Ok, a Monday Update on Bill H.R. 9495
the House voted in committee today with several of the Democrates loudly opposing it (good thing). A full House vote is expected later this week, either Wednesday or Thursday (probably Thursday)
So it's important to keep up the pressure and keep on making your voices heard
Same thing as before :
Find your representative here:
If your Rep is one of the Dems that voted "Yes" on this, tell them this is their chance to stop this bill and not give Trump more powers. Tell them you'll vote for them in the next election if they vote "no" on this bill.
If your Rep is Republican, tell them that this bill would also affect the Salvation Army as it is nonprofit.
If your Rep previously voted "No" on this bill, encourage them to keep their stand and stick to their "No",and thank them for this.
CALL TOOLS :
Here's the ACLU call tool:
FFTF 's updated call tool:
Don't forget to fax as well:
Call in number is 319-313-7674
Script you can also use :
"I am calling to urge my representative to vote no on H.R. 9495 . This is a dangerous bill would give the Trump administration unilateral power to label any non-profit as terrorist supporting and shut it down without due process. I am calling on my representative to defend civil rights organizations and oppose this bill. Thank you.”

A helpful reminder when calling people about voting against H.R. 9495/H.R 6408 and voting against KOSA. (By the way, Americans under 18 can still call too.)

Here's the actual text of the bill for that clause for anyone wondering. So if you want to know what qualifies as a terrorist supporting organization in their book, I suggest looking at section 2339B of title 18, cause that's what they're going to go by.
And there is a recission part in the last 3 images.
Readers, make sure you have all your favourite Ao3 fics downloaded.
Writers, make sure you have copies of all the fics you have posted on Ao3.
I don’t want to be alarming, but things could get really bad really fast. OTW shared this today on Twitter, and I'm a bit worried about it 😅
Ao3 is a non-profit organisation. If they have to start paying taxes, I have no idea what will happen.
#US congress#HR 9495#politics#was reading through the website#and a related bill#hr 6408 already gives this power to the secretary of state and it was passed in april#this one just seems to be tacking on the first clause#i think its unlikely theyll be coming after many of the places yall are saying without sufficient evidence#like it sounds like the nonprofits will have a chance to appeal or at least wont be shut down#not saying to stop doing everything you can for what you believe in but read the actual bill please

hey🤫psst yeah you! wanna stop Congress from criminalizing and shutting down pro-Palestine, pro-Black and pro-LGBTQ organizations and student groups? i got you. Congress is re-introducing a bill Monday 11/18 and voting Wednesday👀
the tl;dr is that HR 9495 would give the government the ability to brand nonprofits, including student orgs and other groups as criminal “terror” orgs. Congress voted it down once narrowly but are trying to ram it through again. more on that⤵️
why nonprofits? because whether it's Palestine or Stop Cop City or helping houseless people, national nonprofits have the resources to launch lawsuits for human rights violations. and because your student groups have shaken shit up.
what can we do? we’re gonna go and sign the petitions (literally just like two minutes)
next we’re gonna post about it on our socials and light up those Congressional phone lines like it’s a hallmark holiday movie.
the clock for this bill runs out Wednesday. so make your calls and send your emails.

With the incoming Trump administration broadly vowing to take vengeance against “enemies within,” the successful passage of this bill would place a wide array of organizations vital to Democratic organizing and policymaking in the president-elect’s direct line of fire. It is supremely puzzling, then, that this bill received bipartisan support.
. . .
The New RepublicBreaking Newsfrom Washington and beyondMost Recent PostHafiz RashidNovember 21, 2024/1:20 p.m. ETShare This StoryThe 15 Democrats Who Voted to Give Trump Insane New PowersOn Thursday, the House passed a bill that would allow the president to wipe out any nonprofit organizations he opposes with the flick of a pen. He had bipartisan support.Texas Rep. Henry Cuellar was one of the 15 Democrats to vote on HR 9495 on Thursday.*Tom Williams/Getty ImagesTexas Representative Henry Cuellar was one of the 15 Democrats to vote on H.R. 9495 on Thursday.*The Stop Terror-Financing and Tax Penalties on American Hostages Act would allow the secretary of the treasury, a Cabinet position appointed by the president, to revoke a nonprofit organization’s tax-exempt status by labeling it as “terrorist-supporting.” It passed by a vote of 219–184, mostly along party lines. With the incoming Trump administration broadly vowing to take vengeance against “enemies within,” the successful passage of this bill would place a wide array of organizations vital to Democratic organizing and policymaking in the president-elect’s direct line of fire. It is supremely puzzling, then, that this bill received bipartisan support.Last week, the same bill failed to advance out of the House because it failed to garner the two-thirds majority needed to pass during a suspension of the lower chamber’s rules. It was subsequently sent back to committee and retooled for a simple majority vote. While 52 Democrats voted for the bill previously, enormous pressure was applied to get those who backed the bill last week to come out against it on Thursday. This time, 15 of them voted along with every single Republican for the bill, which would have a chilling effect on free speech. The bill’s original intention was to aid in the clamping down on pro-Palestinian protesters, particularly those on college campuses—a dubious undertaking given both the First Amendment rights enjoyed by all under the Constitution as well as a slew of other statutes that already make it illegal to provide material support to terrorist organizations.
However, the reelection of Trump casts this measure in a new light. His promise to turn the civil service into an engine of personal vengeance should be sufficient evidence that he’d likely abuse the powers granted under H.R. 9495, potentially allowing the president to target fairly well-known liberal organizations, such as the Center for American Progress, with punishing sanctions that would prevent such outfits from raising or banking money—penalties which, under the proposed law, such sanctioned organizations would be barred from pursuing legal recourse to plead their case. Moreover, in addition to activist groups, many universities and news outlets are nonprofit organizations.
While significantly lower than the 52 members who joined in last week’s vote to advance the bill, 15 Democrats is still a surprising number of representatives who seem to care more about wanting to neutralize irksome protesters than a fascist, authoritarian president targeting any nonprofit he doesn’t like. Here’s a full list of Democrats who voted for the bill:
Colin Allred—Texas
Yadira D. Caraveo—Colorado
Ed Case—Hawaii
Henry Cuellar—Texas
Don Davis—North Carolina
Jared Golden—Maine
Vicente Gonzalez—Texas
Suzanne Marie Lee—Nevada
Jared Moskowitz—Florida
Jimmy Panetta—California
Marie Gluesenkamp Perez—Washington
Brad Schneider—Illinois
Tom Suozzi—New York
Norma Torres—California
Debbie Wasserman Schultz—Florida
