Apni Mandi Farmers Market, 41081 Fremont Blvd, Fremont, CA 94538

Apni Mandi is the rebranded Apna Bazaar. It’s a full-sized Indian supermarket.
Some of the fresh produce is placed outside in front the store. They had a wide variety of fruits and veggies, more so than the average Indian supermarket, and prices were reasonable. I spotted some Chinese vegetables too, like Napa cabbage and Chinese bittermelon. I didn’t see organic produce.
The interior felt like a warehouse store, no frills but stocked with an impressive selection of spices, rice, condiments, nuts, beans, snacks, ice cream, dairy products, tea, halal meat (but no butcher counter), etc. They have baked goods but no in-store bakery.
One side had items for the home, including pots, pans, and dosa griddles, small appliances, dishes, drinking glasses, incense, incense holders, home temples (so many of these), statues, bracelets, etc.
They had a fresh sugarcane juice stand, fresh paan counter, and pani puri. But none of these were open in the morning.
Apni Mandi shares a large parking lot with other businesses, most of which are Indian (including several restaurants). 4 out of 5 stars

“He who experiences the unity of life sees his own Self in all beings, and all beings in his own Self, and looks on everything with an impartial eye.” ― Krishna-Dwaipayana Vyasa, The Bhagavad Gita
Radha Krishna Swing Talon Abraxas Jhulan Yatra: The Celebration of Radha-Krishna’s Divine Love The love of Radha and Krishna is timeless, eternal. Therefore, it is difficult to miss the many stories and fables associated with them. Of all such tales, the Radha-Krishna affair is the most brilliant and unforgettable one. The romance of Krishna with Radha has served as an ideal example of male-female bonding through many celebrations in India. The mystical love of Radha for Shri Krishna has found expression in some of the most popular festivals such as Jhulan Yatra in the holy Braj, where Shri Krishna appeared some 5,000 years ago. Devakinandan’s youthful romance with the cow-herding maidens symbolises the interplay of love and adoration between the Almighty and the human soul. Radharani’s ecstatic love and devotion for Shyamsundar is often explained as the pursuit of union with the Lord. Jhulan, the swing festival, begins on August 22 and ends on August 26 this year.
After the blistering summer heat, when the clouds float in the skies above and the roaring thunder ushers in the monsoon, the Brajwasi’s are overjoyed when the rains finally arrive, providing respite from the sweltering heat. With the onset of the monsoon, the birds hum and the peacocks dance in the enchanting forests of Vrindavan. The forests of the holy Braj come to life with lush greenery and new colours. The trees sprout green leaves and colourful blossoms, and the bees hang around the blooms drinking sweet nectar from the flowering blooms. With the raindrops touching the ground, the ponds and lakes fill with fresh water, the lotuses bloom, the air fills with a pleasant fragrance. So, with the arrival of the rains, the magical forests of Vrindavan, where Radha and Krishna spent time together on a decked out jhula, turns stunningly beautiful. This is how Radha and Krishna enjoyed blissful swinging in the holy groves of Vrindavan.
The Beautiful Story behind Jhulan Yatra Lord Krishna and Radharani met in the verdant forests of Vrindavan, where the sakhis prepared a beautiful flower-adorned jhula that hung from one of the high branches of a Kadamba tree. The long golden ropes were intertwined with madhavi and jasmine creepers and other fragrant blossoms. When Shrimati Radhika arrived in Vrishabhanupur, the sakhis made preparations for the Jhulan festival. In the Bhakti Shastras, you will find descriptions of the different jhulas on which Radharani and Devakinandan sat together. There was one swing on which Shyamsundar and Radharani sat facing each other. There was another lotus-shaped jhula with eight petals and this was where the ashtasakhis sat with Krishna and Radha in the centre.
Sometimes, Devakinandan pulled Radharani onto His jhula or jumped onto her swing all of a sudden, taking her by surprise. The sakhis standing around showered flowers on Radha and Krishna and offered aarti to them. They also offered beautiful garlands, served sweet paans, and sprayed cold rose water on Radha-Krishna. The sakhis sang melodious songs and played musical instruments to please the youthful couple. A famous brajwasi bhajan for Jhulan runs as follows:
“Radhe jhulana padharo jhuka aye badara Jhuka aye badara, ghir aye badara.”
(Oh Radhika, go and sit in the swing. Low rain clouds have filled the sky.)
“Jhula jhule Radha Damodara Vrindavan mein Kaisi chayi hariyali kunjan mein.”
(Radha and Damodara are swinging on the swing in Vrindavan. Oh friend, how very green the kunja is!)

I just had a mental image of Krishna Rukmini having a Bangali wedding...or should I say biye.
It is shubhodrishti (where the bride moves the paan leaves away from her face and the couple meet eyes for the first time)
Rukmini's POV
She was dying to remove the paan leaves and lay her eyes on her Ghanshyam. It was finally time. But a strange shyness overtook her...almost a reverent shyness. She was about to look at Krishna, her Krishna. She demurely looked at his face and the entire universe surrounding her seemed to grind to a halt. He truly was Bhuvansundar. His eyes were like young lotus buds drenched in fresh dew. Kalboishakhi clouds seemed to form his skin. The entire cosmos had condensed to form his divine darkness. And the chandan dots on his forehead looked like gleaming stars in the night sky. His soft locks of hair framed his face beautifully. And his topor made him look so regal. Her heart longed to hear her name come forth from his honeyed lips. She could not keep the tears away from her eyes and neither the joyous smile from her face. She realised that he was looking at her just as fixedly as she was. His smile in her direction felt like the cool breeze that used to play through her hair in Vaikunth.
Krishna's POV
He heard the uludhwani go up. He knew his beloved would be here any moment. His heart searched for her presence with fervent devotion. A joyful commotion started and his Hridayvasini was carried on a pnidi. The group went around him 7 times. Each revolution making his heart go a little more wild. Finally they stopped in front of him, his Shree had her face covered with paan leaves. She was dressed in the most radiant red benarasi, decked in gold and an ornate shola crown. She finally lowered her paan leaf and looked up at him. Her brightest jewellery paled in comparison to the golden glow of her face. Her ruby red lips stretched into a shy smile and it seemed as though all the stars of the night sky had come together to take the shape of a bloomed lotus. Her kohl lined eyes shined with joyful tears. They looked like the diya that burns by the two sides of the door guiding the homeward bound souls. And he was home. Those eyes were Vaikunth.

~ The one deceived
»»————> ◐◐◐◐◐◐◐◐◐◐◐◐◐◐◐<————««
O lovers, enchanters of your sweet maidens, must you keep in mind to never displease the queen of your hearts.
'She who adorns herself in fine silks and jewels, awaits you at night hiding from the entire town in the heart of the forest where fierce beasts lay, she must never be kept await for long and certainly must not be left alone if ever your eyes droop for a night. Who knows someone else might snatch the beauty away?

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐞𝐣𝐞𝐰𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐝 𝐋𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫
With dark eyes not blue lotus
she fashions a welcome garland.
Petals she strews—
not various species of jasmine
but smiles.
Water she offers from ripe
moistened breasts
rather than ceremonial jars.
With only her own body
she makes for her
lover an
auspicious welcome.
~ Erotic Love Poems from India
A tightly knotted braid pinned by jewelled pins moves like a serpent by her waist. She carefully arranges flowers in her hair, just the way he likes. She spent months apart from him, and now is the time to bring long lost romance back into their lives -- of sweet nothings, stolen kisses, teasing words and the bliss of just being around your lover.
The morning was spent in perfuming the hair and the body. His favourite scent: the rain perfused soil. It always enchanted him when she passed by the busy market place in front of him. She usually preferred a light scent of roses, but today she has to make him heady as soon as he catches a whiff of air around him.
A necklace decked with moonstones sits on her making her look dazzling. Her wrists are adorned with glass bangles, and a shy smile teases her lips when her friends tease her on the various ways glass bangles can be broken tonight.
"Quiet. You must not speak like this. He's a gentle lover," she admonishes them with a stern look that soon melts into a beautiful blush and her friends once again start teasing her.
"You look perfect now. If you decorate yourself anymore, your dazzling form shall blind him as soon as he enters the house," says a friend, dabbing a kohl dot behind the jewelled maiden's ear to ward off the evil eye.

The letter in betel leaves 🥀
Handmaiden bears a large plate on her tender hands.
Soft silks from lands far and wide,
jewels crafted in nothing but perfection,
perfume extracted from only exotic flowers and oils,
But what pleases the bejewelled beauty?
A silver box revealing a richly stuffed Kaushal paan.
'In separation I have burned for several moons, and my heart wailed in agony. Where do I carry this ocean of love when you are the shore that binds me to you? Oh, my dearest, my lovely moon, it is you I desire. Come meet my by the riverside near the sweet-smelling jasmine bower.'

'We sipped on moon-gleam at midnight.
And the moon rose in our eyes, at midnight.'
-- Delicate as the moonstone, bangle laden wrists
alert the love god who stands ever ready with love arrows.
She traverses down the narrow forest path,
Her feet leave behind fresh red footprints on earth,
And jingling anklets make the serpents steer off her way.
-- The jasmine bower fresh and fragrant as ever,
Fireflies adorn the bushes like earthen lamps in a house's courtyard.
The moon unveiled shines on the resplendent maiden
And like the chakora, she fills her eyes with the moonbeams,
In each, a vision of the man prisoned in heart.
-- The forest grows still.
Doe eyes search for him in every corner of the forest.
Is he playing games today? Must I walk and search for him now?
The love god too has dozed off, his bow and arrows discarded beside.
The garland around her neck now frail,
Tiny buds fall down and mingle with the earth...
»»————>○○○○○○○○○○○○<————««
And, rasikas, here we behold a man who did not keep his promise. Sends the extravagant betel leaf and promises of giving a beautiful night, but gives in to the sweet embrace of slumber while the beauty awaits in the forest, her once radiant face now pale in fear and annoyance.
Oh, the pain of shattered dreams filled of love, sweet words, passionate touches and long nights. How can one scorn a woman this way after long nights of loneliness?
Chuckle in mirth my friends, for the man dreams of kissing her lips in his sleep. Who shall tell him about his lover's wrath at dawn break tomorrow?
*******
Breathing hard into the lotus calyx
Annoyed at his care less actions,
She wipes an angry tear from her soft cheek.
Tosses away the wretched droopy garland,
Flings the silver anklet far across the room.
Red lips that should have been kissed curse the sun.
Arms that should have been curled around his neck
Lay bare bereft of bangles on the silken sheets.
Her bosom that should have carried drops of perspiration from a sweet night of love
That should have been kissed tenderly, Adorned with a chain of bites
Now heave in anger, wanting a respite.
The love god scoffs at the man yet deep in sleep
Who makes love the scorned woman in waking.
The love goddess pitifully caresses the heart broken girl,
And winces when the moon-like beauty sends
A silver box encasing an empty betel leaf and a lone anklet

Eid in my childhood was a full of excitement and warmth, filled with laughter. The day would begin early, the house already alive with the rustling noise from the kitchen, the air thick with the aroma of my ammur ranna. Even before my eyes were fully open, I could feel Eid had arrived. The breeze used to be different on Eid.
One of my greatest joys was choosing my outfit for the day. There was a fresh set for each day of Eid. A privilege, a luxury I hadn’t quite grasped back then. Once dressed in my best, with matching clips and a purse to stack the saalamies, I would rush to greet my parents with salaams. Ammu would always feed us something light before we starter the day.
Our first stop was always 4 Taala, the family’s central gathering place. It was an unspoken tradition. Everyone, no matter where they had started, would eventually find themselves there. Paying salaams to Boroammu and Boroabbu, awaiting our first salaami. The old building, with its mosaic staircases and the wooden railings (our slides), us hopping around each floor to greet everyone, it all felt like the beating heart of our Eid celebrations.
From there, we would make our way to Kaka and Kaki’s house, where the melody of chirping birds greeted us even before the door opened. Kakar basha had an aviary in theor balcony. It wasy favourite corner of their home. I've spent numerous hours of my life just admiring the love birds.
Soon all the cousins would unite under the roof. Now a bustling, giggling mass, would pile into a microbus, boroabbu noah, ready to embark on a day of house hopping. With seven fuppus to visit, each home held its own charm, its own signature Eider khabar laid out in preparation for our arrival. Borofuppi was an exception though. She was the one who would visit us with the children and grandchildren. I thought it to be a badass move. Coming from Dhaka to Narayanganj, with her family to meet us, ditching all the traditions.
It was an unspoken rule that we would have our main meal at Hena Fuppi’s house. She and Butta (her nickname was Beauty but we called her Butta idky) would insist on feeding us by hand, making sure no one left hungry. Each fuppi's home had its own charm. The alleyways leading to them was an adventure if its own, especially hena fuppi's house. The goli that led to her door was a narrow alleyway lined with old dusty rusty doors, some slightly ajar. We would sneak and peak a little while crossing the goli. Take a look at the different lives each door kept hidden. It was a scene straight out of a vintage sepia movie. We would run, jump, hop and dance our way to her door. Munnu and Mina Fuppi’s house was fun as well with its five floors full of family to greet. My cheeks used to hurt with all the smiling and nodding. Boumoni’s floor ha a special memory, that’s where I watched Harry Potter for the first time, with little Azim toddling around. That too on Eid. Munnu's home was adorned with bidishi toys, and she ALWAYS had bidishi chocolates in her house. So we used to keep the best for the last. So we can spend most time there.
One of the best parts of Eid as a child in a big family was the endless saalaami. We would collect crisp bills from relatives throughout the day, slipping them into pockets and mini purses. At night, we would excitedly count our earnings. Once, I managed to save up 30 k. Never felt so rich in life.
Amongst all the fuppies, laal fuppi was the most chill. We used to call her laal fuppi because her tongue used to be laal. She loves paan, you see. She's chill, because she never forced fed us or anything. She knew we had a long list of houses to hop around. So she made space, space in our hearts and our tummy.
Remember how long Eid days used to feel back then? Sometimes, I can't wrap my head around it. How did we manage to visit so many homes, greet so many people, and still have time for mischief and laughter? It feels like an impossible feat now, like a chapter from a storybook too whimsical to be real.
Our Eid would never be complete without visiting Chotonanu and Boronanu. After making the rounds to all our fuppis, my siblings and I would head to nanubari in the evening or night. And later at our khala's. We knew a swarm of little brats, eager and restless awaited our arrival. On some gracious occasions dadubari cousins would tag along as well.
It is indeed a privilege to have a nanubari as mine. A bari filled with selfless souls, people who never once let out an uff at our antics. And antics, we had plenty. We were a band of little rascals, untamed and fearless.I still remember the day someone, one particularly fazil, thought swinging from Boromama’s chandelier would be the ultimate thrill. A part of it came down with him. Another day, it was the curtain rack’s turn to fall victim to our jonglir moto karbar. We acted like spoilt brats at our nanubari ngl.
We had an uthaan (I've already rambles about our precious uthaan previously. Id give anything to go back to that uthaan) initially which was replaced by two rooftops. Boronanu had rules. He would lock the roof after shondhar azaan. But the fazil er dol would squeeze in through the holes of the iron gate to enter the chhad. We had mudir dokan right beside nanubasha. The amount of cocola chocolate gems we've had in the name of nana. When the dokaandar asked for money, we would say, baakir khataye nanar naam likhe den. He would giggle as well at our mischief. May Allah forgive us. May Allah grant nana jannahtul ferdous.
Eid is when nostalgia consumes me the most. I miss everyone I’ve lost. Too many names from this list of people now exist only in memory. I wish I had known, back then, how precious those moments were. I wish I had taken more initiative, held on tighter, been more present instead of simply floating through time. But childhood doesn’t grant us that wisdom. Does it?

Gulkand is a traditional rose petal jam made from Damask rose petals with Daga Mishri (Rock Sugar), which is dried in the sun for several weeks. This natural process preserves the roses' nutrients and enhances their cooling and remedial properties. Unlike artificial flavours loaded with preservatives, Rose Jam is a pure and nutritional remedy used in Ayurveda for centuries.
Why is Gulkand (Rose Petal Jam) the Perfect Summer Superfood?
Many health benefits can be obtained from consuming Gulkand. Due to its high antioxidants and probiotics, Gulkand helps the body fight against free radicals and reduce oxidative stress. It’s the perfect summer snack as the natural sugars give you a quick energy boost.
1. Natural Body Coolant
Gulkand regulates body temperature and reduces the effect of heat. It’s especially good for those who are prone to heat strokes and sunburns.
2. Prevents Acidity and Indigestion
Summers lead to acidity and digestive issues. Gulkand’s antioxidants neutralizes stomach acid, and prevent heartburn and bloating.
3. Boosts Energy and Fights Fatigue
Feeling drained due to excessive sweating? Gulkand restores lost energy levels and keeps you fresh and active throughout the day.
4. Aids in Hydration
The natural probiotics in Gulkand keep your body hydrated and prevent dehydration and dry skin.

5. Improves Skin Health
Summers can make your skin dull, rough and irritated. The antioxidants in sun-cooked Gulkand detoxify the body and give you a healthy glow from within.
6. Supports Gut Health
A healthy summer depends on a happy gut! Gulkand is a natural probiotic that promotes digestion and eases constipation and overall gut health.
7. Promotes Relaxation and Lowers Stress
Summertime exhaustion can take a toll on your Mental health. Gulkand has calming properties that help reduce stress, improve mood, and promote peaceful sleep.
Sun- Cooked Gulkand with Daga Mishri What Makes It Special?
Not all Gulkand’s are the same! Sun-cooked Gulkand made with Daga Mishri stands out due to its traditional preparation method.
Slow Sun-cooking– rather than artificial heat, the mixture is naturally cooked under the sun for weeks, ensuring all nutrients remain complete.
Daga Mishri( Rock Sugar) used rather than Regular Refined Sugar – Daga Mishri is a mineral-rich, unprocessed sweetener that enhances the cooling effect of Gulkand.
Preservative-Free and Pure – Unlike commercial syrups, sun-cooked Gulkand is free from artificial complements, making it a healthier choice.
How to use Gulkand in Summer?
Gulkand is good for overall health if consumed daily. But because of its natural sugar content one needs to be moderate. You can include Rose Jam in your daily diet by adding it to drinks, smoothies or desserts. There are many ways to enjoy Gulkand and beat the summer heat.
Consume Directly – Eat a spoonful of Gulkand on an empty stomach for maximum benefits.
Mix in Milk – Mix a tablespoon of Gulkand in cold milk for a summer cool drink.
Spread on Bread or Chapathi – Use Gulkand as a spread for a healthy and tasty snack.
Mix in Smoothies – Add Gulkand to fruit smoothies for a cool and nutritious twist.
Use as a Dessert topping – Drizzle Gulkand over yogurt, ice cream or puddings for a treat.
