Sugarcane Farmers in Bungoma County protests to deployment of NYS to the Nzoia Sugar factory's nucleus farms.
The farmers, who supply sugarcane to the factory, fear that the move will deny them the opportunity to work on the farms. They have appealed to both national and regional leaders to intervene and resolve the matter. The farmers’ representatives spoke during a forum in the Kand constituency. They said that the deployment of NYS personnel is unfair to the locals, who have been working on the farms…

The Soap Festival & Soap's Symbolism in Gilded Helianthia | Headcanons
(I wrote a short one-shot based around this! You can read it on https://archiveofourown.org/works/52711750)
Hello! First, I want to say this was inspired off of @.deathricedrawn's (now scrapped) idea for Empires Festivals!! She came up with it back in 2022, I think? Back when I was a Twitter user.
So. What is the Soap Festival? It's a New Year's Celebration held in Gilded Helianthia that lasts 3 days; the first day is made to gather ingredients, such as glowberries and lye and oil and honey and whatever one wants to add to their soap. On the second day, New Year’s Eve, everyone makes two bars of soap with their ingredients in the morning, and leave them to set, while they enjoy fireworks, festivities, and fresh fruit in the afternoon and night. Many also take this opportunity to clean their homes and fields for the new year, as the Soap Festival is about cleansing the old year and leaving room for the new to flourish. The New Year arrives, and in the morning, citizens of Helianthia will wrap one bar in string and paper to gift to someone they love and cherish, as good luck for the coming year, and take the other bar and bury it in their fields, using it as fertilizer. Many will bury it near a special tree or crop, in hopes that it’ll be blessed.
In my own version of Gilded Helianthia, soap has a deep meaning behind it. Before Helianthia was given it’s name, back when it was a Smallholding of people wishing for freedom, the natives to the land had a tradition of hand making soap and washing each other as an act of respect, intimacy, and love. People would gift each other these handmade soaps with the belief that they would purify and heal the person that receives them. Nowadays, soap bars are easier to come by, but gifting someone soap in Helianthia still holds that meaning behind it; especially if one takes the time to make it themselves. Soap is given to children when they begin to come-of-age; as a housewarming gift to new neighbors; for people who are about to take on a new chapter of their life, or simply for good luck. It’s a way to say, “may your sums and your pieces be enough to make you whole”.
That’s the jist of it, anyway!

Apni Mandi Farmers Market, 41081 Fremont Blvd, Fremont, CA 94538
Tumblr media
Apni Mandi is the rebranded Apna Bazaar. It’s a full-sized Indian supermarket.
Some of the fresh produce is placed outside in front the store. They had a wide variety of fruits and veggies, more so than the average Indian supermarket, and prices were reasonable. I spotted some Chinese vegetables too, like Napa cabbage and Chinese bittermelon. I didn’t see organic produce.
The interior felt like a warehouse store, no frills but stocked with an impressive selection of spices, rice, condiments, nuts, beans, snacks, ice cream, dairy products, tea, halal meat (but no butcher counter), etc. They have baked goods but no in-store bakery.
One side had items for the home, including pots, pans, and dosa griddles, small appliances, dishes, drinking glasses, incense, incense holders, home temples (so many of these), statues, bracelets, etc.
They had a fresh sugarcane juice stand, fresh paan counter, and pani puri. But none of these were open in the morning.
Apni Mandi shares a large parking lot with other businesses, most of which are Indian (including several restaurants). 4 out of 5 stars

India tells US about sending 8,606 tons of raw cane sugar. This is under the TRQ rules.
On Wednesday, the government said they are sending 8,606 tons of raw sugar to the US as part of the TRQ (tariff-rate quota) plan for the money year 2024. Shipments under the TRQ pay less customs fees. When the limit is hit, more costly tax is used on extra imports.
Tumblr media
The DGFT announced that 8,606 MTRV of raw cane sugar will be sent to the USA under the TRQ plan from October 1, 2023 to September 30, 2024.
Kisan App
India, the world's second-biggest maker and biggest user of sugar, also has a special agreement for sugar export with the European Union. The DGFT said that the quota will be handled by the Agriculture and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA).
Krishi App
In July 2023, the United States Trade Representative (USTR) declared how much sugar can be imported from India and other countries. This was first come, first served for the fiscal year 2024 (October 1, 2023 to September 30, 2024). This covered raw cane sugar, refined sugar TRQs let countries send a certain amount of a product to US with a lower tax rate. But, if they send more than a fixed limit, they have to pay a higher tax rate for all imports of that product

Sugarcane is a widely grown crop in the Nile Basin, but its destructive effects on soils, water resources and biodiversity have become increasingly apparent.
As the thirsty crop draws down water resources, aquatic species like the critically endangered Nubian flapshell turtle suffer a loss of habitat, forage and nesting sites.
In an effort to revive soils, diversify diets and incomes, and boost water levels that many animals rely on, communities are implementing agroforestry projects in lieu of monocultures.
The resulting “food forests” attract an array of wildlife while refilling wetlands and river systems where the culturally important flapshell turtles swim.

Am I the asshole for wanting to be a sugarcane farmer?
I was a born in London, a loyal subject of the king. I was a soldier for my country, was voted into parliament, had a burgeoning career. I was asked to run a township. I, of course, accepted. And then the king assigned me here.
Really, here? Seven thousand miles from England, in the middle of the jungle with the bugs? The food is barely edible, in this colony so far away it takes a month to get a message home!
But it's three thousand acres of land so fertile you could grow almost anything off it. I figured I'd skim each harvest, and soon enough be so rich I'd leave Guiana in the dust and buy a house in Chelsea.
But noooo. No, no, I'm still here. And now these engineers are building flywheels and some ridiculous brick sphere on the waterfront, the best place I can grow my contraband, sugarcane. Ah, glorius sugarcane. A letter comes from London telling me to give them what they need. Now I'm stuck with nothing. No, your Majesty, that's not what we agreed upon!
Then in comes this celebrity and everyone adores him. Even the monarchy. He speaks a lot of nonsense—some rot about the stars, while his soft hair shines in the low light and his eyes glitter like the constellations he loves so much. Personally, I don't find it worthy of my time to listen to him. Besides, it's infuriatingly distracting the way his lips purse when he maps out the stars. And—do you know the worst part? Then he has the nerve to invite an American! Woman! to run the project. Can you believe that?
Well, I of course tried to put a stop to that. At first I tried my hand at subtlety, poisoning the clay that made their bricks with lime. I'd hoped they might leave my township if their flywheels splintered, but no luck there. Yet another American woman noticed that one. There seem to be an awful lot of them, these days. And that celebrity, well. He kept looking at them. Like he's their friend. Hmph. He never looked at me like that.
But then I realised: this was an opportunity! If there was an accident, it wouldn't reach the throne for thirty days! I'd remove the evidence, using my quick wit and myriad employees, and I'd send a report home. Something tearful, painting me as a bystander who, tragically, was the only survivor of the dreadful accident that occurred. Murder wouldn't even cross their minds!
I've done my time! I've been the upstanding subject of his Majesty, and now? Now this "sphere" of theirs will crash to the ground, into the dust where it belongs. Here? I'll be the last man standing!
And the sugarcane will finally be mine. Rows and rows of it, and soon I'll be living like a king! Well, I'm not just doing this for sugarcane. I'm also doing it... because I don't like them.
So, AITA?

Ninety-one years ago, the Brazilian heroine Maragarida Alves was born
The union leader and farmer Margarida Alves was killed in 1983, but continues to inspire women's struggle
Tumblr media
Ninety-one years ago, on August 5, 1933, Margarida Maria Alves was born in the town of Alagoa Grande, in the state of Paraíba. A rural worker, union leader and activist for women's rights and agrarian reform in Brazil, Margarida – which means “daisy” in Portuguese – was one of the first women to chair a labor union in the country, the Rural Workers' Union in Alagoa Grande. During her tenure, she filed more than 600 labor lawsuits and was one of the most active voices in denouncing non-compliance with labor laws and precarious working conditions in the region's sugarcane mills.
"Margarida was a strong woman, a very courageous person and a great fighter. She faced a fierce struggle against big landowners and persecutors of workers, because it wasn't easy at that time," said Margarida Alves' friend and fellow fighter Maria da Soledade Leite.
During Brazil’s military dictatorship (1964-1985), Margarida was undeterred by the threats of landowners and authoritarian rulers and continued to take action against the total absence of labor rights, long working hours, low pay and child labor in sugarcane plantations. She was also one of the founders of the Rural Workers' Education and Culture Center, alongside educator and patron of Brazilian education Paulo Freire.
"It's better to die struggling than dying of hunger," Margarida Alves declared during the May 1st celebrations in 1983, just three months before she was murdered at the behest of landowners and outside her home. Her death, on August 12 of that same year, had repercussions in the trade union movement and among women's organizations in Paraíba. They began to demand justice and share her ideas, which ended up becoming a reference for trade unionism and Brazilian feminism. The crime remains unpunished.
