I'm all for an animated Stormlight adaptation, but if we had to have a live action adaptation I would jump for joy of it was done with all practical effects.
Built sets. Muppet spren. They don't even have to be muppets, they could be something brand new. There's another Jim Henson out there who could change the way we use puppets in media if they just got a platform.
Imagine fabric anticipationspren. Anxietyspren that were wrought iron x's embedded in plastic spheres that were weighted to wobble in place. Idk I think it would be amazing artistically.
Plus maybe a renaissance in working with unionized staff? A reappreciation for practical effects? Artists and craftspeople getting some fucking respect?

To me the ideal stormlight archive adaptation would be the humans and their povs being classic fantasy series adaptation with actors (oh god please have good casting PLEASE) and cgi and stuff, the spren and shaesmar being animated cartoonishly, and the singers and their povs being like a movie musical
I love all of this. The casting for it would most definitely be the hardest thing to get right imo

So I just had a thought. Roshar has slightly less gravity and slightly higher oxygen than earth. We know that oxygen toxicity is a thing. What would constant exposure to slightly too much oxygen do to people? Could it make them perhaps a little bit....airsick? 😏
#yes pedants#i know that the slightly lower pressure would probably balance everything else out#i know that their bodies would adapt to such a minor increase with no problems#its a joke#not actual speculation#my thoughts#funny#stormlight archives#rock

The best thing about being young is a higher probability of seeing an epic high budget Stormlight TV series. In this essay I will -

I feel like one of the only people who just straight up doesn’t want any film or tv adaptation of Stormlight made. Period. Not a movie, not a series. The only exception would be an animated series in the vein of Arcane, Trigun Stampede, Vox Machina, etc and even then I still am not super enthusiastic about that.
I just do not want it. I don’t trust any Hollywood person to get it right. And I’d just rather have the books without the disappointment. There is so much in Stormlight that would be nearly impossible to convey without all the internal thoughts being right up front. They’d make it into a flat story that only focuses on one aspect and I just don’t want it.

imagine getting cast as gavilar in a stormlight adaptation (animated, or live action i'll be happy with both).
He has two minutes of screentime. he turns out to be a douchebag by season four. he is dead by the first episode. yeah you'll be a perfect fit for him.
#cosmere#the stormlight archive#if it is a live action#i want to see the casting for young dalinar in oathbringer#and also i'd like for ALL of the actors to be unknown#like i don't want fucking timothee chalamet saying#“i will protect those who cannot protect themselves”#same goes for voice acting in an animated adaptation

The concept of spren is a very convenient cheat code when you feel lazy to do the show not tell thing for emotions of the characters. Don’t want to describe what the characters are feeling? Don’t worry, whatever the emotion-spren to the rescue.
#would be very hard to adapt to live action though#sprens#the stormlight archive#brandon sanderson#sylphrena#the way of kings#oathbringer#words of radiance

I've been having a lot of discussions and thoughts about Ruin's future sight, Preservation's plans, and Harmony's knowledge.
Because of this, I have a good basis on how to write Ruin in my Mistborn AU. Sanderson has hinted that Ruin is the power of change and entropy, so I really want to lean in that direction. Rather than portraying him as the entity of death and destruction that Sanderson wrote him as, I want to write him as the God of Decay and Entropy. Everything we associate with canon Ruin would be parts of his desire/methods of ensuring that all things degrade and decay. Death and destruction are parts of his Intent, but they aren’t forefront in the Intent. The forefront of Ruin’s Intent consists of degradation, entropy, and chaos. To enhance this idea, I may write that AU Ruin pushes people to embrace uncertainty and change.
For example, we know that Ruin canonically pulled the strings behind Kelsier’s rebellion and the discovery of the Eleventh Metal. I would enhance this idea, so that Ruin is responsible for the rise and fall of pre-Rashek empires and kingdoms, war, the advancement of technology, and rebellions. In the Final Empire’s context he would be responsible for guiding its various rebellions, and for advancing technology in the less controlled Dominances.
Ruin weaves and executes multiple, branching schemes to ensure the subtle, slow downfall of Scadrial and its empires. He knows there are countless ways his Intent is present in the Universe, and will execute them through any avenue. I would significantly expand on his actions throughout history.
I desperately intend to expand upon Ruin’s precognitive abilities. It doesn’t feel right downplaying Ruin’s future sight when the only WoB we have about it came from 2012, way before Sanderson truly incorporated precognition into the Cosmere. Not only that but the Mistborn trilogy was written before he solidified Cosmere-wide mechanics. I think that once a Mistborn adaptation comes out, we will truly see his abilities in action.
AU Ruin’s future sight would still be inferior to Preservation. It feels slightly wrong LMAO, but it’s necessary for the ending. But it’s far better than Elend’s future vision and Odium’s future sight.
I haven’t read Stormlight yet, but I heard that Odium definitively has future sight. Going by the IRL definition of the word “odium,” I believe canon Ruin’s Intent of causing death and destruction requires a lot more foresight/planning than inducing hatred.
AU Ruin would also be so much more destructive when released. I want to give Ruin more influence over the world by creating more natural disasters - earthquakes with more impact, floods, earthquakes, blizzards, thunderstorms, tornadoes and hurricanes, scenes of Luthadel’s death etc…
Right now I plan to say that weakened Ruin w/ Preservation’s presence can manipulate phenomena that already exists in Scadrial's natural science. He can manipulate and create anything on the planet to his liking, but he can't _completely_ destroy its structure. He can't do feats like reduce the continents to nothingness, boil the oceans in their entirety, or burn the planet down until nothing remains.
But he can do everything the Lord Ruler accomplished during his Ascension. Weakened Ruin can move the continents or split them apart, move the planet, boil the oceans so they’re absurdly hot, and make the planet hotter or colder.
#mistborn#cosmere#mistborn critical#cosmere critical#mistborn rewrite#mistborn ruin#brief mention of stormlight#brief mention of odium#ruin is the god of decay and entropy#can’t see how odium could possibly see into the future better than odium#better see some of ruin’s future sight in the mistborn adaptation

Talking to my friends about Brandon Sanderson's books, a sentiment I had and they echoed is how much it reads like action anime - I've read other action scenes, but something about the action in mistborn feels so like, readable, it's weird. By that time I had only read Mistborn and Warbreaker, and so imagine my surprise when I started reading Way of Kings and the world has literal manga SFX as visible lights and colors as a physical thing the characters interact Anyway the first thing that came to mind
The menacingspren
#stormlight archive anime adaption must have googly eyes on all its visual sfx#the way of kings#yettofindaname reads the cosmere

Cosmere (but really just Stormlight & Mistborn ‘cause those are the only one with a chance of adaptation) adaptation opinions:
Mistborn era 1 would work best as a trilogy of live-action movies. So would Mistborn era 2, with books 1 and 2 being condensed into 1 movie.
The Stormlight Archive would be almost impossible to make well if it was not an animated series, and could be amazing in animation, most likely in a style similar to Netflix’s Castlevania. The reason it would be almost impossible outside of 2-D animation is because of the very visually unique world, which would be far cheaper to make and better looking in 2-D than if it was all cgi in a live action show. Also the reason it would be a show is because of the sheer number of important pov characters, which could very easily disrupt the flow of a movie, but would be far more workable in a show.
The only mainline Cosmere property that would make even a sorta good video game (of any kind) is Mistborn era 2. Era 1 and Stormlight have far too much of a focus on a big bad evil force you must work to destroy, while era 2 has a world with a lot of smaller threats to deal with and cool stuff to do in a game. Also the resources for magic are far to scarce and complicated to get and maintain in era 1 and Stormlight to make a fun video game (except maybe a top-down rpg like Divinity Original Sin 2), while magic has a well established place in the world in era 2 and could just be another resource you have to loot off enemies or buy, like healing items or bullets. I had to guess what the genre would be if it was made I’d say an open-world rpg, somewhat like The Witcher 3, Horizon Zero Dawn, Fallout: New Vegas, or maybe Red Rising. Probably with a main villain and/or relatively local social/political conflict to solve, a lot of side quests including bounties, treasure hunts, and more personal quest for npcs. The world map would probably be one big area for the Roughs with a few towns scattered though it, and another big area that’s just Elendel city, or some other city in the Elendel basin if it wants to differentiate itself from the books.
