Saint Cosmas and Saint Damian
Died: 287
Feast Day: September 26 (New), September 27 (Trad)
Patronage: Doctors, Physicians, Pharmacists, Surgeons, Barbers, Dentists
Saints Cosmas and Damian were twin brothers and skilled doctors born in Cilicia, Turkey. The brothers gave their services for free and in the process attracted many souls to the then growing number of Christian converts through their daily work and pious life. They treated the poor and wealthy alike without payment, earning the title “The Silverless Ones.” During the period of Christian persecution by Diocletian, they were arrested and tortured, enduring being hung on a cross, stoned and shot at with arrows. Refusing to relinquish their faith, they were finally beheaded.

A jewel of German Baroque, the Asamkirche, the popular name for the church of St. John of Nepomuk in Munich, is the Asam church chapel.
Built by the Asam brothers, Egid Quirin and Cosmas Damian, between 1733 and 1746 as their private chapel.

In the 80’s Monk James opened his home to HIV AIDS patients, to care for them so they could die in peace. Many hospitals and families didn’t want them.
In those days there was no treatment and HIV / AIDS meant certain death. In spite of this, many were willing to risk their lives to care physically and spiritually for HIV patients in hospice. Monk James told us about a time when a dying communicant vomited up the Holy Gifts, so the priest knelt down and consumed the regurgitated Body and Blood of our Lord and Savior - because the Holy Gifts must always be consumed, no matter what. Over the years Monk James’ ministry housed and cared for over 1500 homeless men with HIV.
Monk James used to say "We seek the face of God in everyone we meet". Please remember the soul of Monk James, abbot of Sts Cosmas and Damian Monastery, who reposed in 2020. May his memory be eternal! [source]

Asamkirche (aka St Johann Nepomuk), Munich, Germany
The Asam Church was built by the two brother artists Egid Quirin Asam and Cosmas Damian Asam as their private church. It was built from 1733 to 1746. It is considered one of Bavaria’s most important examples of the Late Baroque architecture style.

Closeup details of an Ares illustration entry that I made for my Sing O Muse zine contribution last year. Ares, in my version, is often hanging out with Aphrodite and the Graces, Hera + her daughters, and Poseidon the most, either for his warrior bodyguard duty or just running casual errands in his home. Zine is out now, so you better check them out and grab them while you can since they are still piping hot from fresh printing !!!!
The temple background was that of Aphrodite Ourania in Kythera, one of the oldest structures dedicated to her located in mainland Greece dated from the 6th century BC, which was later converted into Agioi Anargyroi church (St. Cosmas & Damian) during Byzantine times.
According to legend, Aphrodite was born from the sea foam stranding to the seashores of Alvemonas Bay of Kythera first before arriving in Paphos, Cyprus. Aphrodite Ourania, as in her “heavenly love” aspect was depicted as an armed warrior goddess within this modest temple right here, and there are still fully preserved walls + niches within the current ruined building along with its Doric columns!!!!
Over on the sight of the divine couple is another chryselephantine statue of Aphrodite Ourania herself, with her foot standing on a tortoise. Made out of gold & ivory, with black stone eyes and carved by the famed Phidias who was known for the Athena Parthenos and Athena Promachos in the Parthenon, Athens; as well as the statue of Zeus of Olympia. (I knew that this statue of Aphrodite Ourania would later be transferred to Elis, in the further northern region of Arcadia, but I still loved it to be standing there, tbh.)

Prayer Before Reading Scripture
Shine within our hearts, loving Master, the pure light of Your divine knowledge and open the eyes of our minds that we may comprehend the message of Your Gospel. Instill in us also reverence for Your blessed commandments, so that having conquered all sinful desires, we may pursue a spiritual life, thinking and doing all those things that are pleasing to You. For You, Christ our God, are the light of our souls and bodies, and to You we give glory together with Your Father who is without beginning and Your all holy, good, and life giving Spirit, now and forever and to the ages of ages. Amen.
Epistle Reading
The Reading is from St. Paul's First Letter to the Corinthians 12:27-31; 13:1-8
Brethren, you are the body of Christ and individually members of it. And God has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then workers of miracles, then healers, helpers, administrators, speakers in various kinds of tongues. Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? Do all possess gifts of healing? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret? But earnestly desire the higher gifts. And I will show you a still more excellent way. If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give away all I have, and if I deliver my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing. Love is patient and kind; love is not jealous or boastful; it is not arrogant or rude. Love does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrong, but rejoices in the right. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends.
Gospel Reading
The Reading is from the Gospel According to Matthew 10:1, 5-8
At that time, Jesus called to him his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal every disease and every infirmity. These twelve Jesus sent out, charging them, "Go nowhere among the Gentiles, and enter no town of the Samaritans, but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. And preach as you go, saying, 'The kingdom of heaven is at hand.' Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, cast out demons. You received without paying, give without pay."

I REMEMBER SOMEONE ONCE THEORISED THE ALTAR TWINS WERE SISTER'S SIBLINGS. I HOPE THEYRE SLEEPING WELL TONIGHT
@thewatcherinthewoods actually brought it up initially in an ask some time back and since then i actually made a second post about it + a current work in progress about sister and nihil raising them together (which will need to be workshopped to hell and back after everything😭)

this was before i knew the twins were both girls (unlike fans have been insisting for years that they’re boy/girl twins like tobias’ kids who played them) and the names i’ve temporarily given them are actually taken from st cosmas and damian, twin saints that happened to be medics (the connection at the time was them aiding old nihil with his oxygen tank).
but ummm yeah i’m actually really happy that they Did end up being siblings i think it’s really sweet and sad
#i wish they had lived to volume three but who knows😭#they might have survived a little longer than that halloween😭#ghost#sister imperator#text#💌

SAINTS&READING: WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 30, 2024

HOLY MARTYRS AND UNMERCENARIES COSMAS and DAMIAN IN CILICIA (4th c.), AND THEIR BROTHERS LEONTIUS, ANTHIMUS, AND EUTROPIUS.
The Martyrs and Unmercenaries Cosmas and Damian in Cilicia (Arabia), and the Martyrs Leontius, Anthimus, and Eutropius. The holy brothers Cosmas and Damian were physicians in Arabia, who believed in Christ. They traveled through the cities and the villages, preaching Christ and healing the sick. The saints would not take any sort of payment for the help they rendered. In Cilicia, pagans seized the holy physicians and led them before the governor, Lysias. Since they refused to renounce Christianity, the governor ordered the saints to be brutally beaten and then cast into the sea.
An angel of God rescued them from the sea and brought them to shore. Then the pagans beheaded the saints and three other Christians: Leontius, Anthimus, and Eutropius.
The Unmercenary Saints Cosmas and Damian of Arabia should not be confused with the Unmercenary Saints Cosmas and Damian of Asia Minor (November 1), or the Unmercenary Saints Cosmas and Damian of Rome (July 1).
TRANSLATION OF THE RELICS (898) OF St LAZARUS "OF THE FOUR DAYS IN THE TOMB", BISHOP OF KITION ON CYPRUS.
The Transfer of the relics of Righteous Lazarus of the Four Days, Bishop of Kiteia on Cyprus, took place in the ninth century. The Righteous Saint Lazarus, the brother of Martha and Mary, lived in the village of Bethany, not far from Jerusalem. During His earthly life, the Lord Jesus Christ often visited the house of Lazarus, whom He much loved and called His friend (John 11:3,11), and when Lazarus had died and lain four days already in the grave, the Lord raised him from the dead (John 11:1-44). (The Church remembers Saint Lazarus on the Saturday of the Sixth Week of Great Lent, “Lazarus Saturday.”)
Many of the Jews, when they heard about this, came to Bethany. Being persuaded of the reality of this most remarkable wonder, they became followers of Christ. Because of this the High Priests also wanted to kill Lazarus. Righteous Lazarus is mentioned in the Holy Gospel once more: when the Lord had come again to Bethany six days before the Passover, Lazarus was also there (John 12:1-2, 12:9-11). After his raising, Saint Lazarus lived another thirty years as a bishop on the island of Cyprus, where he spread Christianity and peacefully fell asleep in the Lord.
The holy relics of Saint Lazarus were discovered in Kiteia. They were in a marble coffin inscribed: “Lazarus of the Four-Days, the friend of Christ.” The Byzantine emperor Leo the Wise (886-911) ordered the transfer of the relics to Constantinople in 898 and their placement within the church of the Righteous Lazarus.

Philippians 1:12-20
12 But I want you to know, brethren, that the things which happened to me have actually turned out for the furtherance of the gospel, 13 so that it has become evident to the whole palace guard, and to all the rest, that my chains are in Christ; 14 and most of the brethren in the Lord, having become confident by my chains, are much more bold to speak the word without fear. 15 Some indeed preach Christ even from envy and strife, and some also from goodwill: 16 The former preach Christ from selfish ambition, not sincerely, supposing to add affliction to my chains; 17 but the latter out of love, knowing that I am appointed for the defense of the gospel. 18 What then? Only that in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is preached; and in this I rejoice, yes, and will rejoice. 19 For I know that this will turn out for my deliverance through your prayer and the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ, 20 according to my earnest expectation and hope that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ will be magnified in my body, whether by life or by death.
Luke 9:44-50
44 Let these words sink down into your ears, for the Son of Man is about to be betrayed into the hands of men. 45 But they did not understand this saying, and it was hidden from them so that they did not perceive it; and they were afraid to ask Him about this saying. 46 Then a dispute arose among them as to which of them would be greatest. 47 And Jesus, perceiving the thought of their heart, took a little child and set him by Him, 48 and said to them, "Whoever receives this little child in My name receives Me; and whoever receives Me receives Him who sent Me. For he who is least among you all will be great." 49 Now John answered and said, "Master, we saw someone casting out demons in Your name, and we forbade him because he does not follow with us." 50 But Jesus said to him, "Do not forbid him, for he who is not against us is on our side."

How did you decide on the name Corentin?
so most of my oc names just pop into my brain. in corentin's case, i was in the shower and i got stuck on "corin" or something that sounds like it, so i poked around in good ol behindthename.com to try to find names that sounded somewhat like that. i actually still have the list of candidates, here:
corbin - "raven"
corentin - hurricane/storm or love
coronis - crow, in mythology the mother of asklepios
cosmin - order, decency. st cosmas and damian, the patron saints of physicians.
as you can see, i was playing with the idea of giving him a name that meant crow or raven to play off "rook" (and because i headcanon him as a shapeshifter). however "corentin" sounded most like what i wanted AND because i was already set on him being a lord of fortune, i was attached to the idea of him being a storm mage. he's also a very sunshiney character, so having love AND hurricane/storm as potential meanings fit perfectly.
#this is actually a good ask i never get to talk about my process with naming characters ^_^#oc: corentin#answered

🌹 Born in the 3rd century in Cilicia, a region in present-day southeastern Turkey, Sts. Cosmas and Damian were twin brothers who were distinguished by their profound knowledge and dedicated Christian faith. Known as the "silverless" or "moneyless" ones, they were physicians who provided their healing services without charge, emphasizing their empathetic and altruistic nature. 🌹
📿 While offering hope and medical comfort, they also disseminated the principles of the Christian faith, leading many towards Christianity. They are often represented as the epitome of holistic healing, restoring both spirit and body. 📿
💒 The brothers encountered hostility due to their Christian beliefs and are believed to have been martyred in the late 3rd century during the times of Diocletian persecution. Their steadfast faith and their commitment to alleviating the pain of others have elevated them to revered positions in Christian lore. 💒
🙏 Their feast day, recognized on September 26th, is a poignant reminder of the essence of altruistic service and the restorative nature of faith. May Sts.
