Blood Like Mine by Stuart Neville
You need blood like your own. Blood like mine.
Stuart Neville's Blood Like Mine is a dark and bloody tale about mothers and daughters, the blurred lines of good and evil, right and wrong; a road-tripping serial killer thriller that executes its supernatural elements with a gritty reality that instills each and every moment with a sense of nerve-shattering tension and inevitable dread; and ultimately, a gripping horror story about uncontrollable hunger and the desperate lengths to which parents will go to protect their children from the monsters of this world.
I thoroughly enjoyed this one. Neville wholly understands the connection between this mother and daughter, and fills their journey with as much emotional weight as he does vicious, bloody violence. This book feels like a visceral blend of Jeff Nichols' Midnight Special, Kim Jee-woon's I Saw the Devil & Tomas Alfredson's Let the Right One In as shot by Jeff Cronenweth. In other words, Blood Like Mine was pretty much tonally tailored just for me.
In fact, the only issue I really had throughout the entire book was how one-dimensional the FBI Agent on the hunt became in the back half of the book. I understand it was intentional—an effort to depict him as every bit of a hunger-controlled monster as the one he's hunting—but it still bothered me... a lot. He ended up feeling wasted, and if not for Neville's handling of him—especially going into the final 'showdown'—this book would've very likely landed atop (or damn-near) My Favorite Books of 2024 list.
"She's such a sweet soul, so kind, so loving. Whatever happens next, you remember that."
8/10

Gary Neville is a REF
So inspired by this. Working on a WIP, another which may it see the light of day someday. An AU where Gary gets kicked out the the United youth academy and becomes a referee instead. Carra has his Liverpool career.
[[Absolutely inspired by this marvelous fic here as well, where both of them became refs instead of footballers, please give it love: PLAY THE WHISTLE by saltstreets ]] credit: @zevons
Snippet of my WIP here.....
-----------------------------------------------
“It’s a fuckin’ shambles, Gaz.”
Gary should’ve known better than to answer his phone. It’s a beautiful day for football. Which has fuck all to do with Gary. Gary’s on holiday. At home maybe, but it still counts. He’d even had a lie-in ‘til nearly half seven.
He doesn’t, won’t, can’t hold back a weary sigh, soul-deep. He’s got a headache already. Worse, he already knows he won’t say no in the end.
Still.
“I can’t fuckin’ do it, Stuart. I’m on holiday.”
“What, in fuckin’ Bury?”
“How d’you know I’m still in Bury? Maybe I’m in Ibiza!”
“Fuck you are, you boring cunt. You’ve probably been in the back garden, tellin’ the daisies which way to grow.”
“Fuck off.” They both laugh, it’s fucking true innit.
“Fuck me.” He can’t do it. He will do it.
“Already got me lad on the way, son. He’ll scoop you up, you’ll be on the pitch in thirty. Lovely day for it.”
“They’ll not go for it, Stu.” For fucking obvious reasons. “Raffa won’t, anyways.”
“Already had it out with ‘em, you mong, ‘course I have. Sir Alex and Raffa are well up for it. Talked you up, didn’t I? No one I’d trust to do the job right. Sterling lad, absolutely professional he is, our Gary Neville, no one else for it.”
“No one else stupid enough to take it on, you mean.”
“Right you are, son!”
Stuart laughs some more at Gary’s pain. It’s a thing they do. “It don’t hurt you’re a short taxi ride away, either.”
“This is mad, this is.” Gary shakes his head. “If the scousers even let me off the pitch in one piece, I’m gonna get absolutely killed by the fans, no matter the result. Both sides, probably.”
“Yeah. But you’ll be golden in my books, Nev, don’t you worry about that.”
Gary feels a bit sick. “This is me fucked, you understand that, right?”
“Listen,” Stuart actually sounds worryingly sincere. “I wouldn’t ask it if we didn’t need you, Gaz. Really. I know it’s unorthodox, but I’ve made everything absolutely crystal with the managers. The press is being made aware. It’s the wrong time of year for a re-play, innit. Everyone wants to play today. I’ll protect you, lad, I swear it. It’ll be alright.”
He can see it now: Ex-Academy Player Officiates Derby Match, Ripped to Pieces By Former Teammates and Blood-Thirsty Scousers Alike!!
Gary tries to grasp at anything to make the situation better in his mind. “It’ll be Keane and Gerrard to captain, I assume?”
There’s a suspicious pause. Stuart sounds mildly apologetic.
“Err, well. Gerrard’s out today, actually, knee’s acting up again. It’ll be Carragher in his place.”
Oh, well, fuck Gary Neville then. Just fuck him all day long.
“Oh, well, that’s more good news then, Stuart. The only moderately sane man in Liverpool is out on injury, in his stead an Actual Fucking Lunatic.” He is absolutely insane is Carragher. “Between him and Keane, it’s gonna be sunshine and fucking daisies. I can’t wait to be spoken to with nothing but dignity and respect for ninety minutes.”
Suddenly, Gary hears the desperate honks of a car horn idling impatiently just outside the kitchen window. Stuart must hear it over the phone, he sounds absolutely elated to ring off.
“That’ll be our Dave, then. Off you go, Gaz, that’s a good lad! Don’t forget your whistle, you’re gonna need it today, sure!”
Christ.
It’s gonna be a fuckin’ shambles.

Book recs for anyone else upset that Near Dark is one 1.5 hour long movie with an almost unwatchable last ten minutes.

Below the cut, I've listed each title with an author and synopsis.
Please consider buying from your local independent bookseller. If you're not sure about any near you, or if you would like to support independent booksellers (and therefore authors!) by ordering online instead, you can search your area at https://www.indiebound.org/
I am not affiliated with IndieBound and don't get any money from sharing this link.
See more notes at the end of the list.
I Travel By Night by Robert McCammon. This is technically the sub-genre of "Weird Western" rather than horror; a Civil War soldier turned vampire wanders a strange west. Mysteries, ghosts, etc. Despite being from a major voice in speculative fiction, this is only available in digital.
The Buffalo Hunter Hunter by Stephen Graham Jones. A First Nations vampire revenge story. If you don't know the historical event it was based off of, I'd suggest going in blind but following up your read with non-fiction: this one is heavy.
In the Valley of the Sun by Andy Davidson. Pitch-black neo-noir Texas vampire novel. Takes place almost exactly in the same locales as Near Dark, only set a few years earlier. A killer is turned into a vampire, and hides out on property belonging to a young widow and her son. Gnarly and mean, the prose is rich without being flowery.
The Coffin Moon by Keith Rosson. RELEASE DATE: 9/9/25. Family tragedy, vampires, serial killers, and western vengeance set against a backdrop of the PNW and the Badlands in the 1970s.
Lost Souls by Poppy Z. Brite. Rice is the biggest name in late 20th century vampire literature, but Brite is right behind (note: he has gone by Billy Martin since the 00's, however still prefers the books to be under this name). These guys make the Lost Boys look like The Little Vampire. A punk and shock-goth classic, this southern gothic road trip is well worth the read.
Mongrels by Stephen Graham Jones. Yes, he's on here twice. A young boy travels from town to town with his aunt and uncle; they are werewolves, some of the last of their kind, trying to keep themselves safe and sane by any means necessary.
Blood Like Mine by Stuart Neville. A single mother on the run with her teenage daughter becomes a serial murder suspect as she tries to dodge cops, FBI agents, creeps, and keep her strange daughter fed. The word ''vampire'' is never mentioned, but if you're into vampires to be reading this list, this is not a spoiler.
You're Always Welcome at the Bloodridge Motel by J. Hunter Richardson. A small motel off of the highway plays host over decades to a strange family comprised of people who look like they're from different eras, don't seem to age.
The Bloody Red Barron by Kim Newman. This is #2 in the "Anno Dracula" series, and does heavily rely on knowledge of the first book. An alternate history where Dracula's arrival in England and attempt to take over Europe gets farther than he did in the novel, this one makes the list because Severen actually has a very small cameo on it.
Midwestern Gothic by Scott Thomas. Four midwestern horror novels; there's one specifically that I could see taking place in the same universe as Near Dark.
American Vampire by Scott Snyder. The first volume is told in two timelines: the closing days of the American West that Never Was, and the early days of Hollywood in the 1920s. Skinner Sweet, extremely un-glamorous outlaw, becomes the first American vampire after trying to rob the wrong train. He goes on a killing spree
The Orange Eats Creeps by Grace Krilonovich. Part Outsiders, part Clockwork Orange, and part Near Dark. Teenage ''vampires'' wreak havoc in the Pacific Northwest as they wander in their respective packs. The writing for this is unique and wild and the novel is worth it for that alone.
The Lesser Dead by Chris Buehlman. Another novel where the author went out of his way to make his vampires into monsters, crooks, killers, without the frills and melodrama of the more gothic-leaning stories. Set in NYC in the 1980s.
BONUS NON FICTION: Near Dark by Stacey Abbot. A revisit of the making of, structure, and final story of the film from a pop-culture film and television critic and historian. Part of the BFI Great Films series. Yes, it's more or less a 100 page essay about the film, but if you made it this far in the list, you'd probably enjoy it. The writing wavers between that of a nostalgia review and an actual academic dive into the film.
BONUS NON FICTION: Our Vampires, Ourselves by Nina Auerbach. VITAL reading for vampire fans, tracing the development of the vampire from the early 1800s through Near Dark (a WHOLE academic chapter on the latter!) as a mirror to our own cultural and social turmoils.
Honorable mention to The Morganville Vampires series by the late and great Rachel Caine: she managed to include an evil vampire patriarch, his significantly younger blonde girlfriend, and their leather-clad attack dog/body guard/friend. They're YA novels from the 00s and the writing reflects this, the books didn't age very well, and I'm not sure I'd really suggest them, but damn did she ever pull that off and in the process get an excuse shoved in there to refer to the head vampire as "daddy."
.......if you think I'm reaching on why I'm 99% sure the trio was meant to be the gang from Near Dark, the leader's name was Bishop, and Ms. Caine was a noted Aliens fan--her short story "Broken" actually managed to get a reference in Alien: Romulus.
ADDITIONAL DISCLAIMERS AND DISCLOSURES:
-Why these titles? Because I found a couple of them and realized that there's a hyper-specific genre of vampire novels of (mostly male) authors trying to avoid the cliches of the ''gothic'' vampire novel (at least aesthetically, if we're talking gothic as a mode of literature then nearly all of these are gothic or heavily feature gothic elements).
-I have NOT read all of these, however I DO own them all, so I cannot personally vouch for most of them. Some that I read I loved despite any flaws, others I didn't care for despite them being ''good'' and three I'm still in the middle of. Unless someone specifically asks for books that I have enjoyed, I try not to let personal opinion influence recs.
-These are all adult horror novels, please check trigger warnings first.

Best Reads of 2024
this year i read 300 books. which i think is impressive but not as impressive as it sounds bc many of these books were very short, easy reads meant to be like, stuff you read at the airport or sitting by the pool on vacation. so it's not like i was tackling the harvard classics. i also read extremely fast; it only takes me about an hour to do 300 pages unless it's a super dense complex text. that said, here is a list of all the books i read this year that i would rate 4 stars or higher, separated by genre: Fantasy/Magical Realism: The Tainted Cup by Robert Jackson Bennett Highfire by Eoin Colfer Tehanu by Ursula K. Below the cut I have made a list of each English and British monarch, the age of their mothers at their births, and which number pregnancy they were the result of. Particularly before the early modern era, the perception of Queens and childbearing is quite skewed, which prompted me to make this list. Happy Birthday Christopher Brookmyre, born in Glasgow, September 6th 1968.
Brookmyre was raised and schooled in Barrhead, attending St. Mark’s Primary School and St. Luke’s High School, before attending the University of Glasgow. He has worked for the film magazine Screen International, and as sub-editor for The Scotsman and the Edinburgh Evening News.
Christopher is the author of eighteen published novels to-date, the latest being Dead Girl Walking.
In 2006 Christopher won the seventh Bollinger Everyman Wodehouse Prize for Comic Fiction with All Fun and Games Until Someone Loses An Eye and, as is tradition, a Gloucestershire Old Spot pig was named after the winning novel. On accepting the award, Christopher said:
“My favourite PG Wodehouse quote is ‘It is seldom difficult to distinguish between a Scotsman with a grievance and a ray of sunshine’; today I’d like to think that I resemble the ray of sunshine.”
His first novel, Quite Ugly One Morning was the winner of the Critics’ First Blood Award for Best First Crime Novel of the Year in 1996. The book was made into a TV drama where James Nesbit was in my opinion miscast as the lead character Jack Parlabane, Brookmyre himself wanted Douge Henshall, who of course went on to star in Shetland.
The short story “Bampot Central” was shortlisted for the Crime Writers’ Association Macallan Short Story Dagger in 1997.
Boiling a Frog won the Sherlock Award for Best Comic Detective Novel in 2000 and Christopher became the only writer to win two Sherlocks when Be My Enemy picked up the 2004 prize. In 2007, Christopher was given the Glenfiddich Spirit of Scotland Award for Writing.
Christopher has been shortlisted three times for the Theakstons Old Peculier Crime Novel of the Year Award: in 2007 for All Fun And Games Until Somebody Loses An Eye, in 2008 for A Tale Etched in Blood and Hard Black Pencil and in 2012 for Where The Bodies Are Buried.
In 2005 Christopher was named Young Alumus of the Year by the University of Glasgow. He has subsequently been awarded honorary doctorates by the University of Glasgow and by Edinburgh Napier University.
In 2013 Brookmyre announced, at The Edinburgh Book Festival that his novel All Fun and Games until Somebody Loses an Eye was to be made into a film, but unfortunately it looks as if nothing came of this.
Chris has many fans, one of the most famous must be the author Stephen King who opened last year’s Bloody Scotland crime writing festival brandishing a copy of Brookmyre’s Want You Gone and declaring it: “Fantastic!”
In 2018, Brookmyre wrote The Way of All Flesh with his wife, Dr. Marisa Haetzman. It was published under the pseudonym Ambrose Parry] In 2020, the team followed up with The Art of Dying, and in 2021, A Corruption of Blood.
The Cliff House was released inMay 2023, the book is his 27th in 25 years, the author says “It was a product of the pandemic, of time spent thinking about the people you haven’t seen.”
As well as writitng, Chris is a member of an unlikely musical super-group! The Fun Lovin' Crime Writers also features Val McDermid (vocals),, Mark Billingham (guitar/vocals), Luca Veste (bass), Doug Johnstone (drums/vocals), and Stuart Neville (guitar/vocals) have sold over 20 million books worldwide and won every major crime-writing award.
The supergroup will be taking to the stage om September 8th at the Palace Theatre in Paignton to raise the curtain on the 2023 Agatha Christie Festival, oh andyes, one of the songs the perform is Elvis Costello's Watching the Detecives.

90's Pulp Movie Villains Ranked
SO I am going to be doing a series of rankings ,as I have been marathoing the Pulp superhero trend of the 90's .Why not start with my favorite topic ,the villlains...THis was hard in a sense, because I love all five of these baddies
5.Big Boy Caprice from Dick Tracy
The biggest mob boss in town and arch nemesis to Dick Tracy.I actually though going into this rewatch ,I thought he would be number one ....But looking at the other villains he fell to the wayside.I love how bonkers Al PAcinos performance is and his quirk of messing up qoutes and the makeup looks great but honestly I cant help but feel he is a wannabe of Jack Nicholsons Joker .He is fun though

4.Xander Drax from the Phantom
An evil powerhungry business man who wants to harnass the power of 3 magic skulls .On paper he is the weakest villain, going into this rewatch,I thought I was gonna put him dead last .The problem is the side villains are more intereresting ,like the pirate king Kabai Sengh and Quill who killed the Phantoms father, while Drax is just an evil rich guy ......Thank GOD for Treat Williams performance ,he is taking character description of evil 1930's capitalist and running with it .Not great but he is a ton of fun

3.Neville Sinclair from the Rockateer
A swashbuckling movie star who is actually a Nazi spy trying to get his hands on an experimental jetpack .NOw we get to the really interesting guys .While Big Boy and Drax were fun, theres a bit more to Sinclair .Being a dashing movie star he is charming but his villainy is motivated by a sense of desperation .Timothy Dalton is an actor who feels like he is right of the 1930's and 1940's ,so he is able to nail the deonair side while also being a legit menacing villain

2.Don Rafael Montero from The Mask of Zorro
A Spanish Governor who wishes to take over California ,but the big thing is he stole the daughter of Don Diego De La Vega AKA the original Zorro and had him imprisioned for 20 years .NOw what impresses me about Don Rafael is he couldve been a mustache twirly villain, just a hate sink as we root for Zorro to run him through....But they decided to give him nuanace .Oh he is still a villain who kills and enslaves innocent people ,but he has his own morals ,doesnt want children to see his crimes, and does very much care for his adopted daughter Elena .Stuart Wilson plays him with a sense of dignity and nuance one doesnt often see in a blockbuster bad guy of that era

1. Shiwan Khan from the Shadow
The last descendant of Genghis Khan(I know there are millions of descendants of that guy just roll with it ,its a movie ),Shiwan Khan is a wannabe conqueror who wishes to rule the world using his psychic powers and an atomic bomb.SO while DOn Rafael is a more nuanced villain,Shiwan Khan is a classic supervillain done REALLY well .Like the guys got a simple goal,he wants to rule the world, cause being descended from a great conquerer he wants to be a conqueror himself.A few things make him stand out ,one is John Lones charismatic performance, especially in his scenes with the Shadow .In classic villain fashion he is a dark reflection of the Shadow.....But of the Shadows past .The Shadow used to be a bad dude but has put his sins behind him to fight evil .Basically Shiwan Khan has all the powers of the Shadow and is what the Shadow would be like is he still pursued evil. What I love is Shiwan Khan actually admires the Shadows past and is diappointed he has turned good cause he really wants him to rule with him .He also reminds me of Kilgrave from Jessica Jones in how he uses his mind control powers to convince people to kill themselves who mildly inconvience him .With cool powers ,a good performance and a great dynamic with the hero ,I think Shiwan Khanis one of the most underrated supervillains in superhero movies and best villain of the 90's pulp movies trend
