Would love to hear about some of your attempts on your surana's life

i love minerva surana to pieces and i have always been trying to get rid of her because she is the most narratively inconvenient woman alive. she is extremely powerful, both magically and politically, and not only fond of getting involved in everyone’s business even if it has nothing to do with her, but highly personally invested in most of the major political struggles in the following decades after her victory

i’ve gone back to poring over an old favourite where during the height of about-to-burst mage templar tensions, an attempt on alistair’s life forces her to visibly use blood magic in front of the gathered nobles & chantry higher-ups of ferelden. she could use her connections and warden immunity to get away with it, but that would mean kinloch hold takes the fall for the templars’ renewed ire. instead, she agrees to tranquillity. she would do it with the hope that her gift for strategy would continue to be useful to the wardens, only for what i have always known to be true about her character—that despite how little she sometimes pretends to feel, she would be nothing, listless and useless and never pushing her mind to its great achievements, without how much she cares—to come true. and she would see no point in dragging it out under those circumstances, and have made her wishes clear

i remember writing a shoddy attempt at an in-world codex entry about it and concluding with something like “six months after being made tranquil, surana was assassinated by her own husband, the former antivan crow zevran arainai. both the wardens and the fereldan crown refused to report on their pursuit of the matter.” and feeling very sick about it. in this theoretical setup it’s a martyrdom that helps instigate the rebellion

i’ve made other attempts. for example i think it would’ve fucked if she was at the conclave. (oh she could take some of divine justinia’s place narratively...... hold on i’m onto something here.) i’m yet to truly be convinced by any of this however

Wed to the Lich (Arranged Monster Mates #8) by Layla Fae

Okay, I went into this knowing this was not the first book in the series but it didn't seem that the series may be required to be read in order as it is a collab series between Layla Fae, Eden Ember, and Cara Wylde and it wasn't recommended to be read in order - however, now having finished this I realize I may need to start from book 1 to assuage some issues I had regarding world building info. Also... that lich is just so hot... I needed to know more about him when he was what drew me to this. Which brings me to the covers!! The entire series has amazing cover art, it ranks right up there with SJ Sander's cover art that I love.

This is currently a series of 16 novellas between the above-mentioned authors, Wed to the Lich being dead in the middle at #8. It was a total of 208 pages and I read it within a quick day at work. It was a simple story which does involve triggers involving anorexia nervosa, past abuse, and animal death.

Basically, this is a world in which an event called The Shift has occurred, and from what was explained in this book alone it sounds like that was basically the... dimensional overlap of the human world and monster world where parts of the monster world ended up being transplanted into the world we know? Hopefully that is some semblance of correct as it's how I understood it. In this world, monsters rule over humans in most areas and if a human is wanting to get some cash for their family or, if you're our FL May, trying to get out of a bad situation you can sign up at the Temple and get married off to a monster.

This is exactly what May commits to as she decides to escape the abusive orphanage director who haunts her thoughts when it comes to beauty and its relation to her size and food consumption. How well this goes about depicting the troubles that come with experiencing an eating disorder I could not say, so I will leave that up to your interpretation if you choose to read. May gets married to Virgil, the all fearing Lich who can suck out your life force with just a look.

The following story revolves around May's struggle with food, her inner demons, and being beautiful for Virgil who is also struggling with how May views him and fearing that one day she may come to fear him and try to leave. In the end, they end up working out their troubles with each other's help and are a lovely couple, no matter what those town villagers think. I liked both May and Virgil's characters, he was really checking the marks for me as both loving and caring but strict and forceful when he felt necessary. By the end, May had come into who she was as a person when she wasn't tormented by her past.

My main issue comes from how I felt finishing the book. I had read 208 pages of what essentially felt like it had amounted to nothing. Unfortunately, for all that happened, there wasn't enough deep diving into characters, relationships, or true plot that it felt worthwhile. It was one of those where I was shocked it was so long for how much I got from it. I think it's a really cool story, I love a Lich, and I love a FL battling her inner demons and unafraid to seek help from another in order to do so. The way May was willing to just be blunt about what was going on versus other characters who might hide things that lead to a (beloved but sometimes overdone) miscommunication was rather refreshing.

I think I would have really enjoyed this story had it been more fleshed out. The writing was good, but the content felt unsubstantial. For all of that, I'll give it a 5/10. Mid but enjoyable and full of potential.

Would I read again? No, but not because it was bad. Just because there wouldn't feel like a point.

Would I recommend? Yeah, I am gonna go and try out the series from the first book - Wed to the Ice Giant also by Layla Fae - and then pry check out at least on book by each of the other authors. If I don't like it - you'll hear about it :)

Canon Characters vs OC vs x Reader

Disclaimer: This is just my two cents, and my perspective on things, and I'm not trying to lay down the law for everyone. I needed to just put this to words though, in order to sleep.

I was thinking about this because of a post I saw, and some, we'll say, kind of useless comments associated with the post. Mean-spirited stuff.

Normally, in one ear and out the other, but the vibes just kicked me off down a rabbit hole of sorts an I wanted to try to put some of my thoughts to words.

First, some style vibes:

Canon x Canon Canon/Canon stories are, to me, like reading an episode of that show. I'm sitting down in front of a TV or whatever, and I'm experiencing the story As A Viewer. I like this style because I don't really have to expend much energy and I just kind of roll with whatever's happening. Generally some sort of 3rd person perspective.

OC x canon OC/Canon stories are like being on a carnival ride. I'm sitting in a car on a roller-coaster, and maybe the OC is sitting next me. I'm experiencing the story more deeply than strictly canon stories, but my connection with the OC is no deeper than say, my connection with Katniss Everdeen when I read The Hunger Games. Sometimes 3rd person, sometimes first person.

Reader x canon Reader/Canon (or Reader x/ OC) is like putting on a VR helmet. I don't get much physical input about the "Reader OC" because I'm experiencing the story through their eyes. I don't expect the reader to be me, but there's a bigger feeling of immersion to be had. Some description might happen cause it's relevant to the story, and it's still a type of ride, I can't jump the rails on the roller coaster, after all. (Even with a VN you still follow the tracks). Sometimes first person, sometimes second person (I'm partial to 2nd person perspective, but that's just me).

I love Fan Fiction, I love it. All of it, and man even more than anything, what I love is that I'm going to dislike 80% of it. Because that 80% was written for someone who is not me. (Hell, that number's probably closer to 99% if we're looking at ALL fandoms, but I digress).

Second - The VENT:

What got me the most in the post that prompted this, was someone saying "Bring back the Mary Sue OCs!" and then they went on to describe something more detailed, and I just -

Look, respectfully, fuck you.

The point is, you're not going to be happy no matter what. Whether it's "mary sue" OCs, or x readers, or alternative universes, or a ship you don't like, you're going to find something to be unhappy about.

Cause people have been bitching about all styles of fan fiction since the first "You've Got Mail" chimed in 1991. And until 1998 and ff.net you really had to hunt for it, and until 2007 and Ao3 the idea of tagging a fic for any reason wasn't really a thing. Every click was a surprise! \o/

I just have seen the same song and dance a dozen times. It's exhausting. People become okay with OCs and decide x readers are the enemy, and before that OCs were *all* Mary Sues and cringe and people who made OCs were the enemy, and before OCs people who wrote even a little OOC were the enemy, and people who wrote AUs were the enemy, and you can write fan fic but it HAS to be Canon Compliant, and everyone MUST be in-character at all times - "They would not fucking say that" was the enemy.

Look, just please - please - in any capacity, stop it with the "All X style of story telling is crap" mindset. There's over a dozen different ways to do x readers alone. I know 20 x reader writers and I don't think any of us have the same style, preferences, or vibes.

I've had a lot of comments along the lines of "I thought I hated x readers, but I really loved this." on a few different fics I've written. Sometimes it's not the style of the fic, sometimes it's the style of the writer, and my Brother In Christ - you're going to have to read some awful shit to shuffle through the thousands of writers out there to find the vibes that resonate with you.

Ostracizing entire swathes of fan fic because you need something to be "The Enemy" so you can lift up something else, and then bitching you can't find anything new to read seems like a personal problem.

And I know y'all are scrolling by TONS of posts that don't interest you, every day, as a matter of course. So don't give me that "clogging up the tag" BS, because we deserve to be here same as anyone else in the fandom.

I wish fanfiction was a more lucrative business, like if it paid the bills I would just write 24/7 and release a ton of content (bc it’s not like i don’t have ideas i just don’t have the time to type them)

I know I could become a writer or whatever but I don’t want to have to change my shit and write about an original character, I like writing about my blorbo

So I guess ultimately I wish we lived in a society where people were paid well enough to live comfortably and be able to throw extra money around at things like arts and creative writing

gn reader x bowser fan fic third chapter

After being brought to your room you're unable to sleep. Seems someone has come to check on you...I wonder who it could be?

As Kamek and Jr. Take you to your room your brain starts to wander to places you'd rather it not go.

Your home...

Your world...

Though this world may be cartoony video game fun back home, it's still full of dangers and harm can easily come to a human like you even with your knowledge of this world.

Knowledge is one thing but experience is another

Feelings of fear and despair start to creep in. But as you arrive at your room, you realize that things might not be as bad as you thought.

The room is spacious, with the most comfortable looking bed you've ever seen, a small table and chairs in the middle of the room, and you notice there's even a balcony overlooking the castle grounds.

Kamek and Jr. look at you expectantly, waiting for your reaction.

"Uh, wow. This is...nice," you say, still a little shell-shocked.Kamek chuckles.

"Yes, well, Bowser may be ruthless, but he's not completely heartless. He understands the importance of keeping his guests comfortable."

You smile softly as Jr. enthusiastically waves wishing you "sum good sleep."

As they leave the room and close the door, an exhausted sigh leaves you as you flop onto the bed. (You were definitely right about it being comfortable)

You may be trapped in a strange world, but at least you have a decent place to stay for now.

You sit up and look out at the balcony, feeling a sense of dread wash over you. This may be a nice room, but you still don't know how to get back home or if you even can.

You spend the night tossing and turning. Unable to sleep despite how comfortable the bed is and how exhausted you are.

You sigh curling in on yourself, drowning yourself in the massive covers. Just trying not to break down but failing rather miserably.

As you lie there in the darkness, the weight of uncertainty and fear begins to weigh down hard on you, making it hard to breathe. You feel trapped and hopeless. Tears start to pinprick at the edges of your eyes. Suddenly, a soft knock at the door startles you. You quickly get out of bed and make your way to the door, wiping the tears from your face.

You open the door to find the king himself standing there, looking down at you with concern. "You do know it is very late right? I heard some noises as assumed you were still awake. Seems I was right... A-are you okay?" he asks.

You hesitate, you don't know how to answer. "I... I don't know," you admit.

He nods, his expression sympathetic. "I know it's hard being trapped here, but you're not alone. I promised Jr. I would help you find a way back home."

"I've already asked Kamek to start looking for ways to help." He says with a reassuring tone.

His words help to calm your frayed nerves, and you feel a flicker of hope in your heart.

"Thank you," you say, suddenly feeling grateful for the small kindnesses that have been shown to you so far.

Bowser smiles warmly. "Don't worry. We'll figure it out together."

With those words, he turns and heads back to his own room, leaving you feeling a little less alone in this strange, unfamiliar place. You crawl back into bed, feeling slightly more at ease, and slowly drift off to sleep.
