affirmatively, instantly calming down.
As Sawyer tucked him into the middle of the king size bed, she kissed each cheek. "I promise when you wake up in the morning, you can cuddle with Daddy. It's his special day, remember?” With a conspiring tone, Sawyer shared the plan for the next day. “We'll sneak attack Daddy with kisses and then you can surprise him with your picture, okay?"
It was after midnight when Ethan finally arrived home. He peeked into his son's room, which was empty, so he continued on to the master bedroom where he found a picture worthy scene. Sawyer was asleep on her back. A small human clung to her tightly, as if its life depended on it, with one arm around her neck and a leg draped across her stomach.
After a quick shower, Ethan changed into his pajamas. He gently extricated his son out of bed and into his arms, trying not to wake him or his mother.
"Hi," Sawyer spoke softly, stirred awake from the movement. "I was going to put him back in his own bed once he fell asleep, but I must have dozed off.”
"It’s okay. I'll take him," Ethan held the slumbering babe against his shoulder, "I need my cuddles."
“He was really missing you tonight."
😴😴😴😴😴😴😴😴😴😴
The next morning Sawyer woke early to make coffee and get breakfast started. Hearing the wrestling of sheets through the baby monitor, she went to coordinate with her co-conspirator.
"Gooood morrrrrning," Sawyer sang quietly as she knelt at the side of the Goldilocks-sized bed. As she tamed his bedhead, "What do you think? Is it time to attack the Tickle Monster?"
"Yes!"
Sawyer led them down the hall. Holding a finger to her lips, she playfully reminded him to be quiet as they tiptoed into the large bedroom. After a helpful boost onto her side of the bed, they crawled like cats to Ethan's side, ready to pounce.
"Get ready," she whispered.
Rolling Ethan onto his back, Sawyer straddled his waist and then held his hands at his sides.
"Huh," he responded groggily.
"Okay, now. It’s a slobber attack!" she declared.
The excited tot leaned over and placed wet smooches all over his dad’s face.
"Who dares to wake the Tickle Monster," a deep hoarse voice bellowed out. Breaking free from Sawyer's hold, Ethan sat up and locked the intruder in an embrace. "Looks like I have a prisoner," he said, tickling his son's ribs until high-pitched laughter filled the room.
As Ethan paused to let the captive catch his breath, Sawyer took advantage and leaned forward. Landing a quick but tender kiss to his lips, "Morning, babe. Happy Father's Day."
Climbing off the bed, Sawyer grabbed the artwork that had been drawn the day before.
"Sweetie, do you want to give the Tickle Monster his present?"
Taking the piece of paper from his mom, the youngster handed it to Ethan and settled into his lap.
"Oh wow. What do we have here?"
A little finger pointed to each scribbled blob as an enthusiastic voice explained, "Dis is me. And dat Mama. And dis is you!"
"I love it. Thank you.” Ethan kissed the top of his head. “I love you, buddy.”
"I lub you, Daddy. Dis big," he stretched his arms out.
Ethan cradled his son into a hug and looked up at Sawyer. She was smiling ear to ear as she mouthed, "Daddy." Ethan responded with a smile of his own.
"All right boys, I'm going to finish making Daddy's special pancake breakfast" she turned to leave.
"Rookie?" Ethan called, causing her to look over her shoulder, "Thank you."
“Pancakes?” Wiggling free from his dad’s hold, their pride and joy slid down the side of the bed. "Wait for me, Ookie! I help."
Facepalming, Sawyer shook her head with a smile then looked back at her laughing husband. “Babe, I think we officially have a Threenager.”

Aww this was too sweet and my heart. To hear Ethan say this. But I know both he and his little boy are going to be alright 🥰
"I lub you, Daddy. Dis big," he stretched his arms out.
My heart melted when I read this part 🥰
Thank you for writing this sweet story Cari 💙💙💙💙

I love that we both chose first base and Oh my gosh when I read this 😱
Only a kiss is an AMAZING STORY and one of my favorite of yours. Because it features Tatum & Ethan. I’m a total sucker for those two 🧡
"Yes, you are, Erikson, and…" He furrows his brows, "I want to know why you're being so quiet. With me."
That line »With me.« Ugh. That just kinda made me so sad, for Ethan’s sake.
"Enough." Tatum puts her hands up, backing away. "It was just a kiss, Ramsey." Watching a twinge of pain flash across his face, she quickly twirls on her heel and walks away.
I know Tatum is trying to gather her thoughts and try to deal with the fact she and Ethan kissed and now she’s trying to push him away or to forget the kiss ever happened 🙈
Normally quiet and reserved, Ethan found himself gravitating towards the friendly blonde. She wasn't just a pretty face; conversations with her were stimulating and hilarious. She was smart, someone who rivaled his own intelligence, but indulged in being goofy.
But for him, it was never a crush. Until it was.
I think they both knew it was way more than a simple crush 😅
What did he feel? Is it why she couldn't sleep last night? Is it why a surge of adrenaline pulses through her nerves when she hears his voice, hears his name?
Is this why she's now being quiet around him?
Ethan is good. He's a good guy, a good person who is meant to do so many good things… and he has damn good hair.
He has damn good hair. That made me smile. Because it’s such a cute comment or thought thrown in there 😍
Also as an aside i don’t think I remember that Ethan & Tate went to school together. How cool. So they’ve known each other for a long time 😍🥰
"Promise?" Tatum whispers, a smile blossoming on her mouth. Ethan nods as he tries to stifle a toothy grin. She exhales heavily, "Okay. I just… I don't want a mistake we made–"
"Whoa," he smirks. "I wasn't aware we made a mistake." Tatum playfully glares at him before he continues. "Do you think… the kiss… it was a–?"
She cuts him off, shaking her head. She sucks in her lips, tucking her thumbs into her pockets.
"Okay, good," Ethan glances at her lips before staring back into her eyes. "--because I want to do it again... If that's alright with you."
Ugh. This is such sweet and really vulnerable moment between Ethan & Tatum and I love that tender moment between them 🥰
It reminded me of the lyrics of Walls by the Jonas Brothers
Darling, you'd make the walls cry
Darling, you'd make the walls cry
'Cause time is a doorframe I want to go through
As long as it leads me back to you
And instantly, she is enraptured with the cool fire in his eyes, her heart squirming with a million butterflies, the flutters tickling her sides with unspeakable joy.
"Okay," she licks her lips, "maybe… just… one more time. Y'know? Since we're friends."
I could feel their blossoming love which is so beautifully encapsulated within your story 💚
Thanks for writing this amazingly beautiful story Em 💚💚💚💚
Book: Open Heart (pre-series)
Word Count: ~1466
Warning: fairly fluffy with tiny, tiny sprinkles of angst
A/N: This is my submission for @springfeverpitch. I have chosen first base. I hope y'all enjoy!
A/N 2: This is somewhat of a follow-up to the ficlet Only a Kiss. You do not have to read one to understand the other. Some characters and plot belong to our friends at Pixelberry. This was not beta'd; please excuse my errors.

"Why are you being so quiet?"
With her elbow on the table, Tatum sighs, her cheek resting in her palm. She glances up slowly, meeting Ethan's crystalline stare. "It's a library," she becomes expressionless, looking back at her books. "Besides… I'm trying to study–"
"You're acting weird."
She scoffs, a subtle blush crawling onto her cheeks. "I am not."
Ethan chuckles, biting his bottom lip. His attention flickers aimless to the bookstacks as he leans his chair back, drumming his fingers on the edge of the desk. "You're… a liar."
Tatum drops her pen. "Excuse me?" She glowers. "I am not."
"Yes, you are, Erikson, and…" He furrows his brows, "I want to know why you're being so quiet. With me."
"Maybe," she closes her books, "I don't have anything to say to you, Ramsey."
He exhales heavily. "Are you mad at me?"
"No," Tatum lets the words nonchalantly fall off her lips as she stands, packing up her bag. "I–I just… I mean, I need to–"
"We kissed," Ethan interrupts as Tatum's navy blue glare grows wild, scanning the library to ensure no one was listening. He lowers his voice. "We kissed, and… now you won't talk to me, and–"
"Ethan," Tatum shakes her head, pulling her satchel across her body and turning to leave. "I came to study with you. We have a big pharm check-off tomorrow, and–"
"You know what I think?" He grabs her arm, stopping her exit.
She sighs, slumping her shoulders. "Fine. What do you think–?"
"You liked it."
Tatum snickers sardonically, crossing her arms. "You're so full of–"
"I felt it." Ethan gently steps forward, cautiously tucking a blonde wisp of hair behind Tatum's ear. With a humorless chuckle, he locks his glare with hers. "I–I don't know what it is… but Tate, I… I can't stop thinking about–"
"Enough." Tatum puts her hands up, backing away. "It was just a kiss, Ramsey." Watching a twinge of pain flash across his face, she quickly twirls on her heel and walks away.
"You're nervous." Tatum pauses at Ethan's words, keeping her back to him. "You're nervous because… I think you felt it, too."
She sighs heavily, refusing to look at him as she disappears amongst the shelves.
Ethan and Tatum had quickly become close friends since starting medical school a couple of months ago. They met briefly during orientation, and then again when they were assigned to the same lab group.
After performing poorly on an assessment exam, Tatum insisted on helping Ethan practice for his make-up practicum. Somewhere amongst the laughing and innocent touching, their lips met tenderly. The room around them suddenly incinerated, the crackles of desire palpable between their bodies. But just as soon as the kiss started, it was over, and the two colleagues were left wide-eyed, staring at one another in complete shock. Breathless. And both were unable to admit they were hungry for more.
Tatum plunges herself deep into the library stacks. The brush of an ache pains her chest, her heartbeat erratic and uneasy. The look on Ethan's face… She glances over her shoulder, making sure he wasn't following her before nose-diving into a corner to hide. She grabs a book, pretending to read it as she nips at her nails. Although she turns the pages, she carefully peeps through the spaces between books to see if she can see him.
Truth is Tatum has been thinking about that kiss since it happened seventeen hours and fifty-two minutes ago. It was unexpected, and confusing, but hot and… dreamy. Just like in the movies. She loves hanging out with Ethan; he was a little rash at first, but she saw right through his attitude. He is witty, and actually quite empathic, not to mention he is pretty cute. He is the first guy in a long time that treated her with respect, who valued her opinion and intellect, someone who gave her credit because she's an equal–not just a woman.
But then they kissed. Kissed. Doesn't that change things? Tatum is happy the way things were–are; she loves being his friend. She loves sparring with him about grades and sharing snacks. She loves talking to him about, well, anything; and, they even started texting one another (but only after 9, when it's free).
She loves it when he laughs–shoot, when he actually smiles, he really can light up her whole day. Her favorite part is when he gets really tickled: his cheeks burn red, making his eyes blaze brilliantly sky blue as he scrunches up his freckled nose. All of those pearly whites show and…
Tatum's eyebrows lift high on her forehead as she paralyzes with panic. Oh my God. She snaps the book in her hand closed as she sits up straight. The corner of her lips begins to curl as her eyes dart aimlessly around the aisle.
How long has she had a crush on Ethan Ramsey?
Tatum hangs her head in her hands, coaching herself on how to breathe again. She can't like Ethan; he's her friend. Actually, he's one of her very best friends here at school. Maybe she's just confusing his kindness as something else.
But then he said… he said, 'he felt it, too.'
To Tatum, is he too good for someone like her?
Standing up, she drops the book onto the reshelving cart before moseying back to the student study area. The slow creep of crimson swirls up her neck when she sees Ethan, still sitting at the desk.
And he sees her. He stands, pushing his chair in before sauntering closer. But she holds her hands up, motioning for him to slow down. They stare at each other, their mouths teasing with honest smiles they try to conceal.
"Ethan, I–" Tatum crosses her arms, hugging her herself tightly. "I'm not nervous." He wrinkles his brows, but freezes when he notices the pools collecting in her glassy eyes. "I'm terrified."
A crooked smile forms on his face as he nods in understanding. He casually steps closer, first putting his large hands on her shoulders before pulling her into his chest for a hug. "Talk to me, Erikson."
She snorts, wiping at her tears. "You've become… my best friend here. And I don't want anything to happen to us–"
"Tatum… you mean…" Ethan stops himself suddenly, his mouth curving in embarrassment. "--I mean, your friendship means a lot to me. And I don't see anything changing that."
Tatum stills, nibbling on her bottom lip. Her cheeks paint with warmth as her eyes become enchanted with Ethan's full lips. Feeling the heat in the air, his breath tickling her nose, her eyes flicker shut as Ethan leans in, gently brushing his lips with hers.
"Are… we still friends?" He whispers, his nose softly tracing the tip of hers. She playfully snickers as he kisses her again: this time, the touch is longer, their mouths fitting together like a puzzle piece, innocent, but starved.
Ethan pulls away, his voice deepening into a gravel. "How about now?"
Tatum jokingly shoves him away, both of them giving into fits of giddy laughter. She stares at her feet, bouncing her toe nervously. Noticing their giggles falling silent, she takes a peek, glancing back up at Ethan.
And instantly, she is enraptured with the cool fire in his eyes, her heart squirming with a million butterflies, the flutters tickling her sides with unspeakable joy.
"Okay," she licks her lips, "maybe… just… one more time. Y'know? Since we're friends."

Two months ago…
Keiki
I was standing in front of a big oval mirror, putting on some lip gloss. The tube says coral crush. It’s my favorite.
My best friend Alexis, or Lexi for short, and I got ready at her place for a college party at the boy's fraternity house.
It’s the last party to ring in the semester finals.
Apparently there’s going to be plenty of hot guys and
»You should let go and get a groove on«
Lexis' words, not mine.
I chose a black satin halter-neck dress with a soft flaring skirt. It ended at the knees. I paired my dress with my favorite heeled ankle boots with pearl studs.
Making me a bit taller than my 5‘5 feet.
I can’t remember the last time I’ve felt this carefree and good. If my brother could see me now in my dress, I smiled.
Luna would just tell him to let me have fun, and he’d shake his head and yell ”Have fun, but please don’t get pregnant. I’m not ready to become an uncle yet.“
I love my brother, and now that we’ve repaired our relationship? He’s my rock. Any time I need advice, I can go to him.
I learned to trust him again and to forgave him, though we did come a long way to trusting each other once more.
It’s like Bryce said, ”Holding on to the past is painful. You should learn how to let go of the pain.“
I smiled at that. Because he’s right. Not that I’m going to tell him that. My brother's ego is already big enough, no need to inflate it even more.
I looked around Lexi's room for my little black and white striped purse. When I saw it, I took it and walked down the stairs, where Lexi was waiting for me.
”Looking good, Keiks.“ Lexi winks.
I rolled my eyes at her, and she laughed, snorted at the end.
She grinned at me and grabbed her car keys. When we’re inside the car, I wanted to put on a Britney Spears song.
But her next words stopped me.
”No Britney Spears songs. Last time we rode in the car together, you and Luna were singing Britney songs all the damn time. Please, no more Britney.“
I gasped.
”Really? I thought you liked her songs?“
”I lied. I didn’t want to say anything. Because you were having so much fun. But after listening to so many of her songs, I’ve gotta say it’s a no for me.“
I shook my head and grinned as I put on Shake it off by Taylor Swift.
Alexis laughed.
”That’s a song I approve of. This is why we’re best friends.“
I shook my head laughing.
The soft, salty breeze wafted through our hair and through the open sunroof of Lexi’s purple Jeep.
I lifted my hands up in the air as Alexis and I sang along to Taylor Swift's song – Shake it off.
A short drive later, we arrived at the party.
Alexis put the Jeep in park, turned off the ignition, and we got out.
Once outside, I stared at this huge beige painted house that sat on a freshly manicured lawn, surrounded by palm trees and hibiscus bushes. Making the night smell like a flower garden.
Several cars are already parked outside. People are milling on the lawn, drinking and laughing, when we arrived.
Looks like there wasn’t enough space to fit everyone.
Alexis and I exchanged a look and then just shrugged as we walked towards the entrance and almost got run over by a group of girls in neon bikinis.
Lexi and jumped out of the way.
So, this is what mayhem in the form of a college party looks like.
”Damn. Not what I expected.“ Lexi whistled.
I grinned as we got inside and saw people dancing everywhere on a makeshift dance floor.
One guy tried to grab my ass a mere second ago. I pushed his hand away. What a jerk.
If I wanted to be touched, I don’t want it to be some drunk person. Who won’t even remember tonight and is just trying to score.
”Lexi! Keiki!“ A redhead squealed. It’s Maren. She’s super nice. We've all hung out before. She’s followed by Trina, Malia and Ailani.
”So glad you guys came. It would’ve been a snooze fest without you.“
She gave me and Lexi a hug and then dragged us deeper into the crowd.
Lexi points to the stage where they’re setting up a karaoke station.
”Oh my god. A karaoke station! I’ll go and sign us up.“
I sighed and can’t even get a word out.
Maren and the others grin.
”Looks like it’s going to be karaoke night later,“ she grinned at all of us.
Lexi came back, grinning widely. Not revealing what song she chose. Making my nerves flutter in anticipation.
When it’s time for us to sing, my knees shook a little because I’m really not into big crowds. I never was.
A mic turned on and a tall guy with long black hair grinned at all of us. His blue eyes sparkled with joy.
”Alright. Alright. Looks like we’ve got our first round of beautiful ladies ready to sing a song. So, what are you going to serenade us with?“
He grinned at Lexi who winked at him.
”Shoutout to my Ex by Little Mix,“ she said.
”We’re singing what?“ I whispered loudly next to Lexi.
”Just relax. It’s a good song. Try to have a good time.“
”Lexi, I’m serious. Of all the songs you could’ve picked…“ I spluttered.
”Trust me Keiks, you need this cathartic moment.“ Lexi grinned softly at me.
My friends gave me an encouraging smile and nod. And some of my nerves settled a little.
As the first tunes came on I needed a second to get into the song, but once I did, all nerves just fell away, and I actually enjoyed myself together with my friends.
Koa
Frat parties aren’t really my scene. I prefer smaller gatherings to large ones.
I came because friends of mine tried to get me out of my funk.
Not only that, but I’ve been tired and restless lately, so they begged me to come to this party.
As my best friend Keanu pointed out earlier this morning
»Dude. Get out of your house. Stop studying. And just let loose, you need to get laid man.«
Subtle as always.
I chuckled to myself. I’m glad I have him by my side. He always knows when to kick my ass and get me out of my bubble.
So, here I am. At a party that’s already in full swing.
I squeezed all my 6‘2 feet through the crowd. As I tried to find some space where I can actually move around and not get elbowed in the ribs all the damn time.
As I get further into the crowd, I can see there’s a stage where some girls are singing karaoke.
About to walk away, I noticed one of the girls singing.
That dress! Flowing like a river and hugging all the right places.
Her brown hair flings back and forth as she’s singing a song by Little Mix?
My sister loves that band, that's how I even know the song.
I keep walking up to the front, so I’m closer to the stage. To have an unobstructed view of the girl who’s singing.
»I swear you'll never bring me down«
»Shout out to my ex, you're really« quite the man«
»You made my heart break and that made me who I am«
»Here's to my ex, hey, look at me now«
»Well, I'm I'm all the way up«
»I swear you'll never, you'll never bring me down«
The other girls are hugging each other as they sing what seem to be the last lines.
I don’t even notice the other girls. It’s as if they faded into the background.
Because I only have eyes for the brunette.
Who is she? And how come I haven’t seen her before on campus? Maybe because I live off-campus?
There’s something underneath that radiant smile of hers that is pulling me in.
Perhaps it’s the sadness with the last notes. It’s as if her brown eyes are saying, please don’t hurt my heart.
Because I can tell that this song means a lot more to her than to the other girls on stage.
I ask myself who hurt her like that? As if my heart pulls me closer to her only to say »You’re safe with me.«
Pulled out of my thoughts by my best friend's voice.
”So that was a good start. Thank you to Lexi, Keiki, Trina, Malia and Ailani for this wonderful performance. So, who’s up next?“ Keanu said, his blue eyes glowed, and he pushed his black hair out of his face.
I grinned when I saw my best friend on stage.
He pointed to each girl on stage. Then he pointed to the girl I was looking at.
Keiki. The name rolled off my tongue. It’s a beautiful name and it fits her.
I smiles as I made my way through the crowd. I really needed to find an opportunity to ask her out. Even if it’s just to dance tonight. I know I’ll regret it if I don’t.
If life has taught me anything? It’s to take chances. Even if it doesn’t work out the way you wanted it to. At least you can say you gave it your all.
Keiki
I got off-stage, and I knew I look med like a sweaty mess. I'm so thirsty, I knew I would rather not touch the alcohol they had to offer. I’m in need of water.
”I’m going to get me some water. You want some?“
Lexi shook her head.
”I’m good.“
”Alright. I’ll be right back.“
I navigated myself through the crowd as I tried to locate the kitchen in this giant house. It’s more like a maze than a house.
Meanwhile, I moved around drunk people, which is a sport in and of itself.
When I got to the kitchen, I push med the white wooden door open. Thankfully, there’s no one in here.
When I shut the door to the kitchen, the noise of the party was a little muted. Which gave me time to catch my breath.
I’m about to grab a bottle of water out of the fridge, when I heard the door opened again.
I turned around and did a double take when I saw the guy who walked in.
Cold air from the fridge blasted onto my face, as I’m holding on to the fridge door.
The water bottle I grabbed almost slipped out of my hands.
Where the hell did this guy come from? I haven’t seen him around. I had to look up, since he’s at least 6‘2 feet tall.
I swear, he looks like a real version of Ken.
Blond hair, bright sea green eyes, chiseled jaw.
He wore ripped jeans and a stark white shirt that stood out on his tan skin.
While I still stood there like an idiot. Unmoving. Mouth wide open and stared at him, like I’ve never seen a guy before, I try to mentally slap myself and to get out of my funk.
”Hi.“ He said as he walked closer.
Up close, his eyes looked as colorful as the green Severum fish. The rich green hue of the fish reminded me of this guy's eyes.
We’ve had a whole chapter on fish close to the end of the semester, so that’s why it’s so fresh in my mind.
”Hey.“ I waved nervously. Trying to smile, but it probably looked more like a grimace.
Can you say first awkward conversation? Get it together, Keiki. You’ve seen guys before.
But holy shit, none of them are like him.
”Did you try to escape the crowd too?“
I grinned, licking my lips.
”That obvious?“ I played with a strand of my hair. A nervous habit of mine. I’m usually not like one of those giggly girls, but for some reason he brings that out in me.
He walked over and reached around me to grab a water bottle from the still open fridge, his arm slightly brushed against my shoulder.
I got goosebumps all over my body, not just because of the cold air but because of skin on skin contact.
His cologne wafted towards me. Reminding me of the fresh and clean ocean.
He took a water bottle for himself and closed the fridge with a snap, making me pay attention to his next words.
”It’s not that. I wondered why a gorgeous girl like you would hide in here.“
I scoffed.
”I’m not hiding. I was getting some water for myself.“
”Sure.“
He nodded slowly and took a sip of his water.
Damn. Why does everything he does look sexy? Why can’t he be unattractive? It’d be easier not to like him.
He grinned as if he caught me staring at him. I blushed and looked away.
”I’m Koa by the way.“
”I’m Keiki.“
”Yeah, I saw you on stage. Great voice.“
”Oh…thank you. I was so nervous, but eventually, I had a lot of fun.“
I grinned at him, and he grinned back, two dimples showing in his cheeks.
Oh my god! I love dimples. I can’t stop looking at him. Feeling a magical pull.
But I tried to be careful, I didn’t want to fall for a pretty face. Only to get hurt again.
My spine stiffened and I leaned on the kitchen counter next to the fridge.
Hopefully, he didn’t notice anything about my posture changing.
The water bottle, half drunk, dangled from his fingertips.
”Do we have some classes together?“
He asked me and I thought back to my schedule. But I can't think of any classes I shared with Koa. I shook my head.
”I don’t think so. What’s your major?“ I asked.
”Marine biology.“
”Ah got it. That’s why our paths haven’t crossed. I’m studying to become a vet.“
He raised his eyebrows and smiled.
”No way! Damn that’s cool. But it’s a lot right?“
I nodded and laughed.
”It’s okay. The first semester was tough. Although I’m actually ahead of my reading schedule. And its fun. My brother is a surgeon. Becoming a vet felt more like my calling.“
He smiled softly, and it transformed his whole face from a pretty boy to a gorgeous guy.
I’m left speechless for a few seconds.
I smiled slowly and Koa grinned back.
”Smart and beautiful. Dangerous combo.“
My smile faded.
”If you’re trying to score, try again.“
His grin fell.
Oh, shit. I shouldn’t have said that. As I’m trying to scramble for another reply, his next words hit me.
”I was serious. I don’t give out compliments if I don't mean them.“
I raised my eyebrows.
”I…wasn’t trying to insinuate anything. It’s just… I’ve…“
He moved closer, making me want to move away. But I’m not able to escape his eyes. Which are full of understanding.
”No need to explain. I get it. When you’re ready, you can tell me. I can wait.“
”When?“
”You didn’t think I’d not ask you out, did you?“
”I could’ve said no. I just met you.“
He grinned.
”Something tells me you’re far too curious not to at least see if you like me.“
”Hmm. You think you’ve got me all figured out, don’t you?“
”I don’t think I’ve got you figured out at all. I don’t judge or assume something about others. I let time be the judge. People sometimes need time before they’re ready to share certain things, and that’s okay.“
A slow smile spread on my face, but I tried to tone it down.
”Let that smile spread. I’d love to see it.“
I grinned.
”There it is. You shouldn’t be scared to let others see it.“
My stomach took this moment to grumble loudly.
Koa laughed.
”Looks like someone is hungry.“
I turned beet red.
”Yeah. I…uh…forgot to eat earlier…“
He shook his head.
”We can’t have that. Let’s see what this kitchen has to offer. Unless the guys have eaten everything. Which wouldn’t surprise me.“
”Do you live here?“
”Would you judge me if I said yes?“
He turned his head and grinned at me.
”I wouldn’t. I was just curious.“ I said defensively.
”Relax. I’m just messing with you, Keiki. My best friend Keanu lives here. I live off-campus. I visit him from time to time here. But he usually hangs out at my place.“
”What about you?“
”I live off-campus too. I live with my brother and his fiancé.“
I took off my heels and hopped on the counter. My feet dangled in the air.
”Sounds good. And you save money by not having to pay for your own place.“
He opened the cupboards and got out a couple of bags and put them on the counter.
”Looks like I found our dinner. We have a fine selection of chips. Sour cream and onion, bacon. And salt and vinegar. And my personal favorite, Hawaiian Hurricane popcorn.“
I looked at him and when I saw the colorful bag, I almost sighed. It’s my favorite snack.
”You’re kidding? I love Hawaiian Hurricane popcorn. I always add…“
”…spicy cheese dip.“
We said at the same time and then laughed.
”Oh my god, I thought I was the only one who eats it this way. Can we check if there’s any?“
”Way ahead of you,“ he said.
He stepped closer to me until his jeans grazed against my bare legs. Making me shiver.
He handed me a jar of spicy cheese dip.
”God, I haven’t eaten this in a while.“ I sighed in bliss.
”I used to eat this so much my parents had to hide it from me.“
”My brother who eats his gross oatmeal tells me how Hurricane popcorn and spicy cheese dip is gross?“
I grinned as I dipped my popcorn into the cheese.
He stopped eating for a second to stare at me.
”You’re mocking oatmeal? Oatmeal is actually good for you.“
When I just stared at him.
”To each their own.“ He winked at me.
”Good answer.“
We kept eating popcorn until the whole bag is empty.
”Damn that was good.“ He said and I nodded. Licking my lips.
My lip gloss is completely gone by the time we’re finished.
His eyes wandered to my lips. And I felt my heart racing in my chest. My breath caught in my throat.
He moved closer until he’s only inches away from my lips. I can feel his breath on mine.
”You’ve got something right here…“
He wiped away some cheese dip from the corner of my mouth and licked it away.
”Thanks,“ my voice came out breathless.
”You’re welcome.“ His voice is deeper than before.
He brushed a strand of my hair and put it behind my left ear.
I don’t know who leaned in first, but I gripped him by his shirt collar to pull him closer to me.
He put his hands on my legs, leaning towards me.
At first, it was a feather-light touch of our lips.
His lips are soft and warm against mine. He tasted faintly of salt and cheese from the Hurricane popcorn.
I pushed my hand through his soft hair, pulling him closer.
As he let his hand wander to my neck. Cradling it. Deepening the kiss in turn.
We were both reaching for each other. Wanting more. I’ve never felt this way before.
Needing him like my next gulp of water.
We both break apart for what seems like hours.
We both breathed heavier and just tried to gather our thoughts.
When the silence stretched on for too long, he put both of his hands on my cheek and gave me a soft kiss on my temple.
Feeling a warmth spread through my stomach. A sensation I haven’t encountered yet. It’s as if I’m coming home.
And that’s when the panic settled in.
As if he felt it, he put a finger on my still swollen lips.
”You don’t have to say anything.“
I kept staring at him.
”We’ll figure out what we feel when we’re ready.“
I nodded at him. Not able to utter a word about what just happened.
Suddenly, the door opened and both Koa and I jumped at the sound. Making me grip his bicep.
When I saw it’s Lexi, I breathed out.
I thought it might be a drunk person mistaking the kitchen for the bathroom.
I hopped off from the counter as Lexi came inside. She saw me and Koa still close together.
Me, still gripping his bicep, blushing furiously. I let my hand fall.
A big grin spread across Lexi’s face.
”Oops, looks like I’ve interrupted you guys.“
Koa and I stared everywhere, just not at each other. Too caught up in what happened mere seconds ago.
Alexis broke the silence.
”I’m Alexis. Keiki‘s best friend. We come as a package deal.“
Koa chuckled, totally caught off guard.
”Nice to meet you. I’m Koa.“
He winces. Lexi must’ve tightened her grip. I shook my head, not able to hide my grin.
”Just to tell you. If you hurt Keiki. I’ll hurt you where it really hurts,“ she smiled sweetly.
Koa coughed.
”Alright. But I think Keiki can take care of herself. She seems like a strong girl.“ He said with a strong sense of confidence.
Both Alexis and I raised our eyebrows. Alexis slowly grinned as she turns to me.
”I like him, Keiks. He’s not stupid. And he’s nice to look at. You’ve got that whole Ken vibe going.“
Koa turned to me, and I just shrugged, still not able to meet his gaze. So, I looked at a point over his shoulder.
”Hey, don’t look at me,“ I retorted. But then I gave in and looked at him.
He smiled and his aquamarine eyes danced with delight.
He’s about to leave, but then turned back and got out his phone.
”Mind if we swap phone numbers?“
Alexis put her arm around my shoulders.
”Of course she doesn’t mind.“ I elbowed her and she laughed.
”What she said. I don’t mind.“
I untangled myself from Alexis and Koa and I exchanged numbers.
He grinned and he’s out the door.
When he’s gone. I turned to Lexi and we both squealed and danced around.
When the door opens again, we turned around only to see Koa who grabbed his water bottle next to the fridge.
”Forgot this. Nice dance moves, by the way, Keiki.“ He winked at me.
Alexis and I pressed our lips together. When he’s gone again we sat down on the kitchen floor and I leaned my head on Lexi’s shoulder.
”Oh my god. See? I told you that you‘d meet a hot guy. You should listen to me more often.“
”Yeah. You were. I won’t make a habit out of telling you that you were right. Otherwise, your ego will get ginormous.“
Lexi laughed and pulled her knees closer together. I put my hand around her knees and she squeezed my hand.
”According to my sister and brother, my ego is already big enough. But thanks, I appreciate hearing I helped you out. And who knows, maybe you can thank me at your wedding for bringing you two together.“
I snorted.
”Let’s not jump ahead. Koa and I just met. I don’t want to plan so far ahead.“
She turned her head and looked at me as if she picked up on something in my voice.
”What’s wrong Kei? Are you scared?“
I put my hand against my stomach, leaned against the cupboard and hugged my knees.
Not wanting to admit that, the way Dylan ended our relationship over a text, still haunts me.
The pain lessened. But all the memories, kisses and hugs we shared? Yeah, it’s still there and sneaks up on me from time to time.
I try not to think too much about Dylan. I’ve moved on. Though, I’ve been hesitant to go out with anyone.
It’s been over two years since I moved to Honolulu with my brother and his fiancé, Luna.
I’ve gotten better, being surrounded by family. But every time I meet a guy I actually like? I get scared he’ll hurt me like Dylan did.
So, that’s why I’m so hesitant to let anyone in. However I want to try to be more open-minded to new relationships.
From what I’ve seen so far, Koa seems really nice. And his kisses are fantastic.
Alexis bumps my shoulder, making me come out of my thoughts.
”Look! Just try to get to know him. Koa is a nice guy. I’ve heard good things about him. And if there’s no connection, then you’ll find someone even better.“
”What would I do without you?“ I said.
Alexis winked at me as she got up and offered me her hand.
”You’d make bad fashion choices.“
I grabbed her hand and stood up.
”Excuse you? I have an excellent fashion sense. Thank you very much.“
She put her head to the side, and together we walked outside the kitchen and joined our friends.
Singing and dancing the night away.
Koa
I’m still in a daze over the kiss with Keiki. Damn, I’m screwed. It’s as if we were trying to brand each other with our kisses.
Not that I’m complaining. I will never forget the way she tasted. And I know I won’t be able to get her out of my mind.
Before walking out of the house, I looked around for my phone and then I cursed. I must’ve left it in the kitchen. As I entered the kitchen, a slow grin spread across my face.
I looked at the counter and saw my phone sitting next to the fridge. I rolled my eyes at my stupidity. Someone could’ve walked in and taken it.
Before I left the kitchen, a little coral orange tube caught my eye.
When I moved closer I could see it’s a tube of lip gloss. I turned the lip gloss around and the back said »Coral Crush«
I grinned and without having to guess, I know it belongs to Keiki. I put it into the back of my jeans pocket.
I’m going to give it back to her when we see each other next time.
Hoping against hope she’ll give me a chance to show her that whoever hurt her the way he did, I’m not him.
I walked out of the house with a lighter spring in my steps.
When I looked up I saw the stars glistened in the midnight sky, and the scent of the hibiscus bushes made me smile.
I’m damn happy to have met Keiki, I have this strange feeling that I’m in for a couple of surprises. And honestly? I wouldn’t have it any other way.
A week later
Keiki
”Keiks? There’s a package for you,“ my brother said when he entered the kitchen.
I looked up from my phone.
”Thanks.“
I took it from him and when I opened it a small letter fluttered out, together with a tube of lip gloss.
I smiled as I saw my favorite lip gloss on the table.
I took the letter and read it, just to see who got me my favorite lip gloss.
Because I looked everywhere, but I must’ve lost it at the party.
Keiki,
you lost your lip gloss at the party. But since it was almost empty, I thought you might like a new tube of Coral Crush, so I brought you some.
Koa
I finish reading the letter and smile to myself. He spells trouble. But never did I want to be more in trouble than with Koa.

Part IV
The evening before Addie's funeral started with heavy rain, pelting mercilessly on the windows of our apartment in New York.
Then I correct myself. It's now my apartment, not ours, since Addie…is gone. I lean my head against the cold glass and just breathe out through my nose.
I can hear thunder rumbling in the distance as lightning illuminates the otherwise dark room with white and purple light.
I lift my head and look up.
With my hand in my pocket, I stared outside at the skyscrapers rising high in the air. City lights glow from down below.
I saw my reflection staring back at me in the glass of the window. Looking tired and forlorn. I feel like a piece of me died with Addie. We might’ve had our ups and downs but I love her. No matter what happened.
God, I miss her so damn much.
I look down at the glass of scotch I poured earlier. Losing count of how many drinks I’ve had tonight. Not giving two fucks if I’m hungover the next day. At least it’ll numb my pain for a little while.
I’m swirling the scotch in my hands that I poured myself a while ago. The ice cubes have already melted inside. Watering down the taste of the scotch.
I take a sip, as it smoothly runs down my throat burning its way down.
“Getting shit-faced. Is that how you’re spending your days now, Sam?“
I hear an angry voice. That voice belongs to my non-biological brother Robin. A pain-in-the-ass if you ask me.
Unbothered by his presence I take another sip and keep staring outside.
He comes to a stop next to me. I don’t even look at him. Just continue looking outside. Not seeing anything.
“Anybody home?“ He taunts me.
I glance at him out of the corner of my eye.
“What do you want?“ I ask not caring how I sound.
“Oh, so he speaks? That’s nice,“ he says sarcastically.
I roll my eyes at that. Robin has never been very subtle. I always admired that about him in a way. He’s passionate and doesn’t hold back when it comes to the people he loves.
“Again what do you want?“ I just want him gone and to be left alone. So that I can finish my drink in peace.
That’s when my drink is yanked out of my hand.
“The hell, Rob?“ I glare at him. My voice is dangerously low. But he either ignores that or doesn’t care. I’d say it’s a bit of both.
“What is wrong with you? Addi died and all you seem to care about is getting shit-faced?“ He almost shouts at me. His fists clenched at his sides, anger rolling off of him in waves.
“Do I look drunk to you? No? Then kindly fuck off.“
I’m holding out my hand for him to pass me my glass.
He just scoffs.
“You know what? No. I’m not just going to leave you here. So that you can wallow in misery,“ he pauses for a second, before continuing.
I raise my eyebrows at him. Not care why he’s here. I love him, but right now? I want to get drunk. Not having a heart-to-heart.
Robin continues unperturbed.
“As for why I’m here. Mom called me. Since you don’t know what a phone is these days and how it works. She asked me to check in on you. You ghosted everyone. Our parents are worried. So are Mickey and Mason. Remember? Your kids? Whose mom died?“ He punches the bridge of his nose and breathes out a deep sigh.
My breath hitches at the mention of my boys. But I don't want to talk to Robin, because once I start? I won’t be able to finish. Because I know I’ll break down and weep like a little baby.
So I school my features.
“Our parents? You mean my parents? We're not blood-related, Robin.“
I know that was a low blow. But I just want him gone. If there is no other way than hurting him so that he leaves? So be it.
He inhales sharply at my words. But then a look of understanding and softness enters his espresso-colored eyes.
“I know what you’re trying to do, Sam. You’re trying to hurt me with words so that I’ll leave. Nice try,“ he just looks at me.
“Who says I was lying?“ I raise an eyebrow and bite my inner cheek.
“Really? What would Addi say if she could see you now? Drinking? Being an ass? Pushing family away? That’s not you Sam!“ He sighs.
“I’m not in the mood for a fight.“
I say in response.
He shakes his head at me.
“Color me surprised. I thought for sure, that’s where you were going with your little insults. But what do I know? I’m your not-brother who still gives a damn about you. Even though you act like a complete asshole right now,“ he says.
“Just because I don’t react the way you want me to, doesn’t mean you can just come in here and belittle me. I love Addi. Not one minute goes by that I don’t miss her. The hardest part was to know she won’t make it. Do you know what that’s like?“
My voice is rising. And Robin sighs in turn.
“No, I don’t know. But don’t shut us out, Sam. We all love and care about you and the twins. Let us help. Let us carry some of the burden for you. You’re not alone,“ he places a gentle hand on my shoulder. I don’t instantly shake it off.
Seeming to consider his words carefully.
“Look, Sam. Nobody is trying to make this harder on you than it already is. We’re all just trying to process this and find a way to move on. I can’t imagine how hard this must be for you. Everything you’ve been going through since Addi was diagnosed with cancer. We all loved Addi. And now she’s…gone,“ he sighs at the last word.
I let my head fall overcome with suppressed emotions.
“I was trying to numb the pain. That’s why I was drinking. I was halfway there when you barged in.“
I chuckle but it sounds bitter and sad.
“You could’ve at least offered me a drink. No one should drink alone. Come on.“
Robin attempts a smile, that’s more of a half-smirk. But a small smile creeps into the corner of my mouth and stays there.
He pats my back and I look at my brother. Who is a friend whom I’ve been a dick to, just because I needed to lash out at someone.
Because I’m angry, sad, frustrated and just so fucking tired. As if all these months of pain are pouring out on me. Like heavy rain.
This little cloud of swirling emotions is spinning through me and I don’t know what to do. Maybe he’s right. Maybe I should let my family help and carry some of the burden.
I sigh again. So much for thinking that drinking was a good start.
Maybe a vacation or going someplace that doesn’t remind me of Addi would be better instead.
Just to relax and spend time with my boys who are grieving but don’t understand what the fuck is happening because they’re too young.
As Robin and I sit down he looks at me, as if he knows exactly what’s going on inside my head.
“Let’s get drunk,“ he waggled his eyebrows and moved into the living room to find the bottle of scotch I opened earlier. Or was it yesterday? I laugh silently. Not even knowing where yesterday went.
“Aren’t we a little too old for hangovers?“
“Speak for yourself, old man! I don’t have hangovers,“ he gets himself a glass from the cabinet and pours each of us a drink. I watch as the amber-colored liquid fills our glasses.
Clinking our glasses together. We both take a sip.
“This is some good stuff.“ Robin whistles.
I shrug.
“Did you really expect me to get drunk on some cheap liquor? Who do you take me for?“
“God you’re such a snob. But at least I know where to find the good stuff if I ever need a stiff drink,“ he smiles to himself.
We drink in silence. Consumed by our private thoughts.
Robin clears his throat. I look up. He wets his lips looking away. He’s nervous about something.
“Just say it.“
“I heard Addis' parents are coming to the funeral. You never really talk about them. Is there bad blood between you guys?“
He almost whispers the question, as if he’s afraid of how I would take the question.
I take another gulp before answering.
“Not bad blood in and of itself. We just never got along, that’s all.“
Not willing to say more. Robin doesn’t seem convinced.
“There’s got to be more to the story,“ he pushes.
I put my glass on the table immediately, missing its weight in my hands. I lean back in the chair.
“There’s not much to tell. Ever since Addie introduced us there’s been tension. Why? I don’t know. I‘d guess they thought I wasn’t good enough for their daughter.“
“What? You? Not good enough for their daughter? What gives?“ He asked.
“All I know is they come from old money and they probably had someone else in mind for Addie. But she went and married me. Which pissed them off. We never had a peaceful dinner together. One that didn’t end in an argument. They never visited us or gave a damn about Addie. And when Mickey and Mason were born…“
Thinking back to that day. Holding them both in my arms. Those tiny and fragile little humans. My heart is swelling with love.
I knew then and there that I would always love them. Never be their cause for doubt. Yes, I might be strict sometimes. But only because I love them and don’t want to lose them. Like I lost Addi. I take another sip from my drink.
Those boys? They are the most precious gift of all time.
Seeing their smiles every day and being excited about those god-awful experiments? Addie always encouraged them in that regard. I’m smiling to myself lost in thought.
I haven’t noticed the silence that was stretching for far too long.
When Robin’s voice brought me back.
“What’s that smile for?“ He points in my direction with his glass.
“I was thinking of the day when Mickey and Mason were born. And how happy I felt while I was holding them. Being scared of what to do, you know? Then they opened their eyes and just looked at me. It was love at first sight. Holding your child in your arms, it’s incomparable,“ smiling fondly at those memories.
“I’ll take your word for it brother,“ he sips from his drink while glancing down at his watch. He notices my stare.
“Hot date?“ I ask curiously.
He almost chokes on his sip.
“Yeah, right.“
I smirk.
“Don’t tell me you’re losing your touch?“
“No. I’m just busy.“ That is all he says.
I arch an eyebrow at that explanation.
“Right. Of course.“
He sighs loudly.
“Don’t be smug, okay?“
I hold up my hands, smiling.
“I’m just looking for something different. So far I haven’t found it,“ he looks into his glass as if it was holding all the answers.
He gets up from his seat and puts down the glass.
“I should be going. I am busy.“
It looks like he wants to say more. Opening and closing his mouth.
He continues in a soft voice. One I don’t hear often.
“Don’t push the people who care about you away. You don’t have to go through it alone. We’re all here for you. Whatever you need. Just don’t shut us out. Please. The twins can’t lose another person. Neither can we. We love you Sam,“ he smiles softly.
About to leave, when I get up and give him a tight hug.
He didn't expect it and stood still for a moment. Then he relaxes and returns the hug.
“Thank you.“ I whisper.
“I’m sorry about earlier…You are my brother, even if not by blood. Family don’t end with blood.“
He takes a step back and just stares at me.
“Are you quoting Bobby Singer from Supernatural?“ he asks, grinning at me.
I smack him on the arm.
“Don’t make me feel weird about this.“ I say.
He throws his head back and laughs out loud.
“Oh my god. Samuel Alexander Dalton. You watch Supernatural?“
I scoff embarrassed.
“So what? A lot of people do. There’s no shame in that. And why are you giving me shit for that? I know Addie got you hooked on it too,“ I flushed beet red.
“What are you talking about?“ He’s trying to deflect the question.
“What am I talking about? When you both had the flu and were sick for almost a week you sat down and watched seasons 1 through 11. Nobody was allowed to talk or say anything about Sam or Dean. Also, Addie told me that you made some friends online and discussed the episodes with others.“
His cheeks are flaming red and he’s trying to flee.
“Okay, I admit it. I love the show. It has great dialogue and Dean and Sam are hilarious. Happy?“
He throws up his hands in the air and asks impatiently.
“Very.“ I smile.
He rolls his eyes at that.
“Oh and Rob?“ I can’t help saying one last thing, as he’s waiting for the elevator to take him downstairs.
“Yeah?“ He turns around expectantly.
I laugh delightedly.
“SupernaturalFan_67? Does that name sound familiar to you?“ I ask jokingly.
“How…do…you…When…What?“ He stammers.
Tapping his foot impatiently on the marble floor as he’s waiting for the elevator.
He’s clicking the elevator button several times for good measure.
“You left your laptop open when you visited that one time, and Addi saw it and showed it to me. We just couldn’t resist.“
I bite my lip to not burst out laughing when I see the dirty look he gives me.
“That’s why those weird comments appeared. You two made those,“ he points an accusing finger at me.
He sighs.
”I thought I was being hacked. Damn, you’re such a dick, Sam,“ he says as he gets into the elevator.
I wink at him and he rolls his eyes but smiles.
He’s mumbling something under his breath which makes me laugh even harder.
Even after the doors close I’m still laughing.
When I sit down again to enjoy the rest of my remaining drink. I see an old record peeking out from the table.
When I lean forward to see which one it is. I see it’s one of Addie's favorites.
Linda Ronstadt - Long, Long time.
Ah. That woman? Such a gifted singer. We’ve always loved to dance to her songs. Whenever we had some alone time.
With some new vigor, I put the record on and the first tunes of the song play out.
»Love will abide«
»Take things in stride«
»Sounds like good advice«
»But there's no one at my side«
»And time washes clean love's wounds unseen«
»That's what someone told me«
»But I don't know what it means«
»'Cause I've done everything I know«
»To try and make you mine«
»And I think I'm gonna love you«
»For a long long time«
»Caught in my fears«
»Blinking back the tears«
»I can't say you hurt me«
»When you never let me near«
»And I never drew one response from you«
»All the while you fell all over girls you never knew«
»'Cause I've done everything I know«
»To try and make you mine«
»And I think it's gonna hurt me«
»For a long long time«
»Wait for the day you'll go away«
»Knowing that you warned me«
»Of the price, I'd have to pay«
»And life's full of flaws«
»Who knows the cause?«
»Living in the memory of a love that never was«
»'Cause I've done everything I know«
»To try and change your mind«
»And I think I'm gonna miss you«
»For a long long time«
Letting the music and lyrics wash over me. Healing some of the fissures that have opened up. Somehow I feel closer to her with every passing note.
Making me smile even though Addie’s no longer here. But her memory will always stay in my heart, and in the crinkle around my eyes.
Telling the story of how we shared a bond and a love for each other that can’t just be broken. The memories we made? They will never fade.
I fell asleep to the sounds of Linda’s song - Long, Long time.
The Next Day…
The funeral happened in a blur. I don’t even know how. It felt as if I was wading through water.
Not seeing anyone or noticing anything. The boys are with my parents. I asked them if they could watch them.
I don’t want them to be exposed to any gossip. There are some at any funeral.
At least at Addis's funeral I can try and control the narrative a little.
They’re going through enough, they don’t need to hear people talk shit about Addie.
I move through the crowd in the living room and smile politely as I make my way toward the table with drinks.
“I’m not a big fan of people either. I hate making small talk. It’s completely unnecessary. Either say what you have to say or shut up.“
A deep voice rumbles next to me, as I’m trying to pick my poison from the array of alcohol.
I turn around slightly, and my eyes widen in shock at seeing Dr. Ramsey standing next to me.
In an all-black tuxedo, a golden square pocket peaking out.
I gape like a fish with my mouth hanging open.
“Surprised to see me? Yeah me too.“
Ethan replies, already nursing a drink. Though when I look down it looks just like plain water.
I look up and raise a questioning eyebrow.
“Dr. Ramsey I haven’t expected to see you. Least of all at my wife’s funeral.“
I’m still staring at him like I’m seeing him for the first time.
He winces at that.
“Just call me Ethan.“
I exhale.
“Alright, Ethan. But then you should call me Sam. Mr. Dalton sounds…“
A corner of his mouth lifts into a smirk.
“Old?“
Now it’s my turn to wince.
“I wouldn’t go that far. Though I feel old today.“ My shoulders droop.
He pats my shoulder encouragingly.
“I know what you mean.“
I nod in thanks.
“Thank you for coming. We’re literal strangers, apart from seeing each other at the hospital that one time….I….mean you didn’t have to come out here. But I appreciate it nonetheless.“ I smile at him.
He nods in the direction of the library. Which is closed off to visitors. Family only.
“Of course. So should we escape the crowd? I think I was promised a drink. Shall we?“ He asked me.
I slowly nod in agreement and lead the way to my family's study.
Once inside I softly close the door. I don’t want anyone overhearing a private conversation. And then later gossiping about it. I’ve had enough of those already.
What is it with certain people who find joy in other people’s misery? I will never understand that.
“They’re worse than the interns.“ Ethan comments.
I look at him in confusion.
He smiles.
“You were mumbling about people gossiping,“ he says.
I close my eyes for a brief second and draw in a long breath. Letting my head fall on the leather couch and just letting the cold fabric cool down the fire in my blood.
“I guess I’m just wondering about how it can bring people joy to gossip. At a funeral, no less. We’re here to mourn Addi and say goodbye. Not to spread rumors and talk bad behind someone’s back, who can’t even defend herself anymore.“
Getting frustrated and angry, I’m trying to rain my emotions in, since I don’t want to explode. Then people would have something to talk about.
I shudder. I don’t even want to think about that. The reactions about my outburst would be awful. My parents would never shut up about it.
Ethan’s voice brings me back to the here and now.
“You know, people will always talk. No matter what you do. I work at a hospital, where gossip spreads like wildfire. Trust me. I’m still amazed I haven’t gone and thrown someone out the window.“
He grunts as he leans into another one of the leather armchairs. Unbuttoning the first few buttons of his shirt.
I laughed for the first time today, and I’ve got to admit it feels freeing. Not being judged for smiling or laughing, because it’s “inappropriate“. Fuck them.
Addi wouldn’t mind if I laughed today. She’d welcome it.
She’d say ”If someone laughed at some lame joke I made? Yeah, I’d call that a win. Funerals shouldn’t feel like a goodbye. They should feel like a celebration of the person who’s now in a better place.“
She’d be right. So screw them. How do they know how I feel? I grin.
I get up and turn to the glass cabinet in front of me. I get two glasses out and pour each of us a drink.
Ethan takes a sip while I watch his reaction.
“Not bad Dalton. Not bad,“ he takes another sip, this time a bigger one.
“Not bad? I’d hope this was better than not bad. But I’ll take it.“
We sit in silence. But it’s not uncomfortable. Quite the opposite. I lean my head back again and just close my eyes. My glass dangles from my fingers.
Ethan clears his throat slightly.
“So I take it from us drinking at…“
I hear the rustling of fabric, and then “…11 in the morning that we both needed a hit?“
I open my eyes and put my glass down.
“You can say that again. This whole day has been a nightmare.“
I rub my eyes.
“Care to elaborate?“ he asks.
“I don’t know where to start…“ I drift off.
He shrugs his shoulders.
“At the beginning would be good.“ I laugh despite myself.
“Yeah I guess so.“
I draw in a breath, readying myself.
“Addi was diagnosed with ovarian cancer a few months back. I still don’t understand how it could’ve gotten to stage 4 without us not noticing anything. It didn’t make any sense. That’s when the fighting started. She…just wasn’t taking care of herself. I tried cutting back at work. So that I could be there for her and the kids, but all it did was make her angrier. She said she doesn’t need a babysitter. She stopped listening to her doctors. She didn’t spend as much time with the kids anymore. I’m not trying to paint her as a bad mom or person. It’s just…“ I trail off.
“You were worried about her,“ he says matter of factly.
“Yeah. Of course, I was.“
I take another sip, the burning sensation a welcoming feeling.
“What about her parents? I didn’t see them.“ He inquires.
“They weren’t really on speaking terms. They barely visited. Mickey and Mason didn’t like spending much time with them. One time Mason said how they always looked down on them. I mean they’re little kids for god's sake.
He nods in understanding. He’s about to say something, when we both hear the door opening and Robin appears in the doorframe. Looking from me to Ethan he just sighs, shakes his head, closes the door, and takes a seat.
“So what are we drinking to today, Sam?“ He asks no one in particular. And then looks in Ethan's direction.
“You’re new,“ he eyes him suspiciously.
“Nice to meet you too. And I was new 36 years ago. Thank you.“ Ethan mutters sarcastically.
Robin looks at me.
“Where did you find him? Is he your new drinking buddy? I thought that was my job?“ He pouts a little. Which makes him look ridiculous.
“I didn’t find him. He’s a doctor at Edenbrook hospital in Boston,“ I reply to his question.
“You still haven’t answered my question,“ he replies.
Ethan and I share a look. He points between us.
“What’s that look for?“ He asks.
“Ethan was there the day Addi died,“ I explained slowly to Robin.
I can see a mix of emotions in Robin's eyes. With a heavy sigh, he plops himself onto the leather sofa. Crossing his legs.
“I guess that warrants an excuse for a drink, pour me one would you?“ Robin asks and I can’t resist teasing a little bit.
“What am I your servant?“ I say.
Robin laughs at me and says.
“You’d make a nice one,“ and holds his hand out for a drink, but I’ll humor him for today. I get up and get him a drink.
We all hang onto our own thoughts and drink late into the night in my family's study.
I’m glad I have my brother by my side and my new friend or as Robin called him “my drinking buddy“.
I smile as we keep talking and exchanging jabs at each other‘s expense. All in good fun of course.
Life doesn’t seem so bad when you have friends and you’ve won a new drinking buddy over.
The smile is still in place as we go home. I ask Robin and Ethan if they want to stay at my parent's place. There are enough rooms to go around.
They both agree and we all head upstairs to catch some sleep.
Because tomorrow is a fresh start into a better day, with my family by my side.
