Apni Mandi Farmers Market, 41081 Fremont Blvd, Fremont, CA 94538
Tumblr media
Apni Mandi is the rebranded Apna Bazaar. It’s a full-sized Indian supermarket.
Some of the fresh produce is placed outside in front the store. They had a wide variety of fruits and veggies, more so than the average Indian supermarket, and prices were reasonable. I spotted some Chinese vegetables too, like Napa cabbage and Chinese bittermelon. I didn’t see organic produce.
The interior felt like a warehouse store, no frills but stocked with an impressive selection of spices, rice, condiments, nuts, beans, snacks, ice cream, dairy products, tea, halal meat (but no butcher counter), etc. They have baked goods but no in-store bakery.
One side had items for the home, including pots, pans, and dosa griddles, small appliances, dishes, drinking glasses, incense, incense holders, home temples (so many of these), statues, bracelets, etc.
They had a fresh sugarcane juice stand, fresh paan counter, and pani puri. But none of these were open in the morning.
Apni Mandi shares a large parking lot with other businesses, most of which are Indian (including several restaurants). 4 out of 5 stars

I just had a mental image of Krishna Rukmini having a Bangali wedding...or should I say biye.
It is shubhodrishti (where the bride moves the paan leaves away from her face and the couple meet eyes for the first time)
Rukmini's POV
She was dying to remove the paan leaves and lay her eyes on her Ghanshyam. It was finally time. But a strange shyness overtook her...almost a reverent shyness. She was about to look at Krishna, her Krishna. She demurely looked at his face and the entire universe surrounding her seemed to grind to a halt. He truly was Bhuvansundar. His eyes were like young lotus buds drenched in fresh dew. Kalboishakhi clouds seemed to form his skin. The entire cosmos had condensed to form his divine darkness. And the chandan dots on his forehead looked like gleaming stars in the night sky. His soft locks of hair framed his face beautifully. And his topor made him look so regal. Her heart longed to hear her name come forth from his honeyed lips. She could not keep the tears away from her eyes and neither the joyous smile from her face. She realised that he was looking at her just as fixedly as she was. His smile in her direction felt like the cool breeze that used to play through her hair in Vaikunth.
Krishna's POV
He heard the uludhwani go up. He knew his beloved would be here any moment. His heart searched for her presence with fervent devotion. A joyful commotion started and his Hridayvasini was carried on a pnidi. The group went around him 7 times. Each revolution making his heart go a little more wild. Finally they stopped in front of him, his Shree had her face covered with paan leaves. She was dressed in the most radiant red benarasi, decked in gold and an ornate shola crown. She finally lowered her paan leaf and looked up at him. Her brightest jewellery paled in comparison to the golden glow of her face. Her ruby red lips stretched into a shy smile and it seemed as though all the stars of the night sky had come together to take the shape of a bloomed lotus. Her kohl lined eyes shined with joyful tears. They looked like the diya that burns by the two sides of the door guiding the homeward bound souls. And he was home. Those eyes were Vaikunth.

~ The one deceived
»»————> ◐◐◐◐◐◐◐◐◐◐◐◐◐◐◐<————««
O lovers, enchanters of your sweet maidens, must you keep in mind to never displease the queen of your hearts.
'She who adorns herself in fine silks and jewels, awaits you at night hiding from the entire town in the heart of the forest where fierce beasts lay, she must never be kept await for long and certainly must not be left alone if ever your eyes droop for a night. Who knows someone else might snatch the beauty away?

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐞𝐣𝐞𝐰𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐝 𝐋𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫
With dark eyes not blue lotus
she fashions a welcome garland.
Petals she strews—
not various species of jasmine
but smiles.
Water she offers from ripe
moistened breasts
rather than ceremonial jars.
With only her own body
she makes for her
lover an
auspicious welcome.
~ Erotic Love Poems from India
A tightly knotted braid pinned by jewelled pins moves like a serpent by her waist. She carefully arranges flowers in her hair, just the way he likes. She spent months apart from him, and now is the time to bring long lost romance back into their lives -- of sweet nothings, stolen kisses, teasing words and the bliss of just being around your lover.
The morning was spent in perfuming the hair and the body. His favourite scent: the rain perfused soil. It always enchanted him when she passed by the busy market place in front of him. She usually preferred a light scent of roses, but today she has to make him heady as soon as he catches a whiff of air around him.
A necklace decked with moonstones sits on her making her look dazzling. Her wrists are adorned with glass bangles, and a shy smile teases her lips when her friends tease her on the various ways glass bangles can be broken tonight.
"Quiet. You must not speak like this. He's a gentle lover," she admonishes them with a stern look that soon melts into a beautiful blush and her friends once again start teasing her.
"You look perfect now. If you decorate yourself anymore, your dazzling form shall blind him as soon as he enters the house," says a friend, dabbing a kohl dot behind the jewelled maiden's ear to ward off the evil eye.

Soft silks from lands far and wide,

But what pleases the bejewelled beauty?
A silver box revealing a richly stuffed Kaushal paan.
'In separation I have burned for several moons, and my heart wailed in agony. Where do I carry this ocean of love when you are the shore that binds me to you? Oh, my dearest, my lovely moon, it is you I desire. Come meet my by the riverside near the sweet-smelling jasmine bower.'

alert the love god who stands ever ready with love arrows.

Doe eyes search for him in every corner of the forest.

The love god too has dozed off, his bow and arrows discarded beside.
The garland around her neck now frail,
Tiny buds fall down and mingle with the earth...

And, rasikas, here we behold a man who did not keep his promise. Sends the extravagant betel leaf and promises of giving a beautiful night, but gives in to the sweet embrace of slumber while the beauty awaits in the forest, her once radiant face now pale in fear and annoyance.
Oh, the pain of shattered dreams filled of love, sweet words, passionate touches and long nights. How can one scorn a woman this way after long nights of loneliness?
Chuckle in mirth my friends, for the man dreams of kissing her lips in his sleep. Who shall tell him about his lover's wrath at dawn break tomorrow?
*******
Breathing hard into the lotus calyx
Annoyed at his care less actions,
She wipes an angry tear from her soft cheek.
Tosses away the wretched droopy garland,
Flings the silver anklet far across the room.
Red lips that should have been kissed curse the sun.
Arms that should have been curled around his neck
Lay bare bereft of bangles on the silken sheets.
Her bosom that should have carried drops of perspiration from a sweet night of love
That should have been kissed tenderly, Adorned with a chain of bites
Now heave in anger, wanting a respite.
The love god scoffs at the man yet deep in sleep
Who makes love the scorned woman in waking.
The love goddess pitifully caresses the heart broken girl,
And winces when the moon-like beauty sends
A silver box encasing an empty betel leaf and a lone anklet

Top 10 Popular Street Foods of Varanasi
Tumblr media
Varanasi, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, offers a rich tapestry of culinary delights. The city’s street food reflects its cultural diversity and historical depth, offering a variety of flavors and textures that are a treat to the senses. Varanasi’s street food scene is a vibrant mix of flavors, textures, and traditions. From the spicy and tangy Tamatar Chaat to the creamy, dreamy Malaiyo, the city offers a culinary journey that is as rich and diverse as its history. Each dish tells a story of the city’s cultural heritage, making every bite a unique experience. Whether you are a food connoisseur or a curious traveler, the street foods of Varanasi promise a gastronomic adventure that is both satisfying and unforgettable.
Kachori Sabzi: Kachori Sabzi is a quintessential Varanasi breakfast, loved by locals and tourists alike. This dish consists of round, flaky pastries called kachoris, stuffed with a spicy mixture of lentils or urad dal. These are deep-fried until golden and crispy. The kachoris are served with a piping hot, tangy, and spicy potato curry (sabzi) that perfectly complements the rich, flaky pastry. A variant called choti kachori, smaller in size, is also popular. The dish is often garnished with green chilies and coriander, making it a perfect blend of flavors and textures.
Chena Dahi Vada: A unique twist on the traditional dahi vada, the Chena Dahi Vada of Varanasi is made from chena (paneer or fresh cottage cheese). These soft, fluffy vadas are soaked in chilled, creamy yogurt and topped with a drizzle of sweet tamarind chutney, spicy green chutney, and a sprinkle of chaat masala and roasted cumin powder. The result is a delightful balance of sweet, spicy, and tangy flavors, combined with the melt-in-the-mouth texture of the vadas.
Tamatar Chaat: Tamatar Chaat is a spicy and tangy street food unique to Varanasi. Made from mashed tomatoes cooked with boiled potatoes, spices, and green chilies, this chaat is a burst of flavors. The mixture is garnished with sev (crunchy chickpea noodles), chopped onions, fresh coriander, and sometimes pomegranate seeds. It's served hot, making it a perfect snack for any time of the day. The combination of soft tomatoes, crispy sev, and aromatic spices makes Tamatar Chaat an irresistible treat.
Baati Chokha: Baati Chokha is a traditional dish from the region, often associated with rustic, village-style cooking. Baati are round wheat flour dough balls, baked or roasted until they are crisp on the outside and soft inside. They are typically served with chokha, a mashed vegetable preparation made from roasted eggplant (baingan), tomatoes, and potatoes, flavored with mustard oil, garlic, and green chilies. This dish is usually enjoyed with a dollop of ghee (clarified butter) on the baati, enhancing its rich flavor and making it a wholesome meal.
Malaiyo: A seasonal delicacy available only during the winter months, Malaiyo is a light and airy dessert that captures the essence of Varanasi. It is made by churning milk and cream overnight and letting it sit under the open sky to collect dew. The next morning, it is flavored with saffron, cardamom, and a hint of sugar, resulting in a frothy, creamy concoction that melts in the mouth. Often garnished with pistachios and almonds, Malaiyo is a testament to the culinary artistry and tradition of the city.
Chura Matar: Chura Matar is a simple yet flavorful dish made from flattened rice (poha) and fresh green peas. The poha is lightly sautéed with peas, mustard seeds, cumin, green chilies, ginger, and a dash of lemon juice. This dish is often enjoyed during the winter season when fresh peas are abundant. It's garnished with coriander leaves and sometimes grated coconut, offering a refreshing, light, and healthy snack that's both filling and delicious.
Banarasi Paan: While not a food in the traditional sense, Banarasi Paan is an integral part of Varanasi's street food culture. A betel leaf filled with a mixture of areca nut, slaked lime, and various sweet and savory condiments, Banarasi Paan is a post-meal treat that aids digestion and leaves a refreshing taste in the mouth. There are many variations, including meetha (sweet) and sada (plain), each offering a unique experience. The art of making and serving paan is a skill passed down through generations, making it a cultural as well as a culinary delight.
Thandai: Thandai is a traditional cooling beverage that holds a special place in Varanasi’s food culture, especially during festivals like Holi and Mahashivratri. This drink is made from a mixture of milk, sugar, almonds, fennel seeds, watermelon seeds, rose petals, pepper, cardamom, saffron, and poppy seeds. The ingredients are ground into a fine paste and mixed with milk to create a rich, aromatic drink. Sometimes, bhang (cannabis) is added during certain festivals, making it a unique and celebratory beverage. Served chilled, Thandai is both refreshing and nourishing.
Lassi: Varanasi's lassi is a rich, creamy yogurt-based drink, often enjoyed as a refreshment on hot days. This thick, frothy beverage is sweetened with sugar and flavored with rose water or cardamom. It’s usually topped with a generous dollop of malai (cream) and sometimes garnished with dry fruits like almonds and pistachios. Served in traditional earthenware cups, lassi in Varanasi is not just a drink but an experience that reflects the city’s culinary heritage.
Jalebi: No exploration of Varanasi’s street food is complete without indulging in the syrupy sweetness of Jalebi. Made from a batter of fermented flour, these spirals are deep-fried until crispy and then soaked in sugar syrup flavored with saffron or cardamom. Jalebis are best enjoyed hot and fresh, offering a delightful contrast of textures with a crispy exterior and a juicy, syrupy interior. Often paired with Rabri (thickened sweetened milk) for an extra indulgence, Jalebis are a popular treat enjoyed by people of all ages.

Balancing Flavors: How to Achieve the Perfect Hookah Taste
Tumblr media
Hookah smoking is an age-old tradition that has evolved over the centuries. Today, it’s not just about the experience of smoking but also about the rich and varied flavors that enhance it. Achieving the perfect hookah taste is an art, and balancing flavors is key to this process. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced hookah enthusiast, understanding how to combine the best hookah flavors can transform your smoking session into a delightful experience.
Understanding Hookah Flavors
Hookah flavors, also known as hookah shisha flavors, are made from a mixture of tobacco, molasses, glycerin, and various flavorings. The best hookah tobacco flavors offer a smooth and enjoyable smoke, and the key to this lies in the quality of the ingredients and the balance of the flavors. It's important to choose high-quality tobacco and to experiment with different flavor combinations to find what suits your palate.
The Best Hookah Tobacco Flavors
Some of the best hookah tobacco flavors are fruity, floral, minty, and spicy. Fruity flavors like apple, grape, and watermelon are popular for their refreshing taste. Floral flavors such as rose and jasmine offer a unique and exotic experience, while minty flavors provide a cool and invigorating smoke. Spicy flavors like cinnamon and clove add a warm and aromatic touch. Mixing these flavors in the right proportions can create a balanced and satisfying smoke.
Top Hookah Flavors to Try
To achieve the perfect hookah taste, it’s essential to explore the top hookah flavors. Some of the most beloved flavors among hookah enthusiasts include:
Double Apple: A classic flavor that combines sweet and tart apple notes with a hint of anise.
Mint: A refreshing and cooling flavor that pairs well with almost any other flavor.
Blueberry: Sweet and slightly tangy, this flavor is a favorite for its smooth and fruity profile.
Peach: A juicy and sweet flavor that is perfect for a summer smoke.
Watermelon: Refreshing and light, watermelon is a popular choice for its clean and crisp taste.
Best Hookah Flavors in India
India has a rich tradition of hookah smoking, and the best hookah flavors in India reflect the country’s diverse palate. Popular flavors include:
Pan Masala: A unique blend of spices and herbs that offers a traditional Indian taste.
Mango: Sweet and tropical, mango is a favorite among those who enjoy fruity flavors.
Lychee: Exotic and fragrant, lychee provides a delicate and refreshing smoke.
Paan: Inspired by the Indian betel leaf, paan flavor is aromatic and slightly sweet.
Gulab (Rose): A floral flavor that captures the essence of Indian roses.
Mixing Flavors for the Perfect Balance
Achieving the perfect hookah taste often involves mixing different hookah shisha flavors. Here are some tips to help you balance flavors effectively:
Start with a Base Flavor: Choose a primary flavor that will serve as the base of your mix. This could be a strong flavor like double apple or a versatile one like mint.
Add Complementary Flavors: Select one or two additional flavors that complement the base flavor. For example, mint pairs well with fruity flavors like watermelon or blueberry.
Experiment with Proportions: The ratio of flavors is crucial. Start with a 70:30 ratio, with 70% being the base flavor and 30% the complementary flavors. Adjust according to taste.
Test and Adjust: Smoke a small amount to test the mix. If one flavor is overpowering, adjust the proportions until you find the perfect balance.
Consider the Heat: The amount of heat applied can affect the flavor. Too much heat can cause the flavors to burn, while too little can make the smoke weak. Adjust the charcoal to find the right balance.
Tips for Enhancing Your Hookah Experience
In addition to balancing flavors, there are other factors that can enhance your hookah experience:
Use Fresh Ingredients: Always use fresh hookah tobacco flavors to ensure the best taste.
Clean Your Hookah: Regularly clean your hookah to prevent residue build-up that can affect the flavor.
Proper Packing: Pack the bowl properly to ensure even heating and airflow.
Quality Charcoal: Use high-quality charcoal that burns evenly and doesn’t add unwanted flavors.
Hydration: Stay hydrated while smoking, as it can enhance the taste and reduce harshness.
Balancing flavors to achieve the perfect hookah taste is a journey of exploration and experimentation. By understanding the different types of hookah shisha flavors and how to mix them, you can create a personalized and enjoyable smoking experience. Whether you’re enjoying the best hookah flavors in India or trying out new combinations, the key is to find the right balance that suits your taste. Happy smoking!
