On 26th March 1797, James Hutton, the Scottish chemist and geologist, died.
Farmer and naturalist James Hutton is credited with being the founder of modern geology. The first to determine that the Earth is millions of years old, Hutton believed our planet is continually being formed. James Hutton was born in Edinburgh in 1726. He went on to study medicine and chemistry at Edinburgh University, and in Paris and Leiden. He took his degree in 1749.
In 1750 he returned to Edinburgh and resumed chemical experiments with friend James Davie. Their work on the production of sal ammoniac – a salt used for dying and working with brass and tin – led to a profitable partnership. Hutton moved to Slighhouses, a lowland family farm, in the 1750s. He spent 14 years running the farm. This gave him an interest in how land changed with the forces of wind and rain.
In 1753 Hutton became interested in studying the surface of the earth. He went on to devote his scientific knowledge, powers of observation and philosophical mind to the newly-named subject of ‘geology’.
Hutton went on a geological tour of the north of Scotland with George Maxwell-Clerk (the great-grandfather of the famous physicist James ) in 1764. He let his farms to tenants in 1768 and returned to Edinburgh. Between 1767 and 1774 he was closely involved with the construction of the Forth and Clyde canal.
Travels in Britain and abroad, as well as a time farming in Berwickshire, gave Hutton the opportunity to observe different rocks. He was intrigued to find fossilised shells high above sea level, and puzzled over other geological features. Hutton’s thinking was then influenced by reading about Joseph Black’s experiments with heated limestone, and by the proof of the power of heat demonstrated by James Watt’s steam engines. Hutton began considering the centre of the Earth as a massive heat source, where continuous processes destroy and reform rocks — the 'uniformitarian’ theory of geology. That led to his belief that the Earth was millions of years old.
Other scientists and philosophers vehemently disagreed with him. Many of these were 'catastrophists’ who believed that changes in geology happened as a result of natural disasters such as volcanic eruptions or floods. The debate continued for several decades during the 19th century, until finally geologists became reconciled to Hutton’s theory.
In 1785 Hutton presented his findings to the newly formed Royal Society of Edinburgh. He died on 26 March 1797 and was buried in Greyfriars Kirkyard in Edinburgh in the part of the graveyard known as the “Covenanters Prison”
Five years after Hutton’s death, mathematician John Playfair published 'Illustrations of the Huttonian Theory of the Earth’. This volume contained a summary of Hutton’s 'Theory of the Earth’ alongside numerous additional illustrations and arguments.
In a poll, James Hutton was voted the seventh most popular Scottish scientist from the past. It is remarkable that men like Hutton , David Hume, Adam Smith, Dugald Stewart, Thomas Reid, and countless others all came out of Scotland in the same era, all within less than a hundred year period, their thoughts and works were spread throughout an ever growing world as part of the Scottish diaspora, the era became known as The Scottish Enlightenment.
Pics are of Hutton, the statue is on The Scottish Portrait Gallery in Edinburgh and the James Hutton Memorial Garden, which I have to admit have never visited, even though I have regularly taken a shortcut through Viewcraig Gardens, where it is situated.

Hydronia “Helium” Effervescent
Age: 23
Height: 5’ 6”
Gender: Genderfluid (predominantly goes by She/Her)
Irascible, disputatious, and allocentric- Hydronia is a bragging berserker who’d rather solve her problems with her fists and hydrogen pellet rifles.
Once an average high schooler studying abroad from home country of Algeria, Hydronia contracted a rare form of the bubonic plague in an incident of chemical warfare.
She spent months in a medically induced coma to halt the progression of the disease to minimal avail. Transported to Mugen’s experimental medical facility, her body had decayed beyond any traditional medical care and with zero means of saving her life the surgeons performed a last ditch surgery based on the results they’d done years prior.
Using untainted cells, they replicated crucial components of her body using biological-nanotechnologies. Including numerous essential organs and limbs that had rotted to the point of being unrecognizable. These nanobots obliterated the plague and eradicated it, even as it began fusing with her very genes.
Months later, she awakened and after months of physical therapy and learning to accept her new body, returned to a sense of normalcy. Though ostracized for her personality and seen as a Frankenstein’s monster by students of her new institution-
She cared not for this mistreatment, for the ones who would inevitably treat her like true family were the people who truly mattered in her heart.
At Mugen, she studies biomedical engineering and chemicals manufacturing.

Week 0: Longest Day of My Life
Hej! I am Jiwoo Kim, who is a junior studying Chemical Engineering. I’m so excited to write about my IPE study abroad through the DIS program for the next couple of months!
A picture of me and Melo!
It is my fourth day in Stockholm and I already have tons of memories and tips to share with you all. But since it’s the first post, I’ll just talk about my crazy first day in Stockholm as a teaser for my future posts.
Preparing my flight to Stockholm
As a person who likes to pack EVERYTHING, I had SO MUCH to pack for 4 whole months. I didn’t want to bring too many suitcases that would make me regret my life decisions while I’m trying to walk and pull my luggage through the cobblestone roads piled with snow. So it ended up with one overweight checked baggage (*$65 fee for international SAS flight if under 28kg), a carry-on, and a backpack.
On the way to Sweden
Arriving in Sweden
When I arrived in Sweden, people from the DIS Stockholm program were right outside the gate to greet me and give me instructions on how I would be going to my housing. When about 40 or so DIS students gathered, we took a short train ride followed by a taxi that took us straight to the Studentboende apartment. All the transportation was arranged and paid for by the DIS, which was easy and relaxing!
Normal streets in Stockholm looked like this. Can you believe it?
Housing
My housing is the Högalidsgatan apartment where both DIS and local students live together. It is one of the oldest buildings in Stockholm, rich in history, located on an island called Södermalm. 10-minute walk to the Metro and the ICA, which is a supermarket that sells various goods and food. DIS provided $600 worth of ICA gift cards as a food stipend for the semester, which convinced me to shop for groceries and cook even when I had never done it before.
Cozy double room with our own bathroom and kitchenette!
Almost right after we arrived, we were given information about transportation, phone, keys, etc. I unpacked a little bit and went directly to the housing tour.
Apartment view from the window. I couldn't believe it <3
I met a lot of students and we shared our excitement for the special semester in Stockholm! Everyone was very friendly and wanted to hang out as soon as possible. I attentively listened to the extensive recycling process (sustainability is THE THING in Europe) and the closest train station. My roommate arrived soon after the tour and we went shopping at ICA with my new apartment friends together. We did some heavy grocery shopping, “cooked” dinner (meaning we toasted bread to make a sandwich with pesto, cheese, and ham), and prepared to go to bed. Well, we tried to go to bed.
I swear it tasted better than it looks like...
Well, we tried to go to bed.
All we wanted was clean towels and bedding to wrap up a long long day, so we put them in the washing machine. And guess what we saw when we went back to dry them. All the washing machines (with our stuff) and dryers (with another person’s stuff) were locked! Although this meant we were not sleeping anytime soon, my roommate and I took it as a learning experience and searched for resources. Thanks to the machine breaking down, we learned how to submit a FixIt request! It helped us get rid of jet lag by forcing us to stay up late. And we also learned that the maintenance people are sooo nice and are on top of things. They called me in less than thirty minutes after I submitted the request. Although it was a Saturday night, they responded quickly and assured us that they would resolve our problem. In fact, we did get new sheets and towels not long after the call. We were able to fall asleep as soon as we showered.
This was a summary of my hectic first day in Stockholm. I hope you enjoyed it, and I will follow up with more exciting events next week!
Hey då,
Jiwoo Kim

MIT students build connections with Black and Indigenous Brazilians to investigate culture and the environment
New Post has been published on https://thedigitalinsider.com/mit-students-build-connections-with-black-and-indigenous-brazilians-to-investigate-culture-and-the-environment/
MIT students build connections with Black and Indigenous Brazilians to investigate culture and the environment
In January 2024, at the height of Brazil’s summer, a group of 20 MIT undergraduates will arrive in São Paulo, Brazil, for the Independent Activities Period (IAP) course WGS.247/21L.592 (Race, Place, and Modernity in the Americas) jointly offered by the School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences’ programs in Women’s and Gender Studies, Literature, and Writing.
Continuing a program developed in 2019 and launched as a special course in 2020, the three-week course offers students opportunities to study how American and Brazilian Black and Indigenous writers, artists, and filmmakers’ art and cultural activism — particularly women’s — can impact racial justice and environmental issues.
The class will visit historical sites, cultural centers, nature reserves, and museums while also engaging in conversations with local scholars, activists, religious leaders, community organizers, and artists.
By mixing classroom discussions with on-site exploration and cross-cultural exchanges, the course offers innovative pedagogy that is experiential (learning by doing), immersive (learning within an environment), and interdisciplinary (learning across different fields).
An immersive course, years in the making
Joaquin Terrones ’99, a lecturer in literature and women’s and gender studies, was already teaching this material when he considered expanding its scope. “It seemed like the natural next step was to take students to Brazil so they could experience its incredible culture, art, and activism for themselves,” he remembers.
In 2019, he and Wyn Kelley, a senior lecturer in literature, received a Higher Education Innovation grant from the MIT Jameel World Education Lab (J-WEL) to develop the course and teach it as a special subject the following year.
Generous support from MIT-Brazil, the Office of Minority Education, and MindHandHeart completed its transformation into a full-fledged course in women’s and gender studies, literature, and writing as part of MIT’s Independent Activities Period (IAP) last January.
Helen Elaine Lee, a professor in MIT’s Comparative Media Studies/Writing program, co-taught the subject in its first full year, sharing her experiences using creative practices to further social justice.
Undergraduates from across MIT’s five schools, particularly Black, Latino, LGBTQ+, and first-generation college students, have enrolled. This outreach is important because some studies have shown students from these groups are underserved by study abroad programs, participating at significantly lower rates.
“Our students want spaces like the one created by this course to think deeply and collectively about the daunting array of crises we face, from catastrophic climate change to entrenched violence against communities of color,” says Terrones.
No day at the beach … well, maybe one or two
Although a few weeks in South America during January might sound like a vacation, the course is rigorous and intense, packing a semester’s worth of material into three weeks. Students spend mornings in seminar-style discussions, head out across the city for field trips in the afternoon, and return to their residences in the early evening for a few hours of readings or screenings.
For Tamea Cobb, a senior double majoring in chemical engineering and literature, the class trip to Rio led to an epiphany. “I remember waking up super early to watch the sunrise on the beach, where we saw a man practicing capoeira, an Afro-Brazilian martial art form disguised to look like dancing by enslaved Africans forbidden from practicing martial arts. We had just learned about capoeira the week prior, so it was a beautiful full-circle moment.”
In addition to class outings in São Paulo and Rio, students also organize their own weekend trips within Brazil to places such as Salvador, the unofficial capital of Afro-Brazilian culture, and Inhotim, a vast open-air art museum and botanical garden in the middle of the Atlantic Forest.
Beyond Brazil
The course’s impact continues well after its completion as participants incorporate what they learned into their work and lives.
“The course was a priceless experience that further revealed the interconnectedness of African experiences in the Americas,” says Afura N. Taylor ’21, who double majored in physics and writing. “It has influenced my writing by providing examples of literature and cultural practices that center ancestral memory.”
Educators also see benefits. “I had no idea it would give me a new research project on the presence of Brazil in Black U.S. print culture from the early national period to the present,” says Kelley.
In fact, the course’s success has inspired two new IAP subjects in Brazil this year: 21G.S07 (Language Conversation and Brazilian Culture) by Nilma Dominique from the Global Studies and Languages Section, and 10.496/1.096 (Design of Sustainable Polymer Systems in the Amazon) by Professor Bradley Olsen in the Department of Chemical Engineering.
When asked what makes the course special, Professor Lee describes “[a] unique power [that] derives from rigorous discussions of challenging texts and films that question prevalent assumptions about history and politics, and immersive cultural experiences that open mind and heart, expanding and empowering students who often feel isolated and excluded on MIT’s campus.”
She adds, “In addition to deepening my intellectual and political understanding, this class gave me a profound experience of ancestral recovery that has fed my artistic work. For our Black, Latinx, and LGBTQ+ students, it was a liberatory experience of community. A re-education. A cultural and personal homecoming.”

Sustainability in Action: The Role of Study Abroad Programs
The Sustainability is more than just a trendy term; it is essential for the survival of our planet. It involves meeting today's needs without jeopardizing the ability of future generations to meet theirs. With the pressing issues of climate change, biodiversity loss, social inequality, and economic challenges, the message is clear: we must act now. However, action is not only the responsibility of policymakers and businesses; it requires the involvement of every individual, including those in international education.
The 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals
In 2015, the United Nations launched the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a global call to action to eradicate poverty, protect our planet, and improve the quality of life for all—both now and in the future. These goals, which aim to be achieved by 2030, are rooted in the principle of leaving no one behind. They provide a comprehensive framework for sustainable development, addressing a broad range of economic, social, and environmental issues.
The realization of the UN SDGs by 2030 hinges on the collective efforts of governments, businesses, NGOs, educational institutions, and the public, working together to create a better future for all.
Explore the Arts and Humanities Programs: https://authentica.com/disciplines/arts-and-humanities/
Why Aligning Study Abroad Programs with the UN SDGs Matters
Study abroad programs have a pivotal role in this global mission. They are not just opportunities for cultural exchange; they are platforms for learning and applying sustainability in real-world settings. When students travel to various parts of the world, they witness the challenges and solutions related to sustainability firsthand. They learn that sustainability is not a one-size-fits-all concept but a complex and evolving field that demands both local understanding and global collaboration.
Programs aligned with the UN SDGs give students the opportunity to be at the forefront of sustainable change. They become active participants rather than passive observers. Through these programs, students can engage in projects that address issues such as clean water, responsible consumption, and community development while promoting gender equality and reducing inequalities.

Sustainability Study Abroad: How Our Programs Aligned with the UN SDGs Impact the World
We envision a world sustained by responsible global citizens. That’s why our academic programs encourage students to explore and engage with one or more UN SDGs, empowering them to make a meaningful global impact. In designing and delivering our programs, we ensure the integration of these essential elements:
Engagement in Real-World Projects and Collaborations Our programs involve hands-on projects that make a tangible difference in local communities. Students collaborate with local organizations, NGOs, and businesses, gaining practical experience in implementing sustainable practices. For instance, our program "Water Poverty in Rural India" allows engineering students to tackle water scarcity challenges. They participate in water conservation initiatives, using water test kits to measure chemicals and dissolved solids, and learn from both ancient and modern water storage solutions. Additionally, they witness the positive impact of local NGOs' water conservation efforts in rural areas like Rajasthan and Haryana.
Application of Academic Knowledge for Broader Impact Our study abroad programs shift the focus from merely acquiring knowledge to using it for meaningful, far-reaching change. Students are encouraged to apply their classroom learning in real-world contexts, bridging the gap between theory and practice. For example, our "Humanitarian Engineering Internship in Singapore" offers engineering students the chance to work on projects with social enterprises, addressing critical challenges related to sustainability and inclusivity. Alongside academic growth, students experience local culture through guided immersions, setting the stage for personal exploration of the city and country.
Fostering Global Sustainability Awareness Our programs are carefully crafted to expose students to diverse strategies that different countries employ to promote sustainability. By studying abroad, students gain firsthand insight into innovative and culturally unique sustainable practices. For instance, our program "Sustainability in South Korea" immerses students in the country's sustainability and social enterprise landscape through interactions with leaders, policymakers, and experts in the field.
This global perspective enables students to draw parallels and contrasts with their own country's practices and challenges. It inspires them to think creatively about how these international strategies can be adapted and applied within their own domains.

A Step Towards a Sustainable Future
Sustainability study abroad is more than just a program; it is a pathway to a sustainable future. It empowers students to take the lead in addressing global challenges and making a difference. As we continue to align these programs with the UN SDGs, we are not only educating students but also shaping the future custodians of our planet. The most popular subjects in Australia also happen to be in the country’s biggest growth sectors. This is partly the case because Australia is very keen to integrate graduates with the skills they are looking for into high-demand sectors of relevant industries!
Let’s have a quick look at why the return on investment of studying in Australia – including your future career opportunities – makes the cost of studying abroad worth it.

Here are some of the highest-demand fields to study in Australia for your future career. Consider a course subject list in these fields to set you up for professional success!
Computer Science and Information Technology
Opportunities in this field will rapidly increase in the next several years, with the Australian government estimating that this sector’s growth will outpace all other sectors. 40% of overall work opportunities by 2026 are likely to constitute ICT security, database administration, and systems administration roles alone.

Salary Ranges: AUD 115,579 per year (average)
Can I Study Abroad in Australia on a Budget?
Realistically, options to study in Australia for free for international students are rare. But that does not mean you can’t find Australian degree options within your budget, especially if you score a scholarship!
“Affordability” is relative and depends on your circumstances. Nonetheless, tuition fees in Australia can range quite widely depending on:
· The size and prestige of the university – the bigger and more prestigious, the higher the tuition fees tend to be
· Whether the university is public or private – private university tuition fees tend to be higher than public university fees
· The location of the university – universities in cities with higher costs of living tend to be more expensive
· Your program – highly technical and resource-intensive programs tend to be more expensive
· Your study level – bachelor’s degrees overall can cost more than master’s degrees because of the longer duration
Scholarships to Study in Australia
A 100% scholarship allows you to study in Australia for free for international students. These are highly competitive though, so don’t limit yourself to just these award options. Australian universities offer plenty of generous scholarship options that can help reduce the financial pressure of a degree abroad, such as:
· Global Citizens Scholarship (International) – University of Adelaide
· International Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship (100%) – Deakin University

Rounding Up
While it may not be possible to study in Australia for free for international students, the payoff will be more than worth it. Australian universities stay highly responsive to industry needs, meaning employability is a core consideration in their curricula.
