"Peter, is your social worker in that horse?" remains the single best line amongst all the best lines in this fucking show...even with the unhinged Hannigram moment that follows

I thought I'd break up the latest run of weird asks you got by some good old Hannibal appreciation^^
What are the details you like most about the show? I love Hannibal's office, the architecture, the colours, the fabrics, all of it. I love the many different sitting areas, and how they are coded differently by intimacy and who gets to be where.
I love the lighting in the Italy episodes, it feels very much like being there again in some scenes. I love Hannibal's shocking boldness once he drops the veil. It feels very alien and refreshing. I love all the sensual things in Dolarhyde's home, and the tiger stripes in the zoo. I love Molly's nose, and the crocheted blankets in their home.
How about you?
OK, I'll try to think of one thing that I particularly enjoy from every season.
S1--After Franklyn touches Hannibal's knee in "Sorbet," the next episode shows the two therapy chairs have been moved about twenty miles apart. They never address it at all (and mostly the chairs just seem to move randomly by episode), but I love the implications of this one particular bit.
Tumblr media
Franklyn gonna have to grow some looooong arms.
S2--The thing I love most about S2 is actually the music, especially that mournful kind of Asian-sounding music they used a lot on the first half of the season when Will was so terribly alone. But the other parts of the music I liked as well--the slow percussion hits that came when they each started acting more like the other, and the intimacy of the background music in the scene in "Su-zakana" when they're in the car.
Tumblr media
You can kind of feel like you're just riding along in the back seat of Hannibal's car as we get ready to go engage in some horseplay.
Honorable mention to the eyeball mural looking at God, which is possibly the most literary thing I've ever seen in any media, ever. But the music wins for just how it carries the tone of the season so beautifully.
S3--Ofc my favorite thing about S3 is the firefly man and the implications that Will never needs to tell Hannibal about it and Hannibal never needs to learn about from Will because Will actually went back in time in Hannibal's memory palace and put it there, and that's why Hannibal is the way he is, and where that notion of transformation and change was birthed in him.
Tumblr media
I've written about this extensively in the past so no need to go over it again, but it's a really cool notion, and I like it better for it seeming to have been an inadvertent result of details ending on the cutting room floor that would have changed the meaning, had they shown up in the show.

Hannibal sent Randall to Will as a gift
So I've been rewatching Hannibal AGAIN and yesterday was the first time that I realised something.
S2E9 "Shiizakana"
The Episode focuses heavily on Will's murder fantasies. It starts with Will dreaming about killing Hannibal. He openly states in the therapy session that he regrets letting Hannibal stop him from killing Clark Ingram.
WILL GRAHAM: I regret what I did in the stables.
HANNIBAL: Then you were lucky I was there.
WILL GRAHAM: Being lucky isn't the same as making a mistake. Allowing you to stop me was a mistake.
HANNIBAL: Then it's not your actions that you
regret. It's the lack thereof.
WILL GRAHAM: That would be more accurate.
Hannibal then proceeds to ask Will to imagine what he would've liked to do instead - his perfect outcome of this missed opportunity. Will fantasises pulling the trigger.
The important part about that is the feeling Will gets when he kills someone. He craves this feeling of power and Hannibal actively encourages this, almost orders Will to hold onto that feeling of power, to remember it.
WILL GRAHAM: A missed opportunity. To feel like I felt when I killed Garret Jacob Hobbs. To feel like I felt when I thought I killed you.
HANNIBAL: And what does that feel like, Will? Excitement bumping in your chest like a cold medallion?
WILL GRAHAM: I felt a quiet sense of power.
HANNIBAL: Good. Remember that feeling.
This is exactly what Hannibal wants from Will. He wants to see this side of him, knowing that Will feels the most alive, feels the most like himself. He feels powerful and just.
And what does Hannibal do after Will confesses that not killing Clark was a missed opportunity?
He creates a new opportunity for Will! He sends Randall Tier after Will to give Will the opportunity to kill, to feel this incredible again.
During my first few times I always thought that Hannibal just sends Randall after Will as an "act of reciprocity" to quote him directly.
But I don't think that alone is the case. I think that Hannibal wanted to give Will the gift to feel this powerful again.
"OFF Hannibal surprised by Will Graham a second time --
-- and pleased."
In the next Episode it gets even more clear when Hannibal says "one positive action begets another" when they talk about it. Hannibal sees it as a positive thing that they both basically sent a serial killer to the other. And what makes this even more beautiful is the way Hannibal carefully and gently cleans Will's hands afterwards.
Hannibal didn't do this because he wanted a little sort of revenge, he did this to give Will what he craves most. It was a gift.

no episode makes me hate Hannibal Lecter as much as Su-Zakana does. he can be a dick to Will if they both want but I draw the line at not allowing Will to kill the social worker aka the worst person in the whole entire show.
