327 goes into… just about everything: Part 3. Avanti II, 1965. When Studebaker stopped making the Avanti on December 20, 1963 local Studebaker dealer bought the model name, tooling and production rights. They restarted manufacture of the Raymond Loewy designed Avanti choosing to power it with a 300hp version of Chevrolet's 327ci small block V8.

Car Spot: 1987 Studebaker Avanti

It came too late to save Studebaker. The Avanti is my spot this week.

Its design started on the back of an envelope during an airplane flight I love this story because it’s about an American automotive manufacturer that swung for the fence to save the company, much like AMC which I’ve written about many times on car spots here. Imagine this study in contrasts:

It's at some small-town diner of the "old school," where we find in the parking lot no less than Top Cat's vintage 1963 Studebaker Avanti, with clowder on a road trip, parked right next to Penelope Pitstop's #5 Compact Pussycat per Wacky Races.

Both are on separate road trips of their own volitation, and neither are aware of the other's presence in close proximity. Yet inside, both parties could be imagined seating close to each other over lunch.
