reading the ‘straight on till morning’ graphic novel rn and WHAT DO YOU MEAN PETER STARTS TO DIE WHEN HE LOOSES HIS SHADOW???? 😭😭😭😭
sure, this twisted tales stories aren’t canon to the 2002 and 1953 movies, but this detail or fact about peter is so interesting to me. its implied that when someone gets a hold of his shadow and harms it, despite the shadow not physically being with peter, he will feel pain. you guys can correct me on this but im pretty sure this also occurred in jatnp?? i mean he doesn’t die or get hurt but he looses his ability to fly and grows weaker. without his shadow; he cant fly. that’s honestly such a sad thing to think about it help 😭😭 neverland’s magic system or sum shit DOES NOT PLAY 😭😭😭
if i had nickel everytime peter almost dies or grows weak due to him loosing his shadow, id have 2 nickles, which is weird that it happened twice 🫡

Picked up a new book
So I've been reading the Disney twisted tales series and they've started adapting some of the books into graphic novels: Part of your world, Straight on till morning, and next year Almost there. Straight on till morning had its graphic adaptation release a month ago and I don't think I've gone through a book this fast in years. I got it from the nearest Barnes and Noble to my house, and read it fast enough that my mom was worried that I wouldn't get $20 dollars worth out of it.
I want to wait and decide on an in depth review on this one and others that I've read but if anyone wants to talk on them feel free.

A Year in (Book) Review: My 2024 Reading Journey 📚
#7 - Straight on Till Morning by Liz Braswell
Fantasy / Twisted Tales #8 / 363 pages / published 2019 / Finished Jan. 14
One Sentence Review: A surprising contender for one of my favorite books in the series, Straight on Till Morning takes the focus off of Pan - and the patriarchy - and puts it on Wendy and Tinkerbell, and it reminds us that Neverland will always have monsters as long as the real world stays broken.
Favorite Quotes
"She didn't need to see her scars to know that they were real."
*
"There was no room for weakness or second thoughts in a hero, and if nothing else, Wendy had to be the hero of her own soul."
*
"She felt a little stirring of self-recrimination: Why hadn't she even thought things like this before? Why hadn’t she even noticed the invisible prison she was in? 'Because,' she told herself gently, 'I've never been able to fly before.'"
*
"Are things broken here? Save this world. Then go back to your own broken world and fix it. Perhaps we shall be mended as well."
*
"'Do as thou wilt,' Slightly quoted back at her. 'We wiln't.'"
My rating: 5/5
A Few More Thoughts (Spoilers)
It was so much better than I thought it would be! Though I nearly rated it 4/5 because of how much I hated the witch, the rest of the book was so solid that I had to keep it at 5.
I was surprised that Peter Pan himself was only in the last quarter of the book, and amazed at how okay I was with that. I also delighted in the depth of the narrative, and the idea that in order Neverland to be better, we must work to make our own world better. I was also far more invested than expected in Wendy and Tink's friendship.
I love how Neverland may be a place where dreams come true - but not all dreams are good dreams, which is why until cruelty and hunger and hate and abuse are no longer a problem in the real world, there will always be monsters in Neverland. (Also, Hook doesn't hate Pan or fear the crocodile, but rather is chasing his youth and is running away from the passage of time as well.)

So I’m working a summer camp/summer school this year, and while my kids are working on their summer packets, I have time to read! It’s been fun, because I’m reading a book a day, which is something i haven’t done in years.
I’m catching up on the “A Twisted Tale” series, so I thought I’d do a ranking of the books I’ve read so far! I’ve just ordered “Go the Distance” and “When You Wish Upon a Star”, so I’ll have the full collection by the end of the week, which is VERY exciting!
So here are the books I’ve read + my ranking/reviews (spoiler-free)(also all of these reviews are my own opinion, so if you like one that i said i wasn’t a fan of, PLEASE remember it’s my opinion):
“As Old As Time”: 10/10 - y’all can’t be surprised that this is my favorite in the series. It was the first one I read, and when i tell you the last section of the book had me sobbing on the train, everything about the story was so wonderfully written, and Adam’s entire character arc just made me fall in love with him more. And just… Belle was perfection. Gaston continues to be one of the most terrifying Disney villains, and Adam and Belle continue to be my absolute favorite Disney Prince/Princess couple.
“Almost There”: 10/10 - ok so I JUST read this one yesterday (because i just bought it lmao) and it was one of the best books I’ve ever read! I loved getting a look at Faclier’s past, and how he came to know his “friends”. Tiana’s entire struggle throughout the story, of the decision she was going between, it was honestly heartbreaking. Also the way Charlotte and Tiana’s friendship was discussed, and the moment at the department store, this whole book was fantastic.
“Reflection”: 10/10 - MULAN AND SHANG MY BELOVEDS!! Seriously, their relationship progressing from begrudging allies, to friends, to having feelings for each other??? I really loved how the entire struggle of Shang finding out that Mulan is a woman, not because of her gender, but because he found out that she lied, and it fit so well with their budding friendship.
“So This Is Love”: 9/10 - listen i love love love a good Cinderella retelling. I honestly have to think that this book took some kind of inspiration from “A Twist in Time”, because it just felt like there were moments in the book that reflected the movie! And given how “A Twist in Time” is honestly one of my favorite Disney movies, it makes sense that I love this book. Charles and Cinderella are so sweet together, and the fact that they establish that Cinderella was at the ball just to have fun and to dance and not to find a prince!!! I loved it so much.
“What Once Was Mine” 8/10 - okay so this was REALLY good, and the little lore insert with the Moon Flower made me SO excited to have references to the TV show. Arianna was a fantastic character, especially since we know so little about her just from the movie itself, and I love the entire underlying theme of mothers and daughters and how their relationships can be so different.
“Conceal, Don’t Feel” 7/10 - I’ll be honest and say this was my least favorite. Frozen was never my favorite Disney movie, but I did like the idea of Anna and Elsa coming together despite being separated after everything happened. The plot was a little forgettable compared to the other installments of the series that I’ve read so far, but I can see how, if you love Frozen, you’ll absolutely adore this book!!
And these are the ones I have left to read (probably in the order I’ll read them):
“Mirror, Mirror”
“Part of Your World”
“Once Upon a Dream”
“Go the Distance”
“Straight in Till Morning”
“When You Wish Upon a Star”
And I’m so so excited for “A Twisted Tale Anthology”, and will be buying it as soon as it’s released! Or I’ll preorder it, but either way, I can’t wait!! (Me and @queen-with-the-quill will definitely have a freak out together once we both read it lmao)

i want to share my five star reads of the year so far. these are the books that made for the most immersive reading experience, that taught me something about writing on both an emotional and a technical level, and most importantly, these are the books i had the most fun reading.
the green bone saga, fonda lee: i can't even explain the grip this series has on me. i expected to like it, certainly, but not this much and not with so much fervor ... it truly has Everything, and it's so, so well done. fonda lee has created such a fleshed out, actualized world, vibrant and bursting at the seams with lush, loving detail and a cast of characters to match. from start to finish i was invested in these characters and their story. it's about an intergenerational blood feud between rival clans, chock full of magic, martial arts, and politics both domestic and international, but at heart, it's an epic drama about family, honor, duty, and loyalty, and it made me feel every possible spectrum of emotion; by the end i felt pleasantly wrung out like an old, loved washcloth. it wasn't just the grand, sweeping scale of the story, but also the tender character interactions that made this series so, so special, so raw and real. it was very hard for me to move on to other books after i'd finished this series; i’d just been on a journey spanning thirty years, and had just left characters that felt so real and familiar to me. it's extremely challenging to pull off a feat of this size and scale, but fonda lee astounded me with her skill. she's a truly capable writer.
no exit, taylor adams: believe it or not, this was my second ever thriller, and no one is more surprised than me at the chokehold it had me in ... the twists and turns and reveals in this book had me gasping vibrating on the edge of my seat, heart racing, sitting up straight. i actually couldn't lie down and read this. i picked this up because i take a special pleasure in stories that take place in the blistering, isolating confines of winter storms, and this one takes place entirely in a rest stop on the mountains. darby is a college student who is driving home for the holidays, but the storm forces her to take shelter in a remote rest stop, where the other four characters in the cast are also taking refuge. outside, darby makes a discovery as she struggles for cell phone signal: in the back of the van parked next to her car lies a little girl trapped in an animal cage. someone at the rest stop is a suspect, and darby makes up her mind to save the girl no matter what. it's this decision that kickstarts a chain of events that i, quite frankly, was not expecting in the slightest or equipped to handle, for the sheer explosiveness with which they fire one after another. who can she trust, and who is going to make it out alive until the snow plows come in the morning? the whole thing takes place in the span of 8 hours, and i haven't read a crazier 8 hours anywhere else in my life. this particularly horrifying predicament the characters find themselves in along with the forced confinement to a single setting made for such a whirlwind and compelling read; there was nowhere else for the tension to go but inward, building and building. like the characters, i too felt the walls closing in around me the longer i kept reading, the dread and paranoia seeping into my blood and gnawing away at my nerves. this was absolutely a wild ride from start to finish. the only other time i felt this buzzed reading a book was stephen king's misery. the author is a master in stretching the tension out till it's unbearable and making it snap in the most explosive way.
the last unicorn, peter beagle: proves that sometimes the best stories are the simplest. i was so utterly charmed by this sweet, luscious fairy tale of a story. the writing is absolutely sublime, and the cast of characters is so rich and fun to follow. to try to explain the story is to cheapen it, in my opinion, so do yourself a favor and just read it; you've got to read it to experience its magic. you will be swept away in the gorgeous, lush prose that feels like the stuff of dreams. i wish i could write half as beautifully.
how to sell a haunted house, grady hendrix: this is an honorable mention... it's not quite on the same level as the others, but it's close. i wasn't expecting to enjoy this one so much, but the longer i think about it, the more i recall just how much fun this was to read, even if it's actually closer to a 4.5 than a 5. louise and mark are estranged siblings whose parents' death forces them back together; there's the matter of selling their parents' house, but there's just one problem: it's haunted. by what, you may ask? by their mother's art collection: an entire legion of handmade puppets that was her life's work and which both mark and louise have quite complicated and fucked up relationships with. i really enjoyed how the siblings have to make amends with each other because that's the only way they can tackle head-on the unresolved trauma they both have from growing up in that house, personified in the army of puppets who is quite literally out to kill them, spearheaded by the leader, pupkin, who was their mother's first puppet. this was equal parts terrifying, heartfelt, and hilarious. i do love a good sibling dynamic, and dolls in particular have always scared me ever since i was little, and that really factored into my enjoyment for this book.
i’m tagging @schech and @mimires and whoever else wants to share their five star reads❕📚

Over the past couple of weeks, I’d read the next two books in my Twisted Tale collection: Unbirthday and Straight On Till Morning. I was a little disappointed that I didn’t enjoy reading Unbirthday as much as I enjoyed reading the first two, as it, at times felt like I was reading from a dictionary with the amount of almost unpronounceable words used, but on the bright side, the story did get better near the end.
Before I knew it, I got started on Straight On Till Morning and I would have to say even though it wasn’t quite what I expected, that I enjoyed reading that one a little more.
Either way, I’m loving the Twisted Tales books so far that I can’t wait to start reading the next two, Once Upon A Dream and Part Of Your World. Stay tuned for that post which might take a few weeks to appear…gotta work that reading magic, ya know. As the fairy godmother once said, “even miracles take a little time” 😉📚.

Part of Your World - Liz Braswell
It has been five years since Ariel lost the battle with the sea witch and King Triton was killed. Now, Ursula rules the coastal kingdom of Tirulia as Princess Vanessa, and Ariel has taken her father's place as the mute Queen of the Sea.
But when Scuttle brings word that Triton might still be alive, Ariel mounts a rescue mission to free her father from Ursula's clutches, break the hypnosis spell on Prince Eric, get her voice back, and stop Ursula once and for all before she declares war on every kingdom on land and in the sea.
I really enjoyed seeing this slightly more mature version of Ariel who acknowledges and learns from her mistakes of the past. And I think the ending is arguably a better 'happy ever after' than the one in the Disney movie!
